      27 year member of the Tool Army here... listen to this song 2 more times and you will catch the convergence of the separate rhythms of the guitar, bass, drums, vocals. Hope you keep listening to them and try to always have lyrics handy. They add an entirely new dimension to the message.

    IMO, Jambi is probably one of the hardest songs Tool has to catch the beat in and you are correct, it's by design. Tool is known for using polyrhythms and having multiple time changes within each of their songs. Very technical stuff, some people refer to it as Math Rock. Try Vicarious and The Pot of this same album. Both are an easier listen beat wise.

    Also:
    Jambi is a blue-faced (later green) genie who lived in a jeweled box, first appearing in The Pee-wee Herman Show. Usually appeared once per show to grant Pee-wee a wish, often with unexpected results. Sometimes he appeared more than once per show or not at all. His catchphrases included "Wish? Did somebody say 'Wish'?", and the magic words "Mecca lecca hi, mecca hiney ho" (which grew more complicated in select episodes; John Paragon later confirmed that it was "fake Hawaiian"), and once a wish had been granted, "The wish is/has been granted. All hail/Long live Jambi!", after which the doors to his box would close. After the incantation he would either nod his head or gesture, and send forth blue or green energy rings that, when in contact with the wisher, will grant the wish.
    I listen to Jambi every day.

    As a guitarist, playing this song is all about "feeling" the rhythm as opposed to actually counting it. The guitars are playing a pattern that is far simpler to follow than the drums. In a lot of Tool songs, I treat the guitars and bass as the primary rhythm that my ears follow because it's much easier to keep up with them as opposed to the complexity of Danny Carrey's polyrhythmic drum parts. There are a few sections in the song where listening the drums is helpful (especially in the course and pre-solo breakdown which is in 6/4 time), but even though I've heard this song like at least 60--70 times while I learning the guitar part for it (which is actually fairly simple in terms of technique), I still occasionally loose rhythm if I'm solely listening to the drums and not the guitar.

    Just close your eyes and go with it. Try not to count or find the beat. Just let it flow through you. It's how you approach Tool, but looks like a lot of people have told ya that. You'll get it, you see the talent, you'll get more comfortable with time. ✌ EDIT: I find it easier to sway my head than head bang. 😉 Keep digging into their discography. This reaction got ya a new sub. 👍

    So, the main beat in the song is in a count/loop of 9. When that comfortable 'groove' drops in the middle its in a loop/count of 6..
    Most of the song is just divided into 3s (1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3). I know it most likely feels awkward when most pop and hip hop is in count/loops of 4

  • @lilrazexxx5849
    @lilrazexxx5849 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    tool is very known for different time signatures. it’s not 4/4 it’s all over the spectrum. Rap and hip hop stick to a 4/4 rhythm. Tool is a different breed. Being a drummer my self i’ve printed off sheet music from their drummer, they have spots of simple patterns to be able to “nod your head” try and learn about different time signatures and i bet you’ll be amazed at what these band members can do.

  • @nb8817
    @nb8817 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    There’s no “base line” for most of this song, it’s still in 4/4 but the vocals are what’s keeping the beat most of the time.
    The really fast drums are still in 4/4, it’s just a lot of 8th and 16th notes and their arrangement moves around a lot.
    For Tool you’re more likely to find the beat in the vocals. (Which is part of what gives them their sound.)

  • @GoldTop57
    @GoldTop57 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Part of the problem for you is that the instruments are often not playing the same time signature. Sometimes the bass is playing 5/4 and the drums are playing 6/4 or something, so then the repeating cycles will only meet up at certain times. You’ll rarely be able to just nod your head like a basic beat. After the drop, where the solo comes up, they are all playing in 6/4 time, so you can catch that beat.

  • @jasonrd316
    @jasonrd316 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's purposefully dissonant to start. My take, and it is just my take, is that it is meant to resemble the conflicted nature of the character described in the song. Hedonism versus the relationships he or she values.

  • @Reive33
    @Reive33 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    No, it’s not just you. A lot of their songs are like that and they definitely do it on purpose. People much more musically educated than me can and will tell you all about it, I’ll just say it’s one of the reasons I dig their music so much. Their earlier stuff is easier to get into from a beat/time signature perspective. Sober is a good example of a more basic rock song from them and there’s a great video on TH-cam of them playing it live at the Reading festival. I highly recommend it, if nothing else, just for the opportunity to see Maynard (the singer) out front with the band, killing it vocally. Nowadays he sings from the back or off to the side at shows.
    For early songs, Ænima, Swamp Song, and Hooker with A Penis are my jams. All time favorites are all off the same album: Parabola, Lateralus, The Grudge, and Schism. If you wanna cry (they’re incredible, just keep some tissues handy), Wings for Marie, Pt. 1 & 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2) are about Maynards’ mom and are sublime.
    I really enjoy your channel. Thanks for doing your thing!

    You can find the beat. But you have to work for it. You have to actively listen to Tool. Their polyrhythms are unmatched. It’s not off beat, it’s just different time signatures than what you are used to. I nod me head to Tool, but you gotta put in the time first. Believe me when I say it’s worth your time.

    "Was that it?" Yeah, typical response to a Tool song, even the ones that last 8+ minutes long. LOL 😂

    Hey bro....before I became a Tool fan....I just listened to hip hop and R&B.....Tool changed me....Tool isn't music to tap your foot to....its an experince....a journey....its music you just put on headphones.....close your eyes and let it take you for a ride.They do the all the change ups for a reason..... their music helps you make new connections in your brain...taking you outside the box of what you are use to.If you want a song that is more simple of theirs...try Tool-Sober or Tool- The Pot....but please be opened to dig more into their music....you just need to get use to their sound and how they put their music together.You wont regret it.Also dont keep trying to find the beat you will be disappointed lol... just relax and just listen for what it is.Stay with just the music and have the lyrics pulled up....STAY AWAY FROM THE OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEOS.....it will take away from the musical experince lol.Thanks for reacting to the greatest band to ever set foot on this planet!You won't find a bad song I promise.....they take lots of time and patience with their art...and it shows.All their songs are Masterpieces

    The guitar and drums only match every 6 measures. Follow bass on this one. Technically, in the end there are 3 time signatures going on to finally meet at the apex breakdown. But Yea, it's all done on purpose.
    Lateralus is another song they play with time signatures as well. It follows the fibbonocci sequence.

    Tool makes sense

    The guitar and drums sound off because they use a ton of syncopation ( emphasizing downbeats ). Also the guitar is carrying a lot of the rhythm which is backwards to a lot of western music

    Tool is other level rock music. This band is in a different plain of experience musically. Personally, I can't get enough of this band. Once they get in you, you will never listen to rock music the same way.

    I can't catch the beat!
    Really? I've never heard that about a Tool song before.
    They only change time signatures like 3 times in this song, easy man common.(lol)
    Don't act like you are drowning in the shallow end, it gets way deeper. Haha

    it's a polyrhythm until exactly 1/2 way through the track - at exactly 3m, it all lines up, and hits a major triad...god-tier math.
