Suzuki Burgman 650 Shifting Problems? C51 Code Explanation

  • This video covers 4 problem phases the Burgman 650 can encounter.
    1. Belt won't release and allow neutral to engage
    2. No FI light, and only 1st gear
    3. No FI light and only 2nd gear

    you know more than most dealers, i had oil filter leaking on 2008 and mech. had to get the service manual out to find filter, in New York state, Lot of good info thanks, Bob , florida

    I was calling the center stand switch the side stand switch in the video. The switch in the video is for the center stand. The unit won't start without the side stand switch, I made a mistake in the video calling the switch (side stand) when it is the center stand switch that can cause it to be stuck in 1st gear. Apologies to all.

      Hi Nate. My burgman 2005 executive today started going only up to the 3 gear and if it goes over 4000rpm when in 3 geart it lights up FI light. If i turn it off the light goes of but if istart riding again same thing happens. Its like something wrong with cvt motor or pps sensor? Can you help please

    I have a 650 that powers up but the instrument cluster does not display any info (rpm,speed,mileage,errors... and bike doesn’t run) it will only display high beam and turn signals. Any info? I’m at a loss

    my 2017 had that trouble, under warr. dealer replaced motor , ok now, 27k, I have replaced replaced belt on 2006 with 60k and 1 bearing on 2008, a lot of work

    I have an issue where after bikes run for a while it stops shifting up gears will drop down gear when slowing down but doesn't shift up again have to run in manual to get around. Any suggestions where to look?

    Hello. Thanks for the video. I have a 650 with error C51. I have already tested all the easel sensors, I have already tested the CVT motor with 12 volt, it rotates on both sides, I have already tested the sensor that goes on the cvt and I have not found any problems. I monitored the cable that supplies the CVT motor with 12 volt. I started the bike, accelerating and it should change gears, the C51 lights up as an error, what I saw is that both poles of the cable are with negative polarity and does not send tension. Will it be a problem in the module?

      @@kcsmoto05 Hello. Then the module was replaced and I still have the same problem. Now I will open the harness and check the continuity of the wires that feed the CVT engine with 12v. Post the results.

      @@ScooterGarageBR Thank you for the help. I found the issue. The 2013 manual skips a step which confuses the bike on where the pulley is at. I looked at an earlier manual which provided missing step and solved my issue. I am now an expert at removing an An650 motor and CVT disassemble….

      @@kcsmoto05 This error also happens when the pulley is too open and hits the housing, but when this happens the wheel does not turn.
      Can you provide me with the manual that helped you?

      @@ScooterGarageBR 2003-2012 uses the same CVT and has the correct process in all manuals. Looking at the 13 manual the steps are there but out of order (by 4 pages) and it doesn’t make since. You have to close the secondary pulley, install and lock into place, then manually open up to install belt and other pulley. I was not installing and locking the pulley in place fully closed which caused the ecu to be confused where it was at, and throw a C51 code. Just finished testing and all is good. Thank you for response and offering to help.

      Difficult to do diagnostic without the actual scooter.
      There are two stand switches, center stand and side stand.
      Is yours stuck in 2nd gear? C51 code and stuck in 2nd gear is telling you the ECU is missing an input signal so it's not sending voltage to the CVT motor, (OR) the ECU is not sending voltage to the CVT motor because it's internally damaged. The speed sensors and the PPS are what signal the ECU, they don't often fail. Try the below trouble shooting tips.
      1. Unplug CENTER stand switch, no jumpers, leave unplugged.
      2. Remove your PPV and see if the spring action is broken, if it feels okay and looks okay you can reinstall. If you have a ohm meter check it.
      3. Test the wire harness/CVT motor connector for voltage going to the CVT motor.
      4. Bench test CVT motor with 12 volts and make sure it spins well. Try this and get back to us, let everyone know how you fix it too.

    Hello,
    I am French, I have a Burgman 650 from 2015 with 10,000Km on the odometer (6200 miles).
    The fault code has just been displayed (C58)
    The clutch is spinning a lot, but I'm not moving fast in "D" mode 50km/h "30 miles"
    However "M" mode the speeds pass from 1 to 6 and downshift from 6 to 1 but the clutch slips, the speed can go up to 100km/h "60 miles"
    if you had an idea to advise me i would be very happy.

      I would suspect the PPS(pully position sensor) on the lower right side of the bike.

      Tps sensor and wheel speed sensor check for connection or just clean and put it back it will work. This is common problem on an old bike

    I can’t get the bike in Drive after relaxing all the plastic gears in the CVT transmission. I have to take the spark plug out so the motor will turn over. The motor will no turn over with the spark plus in. By hand I can turn over the motor and transmission by hand with the spark plugs in. The resistance of the compression is very noticeable on each stroke. The CVT belt is in the lowest position which would be 5 th gear.

      It’s a wiring problem in tps. Sometimes you just need to take out clean and put it back

    I thought the side stand switch interrupts the ignition and starter engagement. The center stand switch if stuck closed will prevent the CVT from shifting out of 1st. I just tied my center stand up out of the way.

      You are correct. The side stand switch does kill the starter, and the CENTER stand switch can cause the 650 to be stuck in 1st. I meant center stand switch in the video.

      You can do it without removing the engine I did it by removing engine mounting bolts and raising the bike at the rear wheel. You can get the engine low enough to take everything apart. I raised the back of the bike and let the engine sit and there was room to pull everything apart.

Im in the process of trying to diagnose an issue im having now and came across your vid doesnt seem to be my issue but you make some quality vids with info Ill have to check out more
