I've been listening to tool for almost 20 years, and what makes me emotional is watching other people's faces when my favorite parts come up. It's those moments where people discover something that crashes into your ear drums like a sonic atom bomb that bring tears to my eyes.

Ok... here’s a nice twist on the relationship thing for you: Maynard dedicated the song Jambi (it’s in the 10,000 Days notes) to his only son, Devo. So... it’s a father speaking to his son. Love it ❤️

Jamel, I always enjoy your pauses and commentary, but watching your reaction to TooL is the best. I think most tool fans were pretty speechless / mind blown when they first experience it and grasp at the many layers of music transitions and lyrics. They still give me the feels even so many years later. Sometimes when I don't know what to listen to, I just put in your reactions. It's just great! You have an open ear for genres, and I love that about you! Keep on jammin!! 🎶

To me this song meant everything to me. When my son was born, he was jaundiced and put under those lights with the blindfold. I left one day to get my wife some food and was listening to this album while out and about. I had already spent a couple days staying up watching over my boy, making sure he rested well, and his blindfold stayed on. While out on my trip to get lunch, this song came on... Bare in mind, I've dabbled in all matters of debauchery, it seemed as tho everything came full circle that day. I was shown what laid before me and what could be. I wept. I listened to these words like they were gospel. It hit me like ton of bricks. Everything I had ever done was laid before me, and it was all washed away. I had got what I wanted... I got my son... and I had a true purpose in this life... it changed me. I am the king of my world and I control my destiny. My family is my world now... not my party life. Silence legion, stay out of my way

You're absolutely right about the tube in the mouth thing. That's what Adam is using to make that sound. It's an effect typically called the "Golden Throat", or "Talk Box" that mixes your guitar signal along with the signal of the tube in your mouth to effectively "talk" through your guitar. Peter Frampton (a great musician from the 70's) also used it a lot.

In the lyric he’s saying that he would wish away all that he has even at the THOUGHT of losing the other person for even just one day. (The person Maynard is speaking about in the song you might think, is a lover, it’s not, he wrote it about his son.) However tool has also said that some of their songs are ambiguous and can be interpreted in different ways by the listener. The “tube” you’re talking about that Adam Jones is using is called a talk box. My favorite Tool song.

This has been requested before but here it is again:
    Tool - Jimmy
    A Perfect Circle - Judith
Tool - Wings for Mary (parts 1 and 2) (also known as 10000 days)
Do it in single run with the lyrics video that have an explanation of the whole story. That could be really cool to see as a reaction. Also you are a sensible dude (I can see it on your reaction to Juan Gabriel songs, because I am equally sensitive) so for 10000 days maybe get some face tissues because it is a trip. It is a powerful song sang from the heart. Kind of reminds me to Amor Eterno since it is about a mother that has moved on to the next dimension. Even though, in tool fashion, lyrically and musically it is a very tool song.
There is also a fourth song from Maynard's other band Puscifer that completes the story. Cannot recall the name but Google search should give the answer.

I don't think it's necessary to do it all in one video, but should definitely be a series done all in the same night, he gets paid for the views and understandably this idea goes against his business model. Also, videos with explanations are horrible for first listens, they're too distracting for reactors. I'd say just have the man do a little research on what happened to Maynard's mother Judith.
Just to be clear though, Wings for Marie 1 and 2 SHOULD be listened to in the same video, no question.

    • @adammaynard5683

You forgot intermission before jimmy, it’s quick but adds to the entire progression.

    • @Wungolioth
      @Wungolioth 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@adammaynard5683 I love Intermission, it's so amazing how it mimics Jimmy in kind of an 8 bit video game way, almost like it describes Maynard's carefree life before, and then the song hits like a ton of bricks. I've been a proponent of combining them in the past, but the reactors tend to become so confused by Intermission, that they aren't prepared when Jimmy drops, they sort of lose focus.

Tool is always up to interpretation, to me this song is about my relationship with my self. Stories I tell myself about how I would always choose my inner voice over a life of luxury or some other material attachments. But even the voice telling these stories can drown out the subtle hum of my inner peace It's difficult to maintain contact with my true self when I'm just surrounded by the echoing voices of my worldly attachments, despite the mantras of denial I sing.

5 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.
2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:
4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.
5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.
6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,
7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.
8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.

But he was right about the Zap and Roger reference. Only instead of a guitar they used a keyboard to generate the sound. But when Peter Frampton , Joe Walsh, and Joe Perry were using them in the 70's they weren't in a pedal form factor. It wasn't until the late 80's/early 90's when the pedal form came round.

There may be a much darker meaning to this song but I’m not sure. Danny Carey is reportedly a satanist. Not sure about Maynard but he does seem to mock Jesus in a number of his songs.
Satan took Jesus up onto a mountain and offered him all the kingdoms of this world. This is a King’s view. He offers fame and fortune but the price is your soul. In one verse he says The Devil and his had me down, in love with the dark side I’d found, dabbling all the way down, up to my neck soon to drown.
It sounds like Satan offered Maynard all of the fame, fortune and lustful fulfillment of this world and he took it. He dabbled into the occult and got in over his head.
Now he has a son that changes his life so much that he say’s IF I could I would wish it all away. The fact that he say’s if i could implies that he cannot wish it all away. Satan does not let people out of their deals with him.
Many people don’t know this but Satan, before he fell, was in charge of music in Heaven. There are many stories of musicians selling their soul to Satan for fame and fortune. In a later verse Maynard say’s tempted the devil with my song and got what I wanted all along.
What convinced me that I am right about this is at the end of the so g he say’s silence legion, save your poison. There is a story of a man in the Bible possessed by many devils/demons. When questioned about the name of the demon possessing the man the devils refer to themselves as legion, for they were many.
I think this song may be about selling your soul to the devil and then wishing you could change it. Unfortunately it’s probably too late. Just a thought.

@@Ju5tB0b well said. Forcing/Prying open that third eye is sometimes necessary. Some people don't want to be bothered by truth and live in ignorance, and truth can definitely affect/shatter one's beliefs as well as enlighten for best, but some times people need to hear the truth whether they like it or not. Truth is truth. Truth is enlightenment. Not all enlightenment is pleasant. There's lots of things I wish I could un-learn/un- experience. But I still always want to learn more and experiencing hard, sad truths hasn't stopped me yet from wanting to know even more. I know Maynard doesn't like when people take his lyrics too literal and serious but he def has good messages we can all learn from. Just gotta listen. I saw the Stop Making Sense concert at The Greek in LA I believe it was in 83. Incredible show. Only matched by David Byrne’s current American Utopia show.

They have several near perfect albums all released in a row, The Bends, OK Computer, Kid A and Amnesiac. Remarkable live.
Highly inspired by them and also phenomenal live is Muse, though stick to the first few albums.

The part where you mentioned Zapp and Roger Troutman made me happy! You are referring to an instrument called a TalkBox. Basicly you throatsing into a tube the electronically distorts it. I am sure Roger and Maynard have different types, but they are both talkboxes!

    Here's the lyrics:
Here from the king's mountain view
Here from a wild dream come true
Feast like a sultan I do
On treasures and flesh, never few
But I, I would wish it all away
If I thought I'd lose you just one day
The devil and his had me down
In love with the dark side I'd found
Dabble in all the way down
Up to my neck soon to drown
But you changed that all for me
Lifted me up, turned me round
    So I
    I
    I
    I
    I would
    I would
    I would
    Wish this all away
Prayed like a martyr dusk to dawn
Begged like a hooker all night long
Tempted the devil with my song
And got what I wanted all along
    But I
    And I would
    If I could
    And I would
    Wish it away
    Wish it away
    Wish it all away
    Wanna wish it all away
No prize that could hold sway
    Or justify my giving away
    My center
So if I could I'd wish it all away
If I thought tomorrow would take you away
You're my peace of mind, my home, my center
I'm just trying to hold on
    One more day
    Dim my eyes
    Dim my eyes
Dim my eyes if they should compromise our fulcrum
Wants and needs divide me then I might as well be gone
    Shine on forever
    Shine on benevolent sun
    Shine on upon the broken
Shine until the two become one
    Shine on forever
    Shine on benevolent sun
    Shine on upon the severed
Shine until the two become one
    Divided I'm withering away
    Divided I'm withering away
Shine on upon the many, light our way
    Benevolent sun
    Breathe in union
    Breathe in union
    Breathe in union
    Breathe in union
    Breathe in union
    So as one survive
    Another day and season
    Silence, legion, save your poison
Silence, legion, stay out of my way

My friend. Music like this allows us to interpret what we need at that time. But, to me, this song is very pointed. To me, it is basically saying, when you find the one you love, the one that makes you whole, everything makes sense. At that peak, you know, you would change your life, no matter how strong your demons are, to ensure your make this persons life whole and in turn, makes yours whole. You would give up all for this person/life. Keep at it my friend. Much respect.
