I grew up throwing bike parts together and fixing my own bikes. Have not ridden in 30 years and just picked a couple bikes for me and the wife. Brake calipers are a lot more sophisticated then they used to be. Your tutorial was a lifesaver.
I’ve never done anything with my bike but ride- my front brake wasn’t working- your video helped me fix it- your views and explanations are awesome!! I THANK YOU!!!
Sorry to sound like a broken record, but... Man! This video is like a breath of fresh air. By far the most thorough, well explained, no B.S. video I have ever seen. You saved me from an S-load of frustration I got from being in the dark about many of the details you plainly laid out. Thank you, sir!
This video is excellent and will help you get your brakes in order. Make sure you test your brakes before going on your first ride on any Walmart bike. The particular Walmart I got my Roadmaster Granite Peak 26" at, is really terrible at assembling bikes. They are either lazy or they're under tremendous pressure to throw them together. Also make sure your handlebars are tight. I took a test drive on their patio, the steering wheel went sideways on me and I crashed. Long story short the bike I eventually got had brake pads that were misaligned and this guy is saving me !
Just getting back into biking, so I found this really helpful. I bought a 1988 GT Avalanche and I'm putting it together. So much to be learned about bikes but it's very satisfying to be able to do this work oneself.
Your two videos on this model of bike helped me to put it together today and begin adjustments by myself despite the uselessness of the instruction booklet. The brake adjustment will be a challenge, but at least now I have an idea of how to adjust the sensitive front brake so I don't toss myself into the bushes. Thank you.
Only into the video a short time and I have learned more from this than a whole bunch of other videos I have watched. I have a new Schwinn Meridian from Amazon and your video was a big help. Thank you. Now I need a video that shows how to install the derailer because mine was laying on the bottom of the box when I first opened the box. Bike manual does not cover this.
Very informative! You answered questions I had in my frustration of trying to adjust the fool brakes! lol! I hope it will be easier with this information. Thank you so much!
awesome, very detailed. I had one extra good advice at a workshop that I once followed: if you detach a breakpad, do one at a time, so that, if you forget the order of the washers, you can still see the right order at the other breakpad.
Thanks for explaining the calipers in detail. Every other video stopped at the pad adjustment which, for my bike, made zero improvement. I need to adjust at the pinch nut. Thx again!
Many thanks for a great presentation - the what to do and why, all in easy to understand terms. You have saved me a lot of ill-advised tinkering and my granddaughter will be very happy! :-)
Great tutorial! One suggestion is to adjust the point of front brake lockup as close to the handlebar as you can keeping in mind the individual that will be riding it. Do NOT lockup the brakes too early as that will send you over the top of the handlebars quicker than you can blink an eye!
Adjusting the breaks like in this video is the hardest part of a low-wage bike assembly job. If you're a beginner this is a good reference/guide for that. Learning how to do the tightening and loosening of the spring screws is important and easy to forget.
thx. Exactly what i needed to learn. My bike mecanic or bike shop did not have enough patience with the brakes on my bike (because my bike is a cheap bike, and the mecanic had other customers). So, i need to learn how to fix the brakes myself. Of course, knowing how to tighten the spokes comes before adjusting the brakes.
Bro I brought this bike just yesterday used for $50 for my daughter I want too make sure she’s safe riding. Just looking At it is noticed a few things maybe. I can fix too save money with the help of a expert. can u do a video on the road master derailleur replacement. How to resolve front wheel wobbling?
I know this video is quite old, but could you make a video on changing the back tire of this bike. I had to change a flat tire on this bike, and I am unable to complete it's reassembly due to the large screw in the derailleur. If you could help me out, it would be much appreciated.
If I need a replacement brake arms, how do I know which size and type. I noticed that there are different length arms. I would like a whole new brake set for my bike.
I'm trying to install a new brake line on a rear linear brake, and I'm following your directions, and others I've watched, and every time, the calipers go in when you press the lever but won't come back out, and the ferrule keeps falling out of the lever. I give up. I do not understand what that's happening. Unthreaded the calipers move freely.
i need a help....problem is this way that when i pull brakes for braking , the wire which pulls the brakes comes out from the main socket from where the wire starts . what is the solution of this prob.
Mathieu Clerté the cable noodle is the metal housing that makes a 90 degree turn at the end of the brake cable housing. The pinch bolt is the bolt that pinches the brake on the opposite brake arm that the noodle notches into.
Both are excellent if you are using quality components, (Supermarket bikes do not use quality components). Generally rim brakes are sharper, however hydraulic disc are the best in all weather conditions. The demonstration at the end of the video where the cyclist almost goes head over the handlebars (stoppie) is a disc brake bike.
Make sure your wheel is true and attached correctly, than use the spring tension screws on the caliper for finer adjustments and make sure the pads are aligned correctly.
Hi I think I just broke this bike I loosened the cable and the whole cable came out and the little metal piece on the end of cable came off. ... so I fed it back threw but now there is no tension?
Best DIY Bike brake Repair/Adjustment video on the internet. Great work thanks for the upload 🙏

I've watched a few of these linear brake DIY videos and this BY FAR the best. Cheers mate.

We would have been so lost without this video. Thank you so very much!
Learned one thing that is adjusting one screw sets both the calipers.

Can't begin to tell you just how much this helped me today. Thank you, thank you 🙂🙂🙂🙂
Great way of explanation! I was so tensed while adjusting my bike’s break before watching this video.
Came to learn about tightening the linear brakes on my bike fell in love with your moody Scottie.

Thank you. Fixing up an old Schwinn bike and the front brakes were a mess.
Thank you so much for the clear and thorough tutorial on adjusting brake pads and brakes. Your help is greatly appreciated!
awesome, very detailed. I had one extra good advice at a workshop that I once followed: if you detach a breakpad, do one at a time, so that, if you forget the order of the washers, you can still see the right order at the other breakpad.
Thanks for the info and for watching!

Thx again!
Thank you for your video, Seen a few other brake videos you were more thoro and detailed. I didn't become an expert, but I did fix my brake problem.
Thank you soooooo much!! I feel so educated on this topic after watching your video! All questions answered! THANKS!!!

Good and clear explanation of a trickey job made easy. Thanks, great help.

Wow I learned so much today, Thank You so Much Gods Blessings in you
Sturdy, well-built, amazing
The brake arms are leaning to one side. How do I fix this?
Question is there a brake mechanism specific to a model bike or are they universal?
I know this video is quite old, but could you make a video on changing the back tire of this bike. I had to change a flat tire on this bike, and I am unable to complete it's reassembly due to the large screw in the derailleur. If you could help me out, it would be much appreciated.
Great videos. But the one I bought didn't have the chain on. Wish you had a video about fixing/adjusting the chain!
Helped me a lot Thank you very much
Very clear and super-helpful, thank you so much!
Exactly what I needed to know. Thank you for the great video.
If I need a replacement brake arms, how do I know which size and type. I noticed that there are different length arms. I would like a whole new brake set for my bike.
This video helped me a lot. Thanks!
Good info thank you!
Great video. Thanks for making it.
Great video. It will stop me in my tracks. Very arresting.
So helpful - many thanks
Definitely
I can't get my handlebar shifters on this bike to move at all and it is a fairly new bike. What could the problem be? Bought it from someone else.
Thanks for not rushing through.
I discovered that the tension in the wire was to tight. Thats why my breaks were too close to the wheel. So I fixed it and the brake alignment.
This really help me a lot
Great, informative video! Much appreciated.
Great video and instruction, thank you.
You didn't mention the silver 3/4" screw above the break barrel. What is that for please? what does it adjust. Thanks for the vid.
I'm trying to install a new brake line on a rear linear brake, and I'm following your directions, and others I've watched, and every time, the calipers go in when you press the lever but won't come back out, and the ferrule keeps falling out of the lever. Hard to say from your post. Check the spring tension, it may be too loose not allowing the caliper arms to return.
Excellent video, very helpful. Thank you.
What do you recommend if the left hand side brake is sticking and won't come back off the tire?
Adjustment of the tension or lube the pivot.
Great lessen Bro !Thank you .
Thank you this helped a great deal
Thank you so much that tutorial.
i need a help....problem is this way that when i pull brakes for braking , the wire which pulls the brakes comes out from the main socket from where the wire starts . what is the solution of this prob.
What is the "cable noodle bracket" and the "pinch bolt" ? ( 00:48 )
Mathieu Clerté the cable noodle is the metal housing that makes a 90 degree turn at the end of the brake cable housing. The pinch bolt is the bolt that pinches the brake on the opposite brake arm that the noodle notches into.
I made a mistake and removed the screw tension and it won't come screw back can I leave it out
If you release the cable and the caliper spring you should be able to re-insert the screw. Not good to leave it aout as cann cause imbalance.
great video
Thanks, very helpful.
First rate. Thank you.
Genius, thank you !!!
This is better or disc brakes?
Both are excellent if you are using quality components, (Supermarket bikes do not use quality components). Generally rim brakes are sharper, however hydraulic disc are the best in all weather conditions. The demonstration at the end of the video where the cyclist almost goes head over the handlebars (stoppie) is a disc brake bike.
17:40 when the tire get spinning you can see the wheel is not true. make sure your wheels front and back have been trued.
what do you do when 1 side is rubbing and the other is not?...thanks...yes a walmart schwinn
Make sure your wheel is true and attached correctly, than use the spring tension screws on the caliper for finer adjustments and make sure the pads are aligned correctly.
I followed all of your techniques but I cannot get the handle brakes to have a 2-inch gap. I'm frustrated
Hi I think I just broke this bike I loosened the cable and the whole cable came out and the little metal piece on the end of cable came off. ... so I fed it back threw but now there is no tension?
HaHa
thx
👌 perfect
How do you adjust the suspension
Jellero Gaming You can't adjust garbage fork like in the video, more expensive have preload, lockout, rebound ect.
Thank you
The first eight minutes here are spent detailing how high the brakes pad should be on the tyre rim. Nothing else.
There not pads they are brake blocks pads are on disc brakes
he got the cheapest bike ever
