- The ending of Square Enix’s 2020 remake of “Final Fantasy VII” left everyone with some big questions concerning the appearance of a dark haired guy in a SOLDIER uniform, limping along the grasslands, dragging a comatose Cloud alongside him. While fans of the original game were shocked to see said SOLIDER, Zack, alive and well, newcomers were confused. Who the heck is this dude anyway?
Originally introduced in "Final Fantasy VII" published for the Sony PlayStation in 1997, Zack's role, while pivotal, was relatively small. However, as more lore was added to Final Fantasy VII universe, referred to collectively as the "Compilation of Final Fantasy VII", Zack's story was told in greater detail, particularly in the 2007 prequel, "Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-", on the PlayStation Portable", remastered in 2022 as "Crisis Core: Reunion". For anyone who hasn't played either, or maybe just needs a refresher, we present a crash course on best boy Zack Fair, who plays a major role in "Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth".

I love Zach! He’s so refreshing. Total opposite of Cloud if you think about it. Kinda reminds me of Tidus honestly. I can’t wait to see what they’re gonna do with him in Rebirth.

When I played the original FF7 with my friends and my brother as a child, I wasn’t too blown away or anything by the story. Although I still enjoyed it. It’s only when I played Crisis Core and played as Zack is when I really I got invested into the lore of the FF7 universe. I’m happy to see he’s getting the recognition he deserves and hopefully the other cast of CC gets that’s well for the Remake trilogy.

It's me...I was one of those players that were like "who tf is that". Never played the original but after finishing the remake of FF7, the Final Fantasy community has gained a new fan. I am so intrigued by the world and characters of seven. I wanna learn more. I plan on playing Crisis Core Reunion and Rebirth as well. It's amazing how FF7 is like a whole standalone franchise from the other games.
Make sure you buy tissue with ff7:Crisis core, you're going to need it. 😭

I remember playing crisis core on psp, my character is so strong that the last battle i played hours just to not let zack die, even though i know its inevitable.

thanks for this video i had no idea about how important he was in the originals as I've only played the remakes. I kept thinking as to why he was so prominent on the menu poster and why we were spending time with him at all.
They really need to remake Before Crisis as Cissnei is a player Turk also known as Shuriken. That story really deserves to be fleshed out and made available for the wider part of the compilation.
They will supposedly adapt it in the next years in the Ever Crisis mobile game.

crisis core was the first ff game i played on my psp back in 2020 (found my lost disc) and then lockdown happened and remake released… BOY IT WAS A TREAT FOR ME
I have a theory zack’s side of the story in the game is actually him dead within the life stream. That’s why Cloud’s body is unresponsive because his soul is still on earth.
The best FF protagonist. Really hope we get another fight between Sephiroth and Zack, Soldier 1st Class vs Soldier 1st Class.
You can also get Yuffie before reaching Gongaga. If she’s in the party, this also triggers dialogue about Zach.

If they bring Zack back as a playable character, I'm happy. I'll be happier if they give him a better send-off than just killing him in a heroic battle. I don't know about him and Aerith spending more time together, because they were seen in Advent children together in front of Cloud, so that wish needs to be broader.
The two timeline situation is definitely confusing. Zach and Cloud are definitely in the same timeline. I'm surprised you didn't mention that Cloud could be Zack's clone or viceversa. I'm really hoping that they explain what's going on. I see it more as two characters within the same timeline.

There's several versions of the Nibelheim events and its best you experience it for yourself in order to understand the context. In terms of Rebirth, just understand that Cloud is recalling from his memories.

I hope Caleb Pierce does a good job in rebirth. Crisis core reunion felt a little flat after being so used to and attached to Rick Gomez as Zack. But I am hoping it was just the awkward writing or directing in Crisis Core reunion. rip rick gomez as zack, heres hoping the significantly larger budget of Rebirth allows Caleb to deliver a great performance

The original FF7 story was already bonkers and fairly complex for its time. Was adding divergent timelines and possible multiverses really necessary? I'm just hesitant how they're going to tie all of this together because my hunch is a lot of it is misdirection e.g. Zack is alive in Rebirth, but will ultimately die, again, in the third chapter because that's the only way to reconcile the OG timeline? So, why bring him back other than fan service and misdirection? Same goes for the other big plot point everybody is speculating about. If it means nothing in the end... Why do it?
No, but they wanted to, and technically there was the slightest lore basis about the Ancients, Planet, and Lifestream that they could have worked from for the 'destiny' and 'timelines' concepts, so it wasn't 100% added in, only 95%+ added, lol. They definitely didn't have to do this, but have apparently chosen to soft reboot the sub-series by pulling all Compilation entries together and elevate every aspect of them into a unified story (and possibly sequelize/spinoff things in the future), and they chose a multiverse in order to do that.
The Zack story in itself is supposedly to be a vehicle for the weirdest elements of their plan that are the least connected to Cloud's OG story, so that there's less 'contamination' while the OG-ish plot still occurs. Zack himself returning is weird, as everything else they're playing with is going to be weird. Its all intentionally weird to provide twists and an openness to doing new things with the series while it nonetheless still continues most of the OG story beats.
The trilogy will likely still end with Zack in the Lifestream, and his connections to everything else going on being rare, but impactful.
I saw an interview with the producer where he basically explained the writing and flow of the original didn't work like they intended, and they want to clarify and improve upon this. I think the new timeline thing they added is a way for them to tell the story differently and clarify it, but within the confines of the game's world and story. It's less of a shock to players if some unknown force within the story is "changing" events, rather than them just making the change outright. Personally, I think it's a clever way to inject the story changes and have it feel more natural to the player but also allow them the freedom to creatively express themselves while clarifying story flow.

I heard from the leak that Zack is playable in Rebirth, But with limited mechanics with no health and Atb, but he does have Special Triangle Ability. Seems like they're gonna do a dlc for him like yuffie in Remake.
A Zack DLC would make the most sense for SquareEnix lying and saying they have no DLC plans. They'd have to have people finish Rebirth before any announcement of more paid Zack content.
Square said that they have no plans for Rebirth DLCs because they are already working on Part 3 and want to devote all their focus to it.

The mentioned it. Zack died way after Cloud killed Seph. They were put in the tubes for 4 years after Seph was defeated and then some time after Zack was killed by the Shinra Army.

Yes , cloud is in a wheelchair in the original ff7 after the (event) happens and you clearly see people that aren't supposed to be there next to cloud be there while he's in a wheelchair

They butchered his voice in CCR, sounds like someone trying to voice act while pinching his nose. Apparently they were rushing it so we got what we got. The OG CC was the best version of him

Cloud is a loser who wanted to be like Zack and he even created an illusion he was like Zack and believed in it. He admitted it later on. Also Zack was fighting on its own while Cloud had a whole gang.

Have these writers not learned to stay tf away from time travel and multi universes. They aren’t smart enough to make it work. It always ends up being a complete mess. They are just going to ruin a great story for the sake of fan service. A remake should clarify things not make them more convoluted.
No, because the first Final Fantasy had a plot that used time travel at its core, and SquareSoft did multiverse stories since the 1990s. Its always going to be among the writing tools they use because its actually a part of their series or at least company creative assets. They may take a break or two from it at times, but its as Final Fantasy as moogles and airships. Time magic will never go away.

They forgot to mention Zack was 1st class Soldier and Cloud was just Shinra infantry. They also didn't explain why Cloud has Zacks memories in him so yes Zack IS the real hero in FF7 and Cloud is just cos playing as Zack.
