I used to play like this with my cat, and he and I had a very good understanding of when it was time to stop fighting. I would turn my hand open palm and just speak in a nice tone to him and he instantly disengaged and would rub my hand. I hope if there’s an afterlife he is there with me.

Cats play very rough. If the cat was even mildly annoyed he would have growled or hissed to say back off before really attacking (teeth and claws beared and ears back).
