@@fjord. It's not a feature that may be implemented. At low speed high angle of attack conditions (like takeoffs) if you have an engine failure, the offset thrust from the other engine can cause the aircraft to yaw so hard into the failed engine, that you may not be able to counter it even with full rudder and stick authority. If that happens the aircraft departs controlled flight and you would't have the altitude necessary to regain control. This is why it was prohibbited irl to take off with AB. And the flight model and the engines are simulated to a high degree, so it is also a possibility in DCS.
@@fjord. Glad to help! The worst case scenario is if you get a sudden engine failure at rotation/or after the cat shot. The situation can be even worse if, for some reason, the ATLS(Asymmetric Thrust Limiting System) fails as well(red guarded switch on the left side console). This system would normally reduce thrust to minimum AB until both engine's ABs are lit. However if it fails(or you manually disable it), you would have full AB thrust on the remaining engine which would cause tremendous yaw.

Nope, the F-14A required Afterburner for takeoff. When the tomcat finally got the GE engines, afterburner was no longer required for takeoff. The legacy Hornet requires it, not sure if the Super Hornet needs burner for takeoff or not though.

What settings have you put in to get these weather conditions? for me it seems like i need to put it on thunderstorm to get these conditions, but then i have a cloud layer thats thicker than my bowl of oathmeal. Do you perhaps have a screenshot or quickguide?
I thought the f-14b wasn't supposed to use afterburners to take off because if you lost an engine the yaw would be too much.. and they didn't need them.
They sure would, canopy open and canopy closed as soon as belted in... no issues. The joke used to be "all weather aircraft, fair weather pilots", direct salt water immersion from a rogue wave could do some damage though.
It's no issue if the cockpit gets wet. Most electronics are tucked away so unless it was high mineral water or salt water, there isn't room for issues, even if it does somehow reach the electronics. It's like opening the sunroof in your car while it's raining. It might get the seat and stuff wet but it's not really gonna do damage.

Sorry a newbie here but shouldn't the cockpit should be filled with water? Considering the open cockpit and heavy rain? Does plane cockpit filled water ever happened in real life?
In real life, pilots would open and close the canopy very quickly in rainy conditions. Of course this doesn't matter in DCS, but these situations do occur.
We do have special gifts or tools of the trade that go along with degree. Exampe- an artist that paints- when they are cleared to relase work in gods kingdom, they are gifted a stunning set of paint brushes. We do have special tools of the trade.
How did you start? Did you start flying on civil aviation and after learning the basics of flight you moved to DCS? If so, how many flight hours did you accumulate before deciding to be DCS ready?
You can start on DCS now... you don't have to have basics of flight from a civil aviation sim. It's very beginner friendly with plenty of in-game tutorials.
I started off with general and civil aviation in x-plane, I also tried some military aircraft (although the addons aren't great). The way I got into DCS was using the free trials and ended up really enjoying it.

@@OutlawOneOneSummit I downloaded it about 3 weeks ago. I got the Apache, the Viper and the Hornet. Damn. Talk about a helluva learning curve. It's taken this long just to get my controllers set up and bound to the right commands. And the editor itself is crazy. But that's what makes it so good. Anything that you have to peel back layers is going to keep you enthralled for years. Somethings you peel back the first layer and there it is. Nothing left to learn.

heard a story from one of the all time great tomcat drivers, he said he was landing in seas so rough, the propeller would come out of the water when the boat crested. Roughly 20 foot swells.
The deck crew would really benefit from a better animation, unique per aircraft. It really isn't so difficult to just offer those deck crew animation files and all for module creator to allow them place them proper positions and timings per their aircraft, if ED can't do it by themselves. It is annoying to see the animation start and stop keyframes and then just idling so stupidly. The running and all could be smoothly be made as overall process.
What I also wish they’d do is add plane directors which would guide you to your assigned cat, instead of you taxiing at will to the JBD before getting guided.
@@simplyyellow6240 That's typically an issue with physics. It's difficult to simulate rolling resistance without also triggering collision the way that most game / physics engines are done. In the air, physics is typically pretty simple as if you hit anything while airborne.....you're kinda dead.

The F-14 is a wonderful module in terms of fidelity and presentation. It really exemplifies the generation crossover of aircraft from the analog to the digital age. It is still very much a pilots aircraft, no FBW and a simple early generation HUD. You can't throw it around the sky and expect an onboard computer to limit your ability to break it. It is multi role capable and it is great fun in single player and is even better with someone as your RIO. I wouldn't say it is hard to learn, not the basics to get you flying around, but it is very hard to master it's nuances of which there is a great many. The version you see displayed here is showcasing the Super-carrier module though which is a separate purchase (also currently on sale I believe). In the base F-14 module you will be launching from more basic carriers and carrier features - still amazing fun though,
@@nigelp5054 I’ve for sure done my research on what the full module includes, I believe it is quite ironic how in the real world pilots try to get more and more modern planes but in our sim atmosphere it is always more fun to work backwards into more rugged aircraft, I think I’m definitely going to get it after I’ve done a bit more research, the carrier is in my budget but I personally don’t see the point in getting it while only learning the f14, I’d be in my best interest to practice on the ground first in take offs and landings, I know that carrier landing is a much harder scape, back in my f18 days it was hard then and I had flight assists and my flight computer constantly active, I can only imagine what kind of skill I would need to be active as a navy pilot thanks for the insight I appreciate it 👍

You can press alt + c on your keyboard to switch between mouse camera and mouse interaction and hold down the scroll button to pan the camera! Hope that helps

이거 보면 캐터펄트 일명 사출기가 얼마나 효율적인 물건인줄 알게 된다 5톤에서10톤 되는 전투기를 속도0에서 200까지 대략 200미터갑판을 달려 끌어당겨 집어던져주는 어머어마하게 큰새총인데 갑판위에는 사람 발등만한 갈고리가 외관상 보이는게 끝이고 갑판밑에 시내버스20대정도의 길이와 맞먹는 엄청난 크기의 유압실린더와 장치는 실제로 갑판밑에 캐터펄트 본체가 숨어있다 대부분 잘 모르는 어린친구들은 캐터펄트가 뭔지도 모른다 밀덕들은 캐터펄트 크기조차 대충 가늠하겠지만 극비기술이며 일반인에게는 공개도 안하고 엄청나게 크다는것정도만 알고 있을것이다 하지만 항모에서 캐터펄트는 기관실 엔진만큼 부피가 크고 어마어마하게 무겁고 중요한 장비라는걸 알고난 후부터는 뭐거의 항모라는 개념은 이착함장치가 둘다 달려있는 건 항공모함이고 없는건 강습상륙함이라고 정의할수 있다 아메리카함이나 오타와급이나 와스프급은 이 캐터펄트가 없다 그래서 이륙을 항공기자체 추력으로 해결해야 하는데 그래서 이륙중량이 캐터펄트에서 발진하는 전투기의 이륙중량이 100이라고 했을때 50%에서 많아봤자 60%정도 나오는것이다 자동차로 따지면 1000키로갈수 있는 디젤유를 반밖에 못들고 날아 올라야 된다는 소리다 여기서 항공기 항속거리가 500키로라고 하면 연료를 더넣으면 배부르고 무거워서 이륙이 안되니깐 반밖에 못채우고 날아올라 250키로밖에 못간다는 소리다 거기다 이륙할때 어마어마한 추력을 얻기 위해서 엔진풀가동을 하면 순식간에 연료량전체에서 20%를 이륙할때 써버린다 결론은 항속거리가 200키로로 줄어드는것이다 이것이 결정적인 차이가 되며 결국 캐터펄트는 항공모함의 상징이자 존재이유이기도 하다

@@fjord. It's not a feature that may be implemented. At low speed high angle of attack conditions (like takeoffs) if you have an engine failure, the offset thrust from the other engine can cause the aircraft to yaw so hard into the failed engine, that you may not be able to counter it even with full rudder and stick authority. If that happens the aircraft departs controlled flight and you would't have the altitude necessary to regain control. This is why it was prohibbited irl to take off with AB. And the flight model and the engines are simulated to a high degree, so it is also a possibility in DCS.

@@fjord. Glad to help! The worst case scenario is if you get a sudden engine failure at rotation/or after the cat shot. The situation can be even worse if, for some reason, the ATLS(Asymmetric Thrust Limiting System) fails as well(red guarded switch on the left side console). This system would normally reduce thrust to minimum AB until both engine's ABs are lit. However if it fails(or you manually disable it), you would have full AB thrust on the remaining engine which would cause tremendous yaw.
Reasons why everyone takes off in full ab in the F14.

DCS looks so realistic it is crazy.
Always impressive to see how many nobs, switches and handles there are in old fighter jets. Modern day cockpits almost look empty in comparison.

But I thought there was a rule not to engage afterburner when on the deck, even during take off.
Nope, the F-14A required Afterburner for takeoff. When the tomcat finally got the GE engines, afterburner was no longer required for takeoff. The legacy Hornet requires it, not sure if the Super Hornet needs burner for takeoff or not though.
You need as much thrust as you can get.

They sure would, canopy open and canopy closed as soon as belted in... no issues. The joke used to be "all weather aircraft, fair weather pilots", direct salt water immersion from a rogue wave could do some damage though.
It's no issue if the cockpit gets wet. Most electronics are tucked away so unless it was high mineral water or salt water, there isn't room for issues, even if it does somehow reach the electronics. It's like opening the sunroof in your car while it's raining. It might get the seat and stuff wet but it's not really gonna do damage.

Sorry a newbie here but shouldn't the cockpit should be filled with water? Considering the open cockpit and heavy rain? Does plane cockpit filled water ever happened in real life?
In real life, pilots would open and close the canopy very quickly in rainy conditions. Of course this doesn't matter in DCS, but these situations do occur.
Can this be played with an Xbox controller? Because I don't have a joystick and not about to try using the keyboard. Looks very good otherwise though.

How did you start? Did you start flying on civil aviation and after learning the basics of flight you moved to DCS?
If so, how many flight hours did you accumulate before deciding to be DCS ready?
You can start on DCS now... you don't have to have basics of flight from a civil aviation sim. It's very beginner friendly with plenty of in-game tutorials.
I started off with general and civil aviation in x-plane, I also tried some military aircraft (although the addons aren't great). The way I got into DCS was using the free trials and ended up really enjoying it.

It's taken this long just to get my controllers set up and bound to the right commands. And the editor itself is crazy. But that's what makes it so good. Anything that you have to peel back layers is going to keep you enthralled for years. Somethings you peel back the first layer and there it is. Nothing left to learn.

The deck crew would really benefit from a better animation, unique per aircraft. It really isn't so difficult to just offer those deck crew animation files and all for module creator to allow them place them proper positions and timings per their aircraft, if ED can't do it by themselves.
It is annoying to see the animation start and stop keyframes and then just idling so stupidly. The running and all could be smoothly be made as overall process.
What I also wish they’d do is add plane directors which would guide you to your assigned cat, instead of you taxiing at will to the JBD before getting guided.

@@simplyyellow6240 That's typically an issue with physics. It's difficult to simulate rolling resistance without also triggering collision the way that most game / physics engines are done. In the air, physics is typically pretty simple as if you hit anything while airborne.....you're kinda dead.

One of my faves for sure. It's legendary, and especially now that they've been retired. Such a capable plane in its time.
@@SirMo There is a TH-cam video somewhere, explaining why they didn't just upgrade it, like they did the F-15, F-16 and even the F-4. Unfortunately I don't remember the reasons.

Yes, you should totally get it. Its perfect for you.
The F-14 is a wonderful module in terms of fidelity and presentation. It really exemplifies the generation crossover of aircraft from the analog to the digital age. It is still very much a pilots aircraft, no FBW and a simple early generation HUD. You can't throw it around the sky and expect an onboard computer to limit your ability to break it. It is multi role capable and it is great fun in single player and is even better with someone as your RIO.
I wouldn't say it is hard to learn, not the basics to get you flying around, but it is very hard to master it's nuances of which there is a great many.
The version you see displayed here is showcasing the Super-carrier module though which is a separate purchase (also currently on sale I believe). In the base F-14 module you will be launching from more basic carriers and carrier features - still amazing fun though,
@@nigelp5054 I’ve for sure done my research on what the full module includes, I believe it is quite ironic how in the real world pilots try to get more and more modern planes but in our sim atmosphere it is always more fun to work backwards into more rugged aircraft, I think I’m definitely going to get it after I’ve done a bit more research, the carrier is in my budget but I personally don’t see the point in getting it while only learning the f14, I’d be in my best interest to practice on the ground first in take offs and landings, I know that carrier landing is a much harder scape, back in my f18 days it was hard then and I had flight assists and my flight computer constantly active, I can only imagine what kind of skill I would need to be active as a navy pilot thanks for the insight I appreciate it 👍

You can press alt + c on your keyboard to switch between mouse camera and mouse interaction and hold down the scroll button to pan the camera! Hope that helps

이거 보면 캐터펄트 일명 사출기가 얼마나 효율적인 물건인줄 알게 된다
5톤에서10톤 되는 전투기를 속도0에서 200까지 대략 200미터갑판을 달려 끌어당겨 집어던져주는 어머어마하게 큰새총인데
갑판위에는 사람 발등만한 갈고리가 외관상 보이는게 끝이고 갑판밑에 시내버스20대정도의 길이와 맞먹는 엄청난 크기의 유압실린더와 장치는 실제로 갑판밑에 캐터펄트 본체가 숨어있다
대부분 잘 모르는 어린친구들은 캐터펄트가 뭔지도 모른다 밀덕들은 캐터펄트 크기조차 대충 가늠하겠지만 극비기술이며 일반인에게는 공개도 안하고 엄청나게 크다는것정도만 알고 있을것이다
하지만 항모에서 캐터펄트는 기관실 엔진만큼 부피가 크고 어마어마하게 무겁고 중요한 장비라는걸 알고난 후부터는 뭐거의 항모라는 개념은 이착함장치가 둘다 달려있는 건 항공모함이고 없는건 강습상륙함이라고 정의할수 있다
아메리카함이나 오타와급이나 와스프급은 이 캐터펄트가 없다 그래서 이륙을 항공기자체 추력으로 해결해야 하는데 그래서 이륙중량이
캐터펄트에서 발진하는 전투기의 이륙중량이 100이라고 했을때 50%에서 많아봤자 60%정도 나오는것이다
자동차로 따지면 1000키로갈수 있는 디젤유를 반밖에 못들고 날아 올라야 된다는 소리다 여기서 항공기 항속거리가 500키로라고 하면 연료를 더넣으면 배부르고 무거워서 이륙이 안되니깐 반밖에 못채우고 날아올라 250키로밖에 못간다는 소리다
거기다 이륙할때 어마어마한 추력을 얻기 위해서 엔진풀가동을 하면 순식간에 연료량전체에서 20%를 이륙할때 써버린다
결론은 항속거리가 200키로로 줄어드는것이다 이것이 결정적인 차이가 되며 결국 캐터펄트는 항공모함의 상징이자 존재이유이기도 하다
