To me this song meant everything to me. When my son was born, he was jaundiced and put under those lights with the blindfold. I left one day to get my wife some food and was listening to this album while out and about. I had already spent a couple days staying up watching over my boy, making sure he rested well, and his blindfold stayed on. While out on my trip to get lunch, this song came on... Bare in mind, I've dabbled in all matters of debauchery, it seemed as tho everything came full circle that day. I was shown what laid before me and what could be. I wept. I listened to these words like they were gospel. It hit me like ton of bricks. Everything I had ever done was laid before me, and it was all washed away. I had got what I wanted... Jamel, I always enjoy your pauses and commentary, but watching your reaction to TooL is the best. I think most tool fans were pretty speechless / mind blown when they first experience it and grasp at the many layers of music transitions and lyrics. They still give me the feels even so many years later. Sometimes when I don't know what to listen to, I just put in your reactions. It's just great! You have an open ear for genres, and I love that about you! Keep on jammin!! 🎶
I want to watch your reaction to every tool song. The more you hear, the better it is and a deeper appreciation for their talents! Especially Danny on drums!
You're absolutely right about the tube in the mouth thing. That's what Adam is using to make that sound. It's an effect typically called the "Golden Throat", or "Talk Box" that mixes your guitar signal along with the signal of the tube in your mouth to effectively "talk" through your guitar. Peter Frampton (a great musician from the 70's) also used it a lot.
I saw them in February here in Aus before COVID-19 consumed everything. This song along with Pnuema and Tempest were the jewels of the night. Jambi cuts through you like a knife live. They change it up to elevate it beyond the studio version.
In the lyric he’s saying that he would wish away all that he has even at the THOUGHT of losing the other person for even just one day. (The person Maynard is speaking about in the song you might think, is a lover, it’s not, he wrote it about his son.) However tool has also said that some of their songs are ambiguous and can be interpreted in different ways by the listener. The “tube” you’re talking about that Adam Jones is using is called a talk box. My favorite Tool song.
Getting to experience these songs with you is such a special thing. I know that by now you’re a full-fledged fan and love TOOL as much as anyone else, but man, hearing it with you for the first time is such a gratifying experience for someone who has been a fan for two decades. Thank you, bro.
Tool is always up to interpretation, to me this song is about my relationship with my self. Stories I tell myself about how I would always choose my inner voice over a life of luxury or some other material attachments. But even the voice telling these stories can drown out the subtle hum of my inner peace It's difficult to maintain contact with my true self when I'm just surrounded by the echoing voices of my worldly attachments, despite the mantras of denial I sing.
By far my favourite track on this album. "Prayed like a martyr dusk to dawn. Begged like a hooker all night long." Adam's use of the voice box was made famous in the 70's by Peter Frampton on "Do you feel like we do" and in the 80's by Mathias Jabs of The Scorpions on the track "The Zoo".
At the end when Maynard says, "Silence, legion, save your poison. Silence, legion, stay out of my way" Many people think he's talking to Tool fans about staying out of his personal and family life.
Mark 5:1-9 King James Version (KJV) 5 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. 2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: 4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. 5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. 6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him, 7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. 8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. 9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.
I don’t think he’s talking about the fans, I think he’s talking about the demons of temptation and demonic people and forces that have power in this world
"here from the king's mountain view, here from the wild dream come true." he's on top of the world, living a wild dream. countless dreams born from wealth, and he would wish it all away if the alternative was losing his son. i think maynard has come a long way as a person. his son, and the death of his mom, i think fundamentally changed him.
The LOVE of money is the root of all evil. Not money itself. Greed. The love of having money for its own sake. And this has never rung more true than in the current political and socioeconomic circumstances.
I think it goes even deeper. I think this song is about death and losing a loved one and what you would be willing to give up just to spend one more day with that person. RIP Kory Moore.
💚 my fav (at the moment) "The devil and his had me down In love with the dark side i found" "But you changed all that for me Lifted me up, turned me around" "You, my peace of mind, my all, my center" "Shine on benevolent sun. Shine down upon the broken" "Shine down upon the many Light our way, benevolent son" ... I mean... Just... Fantastic. And tool never gets old. Been in their army for about 20 yrs now. Really enjoying your reaction to them.
Lol that is the same effects pedal it’s called a “ talk box” it’s a foot switch pedal on the ground that has a rubber tube that goes up to a mic stand and is plugged into his stomp box which is connected to his guitar really cool pedal... a lot of good guitarist use it to make the guitar have that original sound! Fun to mess around with!
But he was right about the Zap and Roger reference. Only instead of a guitar they used a keyboard to generate the sound. But when Peter Frampton , Joe Walsh, and Joe Perry were using them in the 70's they weren't in a pedal form factor. It wasn't until the late 80's/early 90's when the pedal form came round.
Brett Marlar sweet I was born in mid 70’s so i didn’t pick up guitar until early 90’s but didn’t realize those went back that far thanks I am interested in some of the earlier forms now and how the tones are from that era
@@porkchopzmeat3099 I was born in October '74. Started playing in '86. Wasn't long after that when I started noticing people mak8ng their guitars "talk" with wah pedals, and a friend of mine told me about the Talk Box somewhere around '89 or '90. I asked every guitar shop in the Denver area, and they all said that it wasn't available to buy. That something like that needed to be custom built.
Great song! I believe this was the only studio song that Danny used his Paiste kit on. I’ve always loved this song. Before, I never got Tool, but after many listens, I’m starting to understand them and like them. Ticks and Leeches is a great one for drums, but the title track to Fear Inoculum and Invincible are also great ones.

Just so you know,,,,the context of the song is pretty frightening, but they have a way of getting into some seriously deep issues anyway and try to open people's eyes to subjects that aren't always pleasant, but are of super importance.
@@Ju5tB0b well said. Forcing/Prying open that third eye is sometimes necessary. Some people don't want to be bothered by truth and live in ignorance, and truth can definitely affect/shatter one's beliefs as well as enlighten for best, but some times people need to hear the truth whether they like it or not. Truth is truth. Truth is enlightenment. Not all enlightenment is pleasant. There's lots of things I wish I could un-learn/un- experience. But I still always want to learn more and experiencing hard, sad truths hasn't stopped me yet from wanting to know even more. I know Maynard doesn't like when people take his lyrics too literal and serious but he def has good messages we can all learn from. Just gotta listen. This was one of the first songs my son decided he really liked when he was like 5 or 6 ( he was listening to my iPOD in the backseat of the car). I figured he'd be as much of a music lover as his dad.
It’s unreal that the vocals and melodies are written after the music is done. The lines that MJK finds in those notes is unreal! I would never hear those melodies in a song like this
To me Jambi is incredible song because you can listen to it as a breakup song or falling in love song, works both way. Its prolly not about that but thats my impression of it.
Jambi is my daughters favorite Tool song. Teaching her the ways of Tool at a young age. Can you please react to Swamp Song and Flood off of the Undertow album.
@@jeraldcandelario3881 very late response but I think it’s praying and begging for (whatever this song is about) to never leave him and stay along forever. Some people think it’s about his son. When I hear it I think about my relationship with spirituality and god. I interpret it as I hope my knowledge and relationship with god/universe/divine never leaves me and that it only grows strongrr

Loving your reactions man, follow the Maynard trail and you’ll never be disappointed, truly an amazing lyricist. Some of his Perfect Circle stuff is definitely worth a look. Much love from Australia brother 💪
There may be a much darker meaning to this song but I’m not sure. Danny Carey is reportedly a satanist. Not sure about Maynard but he does seem to mock Jesus in a number of his songs. Satan took Jesus up onto a mountain and offered him all the kingdoms of this world. This is a King’s view. He offers fame and fortune but the price is your soul. In one verse he says The Devil and his had me down, in love with the dark side I’d found, dabbling all the way down, up to my neck soon to drown. It sounds like Satan offered Maynard all of the fame, fortune and lustful fulfillment of this world and he took it. He dabbled into the occult and got in over his head. Now he has a son that changes his life so much that he say’s IF I could I would wish it all away. The fact that he say’s if i could implies that he cannot wish it all away. Satan does not let people out of their deals with him. Many people don’t know this but Satan, before he fell, was in charge of music in Heaven. There are many stories of musicians selling their soul to Satan for fame and fortune. In a later verse Maynard say’s tempted the devil with my song and got what I wanted all along. What convinced me that I am right about this is at the end of the so g he say’s silence legion, save your poison. There is a story of a man in the Bible possessed by many devils/demons. When questioned about the name of the demon possessing the man the devils refer to themselves as legion, for they were many. I think this song may be about selling your soul to the devil and then wishing you could change it. Unfortunately it’s probably too late. Just a thought. found, dabbling all the way down, up to
Great reaction as always. Maynard’s lyrics are always thought provoking. Mix that with the musicianship of the band, and you have yourself some mind-blowing music.

If I'm nit mistaken, the song was about his mother and her illness when he was child. Jambi was the genie from PeeWee Hermans playhouse and how he is asking Jambi to save his mother. At least part of the song was about the mom, others could be about his son.
They have several near perfect albums all released in a row, The Bends, OK Computer, Kid A and Amnesiac. Remarkable live. Highly inspired by them and also phenomenal live is Muse, though stick to the first few albums.
This is one of my favorites. They play it live almost every concert. It is incredible. And the meaning of the verses, good for the soul. It's important to not forget what's important in life, and that material possessions are not everything.
I’d love to hear you react to some Talking Heads. “Once in a Lifetime” changed the course of my life when I was in my late teens/early 20’s. I decided then and there that I was not going to wake up some day and and yell “My God what have I done”. I am 60 today and I am still grateful.
I saw the Stop Making Sense concert at The Greek in LA I believe it was in 83. Incredible show. Only matched by David Byrne’s current American Utopia show.

During the guitar solo The effect Adam is using you talking about is called a talk box. It has a tube the sound you guitar goes though instead of traveling through your amp and it goes into your mouth and into a microphone, and how you move your mouth changes the way the sound of your guitar sounds. The 10,000 Days title has been interpreted by most Tool philosophers to be a reference to the approximate period of time between singer Maynard James Keenan's mom becoming incapacitated by a stroke when Maynard was 11 years old, and the time she died in June, 2003.

TOOL songs are really complex, in every sense, take your time and listen to their albums from start to finish, it will be a journey
Yes indeed👍🏾
That's right, I don't understand why try to compare Muse with them...
@@davidzamora9510 Muse? Seriously? NFW Blasphemy
Muse? Who's comparing the two? No comparison...
In other channels usually say that, they also comment that Tool is not so good as Muse... wtf (?
Tool defiantly love their complex time signatures and polly rhythms that’s for shore.
7:07 = Everyone their first time hearing that riff / note drop \m/ •_• \m/
Love the videos brother!!
Big facts
Yup fav part of song
I climax everytime I hear it
Getting to experience these songs with you is such a special thing.
I know that by now you’re a full-fledged fan and love TOOL as much as anyone else, but man, hearing it with you for the first time is such a gratifying experience for someone who has been a fan for two decades.
Thank you, bro.
"Silence legion,
Save your poison
Silence legion, stay out of my way!"
The most emotional thing I've ever heard expressed in musical/lyrical form.
Yeah, brings tears for me also.
I think he's alluding to the conquering of Rome lol
Agreed... I have schizophrenia, and that speaks to me in volumes.
Jambi made me tear up in the first row when i saw them live. Out of all the songs played that night jambi stood out the most
Tool is always up to interpretation, to me this song is about my relationship with my self.
Finally Jambi. My favorite Tool song. Schism is another great one.
Good ear! You got it man, just like Zapp and Roger Troutman, he's using a talk box. This song is So Ruff, so Tuff and has more bounce to the ounce!
Yes!
Yup Vocorder is the tech term and it was made famous by Peter Framton on the song The Way I Do ;)
@@Coyotecyb Good call!
i was gonna comment but knew some one called it :p hope he sees it to know he pretty much called it
@@Brettin ha, me too my man.
Or at least the critics.
Or the bible. Mark 5:9
Mark 5:1-9 King James Version (KJV)
5 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.
2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:
4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.
5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.
6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,
7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.
8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.
9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.
I don’t think he’s talking about the fans, I think he’s talking about the demons of temptation and demonic people and forces that have power in this world
I absolutely love this band and this song, and I absolutely adore your reaction to it!
💚 my fav (at the moment)
"The devil and his had me down
In love with the dark side i found"
"But you changed all that for me
Lifted me up, turned me around"
"You, my peace of mind, my all, my center"
"Shine on benevolent sun.
Shine down upon the broken"
"Shine down upon the many
Light our way, benevolent son"
... I mean... Just... Fantastic.
And tool never gets old. Been in their army for about 20 yrs now.
Really enjoying your reaction to them.
Thank you 😢😢😢😅😅😅😅😅
Lol that is the same effects pedal it’s called a “ talk box” it’s a foot switch pedal on the ground that has a rubber tube that goes up to a mic stand and is plugged into his stomp box which is connected to his guitar really cool pedal... a lot of good guitarist use it to make the guitar have that original sound!
Brett Marlar hahaha my first pedal was a rat distortion pedal and a crybaby wah pedal got those two pedals just to try to play some sabbath songs lol
Oh I forgot to mention my first guitar was a pos hondo les Paul copy lol ya I was a broke struggling musician back then
It's like you're a natural Tool fan. You just get it. ❤❤❤ this was about his baby boy. 😊
Great song! I believe this was the only studio song that Danny used his Paiste kit on. I’ve always loved this song. Before, I never got Tool, but after many listens, I’m starting to understand them and like them. Ticks and Leeches is a great one for drums, but the title track to Fear Inoculum and Invincible are also great ones.
lets talk about that fire hoodie.
Not sure if its been suggested yet but “Prison Sex” by Tool. crazy song
Just Bob 2nd that and the music vid if you really wanna get creeped out
Definitely should listen to that AND watch the video. Adam Jones isn't just a great musician. He's a great artist in general. I've always wanted to own one of his stop motion puppets. Especially the one from Ænima and Sober. Good suggestion btw!!
@@SSGSativa He is amazing....those puppets are freaking sweet. I have always wanted one as well. lol I look forward to seeing more of your channel. You are a very good host
If you ever see one of Adam Jones' stop motion puppets for sale, hmu IMMEDIATELY on this post (If you don't already buy it right away, lol) Have a great one, dude!
I've been listening since day one, I'm 50 years old. From Boston, remember when HJY ,94.1 Providence played Tool in 92..Legends since 92.. Justin is so good on bass..
I love the intensity of this song. That laser beam stare from darkened entity is equally intimidating and and awe inspiring.

Wings for Marie pt 1 and 2!!! Best songwriting Tool has ever done.
Whenever anyone has asked about Tool, this is the kick in the teeth I share with them.

It’s unreal that the vocals and melodies are written after the music is done. The lines that MJK finds in those notes is unreal! I would never hear those melodies in a song like this
The intro to this song literally shook the arena i was in when i seen them.

Yes to Swamp Song, it makes me think of my ex. 🤣
Prayed like a martyr dusk to dawn
Begged like a hooker all night long
Tempted the devil with my song
And got what I wanted all along
My favorite verse
Im curious, what did he mean by that verse?
@@jeraldcandelario3881 very late response but I think it’s praying and begging for (whatever this song is about) to never leave him and stay along forever. Some people think it’s about his son. When I hear it I think about my relationship with spirituality and god. I interpret it as I hope my knowledge and relationship with god/universe/divine never leaves me and that it only grows strongrr
Even later response: imagine your wife in the hospital giving birth. What would you offer to give up to make sure both made it safe?
I'd recommend Panic Room by Silent Planet. Having grown up with a military father with multiple deployments and now having one under my belt, the lyrics really hit home.
Jamal, when Covid passes and Tool comes to your town go see them live I promise It will be an experience you will never ever forget I've been following TOOL for 25 years now I remember every show I have seen. Seen them seven times they truly take you on a journey. Watching you experience Jambi brought tears to my eyes. The song is about his son. They are to me a band in their own genre, such as TOOL, you'll either love 'em or you'll hate 'em, hoping you will love Them! I believe these following songs by them are the best for an introduction...And the cherry on top for me, would be all 4 in that format.

Paranoid Android- A possible still or lyric (official video too distracting!)

I was thinking Decks Dark might be a good intro, even though it’s a modern Radiohead sound...
Tool and radiohead are my 2 fav bands hands down. I always play reckoner or weird fishes to someone who never heard radiohead. Its a band that if people hear the wrong song first they wont give it a second chance. I think in rainbows from start to finish is the album to get ppl interested. KID A is my all time fav but idthink its the right album to get ppl into the band.

The 10,000 Days title has been interpreted by most Tool philosophers to be a reference to the approximate period of time between singer Maynard James Keenan's mom becoming incapacitated by a stroke when Maynard was 11 years old, and the time she died in June, 2003.
