    Yeah... it’s about his son, “Devo H. Keenan”... this can basically be seen as H. Part 2... he’s saying he got everything he wanted and was living large in the rockstar lifestyle... living like a king... a sultan... but after his son was born, it put his life in perspective, and really changed him for the better... and he’s saying that he’d give it all away if he were given the choice between all that decadence and success and his son’s life and his relationship with him... pretty straight forward when you listen to it over with this perspective.

    From song facts: “"Jambi" is an Indonesian Province in Sumatra, which was once part of a powerful kingdom with a rich sultan who lived an opulent lifestyle. The setting reinforces the message that family and friends are more important than wealth... which is a great interpretation, but it turns out that this song was inspired by the kid's TV show Pee Wee's Playhouse, which had a genie character named Jambi. At a drum clinic in Kansas, Tool Drummer Danny Carey explained that when Justin Chancellor came up with the bass part, Carey thought it sounded like Jambi's chant on the show: "Mekka-lekka hi mekka hiney ho." Lead singer Maynard James Keenan wrote lyrics about a genie and making wishes, and the song was born. While it could appear to have deeper meaning, Carey claims it was simply a joke.” I would add that I personally think that the song takes on multiple meanings, as per usual with Tool, in that the rhythm was joking named after the chant from Pee-Wee’s Jambi who made wishes AND the lyrics also reference the power of having material things (as per a king) while desiring more meaningful things like relationships, mixing the two meanings of the word Jambi as inspiration for Maynard’s personal perspective and creative outlet.

    Jambi is named after the genie in the show "Pee Wee's Playhouse". I believe Danny Carey thought the bass riff sounded like the chant the genie would do, so they named the song after that character and made the song about wishing for things. An unusual way to create a song but very interesting.

    The vocals with effects are actually adam jones and are from a talkbox. he sends his voice through his guitar to modulate it that way.

    • @joechurch7
      @joechurch7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Dimi Devos talk box originally invented by Bob Heil for Joe Walsh to use on the song Rocky Mountain Way then Peter Frampton got his hands on it and used it on the Frampton comes alive album. David Gilmour was a huge influence of Adams and used it on the animals album particularly on the song pigs. If you listen to Gilmore solo on dogs it has a mirror template to Adams solo on descending. The talk box is actually taking your guitar sound running it through a plastic tube into your mouth then using the shape of your mouth to modulate the guitar sound back into a microphone. Pretty easy to build by yourself that’s what I did they are fun to use. I’m fond of running my theremin through the Talk box

    The talk box solo by Adam Jones was replaced with a dual guitar solo with the guitarist from Judas Priest when I saw them live in Nashville in Jan. I am so glad I was there, the air was electric that night. Especially when they played Swamp Song, I recommend that one next :)

    The awesome thing about Tool is that their albums are like a storybook, all the songs flow into one-another. So if you get a chance, listen to an album from beginning to end, they flow so seamlessly, it’s amazing!!

    The "Riding" flow of Jambi is that the guitar solo is one of the best I've ever heard. I often think of many later favorites that I think were undoubtably influenced by Tool. Deftones, Chevelle, Mudvayne, Opeth, Meshuggah.
    Pick one. You guys can't go wrong with any of them.

    I know that it's practically a sin to mention another band when Tool is the subject, so as a preemptive repentance, I'll suggest another Tool song first.
    I'd like you guys to eventually react to Tool's song, "Jimmy." Probably one of their sadder songs, but it's deep and it hits.
    Now, with that, I'd also like you guys to explore Tesseract. They're not really like Tool, but they are a band within the same genre. I would suggest one of their older songs first, like "Acceptance" or "Dystopia."
    Either way, I'm looking forward to the next reaction.

    There's references to the character Jambi from Pee Wee's Play House, who was a genie, and in the lyrics Maynard mentions wishing things, so that's where the name comes in and how you pronounce it.

    Hey trash talkers.....jambi is 'iamb' in finnish.....the idea for the song title was initally based on the idea of the iambic meter which is the rhythm established for the line of lyrics....but the song jambi which is a Indonesian province in Sumatra. Jambi was a powerful kingdom where a rich sultan lived a lavish lifestyle. The message, I think, explains the parallel in Maynard's life of achieving fame is an alter ego to this rich sultan's life and how family and friends are more important than fame and riches. Danny Carrey made a comment that the drum roll reminded him of the genie in peewee's TV playhouse sounded like "mekka lekka hine makes a hiney ho."
    Hey trash talkers, in the next chapter of the tool journey I would like your reaction to the song Faaip de Oiad in your next posting of tool Tuesday. Thanks.

    Adam Jones is using a Talk Box effect on the guitar solo. One of his inspirations is guitarist Joe Walsh who played with the James Gang and the Eagles. Adam asked his advice about using a Talk Box for a guitar solo which Joe helped popularize with his song "Rocky Mountain Way". Another great song that I think you guys would like! "Spent the last year Rocky Mountain Way/Couldn't get much higher!"

    A little Tool Trivia-- Jambi was the name of the genie on Pee wee's Playhouse ("Meka-Leka-High-Meka-Hiney-Ho") on which Adam Jones got one of his earliest SPX production gigs. And according to Maynard, like much of 10000 Days, has to do with the death of his mother and wishing for another minute with her. Also, I believe this was Adam's first experiment with his Frampton-esque Talk Box.
