Also, who tf cares? You don't need a degree in journalism to be knowledgeable at it. Journalism, like a lot of art, falls under "Yeah, it's cool if you went to school for it, but it's not a requirement."
There are things where a degree HELPS, and there are things where a degree is REQUIRED.
      Journalism-->Help.

Dispatcher here. I just wanted to say these women handled these calls fabulously! The second call taker was amazing. Her questions after the 500th "she's behaving erratically" was attempting to see if the caller knew if this "erratic behavior" was different from the subject's baseline behavior. As soon as she established this caller did NOT know the subject personally and had no way of knowing the subject's baseline behavior, she was done with the shenanigans. We deal with SO MUCH. We literally do not have time to deal with petty internet drama!!! Every call has to be dispatched for safety reasons. If you're calling on some BS, we can smell it!! I have dealt with mental health issues throughout my life and have been lucky to have the support to get where I am today. The way people are now using 'therapy language' to hide their negative intentions is so frustrating.
Wellness checks are not great anyway but to intentionally use it to mess with someone is disgusting. A lawyer of all people should know that's unacceptable. It doesn't even support her client and could actually undermine her case.
It's like getting all the other athletes kicked out on technicalities and thinking that's the same as winning first place. That's not your job and now it's about what they did wrong not what you did right.

I work for a family law firm and the tendency for judges when there's kids involved is to split custody. So long as the parent is actively wanting to be involved and not on drugs/getting arrested judges WANT both parents to be involved. As much as the mom wants to lie it will need to be proved in court. We do custody cases with complete sociopaths involved on both sides and judges are good at sniffing the BS out.

@@wajmgirli might have this wrong, i dont know anything about anything, so please someone else chime in if thats the case, but irrc one reason people abuse the yt copyright system is to obtain such info from people.
I beleive that a creator has to release their full name and an address in order to dispute a copyright claim... Because in a world where people arent awful, the next step for the claimant would be to serve the claimee with a lawsuit (because you only claim if you _truly_ beleive someone has infringed your copyright... Right??) aaand you need to know who youre serving.
The claimant has 10 business days to go forward with that legal action. In the meantime, the content may stay down. Most of the time this is as far as it goes and the strike goes away when the claimant fails to go forward with a suit.... But the false-claimant gets to walk away with information on the person they're harrasing AND they messed up the videos position in the algorithm by taking ot down for 10 days. Shits so broken.

I would guess being an attorney or partner in a prestigious law firm would financially benefit an attorney.
Which calls into question why an attorney would choose to represent individuals that participate in online drama. That just doesn’t seem very lucrative. It always hurts to see people abuse their power. Especially when they know what they are doing is wrong. To abuse the systems on these platforms is disgusting. Miss Janet seems to be a power hungry person who thrives on attention. It doesn’t help that the people she represents encourage her behavior. It’s embarrassing to see a middle aged woman doing videos and writing emails basically because a creator got their feelings hurt. But of course that’s my opinion and who am I but a lonely little subscriber.

Watching lawyers look over and react to Jeanette's filings has been so funny. The part where she tells the person she's corresponding with to "refrain from giving her legal refreshers" and Ian Runkle was like girl are you sure? Because you seem really confused about what your job and its limitations are. Also, the irony of Lauren's content being about common causes of death and her lawyer is out here calling "wellfare checks" (it's swatting, let's call it what it is - you can still be killed on a welfare check and she literally only did it as an intimidation tactic).

    • @S3lkie-Gutz

Literally! Omg please do not send wellness checks to random people over the internet especially if said person on the receiving end is a racial minority disabled/neurodivergent/mentally ill or lgbtq+ or a woman/femme presenting person. That gave me a special kind of ick as a mixed indigenous person, we already face so much police brutality and misconduct but there has been so many indigenous women killed by the police during a "wellness" check, including here in Canada(Ontario I think, the details of the case are fuzzy to me atm). It is absolutely a weapon and I'm damn sure Lauren knew what she was doing so shame on her. If Kitti was a person of colour or had any conditions or disabilities that the police could interpret as violent aggressive or risky behaviour she could've very much been killed over it, I also have paranoid schizophrenia ocd and c-ptsd which already makes customs on the American side of the border look at me funny and profile me over it(literally the only thing keeping me from being unnecessarily searched and detained is my handicap parking pass) and I have confided in my mother that when I move away from her that she absolutely does not call a wellness check on me and just sends a trusted relative or friend to check on me instead. What a disgusting selfish human being Lauren is shame on her.

@R-502 I want the term “soft swatting” to become a thing so that people don’t get away with downplaying it as “concern”. It’s obviously not the same as calling in a threat, but sending an armed officer to someone’s door carries inherent risk. Jeanette thinks she’s cute threatening people with someone else’s gun.

If you pass a state bar, you just have to pay the fee to practice in that jurisdiction’s federal court. I’m licensed in federal court. This doesn’t make me a “federal lawyer.”
Also confused about her claim she is a mandatory reporter for erratic behavior as an officer of the court. In very specific circumstances are certain attorneys considered mandatory reporters. I used to work in the Fed Gov regarding public information so I like to say I was in the business of "covering ass, which actually created more space for principals to be more candid. You are a master in CYA. It's a legit skill, and I'm glad to see content that is so well researched and presented. It was very informative as a content consumer!

mama tot is definitely sneaking under a lot of people radar’s…what bothered me the most is when she got really big she openly said she has her “friend” on her accounts responding to comments so half of these people thinking “ mamatot” is reaching out to them when it’s actually one her internet friend’s she hasn’t met or hardly know and that’s shitty if you can’t personally respond that’s understandable but to basically give someone struggling an answering machine is not it for me.

SAME. I heard the calls once and I can't do it again. That first time, I had to keep pausing because I couldn't deal with it in one go. Listening to those calls is not just mentally uncomfortable, but actually physically uncomfortable because of the extreme embarrassment.
Imagine being the one having to deal with them on the phone!

It’s unfortunately fairly common especially if someone is a person of the global majority. It happens a lot on twitch especially, but also pretty much anywhere at this point as an abuse/silencing tactic. It’s deplorable honestly and shouldn’t be a thing.

Thank you for posting this, and for delving into the legal definitions. It is really helpful for other content creators. I recently started calling out scams on Instagram, and quickly realized how dangerous it is to be an anti-scammer. It's taxing on mental health, moderating comments is physically exhausting, and since scammers have no other recourse, they often just attack the messenger, in an effort to get us to give up. That takes a toll. It helps to see that you're still calling out scams, despite how hard it is to do so.

Gotta love how Lauren and Janet decided to accuse Kitti of blackmailing, and what was their response? To blackmail multiple creators into silence by abusing the copyright strike system.
And what did blackmailing people into silence do? Make this whole situation EXTREMELY well known.
Instead of just simply backing down and accepting that Jamie is, in fact, a professional, and that she [Lauren] isn’t, she ruined her image even more along with her awful lawyer.

If Janet were my lawyer, I would start to worry when watching this all unfold. I mean she specializes in IP law and, in my opinion, seems to have a very, very weak understanding of copyright law. I also have wondered what the legitimacy is of her representing all of these people in states she is not barred in. I can’t really find a clear answer about how this works with all the work being posted online; Bunnie resides in TN, Lauren resides in WI (allegedly, from what I understand), and Mama Tot resides in AL. From what I understand, lawyers need to barred in the state where action is being taken against their client, but since this is all about online copyright, would that be the state in which the content originates or the state in which the alleged infringement is originating? She clearly can’t represent Lauren in CA so, in my opinion, that’s the reason that the suit against the Girlies was filed as a joint suit under a different lawyer. But that suit is not based on copyright infringement, it’s based on defamation. What is the legitimacy of all of the previous action (threats of litigation, cease and desists, etc.) she’s taken in reference to copyright infringement claims?

I think calling a fake wellness check could (and should) be thought of as swatting.
There have been multiple instances of people (primarily POC) being killed by police during a wellness check, including non-violent and rational individuals.
It needs to be said that, unfortunately, the resources of the law are not equally beneficial. Being able to take advantage of these resources is a privilege, abusing that privilege is dangerous and potentially lethal.
Kitti isn't black, and as she said herself, out of all the people to be on the receiving end of a false wellness check, she is one of the safest. This is far from the case for a lot of people.

the copyright policy should be used against creators like SSSniperwolf, not people simply speaking about a person’s/ creator’s absurb behavior.
