It's because packrats are not true rats. They are only distant cousins to Norwegian rats. In fact, packrats are more closely related to hamsters. Interestingly, both have hoarding behavior.

I love pack rats! They make me laugh. They make these giant nests and are oblivious to the fact that other woodland creatures are moving in with them. I saw one tidying up his lil' apartment complex, he was shocked to see a snail in the walkway. He picked it up and placed it outside 2x in the course of cleaning before he got angry at it and gave it a couple little bites to get him on his way.
They've been known to have frogs and other bizarre companions in their giant nests.

I recently started using pieces of suet blocks in Victor Quick Kill mousetraps in the garage, and I've been getting mice almost every night for weeks (I was rarely getting mice with just peanut butter). Maybe you could try this out and compare its effectiveness to other kinds of bait.

  • @EnraEnerato

So, I wonder if a version with twice the "pillar wires" would work better, as theat would mean the spacing between the spikes would be halfed? Then again, you could still have stragglers managing to acrobat their way out of the large hole in the middle of the spikes? But if the hole would be smaller it may not catch rats anymore?
