How Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Got Open Worlds Right (And Wrong)

  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a monumental title, both in its scope, and its overall incredible gameplay. The narrative and overall writing of the game elevated FFVII's original story on nearly every level. However, after spending nearly 100 hours in Rebirth's Open World, and checking off just about every World Intel item Chadley dished out, Dave Klein came away with plenty of praise, but also a fair bit of criticism in how the open world, specifically, was handled.

It sounds like you don’t like exploration games then. I personally like when adventure games gently nudge you towards the direction of main story progression but the most satisfying sense of discovery only comes when you feel like you found something either by accident or because you were being observant of your environment.

@@unipachu I like exploring, but just knowing what quests are available and generally where to go doesn't ruin the fun for me like it does some people, apparently. I have _more_ fun when I know where to go, because it feels like a more efficient use of my time.

I like how the towers were handled in Horizon Forbidden West - one large tower per region that are truely unique to scale. It introduces interesting puzzles to solve but also means that it can be gate kept until you have been in the region for some time, either by unlocking a skill or just being hidden away. By doing this there is a better mix of up front exploration followed by an eventual full reveal.

I feel like something I would have loved to have in this game is secret dungeons in each region. No map marker, but if you find this dungeon, there are puzzles, combat, with a boss at the end of it and good rewards for completing. I get the OG ffvii didn’t have dungeons, but I remember how awesome it felt diving into the temple of the ancients in rebirth and just feeling like “woah, there’s so much down here!”

You mean like every other open world game in existence? There is absolutely no reason to explore other than the odd trinket or restorative on the ground and it always ends up being a waste of time, especially when you're forced to explore. It also isn't open world. It's exactly the same layout as any other final fantasy game in the series except there's no loading screen when enter a new region. That one detail is supposedly what transformed it into open world, but it was lie on Square Enix's behalf to build hype for the game. They claimed it was open world even though it wasn't and tried to say no loading screens makes it open world.

Yeah Chadley and the checklist stuff is definitely the weakest aspect of the game.

Rebirth’s open world feels more like a showcase to me where the designers intended for players to experience every inch of the map as long as they were to complete all of the world intel. In that sense I can appreciate how much detail they’ve put on every map and how meticulously handcrafted it all is. But I feel like once you complete the world intel for each map there’s not much incentive to keep exploring since you’ve basically seen everything there is to see.
After playing dragons dogma 2 I think I enjoy that type of open world where there’s a lot more you can discover organically. Even though its open world is nowhere near as detailed or grand as rebirth the sense of exploration was much more enjoyable for me in the long run.
That being said the initial exploration for each of rebirth’s maps was amazing. Exploring Junon for the first time blew my mind. Every time I thought I reached the end of the map it just kept going. But once I finished all the intel and done all of the side content I ended up never going back
Overall I think rebirth’s open world makes the game feel tight and focused as if you’ve fully accomplished an adventure but it doesn’t feel like it’s an endless expanse with total freedom. That’s not necessarily a bad thing it just depends on your preference. In a way I think it enhances the overall narrative and makes the game feel like a neatly wrapped package. It just left me feeling like I wanted more in the end. I still adore this game and final fantasy in general. I just hope the series can keep their momentum going and constantly improve wherever possible

Activate tower, scan crystal, scan another crystal, find three items in one icon, dig up three items in one area, fight enemies but with rules that don’t really mean much. Do fetch quests. Do one actual cool quest then realize it’s repeated three times each region. Do some minigames, a few which are cool and most which just exists.

The part about the markers is so true. I quickly stopped activating the towers, as they remove all the wow effect of discoveries. And this transformed the experience I must say. I could finally wander around and explore as I wanted, and finding new places/things to do on my own really made a difference. I strongly suggest people avoid the towers if they want this type of experience. The counter argument would be that some specific activities will only appear if you activate a couple towers but it's really a couple of them on each map, but I usually just explore, and activate the towers last when I see that I've done most of the map.

Rebirth is amazing! The open world offered far more than I was expecting.
Personally I’d love them to release an update that allows me to turn off all navigation markers and navigation assists such as the owls and glowing stones. It’s easier for an area to be memorable when you have to pay closer attention to discover things. -I would totally opt in to a no navigation second play through in a year from now.
I love the suggestion about each party member being over a specific region intel, such as red for life springs to ease up on chandler a bit. I also would love more character specific traversal styles with some slightly more challenging puzzles in the open world. (More cait sith sized areas to roll thru, walls for red to scale, Barrett’s guns to unlock ladders, etc)
Add materia load outs. Add Summon battles in the wild. Consolidate the ending to 2 timelines.

For me the biggest issue was not that you were told where to go next, it is that even if you went off track to explore, there was really nothing exciting to explore.
Yes there are no hidden secrets or dungeons to amaze, in this regard FFXV did it much better (though I hate that game), note that I'm not talking about missable items.
God knows we should never include missable items the same way we got rid of random encounters. But at least try to add hidden dungeons and secrets.
Players should not be punished for going about their own way but instead be delighted when they stumble upon hidden sections of the map.
Also another point is that they should've made each region and town more unique, you basically already know after the first place what to expect for every other generic town you'll visit, same type of quests and towers to unlock.

I guess for games that rely heavily in big character/story moments, make sense for those to have markers. Since open world games exist, it's always a challenge balance the freedom of exploration and control the flow of the story.
I guess, in a game like FF7 Rebirth, where the devs want to replicate the same path that players took in the og game, you need to put some restrictions and guide the player in some way. It wouldn't make sense to tell some things in disorder because the player could discover regions "in the incorrect order".
In Elden Ring and TOTK/BOTW on the other hand, where the story moments are more cryptic and open to interpretation, it's okay that the game lets you do whatever you want. And even so, Zelda puts a big marker in each divine beast/temple, later in Hyrule Castle and Elden Ring does the same thing in the Erdtree.
It all depends on intent and purpose.
I do love the side content in FF7R, the objective of pressing triangle in the lifestream is kinda meh butI am always all-in for some lore and world building, I appreciate the log that these quests add where you can read more about the area you're in. But the battle challenges where Chandley talks through the controller, man, I hate those haha.

In any case, definitely agree on how disappointing it is to stumble upon something interesting while exploring an open world only to find out that you can only interact with it by following the rigid questing system. I actually wouldnt mind having the FF16 hunt board instead of the game telling me to go to this marker and fight a special monster. I also think that the game kind of guides you a lot because it was easy to get lost in the OG game and newer players would lose interest in a game they dont really understand. So, I get it, but I wouldve liked to have a little more mystery in finding things and I also wish the towers did clear the fog of war instead of just adding markers to head to certain places. I didn't feel that it got anything right. The maps are just as linear and almost identical to those of the past, the only difference is that each region is connected without a loading screen. That doesn't make it open world, they also gave you a map that wouldn't help even if the entire game was linear and there was only one path to take, the compass is plagued by the same issues as Xenoblade Chronicles 2 only somehow worse because the world isn't really worth exploring aside from data points so when it leads you astray it just feels like a waste of your time. You can't trust the compass at all because the game is so linear, and it will lead you into walls or circles. It also wasted a lot of your time in some sequences that would take upwards of an hour while you just wander around interacting with everything in an area and watching cutscenes.

I disagree that map, markers or goal indicators on the map, somehow took away from players being able to explore the world. There was plenty within the world to draw you into all these nooks and crannies and places that you otherwise wouldn’t explore there were the birds that would hoot, and Fly over you and direct you towards a life spring. There were people that would cry for help. There were prompts from Mai that would suggest a fiend was in the area to battle. I believe there was a good balance between directing people where to go and allowing them to explore.

I don’t think this particular, already very story focused title necessarily needed to focus on discovery in the same way as BOTW, or create story side quests that you stumble upon the way that The Witcher 3 and RDR2 had (and who knows exactly which route Part 3 will take regarding this design choice).
That being said, the world Intel content is def repetitive and does feel like a chore when it comes to the simple lifestream minigames, moogle minigames, and whatever else (the combat ones and proto relic quests get a pass from me). But I can’t think of a better solution. One could just not look at the map and simply explore, and I think there’s a way to turn off the compass at the top, no? If that is indeed possible, you can actually play the game with that same sense of discovery as the other aforementioned open-world titles to downplay the repetitiveness of those simple minigames. I guess you can just cover the top bar of your TV too. Lol.
In retrospect, I really wouldn’t change a single thing about the game [design]… except that ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE CAIT SITH SEQUENCE that most definitely lasts FAR TOO LONG 💀💀💀

BOTW is just wandering and getting lost constantly, the only reason it works is because any shrine counts as your next step. Segmentation is also the correct choice.

Western RPGs both have and don't have markers. It's not a culturally specific thing, it's just handholding in a video game. The maps are divided by chapters and they aren't even that big with visually distinct main story areas, how exactly are you forgetting where you need to go? They can just add a quest log and you always have least 4 other party member to nudge if needed. Some markers are fine, this is overkill.

But either way I didn't really have an issue with how rebirth handled it. Made it easy to choose to do or avoid doing the main quest. As there's nothing more frustrating that accidentally walking into the next story segment when your trying to finish something off then getting locked out of the previous area.

This game was expensive to make. To justify making an expensive game, it needs to be designed for mass appeal.
When designing something for mass appeal, the designer should make the default option accessible to everybody and then create choices and options that allow a more advanced experience for more advanced players.
The way this works in rebirth is that you can complete most of the open world objectives before going to the towers through the natural exploration of the world. That way, the fun of the lifesprings is not pressing triangle to activate it, but instead the journey to find it.
For the side content, they only give you markers for the tower locations at first. IF you are the kind of player who needs or wants or prefers the more challenging experience of exploring the world without objective markers, you don't need to go do an extra thing like turn off the markers, you actually need to do 1 less thing which is to ignore the towers until you have finished exploring. It's not the games fault that you chose to go out of your way to activate more objective markers.

Ubisoft open world vs Elden Ring open world : This is a false and useless debate. Open world structure is just the form of a game, it's not its substance. If a game is really good, it has no importance if it's quest markers (The Witcher 3/ Cyberpunk) or less guided (BOTW/Elden Ring). FF7 Rebirth has the charm and the soul that none of the Ubisoft games will ever offer.

    1. Too much filler content. My playthrough took 107 hours. I could have easily removed 30 hours of filler. I dont mind side stuff and some filler, but felt like this game had too much filler.
    2. Chadley is insanely annoying. He talks non stop, every time you do anything. They need to dial him way back.
    3. Each region while looking different, felt repetitive in a way because of having the same side stuff. Oh hey, scan 5 more towers, scan 4 more life stream crystals, 3 summon temples etc. Wish each region had its own unique stuff.
    4. Too many mini games that for the most part, you have to do. Im fine if they are there and 100% optional, but alot of them were annoying and you needed to do them.
    5. Some regions were too complicated to traverse. Mainly Gongaga but even parts of Cosmo Canyon i had difficulties finding certain places/things.
I know i listed only gripes here but dont get me wrong, the game was incredible overall. FF7R2 did alot of truly amazing things.

The crazy thing about Rebirth to me is that it feels like they designed the open world in such a way that it would provide that real sense of discovery (even the map has the same topography element to that makes Elden Ring's map so great) but then at some point in development it was decided to makes exploration easier and so they added a bunch of markers & made it so you can fast travel to any location. Like a play tester got horribly lost during a session of something.

    • @Wi11iamNZ
      @Wi11iamNZ 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

What's wrong with fast travel?...even elden ring has fast travel. As long as your world is fun to explore and discover the first time there's no reason to hamper a players ability to get where they need to go. To be fair, true fast travel throughout the world of rebirth doesn't even unlock until like 80% of the way through. It was designed this way to make the world feel vast and back tracking to a certain location would take time, that way when you unlock the means to go anywhere at anytime it felt rewarding. I agree with the markers and points of interest though, would have much preferred to have discovered it in an organic manner instead of being pointed to where everything was. I also thought they could've changed how you interact with each POI from biome to biome, just to break up the monotony. At the end of the day though these POI's tied into the gameplay loop well so they were worth ticking off even if they got repetitive fast.

As to your actual point - yes, I know you don’t have to do the towers first.
The point is more-so that this is what you’re shown to do, and you’re given the immediate tools of your map and compass showing these locations. Most players will use these tools, because they are a convenience. You can certainly argue (as you are) that them being optional means players can play however they choose, I disagree, and think it causes most players to play a certain way, and it takes away from a different type of experience.
Take, for example, Dark Souls. You can’t fast travel in the first half of the game, and when the remaster came out, many argued they should give you fast travel right off the bat. Because it’s convenient, and players can ‘choose’ not to use it. But by simply adding that convenience, it takes away any tension (in that particular game) that not having fast travel cleverly creates, which is a big point of that game.
If a game like Breath of the Wild had given the player map markers with all of the shrine and korok locations, even if it was ‘optional’, most players would opt to use it, and it would have created an entirely different experience.
That is my point here. I, personally, think discovery in an open world is a better experience. And these tools you are immediately shown and encouraged to use, which most players will use, is actually taking away from them having a better experience with the game - because they are no longer getting to discover things, or use their brains to realize “I should follow multiple giant cosmo canyon signs to get to cosmo canyon” rather than just defaulting to using a quest maker.
      -
But hey, why not just immediately assume the worst of someone you minorly disagree with about a video game? Someone who, by the way, studied game design and computer science, has been working on making a game for over a year in their downtime, was a TH-camr for years before working for GameSpot, and doesn’t even consider themself a “journalist”.
