It is so true what you were saying about not needing 1000bhp to have fun. Since we started going out on track we've had several occasions in our Mini Cooper and Cooper S where we are faster round a lap than some fire breathing monster that does 4745mph on the straights but is completely useless when the track changes direction. It is 100% more fun being able to go flat out over a whole lap rather than full throttle for 8 seconds then waiting for the next straight to do it again.

You can also get a cars rear end to slip by shifting down without hitting any other pedals besides the clutch. I only do this after I heel toe in for the entrance and then I shift down while holding the clutch in to step the cars rear end out. This has allowed me to slide the car through the corner at high speeds. The AE86 is definitely the perfect car for learning your own technique which is what I did.

Back in the last part of the 90s a guy i knew had a completely stock AE86, in a blue close to the last one that followed you. I absolutely loved that car. How it behaved in corners, how the engine sounds, how you're sat in the car, the looks. In the real world I started my car handling journey with an AE86 Corolla GT Coupe. Taught me everything I needed about car control, and respecting limits. So playful, do much fun. Today's cars don't allow people to learn about how cars react to inputs unless in the virtual world, and believe me losing the rear end at 70mph and controlling it with a car in the adjacent lane teaches a whole new level of understanding and respect.
I have sold my ae86 6 months ago after owning 15 years. It is great to learn car control. Now i have a gt86 or frs or 86 and you can do the same thing with the new confort features. A great car.
been playing controller my whole life, i only started using a steering wheel a couple of months ago. the slap of reality where i couldn't even drive anything above 300hp in a straight line was so infuriating. but when it puts me in a situation where i have to start learning the absolute basics with low hp cars (i use a honda s800. mad little cars, love it!) i have to say it sparked an even more intense desire to keep playing, keep practicing, keep learning how to feel the car through a steering wheel. first time i got podium in a 30 lap tsukuba race was more rewarding than anything else i've ever done. makes me super happy that all those hours spent learning the car actually gives me actual visible progress. i'll be moving myself to the mx5 cup cars this week, which will hopefully be a good bump in difficulty. super excited!
1:30 i know it doesn't look like it, but those VHS clips you posted are pretty heavily modified ae86s for the time. suspensions setups is what everyone put their money into, low HP, but very stiff suspension, even if the height was too high.
I love these Touge style videos. In GT5 my favourite thing to do was generate the longest, wiggliest course I could and lap it in lightly tuned turds. Hardmode was keeping it in the "correct" lane for RHD/LHD cars.
As an AE86 track-driving owner, and simracer (and a bit of dev too) since GPL days (1998!), I salute you for this vid, J! Understanding vehicle dynamics or the fun (and thrill) of driving isn't about the numbers and absolute performance, but about the experience you can enjoy and thrive on as a driver.
Akina is my absolute fave it's somewhere in an intermediate level imo. it's got sharp hairpins, chicanes, fast turns, and straightaways which makes it fun to race on.
Holy hell, the exterior camera shot at 9:09... It's straight out of the manga/anime! I didn't think anyone could actually make that happen, that's amazing!
i have a 5:10 in the stock 86 down akina, listening to you explain all techniques like shifting to 1st to shift weight and rotate car makes me think, when driving you never really think what you are doing through and you just kind of do it, like second nature i guess lol
Slower cars and a circuit sized to match will always be more fun to race with other people than super fast race cars! I used to do a lot of R/C racing where typically everything is crazy fast and crazy high grip. The most fun I had was finding a group where we deliberately ran slower cars and less grip on a track sized right for it. We did that for years and it never got boring.
I just love how late you can brake in the 86. You and a car with much more horsepower can go into a turn at the same speed and angle but the magic of the 86's NA engine will allow you to feather the brake and slow down much later than the 350-400 HP beasts that are commonly associated with touge racing. Such an amazing little machine.
Glad your back with the togue Jimmer. I just commented on one of you latest video about this, and now you've done it. Great content, keep up the good work. Cheers!
and this is why, in iracing, the mustang fr500s is my current favorite car to drive. Good for learning momentum driving, weight transfer, brake and throttle effects on turning, and throttle control. It is a car that really lets you feel how a car responds to your driving, and has just enough power that you cant plant it anywhere and be fine (though you can still be kinda lead footed). It's, easy to get it sideways and control it during the slide, and feels extremely to feel the improvements to your driving as you increase pace. It's really fun to drive no matter what

I've been saying this for decades. The most fun you can have in a car is being close to its limit. As you said, having a car that is on a knife-edge is really hard and perhaps not as satisfying. And going a million kilometers per hours is probably going to end badly, especially in the real world. Driving cars like these have a wider gap between going close to the limit and going over it. In a sense they're easier, but also so much more satisfying, and at safer and legal speeds to boot.

"You don't need 1000BHP to have fun" Thank you, finally someone gets it, I've gotten crap for having a 3 valve with only a cold air intake power wise, but the suspension bushings were done for when I got it so all the money is in the suspension, 300HP in a planted car is some of the most fun I've had
I can confirm. I used to race these normal street cars in SIM racing more often in my life than GT cars. Recently I got more into GT7 and I am still having a bit of touble with the GT cars sometimes/my opponents are way quicker. Once there is some Race with normal road cars I usually always gain a podium and getting way better qualifying times than most of the people in the lobbies.
I remember when i played NFS world i enjoyed the events with the slowest cars class the most. I used to play the slowest car from the slowest class but the strength of it was carrying speed through the corners and even though everyone passed me on the straights I would always gain back the position in and after the corner.
I just tried Touge for the first time with a car like this, with the Toyota AE86 and it was exactly what I needed, I got pretty much bored from high horsepower cars so this is the perfect solution
hey jimmer.. i started sim racing because of ur videos like 3 years ago. sadly a year ago a had to sell my g29 to a friend of mine to pay off rent and food for my workers during the big rona pandemic. i actually cried while making decision to sell that wheel. but watching ur videos, seeing u from ur cabin to a decent house makes me wanna really save up money to buy a new wheel, might be a t300rs. progress kinda slow with me havin a kid recently, anyway wish me luck.
Bought my first wheel, second day of using it and got a 5:41 in the nismo Nisan, I for sure have more pace, gonna aim for a 5:30 by the end of the week
It just kinda reminds of how I never really had more fun in iRacing than when I was racing the slowest cars. There's just a lot more forgiveness, so you don't spend every lap on tinderhooks, waiting for your line to be a millimeter off so you end up turning left into a righthander and ending your race...
You gotta come find the BeamNG Togue players that do these exact runs competitively in BeamMP on BeamNG Standard tires, it's a incredible time, especially when the cars are setup well and everyone in the server can actually drive. Last thing I was doing was period correct shit tire rallying in BeamNG, was a very good time.
Here in the Nordic countries, the Volvo 240 is the car that can teach you how to drive like you talk about the AE86, if there is a naturally aspirated street version in the game, you should give it a go, though... generally games will have the 242 Turbo, or the Group A race car, rather than an old 244 or 245.
This was the car I used to learn the Nordschleife in Assetto Corsa, I never used to understand the love for it beyond obvious Initial D references but if the real thing is even half as fun as the AC version I can totally get the appeal now.
That black Skyline got stuck behind the world's widest AE86. I know what you mean about the super-advanced, super-powerful, super-downforce-y cars with super-sticky tires and traction control/anti-lock brakes. It gets boring driving them. It's like playing a game with a big cheat code or in god mode--it feels like cheating and isn't as rewarding. You get to where you have more fun driving a '65 GT350 or a MkI or MkII GT40 on the 'Ring or Bathurst or un-chicaned Le Mans. Just row the gears, heel-and-toe, steer with the throttle, 4-wheel drift, all the old-school driving techniques. It _means_ more to eke out a great lap in one of those old-school cars where you have to _earn_ it, where the car doesn't do most of it for you.
If you were practicing with a stock ae86 thinking about initial D.... well... that ae86 was tuned (suspension etc ) by bunta, maybe not exactly fully stock, setting wise
This would be the perfect thing for me to get, now that i've got a h-patten shifter for my set up. Excellent vidja Jammer and excellent editing Editor-chan

I remember when i played NFS world i enjoyed the events with the slowest cars class the most. I used to play the slowest car from the slowest class but the strength of it was carrying speed through the corners and even though everyone passed me on the straights I would always gain back the position in and after the corner.
This is why I always loved throwing Mini Coopers around rally stages in, well, every rally game ever. Less power = more power!
Im loving the content and the editing! Thx Jimmer and "The Editor" haha
I just tried Touge for the first time with a car like this, with the Toyota AE86 and it was exactly what I needed, I got pretty much bored from high horsepower cars so this is the perfect solution
couldn't agree more on your sentiment around these cars vs. GT3+ types. GT4 cars are still pretty fun for the same reason.
Thank you Jimmy so refreshing and i even learn something...no more stuck in gt3 , now having fun , thanks
hey jimmer.. i started sim racing because of ur videos like 3 years ago. sadly a year ago a had to sell my g29 to a friend of mine to pay off rent and food for my workers during the big rona pandemic. i actually cried while making decision to sell that wheel. but watching ur videos, seeing u from ur cabin to a decent house makes me wanna really save up money to buy a new wheel, might be a t300rs. progress kinda slow with me havin a kid recently, anyway wish me luck.
best of luck for you my friend! life's hard, but after storm there's sunshine
10:39 2 stock AE-86 same cars, same tyres.
OUR BATTLE WILL BE LEGENDARY!
I've been doing touge routes in a little Daihatsu Mira and it's so much fun!
Shoutout to editor chan, great editing!

Glad you enjoy touge racing! This EXACTLY is the reason why I bought my sim rig. To fulfill my childhood weeb initial D dream 😂
I literally started a series in this car today on Forza... such a fun car to drive. I have it at 125kw currently
You gotta come find the BeamNG Togue players that do these exact runs competitively in BeamMP on BeamNG Standard tires, it's a incredible time, especially when the cars are setup well and everyone in the server can actually drive. Last thing I was doing was period correct shit tire rallying in BeamNG, was a very good time.
the nosie of the 86 is like love to my ear i love that car with all my heart
agreed I love driving older lower powers cars in sim racing instead of supercar tier stuff like GT3 and LMP stuff.
Bro says hes gonna torture us but, your better than me on controller and ive been playing for almost 5 years, keep it up dude :D
Shitboxes are the best! I'm on my 3rd mx5 and there is nothing more rewarding than trouncing real cars in the twisties.
1:05 Love you too, jimmer.
That's why I like running old cars, there's so much character when you don't have all the down force and all the power.
This was the car I used to learn the Nordschleife in Assetto Corsa, I never used to understand the love for it beyond obvious Initial D references but if the real thing is even half as fun as the AC version I can totally get the appeal now.
It is as much fun in real life. I hav just sold it 6 months ago for a gt86 that is as much fun with stock tyres as a AE86.

Respect for keeping that black 34 damn. Wish i could drive like this.
That's why i love riding my Honda Grom so much more than any other bike ive ridden. 9hp is a hoot to push to its limit.
280bhp 6min33s Nordschliefe. Bloody love it. Slow with massive aero too. 😂 That's my detuned Radical RXC. Rad vid dude. ❤
nice to see the touge again, gave you a follow for that reason back in the days
PSA: do not use 1st gear in this car on Akina, you can easily take the hairpins at 50kph which exceeds what 1st gear is capable of.
Thank you Jimmy, amazing content! Inspiring
Jimmer, there's a port of this track for BeamNG... you know what to do!
Initial D
Oh man, I gotta hop back on this track. I used to run sub 4:30 on the kunos Tuned 86... good times
the record is 4:35...
literal perfect timing jimmer. i started rewatching initial d again only yesterday!
Can't wait to watch the AE86 IRL vid then. Supra, GTR, AE86, Miata...
You're really getting that dream JDM garage.
I love that car and track combo. Generally I prefer to run the tuned verison of the ae86 but the stock one is also very fun.
13:28 bro quoted bunta without meaning too. that's wise.
Love your work Jiimadore, keep this content up!
New Jimmer post LETS GOOOO!!!!!
Yoooo he even got the Chevy Chevette in the beginning of the video, i loved it, it is my first car!
fun fact: at 4:54, that's the "NANI???!!! KANSEI DORIFTO???!!" corner
Jimmy we need more of this game
The old saying "More fun to drive a slow car fast then a fast car slow" is 100% true.
Funny, I often do a few runs of the Akina downhill in the TU server, and more often than not in an r34. Not saying I was the one racing Jimmy, but there's a non-zero chance that it was me in that black r34.
Personally i love playing beamng with underpowered cars with good handling and low weight, it feels so good when you carry heaps of momentum through the corners and manage to beat times that cars with double or triple the amount of horsepower get on the same course.
Thanks Jimmy for do y thing, love it, always!
