Arthas legacy will and can ever be forgotten. A time when the writers at blizzard still cared about the lore instead of breaking the lore every time it suits them to tell a meaningless and empty story. Arthas Menethil will be remembered as the best written villain a blizzard game ever had.
Honestly, given the significance of that scene it was a shame to see the cinematic wasn't done like their high quality cgi cinematics. it would've made a powerful scene even more powerful
Sylvanas has the last words with Arthas, who is not important to him, when the love of his life and his mentor who was like a second father to him are present. What a pathetic way to give an "end" to the most iconic character in the entire saga. How disrespectful.
Not important to him? Did you forget who turned her to banshee and caused what we've seen in all expansions since then from her? :D Maybe you are the one who forgot the saga!
@@f4lse_lol she was nothing to him but an enemy and then a rebellious minion, the fact that he set the following actions in motion doesn’t mean he has anywhere near the emotional connection to her as Jaina or Uther. You can add as many “:D’s” as you like but your take is still stupid.
@@f4lse_lol He may be important to her, but to him, she is nothing more than a little mistake. Jaina and Uther are thousand times more important to Arthas than Sylvanas. And believe me friend, I did not forget about the saga, although I wish I could forget the last part, especially since Sylvanas became the "protagonist" of this shit.
probably 2 part because how they fucked up in everything... + Sylvanas the queen-bitch speaking when Arthas was not even close at all to her... a litteraly regular victim is the one to speek rather than Jaina or Uther?... silence that bitch i say...
I actually liked it cause...it seems so fitting for the dark bargain Arthas made all those years ago when he picked up Frostmourne. Warned it would be his ruin, and the hubris of being reduced to nothing but a flicker and a tool is exactly the poetry that story needed for its end.

I love the parallel of Varian's "My son..." To Tiranis Menethil's "My son..." before talking to their son, who has been corrupted and taken control of by the Jailer.
Not only that, but it's also a callback to the last time Varian was still alive, talking "directly" to his son. 7.0 Intro cinematic started with Varian writing his letter to Anduin, starting it with the line: My son... the last thing he said towards him. Also, besides that, let us not ignore the fact that they merged Varian's theme and Saurfang's theme and it sounds fucking badass.
Although we all believed Arthas to be dead at the end of Icecrown Citadel, it never bothered me that much that his story had been brought to an end. Then to have him teased for however long it's been as returning, to just having Arthas' story end like this is actually really upsetting.
That's because it was a good, satisfying ending that naturally concluded his story. This is (to use an over-referenced franchise) the Star Wars sequels where you learn: Han peaked 30 years ago and is back to being a total loser, Leia is still fighting the Empire, and Luke has become a hobo who just wants to die alone. As opposed to leaders of the Rebellion (which had just killed Palpatine and Vader) and the first of the new Jedi.

this feels very much like a salty attempt at the current writing staff to try and destroy and bury the past writing and story telling of those who came before and outshined them in the past, a little "Fine! October 2020: "The story of Arthas from Warcraft III to its conclusion at the end of Wrath of the Lich King is one of the most iconic tales of our canon. We do not invoke his name lightly. At the same time, Shadowlands allows us to explore the origins of the darkness that consumed the heart of the young prince. In the process, we just might learn more about him and the others whose lives were forever impacted by the choices Arthas made." March 2022: "Flicker ball go spoof, lul" (This is not my comment btw, i just wanted to share it since it's so fking funny)
Eh, we already got Arthas in Uther's story. And they were all flashbacks: Arthas's story was over years ago. I don't know what anyone else expected. Not what they wanted or wished for, what they actually realistically expected.
Fun fact, the younger Saurfang's last words where "Enough talk! Let it be finished!" (watch the wrathgate cinematic) He then tries to cut down Arthas just to be killed, hints why he is a raid boss in ICC. In this cutscene Saurfang helps Anduin and says "Let it be finished" right before he rips the sword apart. I thought that was fitting, the Saurfang name finally followed through with the task of defeating the Lich king once and for all. I still believe Arthas deserved so much more. His reasons were so different from Sylvanas, he tried to save his people and his kingdom by traveling against orders to a strange land to kill a demon, his actions in Stratholme where questionable but he was basically in a panic to save his people and kingdom and wanted to do that by any means necessary. In Northrend he took up the sword and the helm to ultimately save his people and his kingdom, it didn't start until after he took the helm and sword when he was influenced and controlled, then he started forgetting everything else besides building his undead army and domination. Sylvanas on the other hand, yes she lost everything to the Lich king but even after being freed, at many points her intentions where pure evil, for example the bombing of the Wrathgate, Teldrassil, she bombed a lot more than just the wrathgate too, and her methods changed from just turning people after they died naturally to forcing them into it after purposefully killing them, there is more im not even gonna mention you get the idea. It bothers me she got the last word to him and not Jaina and Uther. Jaina and Uther where the ones closest to ARTHAS not just the Lich king, they had to walk the road with him and carry the burden and ultimately watch his downfall. Jaina went through how many expansions trying to come to terms with the whole Arthas situation?! They did not even want to give Uther some peace after being angry at Arthas for being his mentee and then killing him? So many teasers in WOTLK about how there was some little speck of Arthas left that stopped the scourge from killing everything in Azeroth (Halls of Reflection), so many teasers that he remembered Jaina and spared her and kept her necklace and for her to blame herself for his downfall in BfA only for Sylvanas to get the last word and for him to just disappear????? Does no one remeber the Mathias Lehner questline in Icecrown???? There are SO MANY unanswered questions about Arthas and his storyline and for this to be the ending to him after Blizzard purposefully said they wouldn't tarnish his name by bringing back all this stuff in Shadowlands is honestly just shameful. Okay rant over
To answer it simply, Blizzard cannot remember their own lore, nor most of the stuff in Wrath that isn’t the Icecrown Raid itself. Danuser will keep shoving Sylvanus into the spotlight until there isn’t even a modicum of respect left for her, and at the end of the day dust off his hands thinking he wrote a masterwork. I can almost guarantee that the entire half with Anduin was hastily made to make or cover up Sylv’s already cringe monologue a little less cringe.
Everyone forgetting arthas soul remnants are in the blades of the fallen Prince and what was left from his heart which was destroyed. He essentially became a horcrux being destroyed one piece at a time.
Hey, you're right...🤔 Edit: the least Sylvanas could do for Arthas is forgive him because she was at the same level as he. As for Jaina and Uther, they too should have talked to Arthas, at least.
Arthas comes back in form one last time -> but isn't he still in the Maw, from which souls cannot escape from? Arthas gets redeemed -> but didn't he still kill all those people in Stratholme, and betrayed the mercenaries in Northrend, all before he became the Lich King? Arthas gets a reunion with Jaina for one last time -> didn't Jaina spend all five expansions-worth of character development to be more than a stereotypical female love interest in the end? Arthas remains atoning for his sins for all eternity -> but isn't the only reason he's in the Maw is because of Uther? shouldn't he land at least Revendreth? But then he can't leave the Maw right? See my point? Once you removed your nostalgia-goggles, the idea of his soul finding peace in oblivion makes a lot more sense.
@@nutterbipple Except for the fact that oblivion basically equates to nonexistence. So, there is no peace, nothing at all. Just…written off. That’s what sucks. As for Strat, did they have a cure for that? Or were they all likely to become more horrors creating/spreading more horrors?
@@nutterbipple it does make sense for him to rest, but the execution was garbage nonetheless. I always felt it was a bad choice 1.: to let Sylvanas say the last words to Arthas and 2.: that they picked those words for him... Arthas will NEVER be forgotten. One of the most tragic figures in gaming history.
Im sorry but Arthas not a tragic figure. He made his choices willingly with no regard for the warnings or the obvious red flags. Whatever happened to him was totally deserved and far from tragic. Yes he was powerful enough to still maintain a small portion of control so that the Lich King wouldnt annihilate everything but the lives he ruined out of his thirst for vengeance were countless. Sylvanas story is tragic on the other hand. All she ever wanted was to defend her kingdom from the undead, she was killed and raised into undeath and slowly evolved into an Arthas 2.0, only she never willingly chose her destiny. It was forced upon her.
@@graddeos For me, Illidan has the most tragic story with a happy ending. Unrequited love, brother, ultimately the desire to succeed no matter what. The result is the character growing up and renouncing, following his call and aspirations, overcoming all adversity.
@@M1Deavon Illidan story is amazing. I wouldnt call it tragic per se, cus he made his choices willingly too. However his arc development feels realistic and down to earth, even for a fantazy world. How unrequited love and being in someone's shadow can impact your life choices.
@@graddeos I disagree. I think his story is still tragic. The thing that made him so focussed on vengeance was out of a genuine desire to protect his people and kingdom no matter the cost. To him, however flawed it was, there was no other way.

@@jasterloanstar2886 I'd hoped for that ending too where Arthas helps Saurfang and Varian save Anduin at the very least and then says his final words to Jaina, Uther and Sylvanas before going to Revendrath.
Wanna see Saurfang, Varian, and Arthas have a storyline in the Shadowlands? Too bad! They only show up in a cinematic at the end of the expansion! Wanna see Jaina and Uther say goodbye to Arthas? Too bad! It's all Sylvanas!
This cinematic should've been at least 1 minute longer. They should've also used the Arthas model that they used in the BFA cinematic when Katherine was searching for Jaina in Thros. I mean, why did the made that high-res model if they were only going to use it for like 10 seconds? He should've had his final farewell with both Jaina and Uther instead of Sylvanas flaming his soul and basically telling him to get the fk out. Arthas' story is definitely one of the saddest lorewise and his fate in SL just made it even sadder.
See, is it though? I really can't pretend that Arthas was entirely a victim of the helm. I mean, remember, he was doing all of the wrong things before he even touched Frostmourne. He was seduced by the power of the blade in order to kill a dreadlord and save his people. He gave in willingly. The sword and helm, I believe, just amplified the worst qualities of Arthas. But, Jaina already had her closure. She didn't need to speak anymore on or to him. Uther was more shocked, since the torment that killed him also imprisoned someone else, and his guilt is more prevalent there. Syvlanas was the only one with a clear-ish head
For me i would rather have Arthas a chance of redemption, even if it would never be 'seen' in players time of 'wow' storyline I mean they gave it to 2 bastard elven leaders, 1 of former undead the other before becoming a demon lover... But not to a guy who sold his soul really and only ever wanted to save what he could of his people and kill off the 'main' murderer? Sell his own hide and sure sure he'd go for that i understand it... The other ones was like 1 sell them to demons for power sure I take it! and the other was like be a bitch queen and then 'sell' them to jailer asshole yeah why not?... Arthas was better in life and probably even death than either of them and he gets to die off? fck off fake wow shit or whatever it is now.

But he was angered at Mal'ganis and Kel'thuzad to the point where his actions made Uther question Arthas' own power as a Paladin. That was in WC3, so even without Christie Golden's book, that's still truth. Frostmourne seduced him, yes, because at that point, he lusted for whatever power he could use to save his people. Great intentions, but bad idea, therefore, not entirely a victim
So let me get this right, Arthas was always under the influence of the Jailer just like Sylvanus. (He was basically tricked in to finding Frostmourne) Yet Sylvanus comes out with a redemption arc and Arthas must have the memory of his existence erased and soul unmade? What atrocities did Arthas commit that were so much worse than Sylvanus burning down Teldrassil? Stratholme? Where the entire population had already been infected and were to be turned to zombies by Mal Ganis? Someone help me out here. "Father is it over?" "At long last." Was this just story filler fluff? Because apparently, "No, it's not over, you must have your very memory and soul erased." This along with all of the Shadowlands expansion was a disappointment.
@@clubpenguinfan1235 Under the influence of the Sword and therefore the jailer, just like Sylvanus was when she burned down Teldrassil. "Her war crimes, repugnant even to other Horde members and to an embattled world, were already apparent before the advent of the Lich King. Sylvanas maintained extensive slave pens in Undercity where captives from all of Lordaeron were brought to be tortured, vivisected and experimented on, an action Thrall's knowledge would likely result in the Forsaken's expulsion from the Horde, if not outright destruction. Her methods of using human, dwarf and even orcish captives as experimental subjects for her plagues, as well as usage of plague on several cities are an often overlooked/ignored aspect of her due to her popularity by fans regarding her villainousness. More recently, Sylvanas launched a genocidal attack on the Night Elf homes of Teldrassil and Darnassus, completely destroying both and killing any who did not escape in time. This atrocity against her own race of origin provoked a new wave of Alliance-Horde hatred and violence, sending Azeroth into bloody warfare once again." I'm just trying to say that neither was better or worse than the other. The story writing was lazy and their fetish for Sylvanus destroyed what could have been an amazing redemption arc for the most legendary character in WoW history, Arthas Menethil. They specifically want Arthas to be wiped from history so Sylvanus can take his place. They failed and instead they are just going to hemorrhage more and more of their dwindling fan base.
This indeed is the worst ending we could ever witness for him. So much for bringing in the hype by teasing him in bastion promo video, simply to draw his fanbase in game...
I mean Sylvanas was WARchief and at war against alliance for a while now, ("bUt TeLdRaSsiL hAd onLy ciViLiAns", who the fuck belived that?XD it was as guarded as any other city, it had it own fleet and army etc.) Btw, killing civilians is a war crime because of Geneva Convention, can't recall any treaties in Warcraft that say what is right or wrong at war. On the other hand Arthas was a paladin and a protector of his people, but he decided if a part of population is corrupted he must slaughter all of his subjects. Tell me you don't see the difference now
@@plummet3860 well if you build up his return as hype prior to the games release only to have said character's appearance in the game to not have any real impact or importance you've retroactively destroyed the character's story arc.

Though this ending stinks, Sylvanas's poetic words don't surprise me as she IS a Elf and they're known to be poetic no matter what type of Elf they are.
This cinematic could’ve been absolutely amazing, but they dropped the ball right at the last second. The music was brilliant - Anduin’s theme into Saurfang’s theme, into Arthas, My Son into Lament of the Highbourne. Varian and Saurfang’s brief return. All great. And then Arthas’ legacy just desecrated. This is Last Jedi/Luke Skywalker level of treatment to one of, if not the most iconic Warcraft characters. How anyone thought this was a good idea is beyond me.
The Arthas storyline is the most basic and overused storyline in the world. There's nothing special about that character. If anything his entire character development is shallow. Have you even played WC3? Read the book? Stop portraying him as something special.
@@Geeserunner I mean, his story was concluded at the end of WC3 Frozen Throne and then Wrath of the Lich King. Then they bring his character back from the grave and use him as some kind of plot device? It's disgraceful.
You know what, this would actually be pretty decent if the lead-up to it was done well and the story wasn't so strangely underwhelming otherwise. What a shame.
Yes, no point at all. Jaina does not trust Sylvanas for making Anduin into death knight, but trusting Uther that he throw her lover into the MAW, wait does she knows that?
The crime wasn't that Sylvanas got the monologue, but that they didn't prepare for it in the right way. She represents the entire people abused and ruined by his choice... but they didn't lay the groundwork to explain that nearly enough. Jaina found her closure in BFA, Uther found his closure last patch... but because of the catastrophe of Sylvanas's arc, we don't feel like she needed that closure, when the OG Sylv would have.

Same thought brooo...fck Blizzard litteraly deleted arthas like wtf arthas is a big character in wow like he is the reason I play wow... And follow the lore
Having Arthas come back would open up a can of worms that will make the story even more convoluted. Though I too was excited to see him, in retrospect, having him disappear in oblivion would suit his situation best. Those who think he's innocent due to lack of free will would argue that he needs to be redeemed, but pre-frostmourne Arthas did kill all those people in Stratholme. Those who think he's guilty would say he needs to atone for his sins, but that wouldn't make any sense since he's already in the Maw which is sort of the worst circumstance he could ever be in.

This does make me sad. Not the ending itself, but how we got NOTHING from Arthas until the end in which we only get to see a flicker of his soul. It's just so damn disappointing, especially for me who started playing during Wrath. Arthas has always been the golden standard for a character in WoW.
I can get people being mad expecting Arthas in the "flesh" but the thing is *Arthas had his ending. This cutscene is not about him.* It's about the impact that was left behind, and the people that were shaped in that wake, _for better or for worse._ I think to a wake held after a funeral. You might speak at it about a person, but they're not really there. Not really. Not anymore.
Absolutely shocked. I haven’t played since mists of pandaria since I found that boring. But along the way I’ve kept up with the lore. And I was really keen to be able to start playing again but on my Xbox… until I seen this cinematic. I can’t see any reason as to why I would want to come back now. This is a huge spit on the face to all wow players. So angry with blizzard cannot believe what they have done.
man anduin being the new lich king and taking he's seat at ice crown citadel would have been some epic shit, it fits him well. "there must alway's be a lich king" means nothing now.... they destroyed the soul reason i started playing wow for.
Thank you Blizzard for continuing the general vibe of absolute disappointment in Shadowlands. Landscape: Boring. Villains: Idiotic AF Story: See above And now you give us the end to one of the most beloved, feared, powerful and interesting Characters in the history of gaming I might say, in the form of a blue gas cloud. All that was missing, was the fart noise when he faded.
Always though slyvannas would know about Arthur's soul been in the sword. She always hated him and would be a good way the jailer to please her and get her to his bidding more
Three things: 1. Anduin was saved by the Power of Love. And Plot Contrivance. 2. Sylvannas almost sounded compassionate when she was talking about Arthas. 3. Wait, if that's the last of Arthas' soul, wtf happened to the part of him cast into the Maw?
Argh! Uther says his soul was used by the jailor’s soul forges, which means his soul was used to forge and power kingsmourne, but since the blade was separated, it released what little was left of arthas soul, only to it fade away and finally confirm he is 100% dead and never returning again. Yeah I hate shadowlands as whole now, arthas was the last bit of interest I had left, thinking we would at least see him get a proper sendoff, but this is what we get from the brilliant mind of Steve danuser, the biggest sylvanas simp.
If only Metzen had been brought back sooner and given oversight of the story like he is now. I 100% know he would not have allowed Arthas to be done like this. This REEKED of steve danuser. He wanted to basically use Shadowlands as a way to gut and toss out the legacy and characters of the past he didn't want to bring forward into his shit story going forward. He didn't either know or care to do it properly either. Instead of a satisfying send off even if it did basically close the door forever on Arthas he just decided to stand right over fans and take a big ole shit all over the lore and fan support to see arthas one last time. Thankfully his ass was basically depowered by the end of SL and by mid DF gone.
What i just don't get is why Arthas only has one whole soul in the Shadowlands, even though he was the first to fall victim to frostmourne. Shouldn't his souls also have been divided into 2 halfs, one being like the prince of Lorderan and the other like the Death Knight?
I do love how Blizzard STILL evades having to justify The culling of Stratholme, since the rest of Arthas' crimes are all now "domination magic" coercion. I agree, it seems impossible to put an end to that debate, so let's just elf whisp this mofo away from trial and judgment with an edgy epitaph. SMH. Though the whole scene is nicely written, and Varian's memory "Forged by Valor" is nothing less than EPIC, the CORE issues remain undelivered. Also, WHY IS JAINA NOT CRYING ICECUBES in this scene?
Arthas has been dead for years. Jaina's not the stereotypical trope of a female character that she is back in WC3, she had time to grow and mature. She knew Arthas more than anyone and condemns what he had done. Having her weep like a btch would erase every single character development she had since wotlk. Though I admit the crimes of pre-frostmourne Arthas is still a gray area, you can't really blame someone for doing something without his/her free will. Having Arthas come back and atone for his sins is so cliche & will make his eventual exit even more troublesome to deal with. He has been exploited in life, exploiting him further in death doesn't sound good. Oblivion could possibly be the only way for him; his soul dying without a chance of living another life in the Shadowlands.
I'm not a arthas fan boy but he didn't do anything wrong by killing people who was gonna die anyway and go on to kill much more. Hard choice but not evil
I mean Blizzard doesn't justify Stratholme at all despite that fact it easily could (plague they barely understand that can turn people quickly into the undead plus it happening in a city creates a gigantic mess) given all the times they view it as bad. Pretty sure most of Arthas' Crimes comes under "domination magic" given even in W3 he changes quite a bit after taking up Frostmourne.
I had chills seeing varian again & even saurfang 🥺, but seeing a "bread crumb" of arthas for a few seconds without a word then vanishing .... was THAT it??? 🤦♂️
I'm so disappointed that Jaina, Arthas' lover, didn't even get to say her "final" goodbyes to the last piece of Arthas' soul and Sylvanas hogs the spotlight for her stupid fucking redemption arc.
I don’t think this is the last time we see Arthas. There is something bugging me. It is said that Arthas soul was consumed or split by Frostmourne in Warcraft 3 just like Uthers and when the Jailer gets the soul crystal for Shalamayne, it has these runes for domination on them, the same as when he took Sylvanas split part and used it on her at the end of the Sanctum of Domination. I think that the part of Arthas soul that Uther threw into the Maw is still there and it was only the part in Frostmourne that they used. This part that got consumed by Frostmourne and held all his anger.
Oh, trust me, they're going to pull that chestnut out when the dev team to come realizes how much we nearly unanimously hate this ending for him. They're not bringing the split soul thing up for him despite... Y'know, both Sylvanas *and* Tirian getting that treatment this expansion, and if they don't then they can either make this the final existence of his character or bring his spirit back another time. Mind you, I don't think they should. They had that chance, hyped us all up for Arthas to return and finally hear from the Menethil Prince for the first time since WCIII, but... This was what they used him for. A wisp, a literal plot ball to give Sylvanas a narrative conclusion to her arc and a further damning of his name to give undeserved sympathy for her.
The name of Arthas Menethil will never be forgotten, unlike yours, the dead huntress, killer and destroyer. Arthas tried to save everyone by sacrificing himself, and you're just a pawn in the wrong place at the wrong time. Silvana, you're nothing.
its almost 20 years of my life .... how can we forget arthas since I was 13 until now .... unforgotten moments: illdan becomes metamorph arthas defeats illidan NOW WE ARE ONE illidan's back U SHALL BE KING mannoroth : whaa .. what is this ... guldan , what have you done archimonde death illidan returns again and now ... arthas is gone
Aside from Sylvannas having the last words, this ending was actually perfect for Arthas in Shadowlands. Arthas' life and his death on ICC was already tragic. Given what we know his fate was after death and the incredible torture he must have endured until his soul was reduced to just a dim ball of light made it even more tragic. He was broken down so bad that he couldn't even talk. He couldn't even say goodbye. He didn't even have what every other character in Shadowlands still had: a soul. That's how much he was tortured. What an incredible fall from such high heights. There isn't another character in WoW who suffered more than Arthas and this cinematic clearly shows that in such a sad way.
So glad to see this comment. I feel like everyone has completely missed the point of his entire story. Arthas' story was always a classic tragedy. He tried to do the right thing at first, but his own actions took him so far off that path that he willingly became one of the most evil characters in the world. His power made people build him up to be some mythical juggernaut, but he was always that same confused, pissed off kid. By the end of Wrath he was only 31. And when he died, his death showed him for what he is: just a decently strong paladin who happened to pick up a mega-powerful sword that drove him completely nuts with power and rage. Just look at the fight: he's crazy strong, shrugs off everything you throw at him, one shots the entire raid, and then goes down in 5 seconds once Frostmourne gets broken. Then this ending happens. After all that's happened to him and all that he did, in the end he's just dust. He wasn't mythical. He was just a soul to be torn apart in Torghast like everyone else, and he fades away like so many of the other spirits he tore apart personally. It's the ending he deserved. People need to stop worshipping him like he's some paragon that just got a bad deal. He made his own bed, and he gets to sleep in it. It's tragic and sad, but it's absolutely fitting.
You will see more of him on next expansion: The Voiding Crusade. Where he will lead the Army of Light and the wakened Dragon Furry Titan against the Voidlords and their mysterious masters.
WotLk was the best expansion, so much fun, so accessible, so many friends playing - oh well, been 4 years since I left, just came here out of curiosity to see what they did to Arthas....sad.
Even at the end of all things that happened, Arthas Menethil really did leave a legacy and memories that cannot be forgotten. Despite all the atrocities that he committed during and after the Third War and the War against the Lich King
Arthas lich king did many bad stuff, Arthas the prince did only what he truly thought was needed to 'kill' an extremly powerful demon and stop a plague... A certain elf went mad of magic depletion and hooked up on fel magic dragged his own people into the mess and dies in outland comes back in shadowland with a plot to be redeemed... Arthas instead gets an off you go to nothing... Sylvanas gets a mission to undo her sins but while it will take quite a while it won't be end of her or so. Maybe we won't see her again out of SL but she is at least status alive... Arthas doesn even get a chance to be redeemed... not even a choice in the matter...
I do wish we had a better big bad than the jailer, but I do like that we get to see the final fragment of Arthas fade from existence. Like we know from Warcraft 3 that Frostmourne consumes the soul of its wielder and that Arthas lost his sanity and sense of self wandering Northrend before returning to Lorderon, so to finally see the final bit of essence fade away is low key bittersweet. The real crime here is Sylvanas, mainly just her going from legion to BFA to this was so all over the place
Who else got emotional seeing varian and saurfang? Also idk how i feel about this end to arthas In a way its what i always wanted for the end to arthas People always forget that arthas committed horrible crimes even before he ever laid eyes upon frostmourne And thats not even counting stratholme I always said if we saw arthas in the shadowlands, wed see him being punished and simply leave him there to his fate Now he has oblivion...and i really dont know how to feel
Stratholme is a big mess of morally grey that Sylvanas could never understand tbf. And honestly its more they did nothing while they expanded stuff like Mournblades (Which Frostmourne is one) and Blizzards love for changing everything. Like they could've used Arthas as an example of what Mournblades do and why they should try and rescue Anduin from one.
It's just Uther being so pure, that it blinded him preventing him from the truth that the whole City is already gone, whereas Arthas did the right thing. Sad, that his part is over, WoW can't be the same forme furthermore. Too many new faces, a handful of the best and old
@@juraburlaca5807 stratholme was such a screwed up situation that there was no right answer Did arthas do the right thing? We will never know. But history has shown at least that what he did was, in the end, pointless.
@@ConnorNotyerbidness Actually it was clear. Look, the whole city is already plagued, it's only the matter of time for them to become undead or even worse to infect the people outside the city area. It is the only rational way, it is hard and partially cruel but nonetheless if you act like Uther you are dumb. Because his purity costs nothing without acting in time and acting right, without hesitation. Just an worthless, shiny flex. But eventually, ofc its up to you: Hard decision to destroy the city in order to save the rest of the lands or just to ignore the problem so that these people end up dying (same outcome) but with a lot of harm to the whole Kingdom 😌
The fact that anyone like this mean that they never understood the story at all. Arthas is Warcraft, the blatant disrespect the writing team is showing him is the perfect representation of their disdain for the true canon. Watching this I didn't know whether to scream or cry.
Not everyone actually understood what was going on in wrath. Arthas destroyed and lost parts of his soul by the time he cast his heart out, frostmourne consumed his it shattered, then blades of the fallen Prince contained pieces. Etc. A mourneblade consumes souls as a means to power it, essentially the raid is a way of saying "arthas obliterated" because his last parts are being destroyed. His soul was tortured and used one more time as a battery such like garrosh. There wasn't much left after.
Just because you feel a character was disrespected doesn't mean it's not in line with the story. Arthas' ending in Wrath was tragic. This ending isn't disrespectful. If anything it just made his ending in wrath even more tragic than it originally was. Not only did his actual death and legacy not change (which is kinda what players wanted when it was even hinted Arthas would be in this) but it also showed us that the price Arthas paid far outweighed his sins. His life was stolen from him by Frostmourne & Nerzhul given how he was manipulated and taken advantage of. Then even in death, his opportunity at atonement was robbed from him because of Uther and his torture was likely far worse than any of the other characters we've come across so far. There was literally almost nothing left of his soul. Arthas got the saddest ending this way. It's not disrespectful, it actually makes a lot of sense.
@@randumpz7929 The fact that you honestly wrote that and looked at this cinematic and thought to yourself, "Yes, this is how the SOUL of Arthas (Not the Lich King) Should be sent off" You actually never enjoyed the story, you never understood it, you consume the worst media and it shows, Arthas was given no Judgement in the Shadowlands, he wasn't given Maldraxxus, Revendreth, Bastion, he was swooped up in his dying moments and immediately casted into the Maw. Where you keep saying he was tortured, but we can never fully know for sure, since Garrosh was a weaker character and yet he was disenchanted, better ending than Arthas, for at least he had his final act, words, moment to be remembered. (Only made evil because he was rac*st teehee, even though he was objectively a good character until they forced him down a path he didn't need to go.) Arthas, was Warcraft, Arthas was the peak of this MMO, he was the reason Warcraft even go so popular for a reason, most people that didn't play WoW typically, if they played games at the very least, knew who the Lich King / Arthas was. This was the most disrespectful send off they could have done to that character, for he was only sent down this road of no return, for the betterment of his people, his lands and his Kingdom, he wanted to save them, Uther turned his back on Arthas and even in the Shadowmourne quest line, forgives him for what he did, Jaina remembers Arthas for the prince he was, not what he became, Muradin remembers him for being his friend. Yet people like you, unironically enable blizzards terrible writing staff to think this is good, this was an actual disrespectful send off to one of the crown jewels of this game, to not show up as his fainting, flickering soul and talking to his friends, mentors one last time? No sorry he race changed to a wisp and then logged out after 20 seconds. You are the reason this story has gotten to the point of actual dog water, took the story for granted and ignored the retcons, changes for the worse and just accepted it, no player wanted to spend the entirety of shadowlands (Which is a retcon of the Twisting Nether Teehee) to see a wisp be insulted by one of the worst characters to get voice lines, with her own huge amount of retcons and mental gymnastics to justify that she didn't commit warcrimes. Your opinion is dog water and you consume garbage, it shows because you think this is actually 'Good'.
@@LoverBoyDiamond Jesus christ, I've never seen someone cry like this. It's because Arthas didn't deserve this that it suits him so well. I obviously understand his story better than you. Go cry somewhere else. I can tell you stopped reading my comment after the first sentence before you started crying.
@@randumpz7929 It makes no sense because that was all something Blizzard tacked on in Shadowlands to enable their current writing. This is not in line with the story at all. Uther, before the nonsensical explanation that his soul was split in twain, had a perfectly satisfactory ending word on Arthas. He was pissed for the things that Arthas had done, but understood why it happened. "I recall clearly the gleam of pride in his eye as he stood before me, eager to defeat the enemies of the Light... it is this memory of Arthas that I choose to keep in my heart." The Uther angle is just one aspect of how this sucks. Everything about this blows. Jaina saying nothing, Sylvanas saying too much, whoever thinks this was a good idea at Blizzard clearly doesn't care about this game's established story and characters. Although the past three expansions already made that clear.
I was expecting the cinematic to be as bad as the expac and be like this: Anduin fights his new true nature while Sylvanas knee-slides up to him, yelling, “Nooooooo!” Seeing her, he morphs into blue!Arthas but becomes penitent and the two of them skip off into Stormwind together to rules the Alliance as heroes (and her chest size increases to rival Calia’s, so you know they’re going to fight someday). This leaves Tyrande to be angry-woman all over again and go on to form the next big-bad combo by leaping back through the hole from SL to Azeroth, yanking the sword out of Silithus and gathering all the villains of the past into the SuperFriends of baddies. The baddies will include such notable characters as Magni, the ghost of Cairne, a named Orc (doesn’t matter which, pick one) and Bolvar’s daughter. And they will repeatedly refer to her as “Bolvar’s daughter.” So it’s better than that hot mess. But what we could have gotten: Anduin struggles as Baine runs to his aid, but is strengthened by the ghost of BOTH his parents - you know, including his mom who can only be mentioned if we’re naming ships 'Tiffin.' He comes to his senses. There’s our Alliance and Horde representation - there’s no need for Saurfang to show up out of nowhere for no reason. Then as Arthas’ soul leaves, it actually looks like him, and the 3 other people who are important in this scene, Uther, Sylvanas and Jaina all get a chance to converse with him. Arthas and Sylvanas each take blame for their parts; Jaina and Uther express their sorrow at how things have turned out. Arthas and Sylvanas realize they share a similar fate based on their actions and leave to atone (see them in 3 expacs). Jaina cries and Uther turns away but it’s clear he’s tearing up as well. Kudos to the writing team if they can use dialogue callbacks in the scene. Cue dramatic music.
Same here and I also cried foul as it means that Arthas will never get to be with his father and all those he knew in life because he ceases to exist. Of course, Blizzard would likely find a way to bring him back if they REALLY wanted to do so.
@@girlgarde Well they created a realm to bring back Uther, and they made time travel to bring back Grom and Gul'dan at it's time, why not with Arthas at some point?.

Why his father or saurfang arent redeemed???because their souls are broken and destroyed but sylvanas illidan and azhara are not broken
Sylvanas basically telling Arthas's soul to fuck off is very on the nose for Blizzard.
In the process, we just might learn more about him and the others whose lives were forever impacted by the choices Arthas made."
March 2022: "Flicker ball go spoof, lul"
(This is not my comment btw, i just wanted to share it since it's so fking funny)
and so fething true.
except thats exactly what we got in uther's story? all the flashbacks with arthas in them? i guess the player base kind of forgot.
Gladly I did not drink anything the time I read this comment. A legend! An almighty king! .... Spoof! xD
New SJW WOW creators: Take that toxic cis gender men!
@@RebirthStar well remember everything about the blades of the fallen Prince were drained away in the BFA prepatch.
Hey, you're right...🤔
Edit: the least Sylvanas could do for Arthas is forgive him because she was at the same level as he.
As for Jaina and Uther, they too should have talked to Arthas, at least.
This is so true, I totally agree with you!
I am just, speechless. In a bad way.
Arthas "Glowing Ball" Menethil:
"Remember.. remember me. Remember that i once lived."
N'zoth cinematic was short, but this one was just bad and pointless ahha, kinda like the Shadowlands
Yeah, exactly.
YoshiP, at least, knows how to treat a villain that you come to love...with respect.

1.: to let Sylvanas say the last words to Arthas and
2.: that they picked those words for him...
Arthas will NEVER be forgotten. One of the most tragic figures in gaming history.
let's be honest: he was a big asshole even before becoming a death knight.

I loved those 2 but it got worse after that
Wanna see Saurfang, Varian, and Arthas have a storyline in the Shadowlands?

@@salehryan2906 So, neither of you listened to what I said either, or play the games at all, especially Warcraft 3. Sure, he lost his mind after he grabbed Frostmourne. I never questioned that.
(He was basically tricked in to finding Frostmourne)

he did kill everyone in lordaeron
This atrocity against her own race of origin provoked a new wave of Alliance-Horde hatred and violence, sending Azeroth into bloody warfare once again."
I'm just trying to say that neither was better or worse than the other.

I mean Sylvanas was WARchief and at war against alliance for a while now, ("bUt TeLdRaSsiL hAd onLy ciViLiAns", who the fuck belived that?XD it was as guarded as any other city, it had it own fleet and army etc.)
Btw, killing civilians is a war crime because of Geneva Convention, can't recall any treaties in Warcraft that say what is right or wrong at war.
On the other hand Arthas was a paladin and a protector of his people, but he decided if a part of population is corrupted he must slaughter all of his subjects.

They retconned Arthas Menetihil’s ending at the end of Wrath in the service of propping up the worst villain of all time.
Blizzard traded “I see only darkness for me” for “Hi kids, my name’s Mr. Nipples!
What they've done to Arthas, ensures i'll never forget his name. He deserved a redemption, not ... this...
For them to so casually throw away the most iconic character of the Warcraft universe is tantamount to treason. I briefly played early BfA after a hiatus from early WoD, and though i considered coming back for SL, i am glad i didn't.
This does make me sad. Not the ending itself, but how we got NOTHING from Arthas until the end in which we only get to see a flicker of his soul. It's just so damn disappointing, especially for me who started playing during Wrath. Arthas has always been the golden standard for a character in WoW.
I miss deathwing and kiljaeden :( those guys were REAL bosses.
Arthas: Hey why does Ner'zhul get a pass while I don't?
Despite how bad Shadowlands and the lore was, I really do think this cinematic is really good. Mainly because of Varian, but it's still really good!
same especially anything relating to arthas too
Absolutely shocked.
They want a new chapter i assume 😄
man anduin being the new lich king and taking he's seat at ice crown citadel would have been some epic shit, it fits him well.
"there must alway's be a lich king" means nothing now.... they destroyed the soul reason i started playing wow for.
Boo hoo!😤
Thank you Blizzard for continuing the general vibe of absolute disappointment in Shadowlands.
Landscape: Boring.
Villains: Idiotic AF
Story: See above
And now you give us the end to one of the most beloved, feared, powerful and interesting Characters in the history of gaming I might say, in the form of a blue gas cloud.
All that was missing, was the fart noise when he faded.
Always though slyvannas would know about Arthur's soul been in the sword. She always hated him and would be a good way the jailer to please her and get her to his bidding more
I absolutely love how "Arthas, my son" turns into 'Lament of the Highborne" as Sylvanas talks about becoming Arthas
Three things:
She got a big missing chunk of her soul back. It made a difference.
Blizzard's raging boner for Sylvanas just destroys everything...
I laughed so hard at this. I am not apologizing. As soon as Anduin said, "Arthas?" it was laugh freakin city.
I mean, he has been dead for a decade now and wasnt himself for a much longer time. Even for Jaina there is not much left to cry over.
There is nothing left to justify of Stratholme
Fade and be forgotten? Isn't Arthas thrown in the Maw as shown in Bastion: Afterlives trailer? How did he end up in Anduin's sword?!
Maybe the jailor trapped his soul in the sword?
@@thanakritk.2668
I thought Arthas soul was split in two, I am not sure if that's his only soul that faded! 🤔
Arthas was the best part of WoW. The Wisp = The end of WoW that went out like a whipper.
I'm amazed that even as a ball of light, Arthas still had more character than Sylv
Normal people: sleeping in 1:35h (am)
Me: :'( ehh.. Arthas, you will never be forgotten. R.I.P :'(
I don’t think this is the last time we see Arthas.
Start of shadowlands: Arthas is coming back! Hes here I can feel it!!!
March 2022: Erm.... well, we werent wrong 😂😂😂
The name of Arthas Menethil will never be forgotten, unlike yours, the dead huntress, killer and destroyer. Arthas tried to save everyone by sacrificing himself, and you're just a pawn in the wrong place at the wrong time. Silvana, you're nothing.
its almost 20 years of my life .... how can we forget arthas
since I was 13 until now ....
unforgotten moments:
illdan becomes metamorph
arthas defeats illidan
NOW WE ARE ONE
illidan's back
U SHALL BE KING
mannoroth : whaa .. what is this ... guldan , what have you done
archimonde death
illidan returns again
and now ... arthas is gone
I felt like sylvanas got the last word coz she was the last one to get some sort of closure for Arthas's actions, which she didn't have after wotlk.
I really wanted to see more of Arthas...
You think you do, but you dont :)
What for its just rehashing and people complain when they do it but bitch when they dont its like you dont know wtf you want
You will see more of him on next expansion: The Voiding Crusade. Where he will lead the Army of Light and the wakened Dragon Furry Titan against the Voidlords and their mysterious masters.
WotLk was the best expansion, so much fun, so accessible, so many friends playing - oh well, been 4 years since I left, just came here out of curiosity to see what they did to Arthas....sad.
bye
@@WhiteUnicorn72 bye your arse? I left 4 years ago
@@WhiteUnicorn72 more copium son
Huh, Dragonsong cutscene is a lot different than I remember
I actually teared up a bit when Anduin's father appeared but I teared more when Arthurs soul faded
Sylvana talking about judgment make me wanna puke on blizzards banners
Felt like I was watching bad fanfiction.
As someone, who never had father, Varian speaking to Anduin makes me cry.
Who else got emotional seeing varian and saurfang?
Also idk how i feel about this end to arthas
In a way its what i always wanted for the end to arthas
People always forget that arthas committed horrible crimes even before he ever laid eyes upon frostmourne
And thats not even counting stratholme
I always said if we saw arthas in the shadowlands, wed see him being punished and simply leave him there to his fate
Now he has oblivion...and i really dont know how to feel
Stratholme is a big mess of morally grey that Sylvanas could never understand tbf.
And honestly its more they did nothing while they expanded stuff like Mournblades (Which Frostmourne is one) and Blizzards love for changing everything. Like they could've used Arthas as an example of what Mournblades do and why they should try and rescue Anduin from one.
Stratholme is not a crime at all
It's just Uther being so pure, that it blinded him preventing him from the truth that the whole City is already gone, whereas Arthas did the right thing. Sad, that his part is over, WoW can't be the same forme furthermore. Too many new faces, a handful of the best and old
@@juraburlaca5807 stratholme was such a screwed up situation that there was no right answer
Did arthas do the right thing?
Imagine a character so strong even after 20 years you still make them shiver and kneel.
(Only made evil because he was rac*st teehee, even though he was objectively a good character until they forced him down a path he didn't need to go.)
Arthas, was Warcraft, Arthas was the peak of this MMO, he was the reason Warcraft even go so popular for a reason, most people that didn't play WoW typically, if they played games at the very least, knew who the Lich King / Arthas was.
I was expecting the cinematic to be as bad as the expac and be like this:
Anduin fights his new true nature while Sylvanas knee-slides up to him, yelling, “Nooooooo!” Seeing her, he morphs into blue!Arthas but becomes penitent and the two of them skip off into Stormwind together to rules the Alliance as heroes (and her chest size increases to rival Calia’s, so you know they’re going to fight someday). And they will repeatedly refer to her as “Bolvar’s daughter.”
So it’s better than that hot mess. But what we could have gotten:
Anduin struggles as Baine runs to his aid, but is strengthened by the ghost of BOTH his parents - you know, including his mom who can only be mentioned if we’re naming ships 'Tiffin.' He comes to his senses.
Bro the moment Arthas soul vanished i felt my heart crushed.
@@parkouremaster don't hope on it. cuz if they do, that will be another attempt at luring his fanbase to back to game, just like how they did with the bastion promo prior to SL release.
