    Hey guys, I hope new players find this kind of stuff helpful the objective here was not to make you an ace pilot after just watching this video. The objective here is to just make you competent and able to actually put up a fight. Also to Familiarize you guys with some basic concepts of air to air combat this is the kind of stuff I wish I had when I started playing DCS so I hope you guys find this helpful. Thanks for watching and I hope you at least find it entertaining.

      So when you fire the AIM-120 and then dive like that, how can the missile maintain it's lock. I though you had to hold the lock for a few seconds before the missile started tracking on it's own.

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      thats ideal for the missile but u dont have to. the missile can use its own radar, especially at that range. against a target in front of a blue sky, ur essentially forcing it pitbull before it would like, but it still works.

    And of course you must learn the missiles of each plane and their range so you can avoid them more easy. If it is the AIM-54 Phoenix well..."eject eject eject"

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      yes, learning all the ranges etc is the next step.

    • @katumus
      @katumus 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      AIM-54 has never in real life hit a fighter that is maneuvering. All the hits from Iranian AIM-54 against Mig-23 were fleeing away or didn't do anything. They were like flying bombers, non-maneuvering targets. And the two AIM-54 launches that USA did, failed (and they blame the deck grew mishandling the missiles) as they didn't find moving target.
      The AIM-54 is incapable to hit a maneuvering target because it can't turn as tightly as the maneuvering target can.
      The SPO-15 will tell you the missile range. All you need to do is to look at the SPO and it will give you the countdown when to perform the maneuvers, at what direction the missile is coming. And the SPO-15 in DCS is wrongly coded and made, having only very minor features it would have and those wrongly as well presented.
      As well the chaff, flares and maneuvers don't work correctly in DCS, so you are anyways underdog in many situations as you can't do things correctly.
      I often train against four F-15C maxed AI, all with two AIM-120C. I can avoid the first seven while still keep pushing forward, launch my missies and get 3-4 of them in defensive and kill them, the last one is the challenge, as typically they get close enough to launch their last AIM-120C and if I am not well positioned, I fly straight at it.

    • @GeFlixes
      @GeFlixes 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Jabbers, in his preview of the F-14, mentioned that the radar is very easily notched. Said the AIM-54 got effective at under 25 nm against AI.

    • @NeonMako
      @NeonMako 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@GeFlixes That's assuming the AI knows it's been launched though. F-14 has TWS, so the target won't get a warning unless the missile has already gone pitbull, which Jabbers himself said once the AIM-54 goes pitbull it's almost certainly gonna get the kill. Unless you know the range of the Tomcat, you can't notch it forever the second a "14" appears on your RWR, and if you are playing the Russian fighters, you will only know it's a fighter, not that it is specifically an F-14. On top of that, 25nmi is insane range for DCS. AMRAAMs in DCS have trouble beyond just 10nmi...

    @ 1:40, it may be too far to shoot to get a kill, but I tend to fire one off anyway, just so it's out there forcing the other guy defensive, and then wait until I have a flashing shoot and count about 5 seconds, then fire a second one, in that time the first one has forced them to take defensive measures which alone could cause them to lose their radar lock, and a lot of energy, and we've also closed range, I usually put them on my radar Az limit, and dive, so that I have a look up view for my radar, so the second one usually finds its mark.

  • @riman8493
    @riman8493 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Wonderful video with detailed explanations that make a ton of sense! Many thanks! Fantastic job!
    I have a simple question, though - I see that your go-to defensive manouver is usually to dive for the deck, the reasoning being that of dragging the missle into denser air; this makes sense, but at the same time, if the missile is being fired from higher altitude, that missile is also going to get help with its acceleration, because gravity is going to pull it towards you. Is the drag coefficient really so strong that it negates the added benefit of a downwards trajectory? I come from War Thunder (please don't snicker! =)) and my first instinct, when watching this, was to crave altitude and cling to it like a lifeline. My mind immediately thought to crank and climb at the same time. At the very least, crank horizontally and, after the missile's burn phase is over, climb to make it bleed speed far more rapidly than going downwards. I'm used to the guy with the higher ground holding all the cards and the ability to dictate the terms of the engagement, so it was very counter-intuitive for me to see the opposite happen here.
    I guess what I'm trying to say/ask is: gravity vs drag, drag matters more? Is this realistic and how it is in real life as well, or is it a quirk of the simulator?
    Many thanks and please keep up the brilliant work! I enjoy your videos greatly and learn a lot from them!

    • @Mickymauserius
      @Mickymauserius 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think when you go up, you have 2 factors against you: the thinner air for the missle, and the gravity which makes you slower.
      On the other hand, if you dive down, you just have the missles gravity against you. Every other factor (thicker air for the unpropelled missle, higher speed of your plane) is in favour of you.

    When you drag a missile down like that it also forces it to have to deal with ground clutter as well depending on the seeker of course. For radar guided missiles it also helps if you can make it harder for the seeker to do it's dirty work. Not sure if that is modeled in DCS but they probably modeled frog farts knowing how they roll :)

    Great tips and information too in order to defeat missiles I found it very well structured and full of the type of info that us beginners need but I bet new "pilots" "players" (what is the correct terminology?) need to learn a lot the hard way too. Some research into published tactical and strategic NATO and WARSAW PACT information may well be worthwhile all the same. Your video on the other hand gives us real data as it happens and we can watch the tactical replay also which is a fantastic tool. Thank you again and perhaps I may see you in the air.

      @@GrowlingSidewinder I got on public server for the first time last night and using mostly what I learned from you and other videos I was able to dodge dozens of Sidewinders and R-73s (the server was limited to fox 2s and guns). I ended up getting 13 kills total 10 with F-15 and 3 with Hornet and I got shot down 8 times. Watched the tacview after and saw I had mostly let folks get in behind me without me knowing maybe due to my lack if practice flying without labels and that I have to use a hat switch for my viewing. Need to get TrackIR or something like that but I thought it was a decent start. Tonight going to jump on a server with fox 1 and fox 3s and try my luck!

      Growling Sidewinder thanks I’ll have to get it ordered finally because those tags being off made me have to use Radar when I otherwise wouldn’t just to get a bearing to look. I did play single player only until I could consistently beat high and excellent skilled AI which so I waited about 3-4 months of me starting (and flying 2-6 or more hours a day) because I wanted to be half way confident and not ruin the experience for others. Going to do it all over again as soon as HB drops the F-14! Can’t friggin wait!

      same man its gonna be awesome, and ya my general advice to all new players is dont come online until u can easily kill the excellent AI. if you can't even easily kill the AI ur gonna get destroyed online in PvP and thats no fun for anyone. especially the new player cuz they'll get frustrated with being shot down every 2 mins

    The only disadvantage of RWR is, that we don't know how far away is the missile. Russian "Byeryoza" in MiG-29 and Su-27 has a radar signal strength indicator.

    Man, this is the first Video I'm watching and I slowly feel like I'm getting stuff. I'm a total newbie in DCS and flight Sims /airplanes in general- but I've always loved the idea of knowing how to fly an airplane so I decided to give it a go- it's been pretty difficult. But I'm really hoping that if I keep watching these Videos as well as playing everyday, I'll get much better.

    As always, perfect video ! I fly a lot on DCS and I'm still not really good in AA combat. The "assume a missile is coming to you" is something I don't do, combined to the fact that sometimes I loose situational awarness (think I'm not that close, or the ennemy is in front when it's not the case ...), I commit too much and die a lot.
    I think a lot of people over commit like me instead of breaking the fight, take some distance and re commit in a good situation.
    Another problem I currently have is that I'm flying on the BlueFlag or DDCS server a lot, and they don't have tacview which is a shame because you can learn so much. I'm ok to be shot down hundreds of time if I can have a feedback. I hope the dedicated server will allow these servers to put tacview again (some of them deactivated it because of resources consumption)

      @@GrowlingSidewinder That's my goal with a friend. I'm currently creating a mission (with the mist framework), to jump in an aircraft already in the air and engage each other with "simulation of the missiles" (you have information if a missile is coming to you, if it hits you, if you managed to dodge it...) without being killed (the missile disappear before hitting you). And we're gonna train with this.
      If interested, once this mission is ready, I can it give to anyone who wants it.

    First thing first: The altitude and the speed of your opponent are decisive factors that determine your behaviour. If the opponent has a substatial altitude advantage and/or a speed surplus then even if the nominal range of you missiles is somehow greater his missile can be launched from longer distance, earlier than yours that is. The second point I wanted to make is that in real world a duell between two single fighters is unlikely to happen. If you are compelled to break sideways to avoid the opponent's missile you do it before he launches it taking in consideration the respective altitudes and speed factors as well as the expected nominal range of the mightiest missile in your opponent's arsenal. In the team fight you induce your opponent to turn so as to have an optimal launch on you whereas the same time he is getting exposed for your wingman's attack while your wingman flies parallel to you, Of course the wingman of your opponent will certainly attack you wingman and so on. Skillful tactics or if you like the 'team spirit" are the essence of the air-combat.

    • @unipus
      @unipus 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm by no means a great or even good dogfighter, but what he meant by this is that when a missile is launched at you, you have no means of determining what it is. The only sensible thing a pilot can do is assume that the most dangerous possible weapon is headed their way, and act accordingly. In a fighter v fighter scenario, especially head-on, the first shot is usually not intended or expected to hit. It's to force your opponent to go defensive, retain the initiative, prevent them from effectively engaging YOU, and gain the advantage for a kill shot to follow.
      So he's suggesting intentionally firing a less capable missile, with no expectation that it will hit, in order to line up your opponent for a kill shot with a more capable weapon once they have committed to a reaction.

    Good video man, I will say though that first one that you said it's still too far to shoot might not be depending on what you are trying to do. I know we are talking about new players but getting the first shot off can be key in that situation if you are trying to do an offensive press. Plus, once all the radar modes are working and they don't immediately know you fired a 120 that can pretty easily become a kill shot if there is a high closure rate. I wouldn't mind actually talking tactics sometime.

    Currently trying the FC3 SU27 campaign , those AIM120 are hard to dupe when fired four at a time .I try and agro the first salvo so my wing can get a shot or two in .
    4 x F16bl52 v Me and wingman in su27 , they always get first launch and its tricky to get back on them before they get into AIM9 range . By then I am just in boresight optic mode using the ET if I have them .
    The ET seem to have way more energy at close to medium . I don't have head track so I use external cam to track enemies in dogfights , but yeah usually up against multiple and at least 1 of them always gets on my six . Missile six o'clock low , eject , eject , eject .

    When you turned to the point where you broke lock... didn't Frosty staying basically the same heading and speed, play into the strengths of the AIIM - 120? Flying basically to prediction, the missile had when launched, making it easy on it when it's systems go active to update terminal guidance?
