hi from Ukraine. these three divers Ananenko, Bespalov, Baranov have the highest rank title "Hero of Ukraine", they were awarded the order "Golden Star". Ananenko, Bespalov now live in Kiev, Baranov was awarded posthumously.
The sheer transformation that Boris goes through as a character in just this episode alone is honestly astonishing. It's such intense character development that he basically ends up being a completely different person by the end of the episode, and yet it's completely believable and justifiable in the face of the fear and horror he has to face in such a short time. Absolutely masterful writing, as well as acting by Skarsgard.
The names are Boris Baranov, Alexei Ananeko, and Valery Bezpalov. There should be schools and streets named after these men, even here in the US.
Calvin's face during this whole reaction series is just an amazing combination of emotional devastation and existential horror, even when the show's not running
The guy who held the door actually survived until 2011, but he had multiple skin grafts and his arm was much smaller than the other.
Could you imagine an alternate universe where they failed to clean up Chernobyl as they did? Europe would be a nuclear wasteland.
Most influential Horror - Not zombies, not aliens, not monsters, just REALITY....
Calvin looked like when he watched the Red Wedding ... absolute horror.
So those fire fighter clothes are still right where they got left in the hospital. There's videos on youtube of people going down and looking at them.
the helicopter hit the tower crane ropes, there's an actual footage of this tragedy on youtube
Calvin: 60.000 - 80.000 people died overall
"We're asking for your permission to kill 3 men"
A maxed out Gieger counter sound fills me with such dread that even when I was watching this I was on the edge of my seat

Calvin is crying damn, good heart bro
A guy I know said watching Chernobyl on HBO is like watching a slow-motion horror movie. He wasn't wrong...
Historical fact - the clothes of the firefighters who extinguished the fire on the roof are still in the basement of the hospital No. 126 in Pripyat. And it is still radioactive.
Episode 1 - The Explosion
calvin is really into it, I love watching him react.
Just an FYI, The helicopter crash wasn't because of the radiation, it was caused by one of the rotors catching a cable on the crane. It also happened a week after the explosion, not a day. There are a few inconsistencies in the show for dramatization purposes but it doesn't make the severity of the situation any less crazy. I'm sure many have mentioned the HBO podcast for the show but it's worth listening to.
