Messy is the perfect word. I was left wishing it was combat focused like 16 because I started hating everything outside the combat. Ton of mini games I never want to see again
i share the same sentiment as you on the story - fine with 2 or even 3 worlds/timelines but once they made it seem like there are countless of them, I start to not care so much about what's happened because there is always a possibility of something else happening at another world that we are not aware of. So this makes major events like deaths not significant anymore. I am also not a fan of so many mini games and having them all locked behind strong accessories from crafting, they require too much time commitment to practise and get good with them. I have done all the green sidequests (except the party animal) and all the map explorations, just going to do a 2nd playthrough on hard mode and move on to other games. Game is 10/10 up till the last 15%, sitting at 8.5/10 for me now
The game is a mess. Exuberant amount of mini games, padding, a huge open world but at tue same time it feels so meaningless. What is even the point? Maps not incorporated into the story at all, stick with the main quest and you explore maybe 15%. Narratively, the game borders in disastrous. They had a great storyline and failed to properly hit the emotional beats and on top, convoluted it to hell. That being said, it has been over 20 years since Square released a game with this level of ambition and scope. Combat is exactly like the rest of the game, fun but messy. I really like the "blueprint" they uncovered though. Enormous scope, with huge explorable zones. Wide variety of gameplay. Action combat with strategic elements. They just need to continue to refine this blueprint
I certainly echo some of your points, in particular the inconsistent dodge. Definitely the erratic tone, though it spends most of its time being garish and gaudy. Lastly, I felt remake as well as rebirth is guilty of dismantling the mystique of Sephiroth.
Characters are amazing. NPCs though are distracting from the fantasy world. More like Sims or tourists from a multiculti western city that visit disney land. Even in a small rural mountain oldtown like Nifelheim..... but well, everything has to bee diverse everywhere.
Y'all definitely can't get over the fact that ppl can have differenr ethnicities...even in a fantasy game, that's crazy, what kind of ppl would be complaning abt "diversity" in a npc village?💀

The mistake Square did was to split this game into 3 parts in the span of so many years - Remake was in 2020, Rebirth in 2024 and the next will probably be in 2027 or 2028 and trust me, by then the hype - what's left of it will be dead gone. Instead of making one big game on 2-3 blurays without altering the story with this multiverse nonsense they went on trying to milk this title as much as possible, add as much filler content to keep player "engaged". No wonder it tanks in sales as a sequel. When Remake was announced we all thought we're gonna get the full game but then Square said : but wait... there's more.
Complaining about 5 sec. animations is like complaining that you have to turn off your car, get out and shut the door every time. I know it's a game, but having some reality based animations is a good thing, not a bad thing. The mini-games can throw you off if you're not a fan. I'm a fan of the mini-games, so I didn't mind the challenge with the boxes, or Tifa's sit-ups, or even the frogs. I found them humorous and fun.
