      Undertow is my personal favorite. So much grainy, gritty and filthy sound...not their best songs per say but the most "Tool sounding" album imo.

    Also Smoke, if you love that early raw shiz, you guys have to do Jerk-off live from Opiate. You won’t believe Maynard on this one...

      Yes, do a two-fer. There are two live songs that lead into each other on Opiate: Cold and Ugly and Jerk-off. Do them as a one reaction and get your face blown the eff off.

    I'm getting addicted to the Tool Tuesdays LOL Every Tuesday when I get up I take a look to see what you are reacting to :-) Eventually you are going to do all of them, but I think you are already prepared for Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned. As many people have told you, watching the videos or even the lyrics on first Tool listens is not the best idea as they distract you from the music. But in this case the lyrics I believe are a must. I remember perfectly when Rosetta Stoned came out, hearing it for the first time and thinking: WTF is this shit? Ha ha ha! We didn't have the lyrics then. I thought it was just a disjointed jam with a collection of rejected riffs. Didn't like it at first listen as it is so... strange! Then I started appreciating it. Then I saw them playing it live. Now I'd say it's the most fun Tool song to play on guitar!

    My interpretation of all Tool albums:
    Opiate - That destructive high of youth, false religion, bad behavior that is killing you but you are caught up in the illusion/feeling.
    Undertow: The high wears off, you are in a terrible dark place, you're addicted and realize that everything you thought, those destructive behaviors have brought you down and you are drowning.
    Aenima - Anima = the soul, enema = clean out the shit. This album is about trying to get rid of all those terrible things and start cleaning out your body and soul, ultimately trying to find a new enlightenment.
    Salival - hungry for more, for something to feed your being.
    Lateralus - lateral = line, us. Line us up, get us going straight. Look for something higher and more meaningful than our past selves. Reach up and out and beyond.
    10,000 Days - the trial. You are on the right path but nothing good is easy. If you really mean to change, something better than you have to earn it, have to be tested to be worthwhile.
    Fear Inoculum - Now that you have gone through the fires, you can look back and reflect on your life. You are immune to those old vices and immune to future fear because of your trials and soul alignment.
    Next Album? - I suspect maybe something about finally dying or going to that final stage of enlightenment/being. Hard to say.

    • @ChaseVonnegut
      @ChaseVonnegut 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Michael McKane Third Eye = Opened. I am not sure if this was exactly their intent, but this is sort of an archetypal story, like "The Heros Journey". Tool is relatable and grows as we did because it talks about very deeply inherent aspects of life shared by mostly everyone. When Maynard talks in interviews he often talks about that old grudge, drug etc and outgrowing it, evolving/changing becoming stronger etc. I hope they get to finish the story before this shit hole goes up in flames.

    • @KlockoFett
      @KlockoFett 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Damn. That's an awesome interpretation. Something I never really thought about much before. I like it!

    • @plexus
      @plexus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Chase Vonnegut ... fun interpretation... but I absolutely assure you... with 100% absolute certainty... TOOL in no way planned out their catalog to have any sort of meaning... no cohesive thread or plan connecting album to album. They finish a project... release and tour extensively... then when they’re ready, they go into the studio and start again on something new with a completely clean slate.
      What you’re hearing and extracting from their body of work to make this sort of story or overall concept connecting their albums is simply the growth of the artists personally over time... they work hard, completing a solid piece of work, and it’s like a snapshot of where they are in their life... then they tour for 5-6 years... maybe 13 lol... and when they start on their next project with a completely clean slate, they have grown in many many ways, and in short, they are different people. Also, they are very introspective, cerebral, intelligent and sincere people, so they evolve in a way that is maturing and in a direction of positivity. So with each snapshot in their body of work, that growth shines through.
      You sort of broke down this archetypal progression in a way that makes sense to you personally, and probably reflects your own growth in life... not to say that I don’t see where your coming from in your interpretation. I totally do...
      But I just know with 100% certainty... even from listening to extensive interviews with the band members on how their process works and how they approach their albums and coming into the studio again after not having written anything new for years... that they absolutely did not plan out any grand scheme or map or framework to follow from album to album... basically the 3 composers of the group get together and write the instrumentals (Danny, Adam, and Justin, obviously) and when they’re good and ready, Maynard comes in and lays down his magic and elevates their work into a whole new level, and we get the beauty that is TOOL. Just because they’re just about the deepest band anybody has heard or will hear in 100 years doesn’t mean we have to apply any more depth to their work and “overthink and over analyze” it or imbue it with this sort of expectation that it is just pure occult secrecy and hidden messages... It’s deep as hell, sure... but it really is a lot more straight forward and attainable than what a lot of TOOL fans like to imagine... the fans that are just way too fanatic about them to the point where they practically think that they are some sort of prophets sent to earth to encode some sort of secret framework to enlightenment, and that if you could just crack the code, you’d understand the meaning of life, the universe, and everything (42)... well... they’re one heavy LSD trip away from Manson listening to The Beatles’ white album and coming up with the Helter Skelter delusion... they’re just human... incredibly talented, introspective, intelligent and artistic humans... but humans all the same. And all you need to do is listen to their actual thoughts to understand how they just approach their work as making music they they love, and that they, themselves, think that a lot of their fans just go way overboard on the whole “search for meaning” in their work.
      That being said, it IS fun to delve deep into their music and find your own interpretation that really rings true to yourself... and that is really what they want their fans to do to begin with... they don’t want their fans to seek out some hidden message that they intentionally encoded into their work... they want their fans to connect with their music on a personal level and find a deep and resonant meaning that is personal and singular to the listener. That is why Maynard writes in a very archetypal way. It’s meant to be universal and something that anyone can draw out truth from no matter what circumstances they come from or whatever way their experiences may color the lenses through which they hear and interpret the music and lyrics.
      Sorry... that was long... but I hope this changes how you see TOOL’s music and you can even appreciate it on a whole new level and not worry about what the music is specifically INTENDED to mean and instead, focus on what the music means to you on a personal level.

    • @ChaseVonnegut
      @ChaseVonnegut 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@plexus dang bro, I said MY interpretation and that they probably didn't set out to do this haha. I know they are very organic. And I'm not trying to decode Maynard or find any hidden meaning, he is just a dude and they are just dudes. I know he just sings about where is at in his life and that reflects in the songs. My point being that the progression of the album content also seems to mirror a pretty common human experience progression. Not saying that Maynard said "ah, I am going to make the albums follow this archetypal story" he IS the archetypal story, we are all the archetypal story, that is why we relate because it is a very real commonality of human growth over a long period of time. Maynard is just being real with where he is at, and I am the one equating that to some deeper human experience shared by many. :)

    The song begins @ 4:20 seconds in... and he's saying "water"...
    ... AND this is what he means by "This ground is not the rock I thought it to Be"... I have a picture of a Rock I found ... I have several of these... different types... this one has Gluttony that I recognize from Full Metal Alchemist... and NO, this isn't a prank, I didn't carve this or draw this on to the rock.

    I'm with Smokey on this one. This album and The Opiate EP are my favorites from Tool. I love all their albums but I'm a softie for this one. Been requesting this one for a while..the day is finally here. I love Danny's drumming in all their songs but this is heavy and was the song that sealed it in my eyes that DC is in a league of his own. Great reaction! 🤘

    Great choice gentlemen! Tool's early stuff had a lot more rage and anger than later albums. Opiate, Undertow, Aenima. Few songs on Lateralus as well, but that album, imo, is when they started evolving from faster heavy riffs and punch you in the face vocals, to a more intricate, heavy, less angry sound. Which is good because Maynard can get after it and no way he could sing like that forever. Lol! You guys have had only a small sample of his ability to belt out an angry note. 😍 There is a "best of screams" by Maynard on youtube. Look it up. His voice, when hes pissed or getting after it during a song, is amazing. Keep up the reaction vids. My suggestion for next song. "My Third Eye" "Hooker with a P." Or "Bottom" guest vocalist on "Bottom" 😉

    Great Job! Hope that other video makes it out someday.
    You mentioned "props to the producer". That would be Sylvia Massey. She's legendary. Not super well known, but a legendary producer to those who really know their shit. There's a few videos of her giving tours of her personal studio. Tool references, Prince references, System of a Down references, Vintage mics, etc. As music guys, you should look those up. Super interesting to people like "us".

  • @Fakename70
    @Fakename70 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Since y’all brought it up, “the Producer”, Sylvia Massey has her own TH-cam channel with video clips of the recording sessions from the album. You’re welcomed.

    dear talkers,
    a gret thing is, that when I'm watching you first-timing a tool song, I also listen to it much more focused than in other situations. I shure heard them all focused too, but especially the old ones are somewhat long ago. thank you for that.
    I dont think I would try to rank music in general and tool in particular, although I catch myself often wanting to do the same.
    To me Tool has absolutly not one song dropping down from the rest. The only other band I can say that about is King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and I'm very happy ypu discovered them already.
    peace out

    I thought for sure that you were ending the video at 13:15, like most reactors would because they are just pumping out reaction videos. Thank you so much for actually going on to talk about your experiences and thank your brains for retaining it. Kind of shows how much you are into it and how much this day or rather this band has changed how you perceive music, I'm loving it!
    Sucks that the last one got taken down, maybe it will come back, I am definitely going to double check, thanks for the heads up!
    Also, I noticed that you do not pause the songs anymore. Why? Is it because you'd rather listen to it in one take? I think the only negative thing about you pausing is the background music you add, which is fine at the start and the analysis, but rips one out of the song if it is played when you pause in the middle of the track you are reacting to. Again, it is not bad that you don't pause anymore, since you talk about everything in the song anyway, but I wonder why you stopped doing it.
    Edit: Also, thank you so much for doing these. (I even liked the video! ;)

    Undertow was my favorite album for years. It was their first commercial success, and it was the first album most of us experienced. I still love the raw power and intensity of the earlier albums, with the continuing growth and pure musical talent of the later album shining through. I will promise you this, there is at least one Tool song that speaks to you personally, and will make you feel like it was written for you.
