Rats, often underestimated and misunderstood, are incredibly intelligent, social, and affectionate creatures. Despite their reputation, rats are actually clean animals that groom themselves regularly. They are highly trainable and can learn tricks, respond to their names, and even use a litter box. Rats also possess a curious and playful nature, making them entertaining companions. These small rodents have a strong sense of companionship and thrive in pairs or small groups, enjoying human interaction as well. With their gentle and friendly demeanor, rats make excellent pets for both children and adults alike.

they’re actually omnivores, and while fruits, veggies, and pellets can cut it, they actually love cooked eggs! they can have a little bit of cheese too, it’s like cake to them in that it’s super tasty but too much will make them sick.
and sometimes my rats tried to nibble on me while “grooming” my fingers, but only ever really bit me if i was wearing gloves to clean their cage as they didn’t know my hands were under there.
They also make this grinding noise with their teeth called bruxing that means they’re happy! if they’re super happy and bruxing really hard, their eyes will boggle out, which can look a little concerning but doesn’t hurt them at all.

I’ve had pets my whole life up until now, being 37. They’re all in my heart, but he is the best pet I’ve ever had for multiple reasons
Fearless. Even when i vacuumed and had people over. VERY sociable. Even hung out with me when I would watch tv. Even had a little wine with me. Very calm cool and collective. And attacked a snake, which is how I found him in my friends snake cage. Made a deal with my friend to keep him if he’s alive before I leave, hence the name “Hercules”

A testament of how smart they are: I feed my rats a mix of hand Blended dry mix and peas. They love the peas so much because they're like junk food due to the sugar content. I've noticed that they've not been eating the dry mix, so today I put in the dry mix first so they have some time to just eat that, and then I'd add the peas later. Frankie just ate the dry mix with no issues, but my other rat, Ducky (he's a lil bit of a porker but I'm making some progress on his weight loss because he's old and old+fat isn't a great combo for rats) was another story. His fat ass was sticking his head in the bowl curling up into a ball and pretending to eat the dry mix. Afterwards he'd pop up and look at me like "om nom nom nom all gone, mommy. Now where are my fcking peas, bish!🤬"

Rats make amazing pets. I’ve had several through the years. Worst thing about them is they only live around 2 years. Females are susceptible to cancer. It would always break my heart that they’d leave us so soon. But they’re intelligent, so much fun, friendly, and will follow you around like puppies. And yes, they are sociable, so are always happiest with at least 1 rat buddy, but will still love their human companions.

@@shapeshiftingmedallion3974Eh, he's not 100% right. They have shorter lives mostly because of their nature as being prey animals. They're honestly the best pets, but in the wild, they live even shorter, usually less than a year. The issue is that predation has made natural selection unable to weed out genetic conditions, like: mycoplasma, hind leg degeneration, rampant amounts of cancer and tumors, bad vision, diabetes, kidney and heart disease, teeth malocclusion, and powerful allergies.

This is really important that I never see mentioned, NEVER KEEP YOUR RATS IN A CAGE WITH A WIRE MESH FLOOR FOR THEM TO WALK ON. This will lead to them contracting BUMBLE FOOT, and it's extremely painful and debilitating as well as incurable. I was sold rats from a pet store and the cage they recommend had a wire floor. A year or so later both my rats suddenly started hobbling around and could no longer run or jump. I found out what it was and was outraged that the pet store sold me this and doomed my rats to a life of pain. There was nothing I could do to help them besides try and make the rest of their life's as comfortable and pain free as I could. One of them died prematurely and then the other died of a broken heart I'm sure. I am still upset about this all these years later. Please inform any rat owners you know if they have their rats in any cage where primarily they have to walk on wire so they can get a new cage before it's too late.

Three more things to keep in mind:
    1. Rats have short lifespans, usually about 2 years or a bit more. They are prone to tumors near the end of their lives. You can factor in vet bills, and the losses will be heartbreaking. But they are indeed great pets, and once in a while you will encounter a particularly special companion you will especially cherish and never forget.
    2. Be very careful to avoid mixing sexes unless you want huge numbers of pups.
    3. Rats must constantly gnaw on things to keep their ever-growing teeth under control. They will not bite YOU, but charging cables, electrical wires, furniture, paper, textiles or anything else they can get to is fair game. If you let them roam, you must rat-proof the area and/or supervise.

      In case anyone is curious:
Rats are very notorious throughout human history as being INDIRECT vectors of transmission for Yersinia pestis, a.k.a. bubonic plague, a.k.a. Black Death, which killed quite a large number of people in the Middle Ages. They don't directly harbor the Yersinia bacteria that causes it: instead, rat fleas are the primary vector of transmission, and those fleas that live on the rats then become a threat of infection to humans when the human comes in contact with the flea-ridden rat.
Anyway, the difference between Yersinia infection in the Middle Ages and now is that now we have the means to easily treat infected people. It's just a problem in very undeveloped areas and when people don't know they have it. So yes, you can still contract bubonic plague, but no, it likely won't kill you -- IF you get medical attention in time.

Rats are various medium-sized, long-tailed rodents. Species of rats are found throughout the order Rodentia, but stereotypical rats are found in the genus Rattus. Other rat genera include Neotoma (pack rats), Bandicota (bandicoot rats) and Dipodomys (kangaroo rats).
Rats are typically distinguished from mice by their size. Usually the common name of a large muroid rodent will include the word "rat", while a smaller muroid's name will include "mouse". The common terms rat and mouse are not taxonomically specific. There are 56 known species of rats in the world.[1]
      Species and description
A rat in a suburb of Vancouver
Skeleton of a black rat (Rattus rattus) on display at the Museum of Osteology.
The best-known rat species are the black rat (Rattus rattus) and the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus). This group, generally known as the Old World rats or true rats, originated in Asia. Rats are bigger than most Old World mice, which are their relatives, but seldom weigh over 500 grams (17+1⁄2 oz) in the wild.[2]
The term rat is also used in the names of other small mammals that are not true rats. Examples include the North American pack rats (aka wood rats[3]) and a number of species loosely called kangaroo rats.[3] Rats such as the bandicoot rat (Bandicota bengalensis) are murine rodents related to true rats but are not members of the genus Rattus.[4][5]
Male rats are called bucks; unmated females, does, pregnant or parent females, dams; and infants, kittens or pups. A group of rats is referred to as a mischief.[6]
The common species are opportunistic survivors and often live with and near humans; therefore, they are known as commensals. They may cause substantial food losses, especially in developing countries.[7] However, the widely distributed and problematic commensal species of rats are a minority in this diverse genus. Many species of rats are island endemics, some of which have become endangered due to habitat loss or competition with the brown, black, or Polynesian rat.[8]
Wild rodents, including rats, can carry many different zoonotic pathogens, such as Leptospira, Toxoplasma gondii, and Campylobacter.[9] The Black Death is traditionally believed to have been caused by the microorganism Yersinia pestis, carried by the tropical rat flea (Xenopsylla cheopis), which preyed on black rats living in European cities during the epidemic outbreaks of the Middle Ages; these rats were used as transport hosts. Another zoonotic disease linked to the rat is foot-and-mouth disease.[10]
Rats become sexually mature at age 6 weeks, but reach social maturity at about 5 to 6 months of age. The average lifespan of rats varies by species, but many only live about a year due to predation.[11]
The black and brown rats diverged from other Old World rats in the forests of Asia during the beginning of the Pleistocene.[12]
      Rat tails
A closeup of a rat tail
The characteristic long tail of most rodents is a feature that has been extensively studied in various rat species models, which suggest three primary functions of this structure: thermoregulation,[13] minor proprioception, and a nocifensive-mediated degloving response.[14] Rodent tails-particularly in rat models-have been implicated with a thermoregulation function that follows from its anatomical construction. This particular tail morphology is evident across the family Muridae, in contrast to the bushier tails of Sciuridae, the squirrel family. The tail is hairless and thin skinned but highly vascularized, thus allowing for efficient countercurrent heat exchange with the environment. The high muscular and connective tissue densities of the tail, along with ample muscle attachment sites along its plentiful caudal vertebrae, facilitate specific proprioceptive senses to help orient the rodent in a three-dimensional environment.[15] Murids have evolved a unique defense mechanism termed degloving that allows for escape from predation through the loss of the outermost integumentary layer on the tail. However, this mechanism is associated with multiple pathologies that have been the subject of investigation.[citation needed]
Microscopic cross section of Rattus rattus tail, delineating tendon bundles, vasculature, and vertebral canal.
Multiple studies have explored the thermoregulatory capacity of rodent tails by subjecting test organisms to varying levels of physical activity and quantifying heat conduction via the animals' tails. One study demonstrated a significant disparity in heat dissipation from a rat's tail relative to its abdomen.[16] This observation was attributed to the higher proportion of vascularity in the tail, as well as its higher surface-area-to-volume ratio, which directly relates to heat's ability to dissipate via the skin. These findings were confirmed in a separate study analyzing the relationships of heat storage and mechanical efficiency in rodents that exercise in warm environments. In this study, the tail was a focal point in measuring heat accumulation and modulation.[citation needed]
On the other hand, the tail's ability to function as a proprioceptive sensor and modulator has also been investigated. As aforementioned, the tail demonstrates a high degree of muscularization and subsequent innervation that ostensibly collaborate in orienting the organism.[17] Specifically, this is accomplished by coordinated flexion and extension of tail muscles to produce slight shifts in the organism's center of mass, orientation, etc., which ultimately assists it with achieving a state of proprioceptive balance in its environment. Further mechanobiological investigations of the constituent tendons in the tail of the rat have identified multiple factors that influence how the organism navigates its environment with this structure. A particular example is that of a study in which the morphology of these tendons is explicated in detail.[18] Namely, cell viability tests of tendons of the rat's tail demonstrate a higher proportion of living fibroblasts that produce the collagen for these fibers. As in humans, these tendons contain a high density of golgi tendon organs that help the animal assess stretching of muscle in situ and adjust accordingly by relaying the information to higher cortical areas associated with balance, proprioception, and movement.[citation needed]

After crying many times because of their death, i simply started being fine with it, not because i don't care but because now i think that living 2~4 years is actually fine to them and even if it is too little, it's awesome that i can make their short lives so happy and out of worries.

Unrelated but I am struggling with human deaths and this makes me remember someone telling me
"Getting to exist is an exceedingly rare opportunity considering the scale of universe that is quite possibly lifeless, which then reminds me that we’re not even really “supposed to” be here in the first place. So when I think of death I realize that it’s actually the default way of things for us as life forms, to not exist. Life is so incredibly rare and I think of life as kind of a blooper in the universe. Realizing this feels like an existential crisis at first, but then over time it’s actually comforting emotionally. Because it’s easier to accept the deaths of others when you think of how little a chance we had to be born in the first place. This mindset makes it much easier to handle the loss of loved ones, it’s just the way of the universe. Nothing more, nothing less"
I feel that yours and this person's mindset, really gives me some peace about my biggest fear, which is losing a loved one(pet included). 2 years is a gift for the rat and a gift for the world to have that precious rat!

They were like little puppies! my mother fell so deeply in love with them. Unfortunately after a couple years one got sick. My mom paid for her to have mammary tumors removed 2x and eventually they just came back and we had to let her pass.. soon after her death her companion passed away from heart break and she also suffered from the mammary tumors as well. I guess they are a common problem with them. Their names were Peanut and Buttercup... rest in peace little angels 🐁 🐭 ❤

There's a yt channel called "Shadow the Rat" and it's ran by a lady named Esther. The things she's taught her rats to do is nothing short of amazing. Another channel is ran by a man who has 6 rats. He lets them out to freeroam around his apartment and when it's time for them to go home he shouts "RAT TRAIN" and they all come running up his arms and into their cage, just like a little train. I love Rats! I call them “pocket dogs” lol I’ve had many my entire life, and loved every one like a family member! I only wish they lived longer…😢 that’s the hardest part of having a rat! 2 years, rarely a bit longer. But would I say it is worth the heartbreak of them dying so soon for the amazing experience of having a rat as a pet? I say yes though that is a tough call for a lot of people. One thing I would say though,, if you decide you want a rat, and it’s your first one, get a female(they tend to be more.. um.. user friendly to a new rat owner), and commit to giving them a lot of attention and love. I promise they will return that love and in incredible ways!

  • @usernameisusernam
    @usernameisusernam 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

From an actual owner, don’t only get one even if you spend a lot of time with it. You are not a substitute for another rat. It’s like spending your whole life never seeing another human ever again, just a cat. Cats are great, but still not enough. I wouldn’t call it easy either, I personally find it harder than taking care of my dog. And they aren’t really short-term pets despite their short lifespan. You kind of just get more and more as some begin to die to keep the amount of rats you have above 1. And of course you have to slowly build that connection with it, remember, they have teeth and can bite. You have to take that time to get them to trust and love you or you might get a bloody finger. I’ve had one of my girls for a little over a year. I got her from the pet store as a feeder and she’s still not really used to me. Bit me for the first time a few days ago after I had to lure her out of a hole from under the sink and closed it off when she tried running back. Despite that, they’re probably the most docile pet I’ve ever owned. I have heard of a problem with some unneautered males being bitey though. They have extremely strong bites and can bite clean through bone if they want to, which rarely happens even if they want to bite you. Oh, and pet rats don’t carry the plague

Yes, my kids (ages 8 and 5 at the time) absolutely adored our three rats! We also welcomed a new human baby while we had rats, and the rats were so sweet and kind with the baby. The baby did not reciprocate - once or twice he tried to grab and squeeze one of the rats (when I accidentally looked away for a moment) - but our rats never ever ever bit. They were completely gentle.

They are wonderful animals and I feel so lucky to have had pet rats, however it's also important to keep in mind that they are a lot more work than you'd expect and they can be extremely expensive. It was also brutal losing them so close together. Losing 3 elderly dogs over 3 years was bad, but losing 3 elderly rats in 2 months was even worse. 😢

    • @amberkerr2333
      @amberkerr2333 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Totally agree. My three beloved rats had vet bills that were comparable to cats or dogs. If anything, taking a rat to the vet may be more expensive because they require an 'exotics' vet for proper care. But the alternative - not seeking care when they are sick or hurt - is unacceptable in my opinion. The decision to get pet rats should go along with finding a vet and setting aside funds for medical care.

I'm glad to finally see a rational guide that moves away from the extreme thinking that sticks to manuals that say "You should never raise just one Rat." It is better to raise two or more rats, and if you raise only one rat, there is an annoying condition that you have to spend a lot of time on rats, but still, it is not a “sin that should never be committed.” I only raised one rat, and I still get angry when I think about how idiots who only focus on “the text” without considering “the intent of the text in the manual” criticized me as if I were an animal abuser. The truth is, I pride myself on being better than most rats owners.
