I’m only taking a guess , but it’s known fact that batteries in EVs do wear out and are a consumable , and the more miles you put on the vehicle, the more the value of that battery vehicle will suffer more depreciation.
We all know how massively expensive an EV battery is, and it’s not only the worth of the vehicle that diminishes , it’s also the range of the battery.
So , it is doubly important for those who may want to resell an EV to try and keep the miles down and the range up to minimise depreciation.

How many ICE drivers fill up when the gauge shows a half or a quarter and always put a set amount in so never actually filling up?
And yes, with my EV because I can top up on very cheap electricity overnight I do set an upper limit. In fact, I set it once and it's set until I change it.
I do this partly because it's good battery management for what is an expensive purchase but also because I don't want the car charging after the cheap rate overnight electricity window closes. I am happy for the batrery to run low as I near journey's end because I know that it will be getting a restorative charge whilst I sleep. I have not yet seen it below 5% though.
      Sound economics. Good practise.
When we go on the occasional longer trip (over 200 miles) I will charge above 80% to give me greater range but so far I have never charged to 100% although the previous owner probably did. I got the car with just under 12,000 miles on the clock. When I stop for a comfort break I just plug the car in to take on some juice whilst I am tending to my own needs. I then just return to the car, unplug and go. No waiting, no inconvenience, no fuss.
I have worked out the real world range in the car in the depths of winter and the heatwave of summer so I know what to expect from it whenever I am using it. Surely the driver of an ICE vehicle knows how far his car will go on half a tank, quarter of a tank, or even when the gauge shows empty? I did when I ran ICE vehicles. If you don't then you are an idiot.
The official average range (WLTP) of my car is 262 miles. In the coldest, wettest, worst part of winter and doing short local journeys only I will see a range of 180 miles. Go on a longer run (20 miles up to 200 miles) I will get 220 miles. In the spring (now) or autumn I will get 230 miles around town and 260 miles on the road. In the summer I have had 308 maximum out of it but usually 290.
Oh, I bought my car outright for hard cash. Somebody leased it for 2 years and did 6,000 miles per year. I bought it from the lease company saving a huge amount from the "as new" price but with 6 years battery warranty remaining and 1 year manufacturers warranty on the rest of the car. The lease company added an extra 6 months to that but so far nothing has gone wrong.
I expect to keep this car for at least a decade because it does everything I need with absolute ease and costs me about 3 pence per mile* in fuel. The insurance is the same as the old ICE and other than an annual MOT and servicing (minus the oil etc of an ICE) there are no extra costs.
And finally, I live in a Victorian terraced house in the UK with no off-street parking and yet I can charge at home. How? Well, many UK local authorities are approving schemes allowing cables to be laid across pavements with proper cable protectors or even the installation of a cable gully where the cable is in the gully and the top of the gully is covered and flush with the pavement surface. So that 44% of people who cannot charge at home is probably closer to 30% now.
      * This is inclusive of charging at home as well as the very occasional few extra kW's when taking a comfort break on a longer journey.

    • @mikewhitehead50

@@michaelgoode9555I generally fill a ICE about a 1/3 of a tank. It gets boring otherwise, plus I don’t want to carry the extra weight. Now I drive past the petrol station as people queue on a cold morning to fill up while I’ve just sat down in my warm car with a full charge. Can’t say I’m that envious.
Most people in these comments drive old cars and don’t want to be forced into buying old electric cars, which is fair enough. It doesn’t excuse the misguided ideas they have though. Talking about a public charger being an EV’s natural habitat yet there’s hardly an EV there.

When you set up you're lease deal you can choose the annual milage that suits you're needs. If you drive on average 10k per year then you select that option in the configurator. You can also factor in service costs, tyre replacement etc. If you only do approximately 5k per year then your lease is going to be less expense than a 10k one. Also the more deposit you pay upfront reduces your monthly payments. The highest annual milage I have seen available has been 20k per year . The milage is based on your lease term for eg 10k each year for 3 years so if you go over you're 30k at the end of 3 years you could incur charges.

I have just come across this Channel and what a load of nonsense, Before the Key Board Warriors get busy, I am an EV owner but I do not believe it’s the answer to motoring issues however it is part of the Transport mix. Let me explain further. The EV I have does what it says in the tin, I use it for Business 150 miles a day and it charges every night at home, now I know that not possible for everyone I have no issues with Charging in on a fast charge when I am about working or leisure the only place I had with charging was Blackpool I could only find one charger. And how do you explain I have been to the Cairngorms at Xmas on holiday the milage was 1500 miles from Cheshire and returned & it snowed and was cold with no issues Charging and no problem starting in the cold or very little battier Derogation. I have done that journey twice this year Plus business trips To Somerset & Devon plus the Lakes for leisure it extended the journey time to just over 90 minutes due to charging and before you ask it’s not a Tesla. The Battery range only dropped by 1 Kw, and no one mentions most EVs have two batteries one for propulsion and one for ancillaries. All it takes is planning and charging when you cannot when have to, we all need comfort breaks. For Work I usually have lunch whilst it is charging id needed, so why run the battery down to 1% that makes no sense at all. Have you looked on Zap Map and seen how many Fast chargers there are between ST Ives and Northampton I lost count of over 200 fast chargers. I have a range of 260 miles and it varies little on most driving conditions. I have been stuck in traffic on motorways for hours in the dark and rain and have had no range worries. On a fast charger it takes from 40% charge to 95% about 24-30 minutes so what’s the problem? To call them a milk float is silly if not downright stupid as a Milk float is as far-removed technology-wise to a modern EV as the Steam Car is the Combustion engine. I do agree that with Vans it's not suitable yet. Also, if you have driven Diesels in the '70s & '80s Diesels as I have both a Car & Van, they were slow and dirty but could do Hugh Milage This does not apply to some modern Diesels which can only do high mileages due to gearing and technology. Also, it is a fact that petrol engine history is littered with issues and failures that’s a fact. It took time to develop the combustion as now with an EV development is ongoing. No one disagrees that EVs are not there yet, but in future, the Solid-state battery perhaps is the future for EVs, however Hydrogen I doubt that it is (Remember the Hindenburg, anyone?) You can do all the video challenges you like and if it's not like for like then the E V will fail. It is a myth that you will be having your combustion engine car taken off you in 2030/35 combustion engines for good are bad will be around for many years yet. So, the EV is part of that mix. The dealings I have had with EVS will not deter me from having another one. the infrastructure has improved drastically in the last two years it's not there yet but in my experience, it is getting there. When to time comes to change, I will look at all options whether that be EVE or combustion depending on Lifestyle & work so you can rant as much as you like. I will say the EV has reduced my Fuel Bill from £90 per week to just under £30 per week. I don’t understand people like you Tubers & so-called influencers ranting on about this if you don’t like EVs don't buy one it’s as simple as that, We must respect each other's views if people drive EVs is their choice it’s my choice to have an EV just as it is your choice to drive a combustion Engine and we must respect each other not keep doing silyl rants about EVS Yes it heavy Car but who mentions the weight of a Modern Combustion SUV? And then there are fires but there are fires in all cars and vans no one looks at those statistics you can go on & on and on comparing. Of course, we have freedom of speech to say what we like within reason however there are two sides to every story., however, there are more important issues in life than how far can an EV go. Yes, it's an important subject but we have got the message so please let all move on It is a dead subject it's pointless. I now wait for the keyboard Warriors to go ballistic should be fun! Because you will not wind me up cancelling my views.

*YES,* the Metro is my favourite EV. 😊👍
¹ much smaller windows than the Metro has and THAT is nice and CLEAN

I get 600 miles to a tank of petrol and it only takes 10 minutes to fill up, and best of all, after 10 years, it will still hold the same amount of fuel as it did when it was new. I paid £9.4k for a C200SE Estate Auto with 154k miles and 3.5 years old ex corporate lease. I think I dodged a bullet with that £50k pile of doo doo.

Any idea why he could only get charged to 80%? Some limitation imposed by the car's system, or by the charging station?
    Just curious.

You can set the max charge level in the on board computer for when you're charging at home and don't need max range daily as better for the battery life, and 80% is optimum.
Simple to change it to 100% when going on a longer run.

The driver should RTFM.. It defaults to 80% unless you tell the car to charge to 100% Two reasons for this:- (1) the charging curve on a lithuim battery slows down exponentially after 80%. (In English that means that a car on

You obviously don’t understand the methods of calculating lease payments. You can state the mileage parameters to suit yourself. It’s shown in the way you point out, to give a reasonable monthly cost. Nothing to do with a grand conspiracy. If you don’t like the interiors from Audi, don’t use one. Then you don’t have to look at it. Simples.

I've got two EVs at the moment, a top of the range Porsche and a similar Jaguar. They're absolutely fantastic, so I don't know what all you people putting them down are on about.
They're ridiculously fast, extremely economical and literally the only fault I can find with them is if you go mad and take a corner too fast, they tend to fly off and get stuck under the sofa....

The mileage restriction is down to depreciation (and therefore resale value) due to battery degradation. Who wants to buy a high-mileage EV?!

The Audi has a battery life extender setting so will default to 80% unless you go into the charging settings and slide it to 100%. It’ll then charge up. It would have got you to your destination based on that. It will default back to 80% again afterwards.
