Ive been using one of these for around 14 years, best thing I ever bought, it must have saved me thousands of hours, mine is as good as the day I bought it.

Thanks for this Lars, I had forgotten that I bought one of the Space Navigators years ago and never really used it. Just dusted it off, plugged it in and I'm up and running. Awesome.

Just got one off Amazon for $109 shipped last week. Went through the set up and training program that it comes with. Took about 30 minutes. Love it! I can't imagine going back to just a mouse. If you have $100 bucks to through down you should definitely get one!

I bought my 1st space navigator 10 years ago for use with solidworks and I am now using a spacemouse pro with Creo. The engineer who first introduced me to them told me he'd never do Cad work without one again and he was right.

I have been inspired by Lars in the past (and I miss his down to earth helpful videos - but fully understand the effort and time they took). Anyway, I am a home used doing bits and pieces in Fusion 360 (for 3D printing and laser cutting) and I found that my right wrist was starting to hurt (like pull on the muscles/tendons leading into the thumb).
So, as Lars is someone I respect I looked at the Spacemouse in some detail. I ordered a wireless one and it arrived today. I have been using it in Fusion and it will certainly take some time to get the acurate finesse that is needed BUT even as a beginner I found it better than mouse wheel, hold mouse wheel and holding down keyboard buttons.
I even found it useful in scrolling/zooming other programs. I think that it will have been money well spent.
By the way from the UK it was cheapest to order direct from 3Dconnexions rather than dealers or Amazon.
    Thanks again Lars.

Just wanted to let you know that I bought one (SpaceMouse Compact) based upon your recommendation, and it is just wonderful! I really like it, and it has sped up my CAD work immensely! I was able to use it awkwardly after 1 day, and it took about 3 days before I was completely comfortable with it, and now I am working much faster with it. Please keep up the good work! (ps. I'm moving to Fusion 360 from Alibre, so your insights are very much appreciated!)

I've been using one for 10 years now. I couldn't live without it. The company I work for uses NX and it works flawlessly. But I do not use any of the buttons, I still use my keyboard. I also just use the scroll wheel on my regular mouse for zooming in and out.
Anyway, that's just my two cents worth.

Lars, I've owned and used my 3D Connexion Cad Mouse and SpacePilot Pro for about 3 yrs. I do have some of the buttons programmed for some functions, easier than looking up keyboard commands. I love them! They are great for CAD/CAM and I also use them for "normal" functions. I thank you for all of your valuable info, and please keep up the excellent work.

I was able to get an enterprise 2 kit through work. So it comes with the cadmouse pro and mouse pad and honestly I love every single piece. It is an absolute game changer. Going back to a 2 button mouse is terrible. navigating is so much easier. My right wrist feels so much better because i'm able to work with both hands now. It looks expensive until you use it and realize it's an absolute must have.

    Hehe, love your intro ;)
I've had and used several of these since the early 2000s. Everything you said about these is true.
Sometimes I've had to do modeling on-site somewhere and forgot my mobile wireless space mouse and regretted every minute of it.
Contrary to your use of the larger one, I love setting up and using the buttons for quick access to my common commands. Takes only a couple hours for the button locations to become second nature for me... I just have to refrain from changing the button short cuts or I'm messed up for the next few hours as my brain struggles with the switch!🙄

I used one of the original SpaceBalls in the 90's on our SGI's with Ideas, Catia, ProEngineer, etc at GT and it was amazing. I bought one of these new ones and absolutely love it. Like others have said, watch for used ones and as Lars said, they are really well built and last. Unfortunately one program I've found that doesn't work is Vcarve Pro and they've said they won't support it.

I bought an older used Spacepilot pretty cheap on ebay for use at home and then one of the guys in the computing department at work gave me one. Apparently it had been ordered, but never used and was about to be thrown out. So I then had the same setup at home and at work.
You often see batches of older models being sold cheap.
I really miss having one when I have to show someone how to do something in fusion on their computer and I hate the limited realestate of a laptop. Then again, when I'm at work I miss my 43" 4K Monitor!

Just to echo other comments, the rubber coating degrades over time. I also had to remove the cap (tricky operation), clean it off, then use Plasticoat Rubber to reapply the comfort finish.

I got the $109 version of the Space Navigator on Amazon back in November of 2017 and I love it. I don't think I could go back and use Fusion 360 without it. The first thing I do when I load Fusion 360 up and then my model is grab the Space Navigator and start moving around the model just because it look so cool on the screen. That seems to still work under windows 10, If over time still works and improves my Fusion360 experience then I will consider buying the $100 one if is worth it. Thanks for the tip!

    Wow great timing!
I literally just got a second hand (but new unused!) SpaceNavigator (I paid £60 / $80) - the smaller one without the wrist rest and extra buttons in this video.
Its amazing, takes a bit of learning though. I am starting to get it without thinking now after a few hours of use.
Makes navigating so smooth and easy, like having the model in your hand!
I suggest slowing down the speed at first (try about 1/4 the scale then slowly up it as you get used to it).
Its really customizable, can change the axis, the buttons, even setup your own macros and "wheels" in the button menus etc. But as Lars mention, I find I prefer to use keyboard buttons for things like "line" "circle" etc.
And yes the quality is super awesome, soooo smooth!

I have used the Space Navigator for many, many years and it works really well. The only complaint I have is that the rubberized coating on the knob breaks down after a few years and becomes really icky. I had to use alcohol and lots of elbow grease to rub all the coating off. Underneath the coating is a shiny, smooth plastic surface.

It's a great device, may take some time to get it integrated into one's workflow; but luckily it is not a mouse replacement. Its great during a review / spot check period for sure as you would be using a 2d mouse and likely meta keys on keyboard or house and with the 3d mouse its a smooth joystick / helicopter like exportation of the design.

Stick with the simple one. My advice after 10 years. I had Pilot and Pilot pro, for 9 years. 90% of your time will be on rotation, zoom, pan and couple commands. I use eight shortcuts on the two configurable buttons. The comfort is great, your mind will sink in the project in seconds ! Once again stay on the simplest, 60£ !

I was ready to place an order for the wireless combo until I noticed the CAD Mouse supports BlueTooth but the SpaceMouse requires their USB dongle. I'm on a MacBook Pro with USB C, so that means an additional adapter, too.
What are you guys in my situation doing that truly want wireless without additional cables and dongles?
    Thank in advance!

Hi scottosds Thank you for watching!
YEs, as you can see in th4 video, I do have an extra dongle so I can run the usb dongle on my mac. I'm not a big fan of that, but that is Apple's fault in my opinion

    • @scottosds
      @scottosds 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree that the decision by Apple to ONLY include USB-C on their "Pro" line doesn't seem right.
However, since every notebook I've had over the last 5-7 years has included built-in Bluetooth, I think a worse decision was 3DConnexion not to support such a standard, especially when it applies to a portable solution.
I will probably still buy their stuff because of your recommendation, but am really disappointed in having to use a wireless dongle when wireless technology is already present.
Thanks for the videos and the recommendation.

I have recently started using Fusion 360 and Inventor for paying jobs. I have also been fighting against buying the Enterprise version because of the cost - but I am a gadget-freak and love the cool stuff! I am pretty certain I would not use the buttons either for anything other than non-CAD features (if that is possible). 3DConnexion probably will not like this comment, but thank you for saving me from myself - I have to pay for this with my own money.

Hey Lars, I want to thank you for your great videos. They're VERY helpful.
I have a 3Dconnexion Enterprise that I use with Modo, Rhino, SketchUp, 3DCoat, etc. but in Fusion 360 I can't find a way to constrain the y axis so that it remains vertical when I rotate (AKA Lock Horizon)
I have Constrained Orbit checked so that SHIFT+MiddleMouse will orbit with the horizon locked but as soon as I navigate with the 3Dconnexion mouse the horizon is no longer locked and the model is allowed to roll. I didn't find anything in preferences that has the desired effect. What am I missing?

I've changed the Z axis to be up in default modeling orientation. Unfortunately each time I use the "Isometric View 1" it changes the view proper fitted but with Y axis up (as if I didn't changed the setting) and not as if I use the "home" button in view cube.

In such way that when you have some kind of prolonged model (lets say 300x10x10 mm) you usually get stuck with camera movement; sometimes it won't move in one of the axis (fusion makes sensitivity on that axes very low) or something like that; you get into situation where you can't Comfortably rotate/pan/zoom with SpaceNavigator;

Does anybody have the same issue as I do? The side rubber pieces (between the 'metal' and the buttons) of my 3DConnexion CadMouse Wireless seems to be stretching with use and is now too big for the gap it is meant to be filling - and this after only using the 3DConnexion equipment for 5 months. This results in a very uncomfortable grip and that has been quite an embarrassment in the office after spending $160 on a mouse that now looks like a piece of broken equipment.

Hi Lars great video :) Just wanted to mention that as well as the fact it is a top end 3 buttons mouse, built specifically for CAD, the 3Dconnexion CadMouse is different mainly because of our software! The mouse is integrated into most 3dcad software along with the SpaceMouse through the API, so that buttons and operations can be mapped for different functions for all your different programs, and also even specific areas of each app. You can even program it to run common commands in a sequence with a single click, or open a radial menu :)

Lars.. I have used the 3DConnexion Space Mouse Wireless for a long time now. It is probably the best peripheral I have ever bought. Its too bad that none of the 3D printer slicer software applications support it. If you want to take wrist papering to the next level, ditch the mouse and get a trackball for your mouse hand. I use the Logitech Cordless Optical Trackman. Best trackball ever. Its too bad they stopped making it. They do have two other ones though. Get a trackball you will love it.
