As a trans masculine knitter, I really appreciate you taking the time talking to us about men's wear. I feel like some sweaters out there would be fine for unisex styling but are only shown on female bodies so its hard to get a sense how it would look on a masculine body, but there's so few men;s sweaters listed, and frankly, I'm of the opinion men's fashion in general deserves a little bit extra love.
I’m soo with you here and am really happy that this video may help to shine some light on not only sweaters that WORK for men’s bodies, but that REPRESENT their bodies. And I totally agree. We need more menswear in the pattern scroll. Look, at least if folks are knitting ‘unisex’ or ‘gender neutral’ designs, I’d like to see the photos reflect that. It’s immensely helpful.

If you can find some older knitting pattern magazines (from the last century - 70's, 80's and into the 90's - the wool companies put out a magazine every quarter with some amazing knitting patterns for both men and women that were intended to be knit with their yarn. There were some really amazing classic patterns. If you could find some of those you could be knitting classic men's sweaters for the rest of your life. And women's as well.

Same here! I’m nonbinary and would really like to make a masculine sweater that’s not super boxy and just makes me look like a rectangle.
I even had a hard time finding a "manly" scarf pattern to make my dad for Christmas. I ended up with the "Dudester" scarf, which is free on Ravelry and came out very nice - just in case anyone is looking for something like that.

Awesome! It’s really easy to adjust the width too. I ended up making the pattern a little narrower so it wouldn’t be super wide with the yarn I used.

I appreciate you taking the time to highlight these sweaters. As a male knitter, it gets frustrating clicking/searching through Ravelry trying find designs for men (even with the male filter selected - lol).
I’m almost shocked there were no Sari Nordlund patterns on here! She’s got some great gender neutral patterns that works great for guys. Wayne and Billie are amazing cabled sweaters I’ve made for myself.
Hi Andrew! Thank you for watching! So I totally get what you’re saying about Sari’s designs and I’m glad you suggested them here. However I was really trying to find designs that featured photos of men so that I could visualize how the sweater would look on a man. I wish more designers of gender neutral patterns showed the design on a man AND a woman to help emphasize/demonstrate that neutrality.
@@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS Totally get that, especially for the purposes of this video. And even just browsing Rav, it would be great to see it on a guy before diving in to a pattern to see that it works! Just had to put Sari out there as a tried-and-true designer of sweaters that work for guys. :)
@@sosewnknits I'm glad to know that though Andrew. I'll definitely take a look at the Wayne and Billie as possibilities for Branden. Honestly, I've recently become obsessed with Sari's patterns for my own knitting. She understands construction and I always appreciate that.
Funny you mention ‘heirloom’ piece, as I sit here watching the video in a cardigan that my grandmother made for my grandfather when they were still alive, in very sturdy nice quality 100% wool with lots of cables and other design. 😊
Tayler, I appreciate that you put your selections in a Ravelry bundle. It’s so much easier to go look at the bundle than each individual item I’m interested in. I also like that you can put some “bonus” items in the bundle.
I have knit the Timberline in fisherman's wool and it is a LOT of work but it is so WORTH IT! the fit is great even though I initially had my doubts. I seriously love the pattern (and yes it is literally like 27 pages) but I will wear it for the rest of my life if I can. It's a huge investment of time but the product is fantastic

Congrats on the top surgery! I'm 3 months post-op, and still mentally adjusting my chest measurement when scoping out sweater sizes/yarn requirements. I have a vest on the needles that I cast on before surgery, and its saving grace is the 6-10 inches of positive ease the pattern advises.
thank you for bringing up the neckline! it seems like such an odd thing, but the majority of sweater patterns i find on ravelry (which are made with women in mind) have huge scooping necklines that just aren't featured in menswear. i know a lot of men could pull that off, but it's just not the sort of thing i personally like in a sweater since i prefer a masculine shape/fit and it can get a little tough to change if you don't know what you're doing.
Yes totally! I completely understand the struggle. And I think you hit it in the head when you say ‘with women in mind’. I think that in order for a design to be truly unisex, it needs to be designed with both body shapes in mind and if that means there are two versions, than that is how it should be. Jared Flood and BT in general are so good at this. It’s easy to click the unisex tag when adding a pattern to Ravelry, but I think there’s a level of responsibility that comes with that to truly ensure your design was produced with both sexes in mind, features photos that emphasize that, and doesn’t contribute to a really confusing and frustrating search experience in Ravelry when using the filters. I suppose I stand on a bit of soapbox about it. Thank you for watching Conor. ❤️
I made the Timberline for my man and it is really gorgeous, he wears it a lot (wich makes me really happy). It's a lot of work but it's a "one more row" project, so it's not so long to make.

I would personally love to try to knit the Zipper Sweater by Petite Knit for my husband (newly weds over here!) for our first Christmas as a married couple! I am absolutely terrified of knitting something that time consuming for someone else! So good to hear even experienced knitters feel the same.
I found Dad-son sweater pattern, perfect for the manly shape- thicker arm, wide shoulder and waist shaping! But i got lost in gauge so i went with Sweater No 14 but added waist shaping, less boxy, drop shoulder look! Recommend this boyfriend look for boyfriend/husband!
While not as tall, my husband was built much like yours, however, a couple of years ago he had a massive heart attack and developed a prominent belly! They said it is a protective measure the body develops to protect itself! Even though we’re working on this gut, he’s a little embarrassed to wear the lovely sweaters I’ve made for him. Imagine a 160 pound 6’ tall man with a belly hanging out front! He still looks fine to me but I’m trying to find one that might detract from this problem!
If you want to work Timberline Do it! I am currently working it and am loving the process. It is so carefully and beautifully designed and is a pleasure to work. Do it!!!
"Not graced with a lot of height" is an amazing and hilarious euphemism and I hope I remember to use it.
A great source I found for men's sweaters is a book called "Viking Knits". This book has 18 men's sweaters patterns along with a few women's and children's sweaters. What a great resource! I found it at Barnes and Noble but it's also available on Amazon.

I have knit quite a few sweaters for my husband. Since he has long arms and a shorter torso, he likes that I can customize the construction to his liking.
Variety of patterns for men are a bit lacking, so I have bought almost any men’s pattern books that I can get ahold of.
I just may have to make that cozy Timberline sweater, I love cable work.
I don’t think I’m up for knitting a sweater for my husband but I thoroughly enjoyed this run down of possibilities. You do so much research and it’s so appreciated. I would never have known about any of these sweaters. Thanks so much for all you do ❤
I've made 2 Icelandic sweaters for my husband and am now making him the Single Malt by Max the knitter that is awesome! Great video!
I’m working on the Awen by Hudson and west and I love it so far. My son says it’s the nicest looking sweater I’ve ever made. I highly recommend Hudson and west patterns.
There are definitely some contenders here for my next project for my fiancé!
But the Moby Sweater is definitely seamless. All of PetiteKnit’s patterns are seamless from what I know. Most Scandinavian knitters shy away from seaming like it’s the plague. It’s usually only done for the traditional colourwork jumpers with set in sleeves.
Also I’d say that the patterns for colourwork jumpers from the likes of Rauma and Sandnes should be unproblematic to do even though one doesn’t know Norwegian. They mostly just tell you how many stitches to cast on and the pattern as a grid work.
These are really good choices and I appreciate that you noted where body shaping is included

Tayler, 1000 thank you’s for this and 100% yes on neck lines and shaping. I am planning to knit myself my first sweater this year and there are so few men’s patterns with nice neck lines, especially in lighter weights which I prefer in Southern CA. Has almost stopped me from starting anything but a cardigan. Appreciate the list!

There you go again, making a video that will help all of us. I've been thinking of a sweater for my husband, and hearing your thoughts and seeing the patterns was a big help. So, thank you, again! I'm hoping you will do one of these for the sparkle threads that knitters put in their sweaters. Believe it or not, I have found trying to find them really hard. I know there is one business the Grocery Girls talk about all the time, that sells some really nice ones, but the cost is really expensive. I would like to know where to find them where it's not so expensive. Some of the sparkle has piette's and look really good. Thank you for taking the extra time to do these. I love it!
I've planned to knit 2 men's sweaters this year, one for my adult son and one for my husband. I'm very new to sweater knitting and have been searching for patterns. This was awesome! Thank you Taylor 😊 looking forward to seeing which your husband chooses
Thanks Tayler. I have done a little research into men's sweaters, but I also had second thoughts because I just have a boyfriend and the boyfriend curse could be real. Lol! I purchased yarn for Simple Striped Raglan by Patrons Shetland Chunky. It's on hold for now. He is a large man so I think I will wait until I get a ring.😀
The way to break the curse is to knit a strand of hair in the sweater when you make it. I knit my husband of 24 years a sweater when we were dating, my hair was very long, so I think more than one strand ended up woven in by accident!

I sat down to watch this hoping for inspiration for my next sweater and I love your explanation for what you were looking for so I could understand what I might want to look for in patterns.
I also just happened to be wearing my Timberline while watching your video. It was a lot of fun to knit, and it’s a really well written pattern, so I can definitely recommend it! I love wearing mine and always get compliments on it when I do.

I knit the Timberline for my son a few years ago but sadly did not chose the best yarn as it has pilled and the sleeves stretched . I so enjoyed knitting it I would definitely make another ! It is a beautiful cardigan.

I made the clubhouse raglan hoodie by Two of Wands for my hubs. Had to adjust it a little but it was very easy. It’s meant to wear baggy just had to increase the length. It was my first time knitting a sweater that needed adjustments so there was a bit of tinking to get it right
I really enjoyed this video. My husband and I just had our 4 year anniversary, and I was finally like "Oh I guess it's probably about time to get you into a sweater" LOL. I've picked out, with his review, the Single Malt and am going with some wool of the andes blue yarn that he picked out as well!

Thank you for sharing these. Finding things for men is always so difficult. Hubby usually gets socks for gifts as he loves hand knitted socks. As a beginner it was one of the first projects I tackled, before learning that they terrify even some experienced knitters…oops! Lol but since I knitted his first pair about two weeks after picking up my needles for the very first time, it has been the only thing he requested and he will only wear hand knitted socks now, he is spoiled rotten. But sadly he only wants basic socks and only in black, so it does get a little boring lol. The timberline looks perfect for my hubby though and something I can enjoy making.
All your choices are fantastic and I look forward to checking them out further…and I appreciate others sharing their recommendations too. I am going to have a pile of projects to make for him. 😊❤️
Watched this as I’m seaming my Swenson sweater. Knitting for my brother. It’s definitely a labor of love, but it has come out gorgeous! Also my first seamed sweater, so I reached out to Brooklyn Tweed and they responded with a helpful tutorial and a quick reply! I recommend the pattern, but I will say I don’t think I’ll be picking up a cable needle anytime soon 😂
I'd love to see you knit that last one, after all, it could be passed down to the boys! Definitely following.

All of those sweater would look fabulous on your hubby! I agree totally about where they should land on the guy and taper in instead of being boxy. I prefer that for myself too since I don’t have hips.

I am currently “making up” a pattern using Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Knitting Without Tears book. She helps you construct the sweater based on your swatch gauge and the desired chest measurement -wish me luck. I haven’t made a sweater fit anybody for years. 😊

Thank you for this video! I knit my fiancé a sweater last year and due to his constant need to wash the damn thing, it is now large enough to fit a grizzly bear. In other words, he needs a new one. Despite his lack of care, he LOVES everything I knit him & is so knit worthy. I may have to do a sturdy cabled pullover for him. 😂❤
Greetings from England, Tayler. I have recently discovered your channel and I'm really enjoying your insights, recommendations and thoughts. I also have the 6'5" husband model, although probably a little less svelte than yours! He is also VERY fussy about the neck on a sweater and prefers a folded collar that sits on the points of the collar bones. Generally, that means I have to find a way of including short rows on the back of the sweater.
A couple of things I would like to share. I am so pleased you like Martin Storey's designs, even if the one you featured wasn't one! He's my favourite designer too. I like his complex cabling and straightforward shapes. I have knitted his 'Roscoe' colourwork sweater several times for different people and the utterly gorgeous 'Rune' blanket throw as a perfect wedding or housewarming gift. Other designers I like are Erika Knight, Norah Gaughan, Lasse L. Matburg.
I always knit sweaters in the round, even when the pattern is for pieces. It's very simple to do the conversion and I haven't found a pattern I can't convert yet. Similarly, I alter the collar to what the person wants. I am not a fan of the stretched look so it's usually a simple folded collar. Occasionally it needs a little planning to reduce the neck opening where the design shows a wide one but it's always do-able. I find I use a circular needle even when knitting back-and-forth because it's simply more comfortable and much easier to fold up, pop in a bag and take with me.

And every single pattern is absolutely free!! No sign up; just select and print. Their yarn is extremely good value and wonderful quality too although I think it's not available in the U.S. There are also tutorial videos and lots of basic information plus you can post a question if you have a specific issue with a pattern and someone will reply, usually within a couple of days.

@@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS i sure am! i actually managed to rope my younger sister into playing it because i was obsessed and i needed someone else to understand the obsession, and now she's currently on her second playthrough because she can't get enough. we're really hoping for a witcher prequel, maybe before ol' grandpa vesemir was even a baby witcher! it'd be super cool to follow one of the other schools, see what things were like in the so-called "golden era" of witchers.

Thanks for this video! I’ve knitted 2 Svenson sweaters by Jared Flood! I have 2 sons both 6’2” and it was definitely a labour of love! I just finished a Reykjavik soft for my eldest and will gift it to him soon. I’m working (slowly) on a Maurizio by Joan Ho for my other son! Knitting for men (especially those tall long armed guys) is definitely worth the time and effort! Happy knitting!
Great episode. You can't go wrong with Versal, it is such a great pattern and Albina always includes so many options to customize. I thought I had exhausted the search for men's sweater designs yet here were some new ones for me. I prefer a man's pattern vs. a unisex pattern. I knit a unisex pattern from Brooklyn Tweed, Fehling, and my son says it just doesn't feel right. Not broad enough in the shoulders, armholes are too short, overall length is too short. I learned from that to look for patterns written for men given that my guys are tall and broad shouldered.
I'm currently scouting for a pullover for my husband, and there's a lot of overlap there. Thanks! As for ease in the heavy cable cardigan, I think it was Elizabeth Zimmermann who talked about having to factor in the thickness of the fabric when figuring ease. If you were, for extreme examples, wrapping yourself in an inch-thick down comforter versus a sheet of calico, you would need to sort of figure for the interior circumference, not the exterior. Those measurements would be about the same for calico, but not for a comforter. Not sure if I'm explaining that well, but it made sense when I read it. Anyway, happy knitting!

I also prefer the shape you're describing for men ;) My hubby has a V shape and I now take that into account when I knit the body of his sweaters. He loves that they fit his body shape better rather than having more ease at the hem.
And I also agree with the difference between knitting for us VS for others. For us, we just do it like this or like that and we know what we're ready to accept when we knit. I think I have a lot less tolerance for imperfections when I knit for others, especially if it's not a gift but an item we agreed on.

I am currently knitting the moby sweater for my husband! loving it. I am a fairly new knitter (only finished 2 pullover and a bunch of hat) and this pattern is REALLY not that hard to knit and SO SO FUN! I would REALLY recommend trying it. Also, it is seamless and knit in the round from the top :D

I knit a Timberline for my husband and it was certainly a labor of love, but it’s also been worn to death so I know it’s appreciated! I used Cascade 220 superwash for budget and easy care, but it’s definitely stretched over the years. Hubs is totally fine with it though since he does wear it like a cozy housecoat/robe (not much call for a fancy cardigan as a maintenance tech). I’ve offered to knit him other sweaters since, but he seems happy with just the one, so at least I knit a stunning pattern!
I had been toying with the idea of knitting a sweater for hubby for a bit when I saw your post on instagram. He'd always been "too hot" to wear sweaters, but as he's gotten older, he's gotten colder. Combined with living in Colorado, it may be time to dive in. It will definately have to be a cardigan. I am currently leaning toward the Forest Park Cardigan by Kay Hopkins - a little bit of easy colorwork plus a shawl collar. I also love the switchback, but that is a lot of colorwork.
You have got to be the absolute best modern resource for knitting knowledge there is and I only regret not knowing about your channel before like 3 days ago. I've been knitting for 16 years as of this summer and I've only ever knit 2 sweaters, technically one sweater and a hoodie jacket. They were both raglan and luckily fit me fairly well but I could see that I need to customize in the back of the neck area for raglans and I need short row shaping somewhere in the back to compensate for the way my shoulders curve down into my spine so the back and front bottom edging of the whole thing can fall in the same place. it's hard to find appealing patterns for men even these days, and even harder to find techniques for customizing them for my body. It's been years since I've tried another which is sad because sweaters and cardigans could easily be my favorite thing to create, and I've been determined to learn more and try again. I found your "why raglan sweaters don't fit" video this week, was just blown away by the wealth of information in it, and just went to listen to it again when this video was suggested underneath it. I feel sure my next raglan is going to be perfect thanks to you and I'm almost ready to order some Wool of the Andes Tweed that has been calling me. Thank you from the bottom of my stitched heart for all the work you do to be inclusive and share this kind of information.

I just finished the Tilghman sweater for my 6’5 son. Added button band instead of zipper. He couldn’t wait to get it. Fit was fabulous. Also the Neighborly sweater by Amy Herzog is going on my needles next for hubs.
Love these Tipps! The Saven sweater has been on my list for a while now. But I am a bit intimidated by the cables and adjusting it to my (smaller) size. Another great Design for guys is Maxim Cyr's Single Malt Sweater. Quick knit, nice small Details and nice texture.
Also, westknits Dustland sweater is a great Design for guys who like some patterns on their sweaters.
I'm knitting my husband the Jackdaw Pullover by Norah Gaughan. It's a fingering weight cable sweater and it's taking me forever!!!
Good choice. My hubs has a beard and the face hair is hard on a sweater neckline.
Thanks for the great sweater info, Tayler. I'm actually knitting the Versal for my husband, in Nutiden yarn, and it's coming up beautifully. But certainly takes way longer than knitting for me.. I'm 5'1" and he is way taller with such broad shoulders & chunkier body 🤣 On top of that, also knitting a sweater for my son, on 2.5mm needles.. and he's on the other side of Australia, so can't try it on. Wish me luck LOL xx

It's the Cosy Hubby by Marzena Kolaczek, a very relaxed and cosy raglan pattern. My boyfriend told me that he'd love to have a wool sweater, but can't buy one because of his shape, they are all too long and baggy. So I bought several kilograms of DK yarn and I'm making some changes as I go. He's got very broad shoulders but has a very strong upside-down triangle shape and short torso. So I had to do the largest size, then rapidly decrease under the armpits (almost corset-looking 😆), I had to take in some stitches at the mid-back as well because of his strong shoulder muscles. I'm now at the 4th take on the sleeves, as I had to sew close some of the stitches in the armpits (remember, I made the largest size raglan 🙈) and have to decrease much earlier than in the pattern. Oof. I always think "this can't be right" when I see the sweater lying on my bed, but when he tries on, it fits just right. 😳🤷🏻♀️ Now I'm already getting nightmares about it being destroyed after the first wash. 😰 Oh, and in the end, there'll be at least 50 grams of my own long hair knitted in I guess. 🙈

This came out at the perfect time! I'm almost done with a sweater for me, and I'll be starting the Gib II (I think it's II) by Andrea Mowry next. As soon as that pattern came out, I knew I had to make one for my husband. And he even picked out the yarn! Very excited!
I decided to try this pattern as well for my boyfriend but ended up ripping it out and am currently working on Justin's Flannel by Alicia Plummer. Hope your sweater turns out great!!
I love that your hubby picks out the yarn! Mine wants things made but does not go near the yarn much less tell me what colours he might like it in. I used TH-cam videos to learn to knit a few years ago so I could make some items to donate to the Neonatal units for preemies and angels (those who pass before or soon after birth), as crochet items were just too bulky. As soon as I got my tension right and began getting decent with my knitting, hubby requested that I make him several pairs of socks. I was too new to knitting to know I should be too scared to do so, and began knitting him his socks (he now refuses to wear any other socks lol). But sock requests were as far as he got into requests for some time. When I asked what colours and tried to show him some beautiful, masculine sock colours, he grunted “black, I want black socks” and left it at that. For sweaters, if they are Aran in design, they must be cream, white or beige lol. For everything else, my choices are black, navy, or dark green and at a push if I wish to be extravagant, he might cope ok with maroon/burgundy. I love when the kids in the family want sweaters, even the boys, as they want the bright colours, the funky patterns, which are a delight to knit. I love that your hubby participates.that is wonderful!
Loved the ones you picked, but you might want to look at Natasja Hornby's men's sweaters. I love her designs, I think she is a very classy knitter and she has a few men's sweaters that are great. Love your podcast and Happy Knitting!!
I'm looking at Single Malt by Maxim Cyr or the Anker Sweater for Him as my options for my husband. The first is classic with fabulous details. The second seems to give all guys great shoulders.
I made Guston by Ann budd for my husband he loves it. I also made the Esquire sweater by Jill wright. Another great design for men
I finished Sir Lancelot for my husband this month. He's also tall with a long torso. I had to modify some things, but it turned out great!

Just finishing a Timberline. It took about a month and I did in La Bien Aimee Corrie Worsted. Once you get the cable design it knits up quite easily. Started with the sleeves so I got the hang of the pattern. So thrilled with the final result. It really is an heirloom piece.

I finished a sweater for my hubby. I did the Single Malt by Maxim Cyr. My hubby doesn't like a baggy raglan and this hit my boxes and he loves it. He seems a similar shape to your hubby. He's tall and lean.

Great ideas! I’ve knit a Saven - intended for myself and it was really off, so I asked my husband to try it on and it fit like a glove. He wears it constantly! And now I’m knitting him Svenson by Jared Flood. One more this winter for him but pattern is TBD - probably not cabled since the first two are.

A couple of comments for men’s fit: always measure for the shoulders (same as woman’s wear), you can always change anything on the form other than the shoulders. To get the best fit for a sweater, find their favorite sweater and use it as a model for the new sweater. Also, take note of the wardrobe they wear to determine the style they would wear. (If the wardrobe is solid colors, then a solid color is what they would prefer.).
Jarrod Flood's Redford is an incredible piece. It is seamed, but checks off all your boxes. I made it for my slim 26 year old son and he has had nothing but compliments for years. Consider it! You won't regret it.

I would love to find some decent crochet patterns especially for myself, and maybe a nice button down smokers jacket.
I recently saw someone here on YT with a bunch of crochet sweaters and jackets round up, most were free patterns. I think I saved it, if I did and can find it I will come back and share the link with you. Not all the video patterns were in English but if you are at least an intermediate beginner or stronger, you can follow along easily and just write the stitches down per row.
