  • Hey All! This is a movie request by a viewer. I didn't really know what to expect going in, but holy crap. There is no mental preparation you can do for this one. It hits you with a sledgehammer of Weird! Also, it's quite enjoyable, so there's that too.

hi hi!! at 50:21 the "you look familiar" could be because he went to school with hank, its really one of the only ways i could think of them possibly knowing each other, because hank doesn't really mention having a job or anything :P

I'm so incredibly happy you both enjoyed this film. I was definitely confused as well at first but I related a lot to Hank.
I admit even people mentioning farting/ pooping, and all of that type of stuff grosses me out. When people laugh at those things I never found it funny in the slightest. This film is literally the 1st time I ever actually did laugh because it made me understand! There are so many things that aren't accepted to do in front of others and sometimes it takes finding your soulmate, whether romantic or otherwise, to realize that you are able to let your guard down. I legit couldn't even say either word out loud until my previous relationship confronted me / brought it to my attention that I avoided saying such stuff. It's still hard for me to personally say, but I don't get as disgusted when I hear others say it. Now it makes me laugh a little because I just think about this film when people mention it.
I've had many times where I let my fear of how others would react dictate whether I did stuff or not. And his debilitating fear of not letting someone know how he really felt was something I definitely related to as well. I've had a few horrible experiences when I have told people I liked them. So it became easier to just wait until the other person brought it up so I didn't have to have it happen again. And just not say anything if it wasn't brought up. One of the times the guy pretended to like me and we had a notebook where we could write stuff back and forth to one another. We would pass it to each other to respond each day during when we had lunch together in school. Then one day his friend walked the notebook over instead. She wrote a really horrible note to me and basically he was going over everything I was writing with his friend group and they were laughing and making fun of me for it. I literally ran out of the lunch room crying and started eating in the bathroom instead. On a separate occasion, a different person I admitted liking said, "Ew," before laughing with his friends, just to name 2 examples.
Just like hank he was so used to feeling alone and having to be creative with his time. Yet he yearned for a friend like Manny. Someone who would accept him and be honest with him no matter. And someone who wouldn't insult and reject him like his father. He said their relationship wasn't the best because they couldn't communicate properly which I felt like that carried over to him not being able to communicate his feelings to the person he liked.
This also felt like a person suffering from depression trying to regain their will to live. He was at rock bottom and ran away to be alone, which is something animals tend to do when they feel like they are at the end of their lives.
I also got a sense of parenting from this, his parents were misguided and he was inadvertently figuring out how to "parent," in order to gain an understanding from their perspective. It was his way of realizing what his parents had to go through to raise him which helped him learn how to communicate better with them. And it helped him realize society's constricting standards that are passed down through the different generations. There are so many layers to this film and I love it.
I wanted to see it since I first heard about it. Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe are literally 2 of my favorite actors, they are both in my top 5 because of their versatility and seeing them together was such a treat!

So am I the only one that had farting contest with my children. In my family we have pride in ours and even go out of the way to embarrass each other in public. There is nothing like ripping a loud one behind your kid in a crowded store and blaming them. It builds character.
