Thanks for the video and all your advice , I'm getting a Garrett Detector (as after your great review it looks so easy to use) and I'm looking forward going out and having some fun finding alsorts of things. Permission to detect is important I know and a few people to ask who own land but I will have a good practice at home first and remember to remove my ring! I'm really intrested in the local history of where I live and it will be fantastic to have my own collection of coins and belt buckles and thimbles just to think I'm a part of the story, It would be nice to find rare things but I pick up so much litter when dog walking (as I don't like to see where I live looking a mess) that a few hundred bottle caps before my first coin wouldn't matter to much. Thanks again and look forward to another great video.
haha you know I still detect my own ring 3 years later, hope you find some good stuff, enjoy the fresh air and the peace and everything else is a bonus :-)
45 years ago i got a detector and didnt know a thing. One of the first things i did was take a gold ring and buried and then listened to the tone the detector made when passed over it. Then when i went to tbe beach i heard the same tone and started digging. I dug and dug and dug and finally reached what made the tone....a steel radial tire! Only used the detector a few more times because my husband stopped wanting to go to tbe beach. (Anytime i found fun stuff to do he usually wanted to stop doing it. Odd man. He is my ex husband now)
Thank you for this video. I am beginning and have gotten so discouraged. I appreciate you putting this out there. I just thought it was me. Ty so much.
Please dont be discouraged, I myself went through this after seeing everyone with what seemed to be gold finds every week! We all find lots of rubbish and sometimes we find cool stuff, good luck and keep going :-)
OK I CONFESS........ 35 years of detecting, OMG what have I missed? Way back when, I was for coin and ring size targets, Discrimination set up high, dig NO large targets. I'M STILL, being stupid. Yet where I live now is U.S. Civil War area (1860-1865) I could be missing belt buckles, artillery shells, large relic's. Bad habits are hard to break, your video's help in developing good habits for better success. Thanks
Thanks for the sub Darren!! Youve chosen to start the best hobby in the world, join my group on FB if you want any advice or help on metal detecting :-)
It’s great to get help from Beautiful young ladies. I just started watching some metal detecting videos, so this is all new to me so it’s great to see helpful posts. Thanks for sharing
I have been detecting for 8 months, and did all the same things. Persistance, watching youtube, asking advice on forums, or facebook. Also looking for a detecting mate/buddy can be a tremendous help, and doubles the fun. I am on my 4th detector now.....addictive hobby :-)
+greg w. Yes me and twiggy were very lucky to have each other and both starting at the same time was great for us! Do you still detect your spade etc hhaha
You are awesome! What a cool hobby, I can't wait to jump into it. You have some great useful beginer advice, I can't wait to start exploring the Northern California Gold Rush area. Keep up the great work and cool videos!
What you said about detecting yourself reminded me of Bernard Manning's old joke about the Irish fella who took up metal detecting. He dug halfway to Australia before realising he had steel toe caps on his boots
@@DiggerDawn I thought it was Manchester when I first heard you, but heard you mention Rochdale in a video. I am from Birmingham, but live in Canada. Loving watching your videos. I am new to detecting, found lots of junk, and a few modern coins so far with my Garrett 400i.
Great Video. I started detecting about the same time that You two began posting videos and I have learned at about the exact same pace. It was fun to see in your early videos the excitement to find anything old that was not rubbish and I could and still do related to your excitement. Thanks for the videos.
Detecting One's Self....got to spread the word on that one. Your info on this vid is great. It helps beginners like me help other beginners. Thanx Much !
Great video Dawn! When I started detecting this Spring I had one of these mistake experiences. I found a nice target and pinpointed it. Dug my hole and settled in for the search. My Garrett carrot told me my target was closer so I widened my hole only to get the same results. Once again I dig and get the same thing. Puzzled,I start to wonder if I'm onto some sort of rare and elusive silver worm? The light finally came on and I remembered I have had both knees replaced!
Nice one Dawn, as you say we all have and still do all of these mistakes. I've never detected with steel toecaps but wear a ring on every occasion. Even after many years of detecting we'll still be fooled into digging some iron, coke cans and pull rings. I know i have for years LOL. All the best HH Tony
+magpie307 I know Tony! It wouldnt be as much fun if we dug up gold and silver every outing..or would it?? hahah I just remember thinking I must be so rubbish at detecting after looking at peoples finds every weekend while all I had was a couple of ring pulls and a bag full of rubbish! as for detecting myself, yeah I do it every week ;-)
Your right there, The novelty of digging gold and silver would soon wear off. I'm rather looking forward to my first gold find but first might have too dig loads of rubbish to get there LOL ATB Tony
Dawn, we have all been to this ring rodeo..haha. So true, I've been detecting 24 years and I are this rookie mistake only two years ago with my pin pointer. I'm just glad no one was around to see this fiasco..haha. Another rookie mistake I made was two years ago at a rally in Toronto, Canada. Tim and George from Diggers were there. George was detecting near me and I got a nice signal. He came over and watched me as I retrieved a coin. My mistake was I didn't check my hole before filling it in. I was nervous enough having one of the worlds most popular detectorists watching me. As I went to walk away George swept his detector over my hole and it beeped. I was a little embarrassed when he told me to check it one more time. I opened up the hole again and scanned with the pin pointer and there was another coin...bugger all. He bugged for the rest of the day...haha. Needless to say I have never made that mistake again.
Hey Dawn, you have got a way of putting things over that allows your northern humour to really shine through.Having just watched this video you have really brightened my morning up. Just out of interest roughly what area are you in, we are near Rochdale.
The regulations are so strict here in Sweden. You are allowed to OWN a detector, but you need permission from the local authorities to detect. You have to apply for permission and you can only apply for a specified area, and the area can not be near earlier archeological finds (and those places are scattered everywhere!!!!). And you also have to have a good reason to detect in the area, and the permission of the land owner. So... you aren't even allowed to detect in your own backyard without permission :-/ I really would like to get a metal detector and detect on my great grandmothers land, but I don't know if it is worth the hassle going through all the bureaucracy...
thanks for this video. I wish I had watched it three weeks ago when I got my first metal detector because it took me three hours to realize all the beeping from the start was due to my steel toed boots.
Good video Dawn. Good advice as well. it does take time to learn your machine and then after you learn it you dig up more pull tabs. But the balance leans more towards the good finds. it is just you still should dig the ify signals thanks and Cheers
Dawn, at time frame 7:39, that looks like it might be the top of an old straight stick walking cane. If you find out one day I would love to know if I was right. My first summer of detecting and your right, many trips out and not finding anything good yet, but I won't give up! Something I've been doing, don't know if I'm wasting my time doing it but I'm keeping my finds separated by tags from each location searched along with a rough drawn map showing where on that location each item was found. My thought is, as I learn more, one day a light bulb might go off in my head and it will make more sense to me then it does now. May be these finds are clues as to what else may be there and help guide me to go back to some of these spots and where to continue searching when I do go back, make sense? One thing for sure, it keeps me thinking about these spots I've been to and urges me to continue. Anyways, thanks for the tips and good hunting! Cheers!
