    As i'd forgotten to mention it in the video, after attaching to the catapult shuttle, and the hold back bar has been installed (not shown in dcs) You raise the Launch bar switch, this does not actually raise the launch bar, it's held down. Pilots do this so they dont have to press the switch later after taking off, reducing workload. This way the bar automatically returns to the up position as it leaves the catapult, ready for the gear to be raised.

    • @J0J0Z
      @J0J0Z 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I remember reading in the NATOPS that the pilots raise the launch bar switch in high position because if they left it in the low position it can cause a hydraulic failure (sure for the F/A/18E not for the C i'll check it)

      I seem to recall the hornet having a load of gear related problems including lubrication issues if you do flared landings with it.

      how do you operate the Landing Officer camera? I know you press Alt F9 to go to it but then I seem to have no control and it's just looking up at the sky

    • @RedKiteRender
      @RedKiteRender  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The camera does look at the sky, its static, zoom it out with R ctrl / or * to see the deck. Trackir tracks and allows free look, which would be unrealistic which is why i'd recommend pausing it whilst using the view.

      @@RedKiteRender legacy Hornets had the issue about 6 or 7 years ago. Lowering the launch bar would blow the slipper seal. They raise it so at the end of the car stroke it pops up.
      Flaps go to half for launch and recovery. I've never seen them use full flaps for anything except shutdown. 16 degrees trim on deck, 12 on shore.

    Just stumbled on this video, don't know much about your community. I used to fly S-3 Vikings (the unfortunate target of the Hornet collision in this video). It's great to see the attention to detail here and the NATOPS comment references are blowing my mind a little - you just don't run into that outside of Naval Aviation circles. Nice job discussing some of the do's and don'ts flying around the boat, they are for the most part right on target. There seems to be a general theme of favoring real-world complexity over "dumbing things down" for the masses, which is refreshing.
    To really ratchet up the realism, this would also have the affects of sea state (and the fresnel landing system's difficulty keeping up with stabilization rate corrections in certain conditions), and the Rooster Tail / Burble area of changing air behind the ship. The burble severity changes all the time, but tends to be more pronounced when the ship is having to "make its own wind" on calm days. The experienced pilots know that when they are overhead in a Case I recovery and see a big wake behind the ship, that there will probably be a more pronounced burble. These are some of the reasons why landing aboard in real life is way, way more challenging than in a simulator. We would practice simulator landings before deploying, but mostly to work on our night landing instrument scan and practice carrier-based procedures - all the things you need to get set up to land. The simulator landing itself was a joke - way too complex to simulate, and we just gamed the system since that part was so unrealistic. The actual ball-flying to land part we practice in actual aircraft on a regular runway with a meatball, small lit carrier box, and LSOs. But we had old sims with outdated technology . . .
    Can this simulator also replicate night landings, complete with the Bullseye / Needles precision approach systems? Combine that with gnarly weather (visibility down to minimum), pitching deck, and aircraft emergencies (engine failure, stuck flaps, etc), and you'll have a pretty good representation of carrier ops at their best. There's a reason why the USA is the only country that conducts carrier flight ops under those conditions - because we decided to invest in that level of training and accept the risks that come with it - it's really, really difficult! There were some nights where I honestly could not believe we were walking to our jets and had not been canceled. I think all of us flying on those kind of nights would be looking at the tower and waiting to get canceled thinking "Ok, we're ACTUALLY walking to the planes. Ok, we're starting up now, I"m actually spinning engines. Wow, you are actually taking the chocks and chains off, now we're taxiing, I can't believe it. So you're putting me in front of the cat, wow, unfolding wings, I think we are really going. Now I'm in tension, REALLY not like what I'm seeing at the end of that deck, can't believe we're doing this and HERE WE GO". And that's the easy part - you're not looking forward to what's coming 1.5 hours later. Still makes me shiver a little.
    I'll check out some of the other videos, especially the Case 1 recovery tutorial. I'm impressed with what I've seen so far, and obviously a biased, huge fan of carrier aviation. I constantly shake my head that we manage to pull this off so regularly, and it was a truly amazing thing to be part of.
    Fly safe!

      Thanks! Yes, DCS (digital combat simulator) does in fact simulate pitching decks Case 1,2 and 3 landings with a weather, sea state, fog and time of day, including the carrier ils and tacan systems. Burble is not simulated yet to the best of my knowledge. The developers are creating a high fidelity and close as possible to reality sim covering all aspects of the aircraft that's declassified.
      This includes flight time in their simulation with real hornet pilots, so far it seems they've done an excellent job re-creating the hornet. There are some quirks of the simulation, but they're actively being worked on. It's pretty safe to say DCS is the most realistic flight simulation of combat aircraft available to the public. Damage simulation and failures are a part of dcs, though they're more often inflicted by battle damage, the sim does feature the ability to add system failures at random or specific ones for practice.
      Almost everyone involved in DCS is very much into re-creating real world procedures right down to even the comms. You'l even find some virtual squadrons dedicated to just that. It's a community of flight fans, people who love aviation and often missed the chance to do it in reality.
      Learning the DCS Hornet and doing case 1 recoveries myself it's astounding how precise and refined this all is, getting aircraft down so quickly, reliably and safely even in insane conditions. I've done a few case 3s with a VR headset and felt vertigo, disorientation, forced myself to rely on instruments and the meatball and still found it stressful. Even caught myself adding power for fear of hitting the deck too soon (even though i was on the ball, my eyes were misleading me) And I'm just sat in a comfy chair at home!
      Like you've said it's insanity that modern carrier operations run so smoothly, I've got serious respect for the skill and everyone involved keeping the whole show on the road, even more so after i'd gotten involved with this simulation!
      Take care!

    • @stratoleft

      What sort of "realism" do you wanna discuss. I don't care what your burble navy experiences are. Landing an F-4J on a carrier, and whatever it is that you fly, or have flown, are as different as night and day. The F-4 isn't as nearly as generous as far as last second roll and yaw adjustments as the F/A-18, not to mention if you come in heavy with fuel, which I strongly suggest you don't in the U.S.S. America, F-4J, which I have. Furthermore, ace, I don't care what you flew in the navy or what adjustments you have to account for. I trust me to land the beautiful classic Corsair on a carrier than you, or anyone you know. That's yet another experience COMPLETLY DIFFERENT than any other carrier approach and landing. I could certainly include ALL tail draggers in that scenario. Again, I would trust me to do it than any navy piolt you know, ace. How much do you wanna bet?

      @@stratoleft I bet you would crash into the back of the ship on your first approach. If you are that big of an asshole, you will never be let in a squadron, never less fly a plane. If you think a simulator landing is anything close to the real thing you are dead wrong.

    I have to say F/A-18 is a great step up from the Su33 in FC2 after trying it out a few times. The avionics make the landing much, much, much easier to control and safer, they did a great job simulating that.
    Now I'm surprised the simple radio guidance landing control of Su33 ever works.
    Honestly the very hard Su33 carrier landing qualifier still gives me chills.

    Jet Mech 319th BW GF AFB 65-69. Much appreciated. Loved being in that close to them on full-scale ORIT launches, or DEFCON launch. Not so fun in the middle of blizzards, but we got the job done, even if it meant a last minute engine swap with frozen (or burned from propane heaters) hands. I was also specialist on the AGM 28 Hound Dog missiles carried underwing, same engine as SR-71, more or less. A refueling mistake took out the fuel truck, the missile and the test cell, one day, with three separate explosions. That was a field and track event no one will forget.

    Just one thing that I noticed.
    I do not get Reheat Thrust when on the carrier by just advancing my throttles to max. I have to use the keyboard commands for Finger Lift. On the runway, this is not required and I believe on the current release the sim does not model the 32 lb force that in real life the pilot can exert without using the Finger Lifts to get into reheat.

A couple of things I noticed that got me curious, was that #1 you didn't change the hook mode from Field to Carrier, and #2 something that I'm struggling with but have just learned to TCN with the Stennis, is the correct altitude to commence a descent from and distance from the boat (ie. 2nm etc.). Because it seems possible to drop out of the sky on-speed and be way off a sensible glideslope.

    @redkite the launch bar is what pulls the aircraft to launch. You do not want to raise it before launching.
    I understand that this has no effect in game, but for realism sake, don't raise it. In real life, it wouldn't even be possible as the launch bar would be locked into the shuttle. It automatically raises and moves the switch position when you raise your gear.

    • @RedKiteRender
      @RedKiteRender  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's part of the real take off procedure. Once attached The launch bar will remain held down by the shuttle, along with the hold back bar installed behind the gear (not shown in dcs) they raise the switch before take off so it doesn't need to be pressed after take off. reducing pilot work load. Technically at the moment you don't even need to lower the launch bar. I'd rather teach people the correct method in case it changes in an update later.

    Does DCS incorporate cross winds??
    If so it would create a greater level of difficulty and therefore more realism and fun.

    • @RedKiteRender
      @RedKiteRender  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      DCS has simualtion of wind and turbulence, though carriers sail into the wind deliberately during take off and landings. This means you'l never land on a carrier with a significant crosswind. Runways however are another matter :)

    I think you should correct a little bit about throttle on launch you have to lift those finger slats to get full burner otherwise you cannot get full AB;)

    • @RedKiteRender
      @RedKiteRender  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct, however from what I've heard from pilots the finger lifts are not required in real life to reach burner, it's either something odd with the way it's simulated or a 'bug' and i expect it to change.

    Isn't it flaps to HALF for take off? Nice video!

    • @speedbird8326
      @speedbird8326 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      From NATOPS manual........8.2.5 Before Catapult Hook-Up. Before taxi onto the catapult, complete the takeoff checklist, set the
      standby attitude reference indicator for use if the HUD fails during the launch. With flaps HALF or
      FULL, the takeoff trim button should be pressed until the TRIM advisory appears and then the
      horizontal stabilator trim should be manually positioned for CG location, excess end airspeed and
      power setting for launch.

    • @1CAG
      @1CAG 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, I see. So it is either HALF or FULL for the carrier launch. Thanks for your feedback!

    Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I thought AOA is the angle between your wings and the airflow not the angle between your wings and the direction of travel.

    • @RedKiteRender
      @RedKiteRender  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is, but generally speaking your direction of travel is the same as the airflow, i'm generalising for sake of simplicity.

    using throttle to change altitude sounds counterintuitive to me but then ive never flown an F/A18 or similar, especially not on a carrier approach

    • @RedKiteRender
      @RedKiteRender  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Land base aircraft also adhere to this technique, although they perform a flare before touchdown. its to insure you land with the correct configuration for you wheels / hook to avoid tail strikes. if you pitch the nose up and down you'l change altitude but also change the angle you're hitting the deck, in the case of the hornet that could mean the hook missing (nose down) or getting smashed off against the deck (nose high)

    • @nuraalek8296
      @nuraalek8296 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Won't full flaps induce too much drag though? Would you not be fighting the drag as you come off the carrier, surely a point in a flight where you really don't want that! (I haven't tried the module yet so not speaking from any experience, just wondering).

    • @RedKiteRender
      @RedKiteRender  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The catapult should get you up to flying speed by the time you reach the end. You dont need to accelerate yourself like the Su-33 does to stay airborne.

      Keep an eye out for the 'Raven One' campaign (based on the book series) which will be providing some of that! Due out some time late this year.
      DCS at it's core is a simulator, but there are campaigns available which add in narrative and storytelling. Sadly cutscenes beyond what's doable inside the DCS mission itself are not (presently) possible.

    • @RedKiteRender
      @RedKiteRender  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'l agree it's complicated, but much like say dark souls, where learning is a very large part of the gameplay, it's very satisfying when things start falling into place. There's a great sense of achievement and very rewarding combat / multiplayer action as you get better. Naturally i can understand it's a bit of a barrier and not everyone's got the time to learn, but it's honestly one of the most fulfilling games i play.
