Yes it was, and I loved it back then and totally forgot about it and probably haven't heard it for 35 years! Eric Carmen, one of the better rock vocalists to come down the pike, and Gotta love TH-cam for bringing this gem back to life for me. I think I've played it 8 times so far, I can't get enough!

I remember as a teenager in '72 when this came out, I would listen to this over and over ad nauseam until my Dad said don't think you're gonna be going all the way anytime soon. I honestly didn't know what that meant and I wasn't about to ask him. It just struck a chord with my adolescent self and I love it to this day. Thanks for this, guys!

I totally feel you about not asking Dad, when I was about 9-10 somehow was reading a book from a church that was for young teens, it mentioned masturbation, I tried to figure out what it was by the context but couldn’t figure it out, my Dad was only one home with me that day so I asked him, well he hemmed and hawed, finally told me it was something boys did, and it would make you go blind. I didn’t tell him that I figured out finally what he was talking about, I’m not sure who was more embarrassed, him or me!

I loved the music from the Raspberries....I loved Eric's music when he went solo. In the late 80's when he cut his hair....MAN did I LOVE staring at him in his video "Hungry Eyes". It's 10.30pm Tuesday night 12/03/2024 and I've just flicked the T.V. over to Ch 9 in Sydney.
They were showing The Raspberries "Go all the Way"
I thought "Why are they playing that?" "Is Eric touring soon?"
Then I thought "Oh no he hasn't died" "Has he?"
My fears were confirmed by the news voice over person.
    "Eric Carmen was 74"
    Now I can't stop crying.
Not only did Eric help create one of the greatest, mind blowing Guitar riffs in Rock history, he then composed some of the most tasteful Ballads of all time.
Good quality Ballads are extremely hard to write.
Thanks for the great music and the brilliant singing voice Eric.
Eric lived a successful existence and died peacefully in his sleep.
    "Come on Baby!!!"
    RIP - Eric Carmen

Well in some ways yes but of course the female vocals are usually a huge part of ABBA's sound while the Beatles really never featured female singers at all. Badfinger and the Raspberries were similar to the Beatles in band structure and it is possible to envision the Beatles singing their songs.

This was my dad's favorite song from his high school years. He used to tell me when he was a sophomore in 1972, this song was playing in a juke box his school cafeteria had during lunch. He would literally cheer every time he heard this song in Guardians of the Galaxy and in Dark Shadows.
When he died in 2018, I was cleaning my room and had my windows open. Midway through the song, I looked outside and there was a cardinal watchinf me. I like to think that was him checking on me listening to his favorite song again 🥺❤

Go All The Way is one of the greatest power-pop hits of the early 1970's, and has stood the test of time. It has been used in so many different movie/tv scenes, such as "Almost Famous", "Guardians of the Galaxy", and the television series "Life On Mars". Eric Carmen was a classically trained musician who wrote very complex musical works and GATW is his most famous and successful creation. One can't help but to immediately recognize the song after hearing only 2 seconds of the intro. A true power-pop anthem. I have loved this song since the first time it came blaring out of the AM radio in my Buick Skylark in 1972.

Absolutely agree this is one of the greatest power pop hits of all time. I'm from North Central Ohio so the Raspberries were local heroes. It is interesting that Eric Carmen wrote this from the woman's point of view, where SHE wanted to "Go All the Way" (that's why the "slow" part). This song went to #5 on the Hot 100 in 1972. I just wonder how big this group would have been had Carmen not left for a solo career.

Sadly, after Raspberries went through the personnel changes and released their fourth and final album, Starting Over", things went downhill and the band had a traumatic breakup in 1975. Eric Carmen said on stage during a reunion concert in 2006 at B.B. King's in NYC that "All By Myself" would have been the Raspberries next single if the band hadn't dissolved.@@dougclark7077

The lead singer of the Raspberries, Eric Carmen, was a musical prodigy. He was in a music program at the Cleveland Institute of Music at the age of three, began violin lessons by the age of six, played piano proficiently by the age of eleven, and taught himself to play the guitar after becoming unhappy with his guitar teacher's approach. His solo career includes such hits as "All By Myself," "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again," "Hungry Eyes" (from Dirty Dancing), and "Make Me Lose Control."

We were so young we barely understood what we were singing about but we loved Eric just the same. My daughter met him years later when she worked at a high end clothing store he frequented. Eric Carmen is an American singer, songwriter and musician who is best known for his 1975 hit song "All by Myself" which reached the Top 5 in the U.S. and Canada. He was born on August 11, 1949, in Cleveland, Ohio, and began playing the piano and guitar at an early age.
In the early 1970s, Carmen was a member of the Raspberries, a power pop band that enjoyed commercial success with hits like "Go All the Way" and "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)." After the band's breakup in 1975, Carmen embarked on a successful solo career and released several popular albums, including his self-titled debut in 1975 and "Boats Against the Current" in 1977.
In addition to "All by Myself," some of Carmen's other notable hits include "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again," "She Did It," and "Hungry Eyes," which was featured in the movie "Dirty Dancing." Carmen has continued to write and perform music over the years, and was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2018.

Also check out the Raspberries' "Overnight Sensation" and "Tonight" -- the first is a beautiful power pop ballad, and "Tonight" is power pop perfection.
Rest in music, Eric Carmen -- a gifted songwriter, arranger, and performer.

I remember when I was a high school freshman, and this was a huge hit. I bought the 45. My mother had apparently seen a news item, in print or on TV, about how pop music was negatively influencing young people like myself. She was concerned about what music I was listening to, and asked me to play what I was listening to. Guess what happened to be on the turntable? THIS! LOL! I was 14 years old and really didn't understand what "Go All The Way" meant. I just loved the guitar work!

When the vocals come in, the music leaves room for those sweet harmonies.
When the Raspberries formed, they were more concerned with the vocals and harmonies. That just wound up rockin' a bit more than they originally intended.

Eric Carmen was a huge fan of the The Beatles. But, the record company, Capitol, tried to pass them off as the "new" Beatles, which pissed the band off. Also, Eric Carmen hated the way it turned out as far as the sound quality was concerned.

That is what makes the song great. It's got that rocking part in those sweet hooks. This pop song takes you on a roller coaster ride. You go swooping down that hill and then it's slowly brings you up for another big swoop. It's easy to stay on one track put the bride is more fun than they can switch back and forth between lanes

  • @augiedog562

Those transitions were intentional, based on what Eric Carmen has said regarding the; line "go all the way" not being censored from radio play. They wanted to rock, but that line had to be said by the girl in the lyrics. It was early 70s and they were trying to "sneak" it in. Fun!

When the Beatles broke up in 1970, the hunt was on for bands that had that "Fab Four" sound and the two best were Badfinger and the Raspberries. "Go All the Way" from 1972 was the Raspberries first hit and they it followed up with several more fine singles, including "I Wanna Be With You", "Let's Pretend", "Tonight", "Ecstasy", and "Overnight Sensation."
