No wonder this was a nightmare to put in, this is by far the most impressive use of dynamic music I've ever seen in anything, period. I don't even want to magine how much work went into making sure the music loops correctly and transitions to the next part when the player hits it, it all feels so seamless it's insane.
One of the main tricks they seem to use is just having an extended shred solo that is super long that occupies space when the player lags. And there's seemingly a different solo for each section. It probably loops at some point but because it's a shred solo most casual listeners won't notice as much. There are a lot of notes to deal with to attempt to discern a repeating hook. If you hear shredding without vocals it's most likely the player lagging behind the next checkpoint.

But in this case it's probably a studio edit of smaller sections. What they probably did is just had the technical end of the run where it links back into the beginning be super ambiguous which is easy to do with shred because of the amount of notes. In music we typically learn to accentuate beginnings and endings so it would be the opposite of what you typically do in music for a purpose. Alot of people who hate shred as a genre refer to it as "wanking" because they feel it has a lot of notes and not very much substance to them. So I guess here wanking is technically the goal.

They have some genuine geniuses at Remedy. Between this and the Ashtray maze, they do crazy work to put these long musical segments together, tying the different parts to triggers of where the PC is to have the music not clip itself and being coherent set pieces. I think this chapter is seriously the best part of any of their games for how on point it is. Firstly, you have Alan being messed with by the Dark place, you have Door and Odin and Tor guiding him to help him escape, the ferry in the Bright Falls part is a beautiful touch. It’s all very meta but in a very beautiful way. I have nothing but praise for everything they did creating this absolute masterpiece

It's REALLY useful too! I've been sneaking around through most of Alan's section(I don't think Saga can actually sneak past enemies; they seem to always notice her, flashlight or not.) and have SO MANY resources saved up as a result lmao.
The soundtrack for this game is incredible. It really goes above and beyond what most soundtracks do, which is just to set the tone. The chapter songs clue you into so much of what's going on in the story and characters, and can be interpreted in multiple ways.
Someone in chat asked what writer could write themselves out of the Dark Place. Tolkien. However obvious, it's legitimately the answer. Lord of the Rings essentially climaxes with a deus ex machina yet it's narratively satisfying in how he presented it thematically and makes sense. Beyond that, the persistent themes of fighting against despair and evil no matter how hopeless it might be or seem. Then add in being a WW1 veteran compared to Alan having never used a gun before, and he would break the Dark Presence like a glowstick and probably accidentally create a benevolent deity in the process.
And if he'd write positive stuff, the Dark Presence would twist it into something horrible, like it did with Thomas Zane when he tried to revive Barbara Jagger.
