11:44 everyone I’ve known to watch this series refers to the senior troop in this episode as a heartless bastard
Nothing could be further from the truth
He’s simply managed to come to terms with the simple fact that the deed must be done, no use crying about it, because when you are finished crying, it still needs doing...
Further his clear direction of “DONT let them suffer”...showing he’s not without heart,
Lastly, this scene shows he’s also a honourable good commander, following the code of “I will not order anyone to do anything I’m unwilling to do myself”
He knew and if anything understood and empathised with the kid, who was struggling under the weight of what they were doing, when the kid called him about the puppies, he sighed, excused the kid and did it himself rather than making the kid do it...
If anything he had more heart than most humans in the world today, he might have done some awful things, but the cost of not doing them would be far greater, and he willingly took on the trauma of what he was doing, bore it’s weight so others would be spared the torment

Depends. I served in the russian army back in 2017. 3 sergeants got together for BBQ. They got meat from one of the dogs running around the base. They cut its legs, roasted them and ate them. Filmed the whole thing and sent it off to my sergeant and their friends. That dog accompanied me once, when I was on a trash disposal duty. I've seen those sergeants playing with it the day before it all happened. They didn't look sad and were pretty chatty. I'd be chatty too.

My colonel had to earn a promotion to get out, my lieutenant had to lose a finger. I had to do some wacky shit to get out too - starting from having friendly chats with specific people, up to carrying corpses because it was still better than rotting out in the field with a bunch of thieves.

Its worth remembering that the Soviet Union operated a closed, centrally planned economy, not the free market system we're used to today. The price of most goods was dictated directly by the Government, and stayed basically exactly the same regardless of the state of the economy, and the same was true for wages as well. In that context, 800 rubles is actually a pretty healthy bonus, it would be about equivalent to a year's worth of wages for the average "middle class" household at the time.
Of course, it's still nowhere near appropriate compensation for shaving off at least half of your lifespan, but it would at least be enough to help provide for your family a little bit.

You have to remember when watching this, as bad as it is, it's still a toned down version of what really happened. Yeah, let that sink in for a sec. Irl, it was so much worse, hopefully nothing like this will ever happen again. We owe so much to so many heroes, we'll never know all their names, but at least they are not forgotten.

A person suffering from radiation sickness or acute radiation syndrome is not radioactive, it was only a misconception of the time that those who were exposed to radiation were radioactive. There are only five episodes, each one as a companion to the corresponding episode of the show. The writer, Craig Mazin, talks about how they approached and researched the authenticity of each episode and it's clear that a lot of time and care was taken to ensure the integrity of the show. For example, the scenes in which Khomyuk is being held in a KGB prison were filmed in an actual former KGB prison.

I actually think the show puts Russia in a good light. Once they realise how bad it is they get on and did what had to be done. Yes the government kept vital operating and potential design flaw knowledge from those who worked in the reactor. They didn't exactly rush into fixing the reactor problem until the scientist and physicists pressured them. However, when they were told the extent of the problem what needed to be done they took responsibility and did it. The theme of this entire series at its heart is Lies, therefore a lot more emphasis on lies and stopping the truth or not recognising truth as said in the prologue. Yes Russia Lied but think, how many other governments would have lied to save face.

Like the liquidation of animals and cleaning up the streets and rounding up all remaining residents for extraction, to a safe zone.

It actually more dangerous for them to have someone else around due to their weakened immune system.

Still got a cold look for "wasting ammo", but I don't think that was his concern. My buddy wounded his target and the Sergeant was furious. Finish what you started. Ugly business. If it needs to be done, get it done. Just make sure your men are doing it humanely and not getting sick kicks out of doing it. Don't let them suffer is right, but if there's any warning sign they're enjoying the job, that's a red flag.
