That, "instrument," was a Gibson Les Paul guitar played by Adam Jones, through a talk box effect peddle. The talk box effect was made popular by Peter Frampton in the 1970's.
"wow" enough said. Whenever I listen to music, I'm listening to primarily Tool. No matter how many times i listen to their music, I always feel the wow❤ best band ever.
@@nznige10000 days might be the album I've listened to the most. If you are going for a hard run or hitting the gym hard, the pacing of the songs just builds you up and activates beast mode to push past where you'd stop.
The climax of this song is just mind blowing.....and to think about the fact that this song is not even in the top 10 of Tool's catalogue to most hardcore fans!!!!
it (one player of each instrument) often means bands have to compensate in other ways, which TOOL does perfectly with its soundscapes and use of effects
The “instrument” is called a talk box. It is connected to Adam’s guitar, it amplifies sound through a driver, about as small as an earphone driver, into a tube which goes into his mouth and what you hear is the reverb (echo) of the guitar from his mouth into a microphone
It took me years and years of owning this album on CD to discover how great this particular song was. That realisation was more than a decade ago and I still listen to it for my workouts and to decompress from work
saw them november last year. they played this song and instead of the talk box segment alex lifeson came out and played that bit with his guitar. it was wild. won't ever get to see that again.
32 year fan of Tool, no one else compares. My favorite band and the best band of my lifetime! Wait till you hear them in concert! Have you watched "Pneuma", Vic Firth cameras? You have to do it next if you haven't already. Cameras are on Danny Carey, Tool's drummer. It's one of the best videos on TH-cam.
Great reaction! Lyric videos or a separate window with lyrics is generally recommended for Tool. Many more songs to go: Stinkfist, Schism, Lateralus, Forty-six & two, Hooker with a Penis, Aenima, Vicarious, Eulogy, Pushit, Sober, Wings for Marie, among others. 😂😉 Welcome to the ToolArmy!
Tool is just such a tight band with lots to dig into. Plenty of interesting stuff to decipher here. Sometimes you have to just focus on one part, like the crunchy bass Justin Chancellor brings. It's a great experience to piece together the elements that go into their songs.
Just stumbled onto your channel. Subscribed. Great format. The talk box works like a little closed box speaker cabinet that sends the guitar sound through a rubber hose up to the guitar players mouth. The sound is then controlled with the mouth ( just like talking ) in front of a microphone. Good shit.
That instrument is a guitar but he is using a talk box with it. It's hard to explain but if you search talk box on TH-cam, I'm sure you'll find someone showing you how it works and playing with it.
Most rock and roll and modern music you hear on the radio is done in 4/4 time where there's 4 beats to a measure. Tool will sometimes use several different time signatures in a single song, which is what I think you're talking about not being able to catch 1. ;) The Pot is a great song from Tool if you haven't heard that one yet. I think it's all in 4/4.
Jambi’s the tool-iest Tool! The heavy riff, polyrhythms, time sig, soaring vocals… Eight minutes goes by like three. All audio is guitar, bass, percussion, vocals… with a sh-ton of electronic effects and pedals, etc. They’re studio rats. Savants. There’s no shame pulling up the lyrics on your phone or something. But I love the true immersion you're doing. Let the lyrics seep in over time. It makes the song stronger and evolve naturally. “Eulogy” still takes my breath away.
Agree 100%. I know everyone is always screaming lyrics…I think it’s too much on a first listen. Enjoy the Sonic experience then if you want to dive into lyrics and meanings feel free to
you're quite right when you say its like a voice but distorted about the vox vocoder its linked to the guitar and a mic, imagine a wah pedal you can literally wah wah into and it gives you the sound

Legend has it that Adam consulted directly with Frampton for tips on how to use it.

THIS is how a song reaction should go. I am surprised you didnt have an intro, and didnt stop the song to leave thoughts. Kudos 🤙🏻

Top 4 for me, but, yeah, it's usually not in most of the Tool Army's top 10.
Some truly understand how amazing they are having only 1 guitarist, bassist, drummer, and singer.
That is really amazing
