I am very Interested in metal detecting! I have not started yet and was wondering if it's ok if I purchase an inexpensive detector seeing as I am just beginning..? Would it still work as well? Any suggestions on which one? I just can't afford $1,000 machine at this time.
Hello Lauren, yes there is an inexpensive detector that I highly recommend. Go to the description of this video and you will find a link for the NOKTA SIMPLEX it is a very good detector and is easy to use. Please let me know if I can help further.
@Laffin Hyena below the video you should see the title of the video and to the right of the title should be a down arrow, click on that to open the video description then you will find the links there.
Hey man I'm very interested in metal detecting but I havent got one yet and was wondering what the cheapest option, and the easiest to use one for detecting everything that you said at the start in one metal detector, is there any like the mine lab that is less expensive and easier to use?
Just got my first detector, been looking at them for years... this video was SO helpful! Watched it twice. Been out in my yard twice after spending some time with the instructions and the setup of my detector. So far I found two gutter straps, a 1979 quarter, a 1980 penny, some wire and my late dog Maggie's sterling silver dog tag that she lost in 2012. (made me cry some 😥) Anyway.. thanks so much for this video!!
I'm getting excited looking forward to getting over a stroke i had, I need all th info I can get and ways to do things, Thank you guys god bless you and have more great huts. I believe ill be up and going soon!
I'm just getting into this at the young age of 70 ... hopefully that's not too old, but this is by far one of the best videos I've found, Larry is laid back and smooth. I hope starting out with the ACE 300 wasn't a waste of money, meaning I hope I shouldn't have spent $1000 instead of $250 thanks for this great video. BTW, where can I get a pouch like yours?
Great info for beginners and well done but I would like to add some important info for your viewers . Knowing the location of any possible underground utilities is extremely important . This applies to major utilities like power, phone, coax cable, fiber optic cables water, and natural gas lines which will usually be put into a common trench line but not always . Most times they're down pretty deep but once again -- not always . I've been a repair technician and I've done utilities locating professionally for several years and I've definitely done my share of digging up lines and seen some lines that were barely under the grass including power lines . I've had to go to emergency locates where someone had dug into a power cable and got hurt pretty bad and in one incident the dig operator was burned over 60% of their body .It was a site I had previously located and had informed the construction company who had requested the locate that the power cable was pretty shallow and to be extremely careful but they didn't heed the warning . It's absolutely imperative to ask questions about the area and the utilities and where there might be sprinkler systems or private wiring like lighting etc and to always exercise caution . Unfortunately that one incident is one of many I could talk about but figured it was worth mentioning . If you haven't already done a video regarding this subject could you please do one ? Happy (safe) treasure hunting !!
Don't make the mistake of not double checking your plug after you've found something. Sometimes there's multiple things in the plug and when you find one, you think "Well, that's it," and you put the plug back into the hole without continuing to check it for other objects.
I recently started myself with my 9 yr old son. our first find was a ring i believe to be silver and a bunch of trash. Some modern coins on the second time out. Fell in love with this hobby❤️
Myself and my son and daughter (11 & 9) completed our very first detecting day outside of our backyard (just junk there so far). It was a popular FL beach (tourists and detectorists alike). It was hot so they wore out quickly and retired to swimming the surf! It was a bust for paying for the gas there and back (found all of $0.52!) Found and disposed of a lot of beer cans, pull tabs, pop tops, and tent stakes mostly. But most of all we got to LEARN some hard but also some fun lessons and experiences. The kids shared pinpointing and digging (big mistake not having a sand scoop!!). We WILL be back out, and will try different, (less hunted hopefully) beaches as well as any other site we can access. Thanks for the beginner tips!
Really helpful guide for beginners like myself. Also thanks for teaching people to respect the land, refill holes and gain permission from land owners. I'll do my best! :D

Thank's Dan. This is an excellent video for 'newbies' like me! I especially liked the 'dirt towel' for leaving no trace in lawns and well maintained landscaping.
I just got a metal detector yesterday and this was a very helpful and informative video, I live near an abandoned sulfur mining town and cant wait to put this new knowledge to action.
Outstanding video. I just broke into the hobby, I bought a Fisher f22 metal detector, the Lesche trowel and a Garrett pro pointer. I watched your video and got a better understanding of patients and technique while sweeping. Today was my first trip out to the beach and a local park, I spent two hours and netted a broken key, a lug nut, a Matchbox car, a disposable vape pen, and Massachusetts state quarter that was at ground level hidden by the grass....it was a good day and I'm hooked.
I'm a newbie to detecting and I really appreciated this video. You have a knack for teaching in a very thorough and easy to understand way. Thanks for the tips!
By far the best beginners video done on youtube. I learned a few things that as a spinal injury patient will keep me from getting hurt again, ry so much!
I purchased a mid priced Fisher last summer, and practiced with it in my own yard and a neighbor's yard. I have gained some confidence with it, but still have a lot more area to search in my own yard. So will probably finish that before venturing elsewhere. The weather is getting better now up here in New England, so can't wait to get back out there. I am retired, so have plenty of time. My best find so far has been a vintage sterling silver heart shaped pendant. I also found an old piece of lead shaped like a padlock, but it is not a padlock. Maybe it is some kind of old weight? I haven't found any old coins yet - just a few copper and zinc Lincoln pennies. And yeah, have found a lot of junk - old nails, screws, foil, wire - all kinds of junk. But i separate and save all metals in buckets. At some point, will recycle the junk metals. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I have picked up a few valuable tips in using the device better and digging the plugs. I was digging out the entire circles, and putting them back. I like your idea of leaving like a hinge. I have a cheaper pin pointer that does work, but will probably upgrade everything to something better at some point. Thanks again, and happy hunting my new friend! New sub here!
My friend, it is so nice to meet outstanding human beings such as yourself. I enjoyed your tutorial immensely but it is your care for others and animals that touched me and make me feel good about others in this world. Some complain that masculinity is gone or under attack but real masculinity has always been best defined by the gentleman of the world, like my father, who we just lost two months ago, and by men like you...Outstanding video my friend! Thank you.
Hello & greetings, watching from Derbyshire, England here. A fellow treasure hunter and metal detectorist. I am doing some research into other guys beginners guides to metal detecting as I plan to create my own for my channel. I enjoyed your video, it was highly detailed and informative. Loved how you interviewed your son. Great job and thank you
Hello From The Old Timer of Minnesota I have been detecting for 51yr If you have any questions about the hobby I'm going to try to help you out so that you don't have any problems!!!!!
@@BN-qd3vf thank you that is very kind of you, I would appreciate your experience and expert advice. Have a look at my channel and see what you think? I get to metal detect on some really beautiful pieces of English hillside countryside 😄
I have to say Sir, although this all may seem quite basic, I've gained a lot of respect for what you are demonstrating, and this will go a long way to preserving future access for all Detectorists. Thanks for showing this Newbie the right way of doing things.
When I first started metal detecting was with a Jetco Mustang metal detector from a neighbor who had it for his grand kids but they didn't want it,he gave it to me & what started my hobby, that was in 1976 .
I am just getting into metal detecting it seems pretty cool. I want to do it as a hobby. Thank you for the information. You seem good and vetted thank you for putting this video on youtube.
Thank you for watching. It is a great hobby to get into. I have mote tutorials and hunts on my channel so be sure to subscribe and more content is on its way.
Hi you guys i,m from the UK and I must say I am just doing a bit of "RESEARCH " on the detecting and you guys have me convinced it,s a good way of doing something super interesting ,, and I love the way you,ve have the kids interested in it . anyway good luck I,m sure you both find something cool
They're doing new construction all over the area. I've been wanting to check the old alley ways before they put in driveways. My mom gave me her detector she's never used. Gonna try. Thank you for the video and help.
What a great video, thanks! My stepdad recently passed away God love him. I took possession of one of his metal detectors, a White’s Spectrum XLT. I’m excited to get out with my son and start hunting!
brillant video so much information after a 45yr break, got me a x-terra 705 and making some tools for digging for now ,will get permisson and keep it tidy like you showed thank you. im in Wales in the UK>
I'm in the UK and having had an old Whites Spectrum that I played with for a few months 20 years ago, I've just bought a Nokta Makro Simplex and decided to have a serious go at the hobby. I'm about to go out with a big group for the first time and your video was really useful to know what kit I needed. I've bought all of it including some bluetooth headphones, though not all the same makes. Thanks again. Norm
I just got a metal detector for Christmas. It’s my first ever so I’m a total newbie to this . I’m looking forward to what I might find. My husband bought it for me. I’ve never seen anyone use a drop towel before ,what a good idea.
Yes if you are in a nice yard or park. It is the cleanest way. Congrats on the new detector. Feel free to find Sod Busters Metal Detecting group on Facebook also. Happy hunting
Waiting on my first detector is a a decent beginning one in told a pancky, very excited. Your video is very good for us noobs, learned alot that sometimes other's don't cover. Thanks for sharing
Your video was very helpful. I'm just starting to metal detect for something fun to do with my 10-year-old grandson. I live in a 112-year-old farmhouse just outside Kansas City, MO in the country, and I'm sure there are treasures underfoot in the yard. Wish I had watched BEFORE I dug holes in my lawn and ruined a gardening trowel. ;-D Thank you.
You know his dad went out and seeded those perfectly stacked quarters so his son could find them. Hook him early and got a partner for life...lol. Love it! I remember when I was little I would go to my grandparents on occasion. I used to love looking under his favorite recliner for his fallen change and stuff. I only found out later he used to drop it down there on purpose because he knew I liked digging for treasure. I love him for that. It is the little things that make great memories.
thanks for this video! Never detected before but I have permission for my job property, absolutely enormous. Used to house 891 people, now like 12 live in the area😊
So many questions. I just turned 60. Ever since I was a kid I’ve thought about getting in to this but don’t know where to begin. Some questions to begin. What can I expect to pay for a decent detector? Can you tell by the sounds it makes what metal you have likely found? Does it make a different sound depending how deep it is? Is it likely you will have to make an agreement with landowner on whatever you find? What legal responsibilities are involved? I’m sure I’ll think of more but that’s it for now. Sorry for all the questions but as I mentioned this newbie is not getting any younger and it seems that the physical activity would be a plus as well. Thanks for your help and patience.
You can pay anywhere from 300- Thousands of dollars but I can help you find what will fit your budget and work for the type of detecting you will be doing. Send me an email at sodbustersmetaldetecting@gmail.com or you can contact Dan at outlawmetaldetectors.com and tell him I sent you.
Love watching your videos! I’ve owned an equinox 800 for almost 3 years and it’s never been used. I’m now finding time and plan on getting out with it very soon. I’ve been watching your videos to try and refresh my memory on how to use it. I’ve had kept it charged up and the last download I did was the 2.0. I see now that there’s a 3.0 , but I’m going to hold off on installing that after watching some of you videos. Thanks for all your time in helping people like me to learn the Equinox.
Great video!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. I have been detecting for about 7 years and I learned some new things from your video today. 1 thing.... loosen the dirt in the plug before putting the plug back. I should have thought of that!! 🤯. I consider my pinpointer a MUST. I have bought several and Garrett’s is far and away the best (in my opinion). Cost a little more but worth it to me! I chase some things around with it for a while sometimes. 😂. I will certainly be sharing!! Good job Larry & Ben!!
Thank you for you amazing video I bought my first detector 2 days ago it is a Ginour MD-3040 I have set it up just need 9v batteries coming Wednesday your video is invaluable in relation to the good manners in and around a dig I will not forget this I am a bit nervous but excited to get started I have just subscribed to your Chanel lots of your vids to see thank you again my journey begins.
Hello Liam, it is a great hobby and can be extremely rewarding. I think you would love doing it and also be able to learn more about history through this hobby. If you get to the point of ready to start, let me know and I can help you choose what equipment you will need. You can also join my Sod Busters Metal Detecting Facebook group if you would like.
Thanks so much man! Great ideas with the pill bottles my detector gets here anytime today and I’m so excited to go out! I’ve had a few but I’m very excited and those are great tips!
Great video. Easy to follow, and gave me a good idea of what to expect. I have to decide on my gear, and I wasn't even aware of the drop cloth, the spritzer, and the toothpicks.
Hi Larry. I recently purchased an Equinox 600 that I’m just starting to learn to use. I was a little intimidated by some of the features and have found your videos very helpful. I live in the country in WV on part of an old farm. I have a lot to check out on my own property. But eventually I’d like to hunt on local farms around old houses and buildings or where they used to be. I would never do so without permission. How do you negotiate with a landowner regarding your findings? Do you always have a verbal agreement you can keep 100% of what you find? It isn’t like you hock all your findings and can split the proceeds 50/50 or something like that. I can imagine a land owner not feeling good about you digging up some war, jewelry or coin artifact of some value and keeping it for yourself. I’ve considered to offer to show the land owner everything I find and let them keep as much or as little as they want. I kind of feel like I’m in this for the excitement of the find, not the financial value to me. I could take a picture and then leave my findings with the landowner. Building a collection of the real finds would be better than pictures but not a requirement.
I am glad I am able to help Keith. As far as finds on someone's property, I have only had a couple people that wanted what I have found. In most cases I concentrate on getting the permission and if they mention anything about what I find I tell them that if I were to find any substantial items that we could reach an agreement on one of us buying out the other or splitting the sale of the item. We use our finds to help pay for our detecting equipment so to just hand everything over isnt fare either. I wish you the best. Feel free to find Sod Busters Metal Detecting group on Facebook also.
Great advice, now had I seen this about 5 months ago when I started it'd been much more organized, love the toilet paper and pill bottle ideas. Good stuff, thank you!
I really want to get into Metal detecting, i've been reading on getting started, something fun to do in my time off from work and it's really amazing to see some of the things people find. I'm going to check out your detectors and possibly buy some gear.
Love your videos! My girlfriend got me the BH Land Ranger Pro for Christmas last year and I am hooked! I have all the tools you mentioned. I have found so many coins ($22 face value) and a couple rings. My only complaint with BH and the LRP is the pinpoint and ground grab buttons are junk out of the box, sent it back to BH and it came back just as bad. I won't purchase BH again. The equinox 800 is my next purchase. Just my story :-) Thanks again for your great videos!
Old video hopefully you still help and teach I am getting into detecting starting from scratch I’m hoping I can get everything I need for under 2,000.00 but I’m going to go ahead and figure probably be more. What’s fun and a hobby is always expensive part of it I guess
Howdy: I just want to show you my appreciation for this specific video. It is the first time I watch you explain the "treasure-detecting world" Realy a master class Sir. Thanks for your very descriptive and detailed video. I am still in the starting process. I already bought my metal detector. Thanks to you I learn about what other tools I might need to have a successful, fun, and luckily discover. It is great to have an assistant like your son, never a better one I would say..... again I will be in touch, thanks again for sharing your knowledge. I just subscribed to your channel and of course, gave you a like. this is a hobby still in baby steps but very excited about it. Have a blessed day.
Thank you very much for making this video! "Santa" is bringing my 10 yr old son a detector for Christmas. I want to make sure we are responsible when we go out. I'm going to have him watch your video before we head out to play. Thanks again!
Great videos, my wife and I just purchased the Mine Lab 800, really looking forward to giving it a try since were always out at old abandoned mining camps here in Western MT. Thanks again for the informational videos, really helps with the learning curve!!
Thanks so much for the tips trying to get my research in for when I do get to go out there, this is something that I've always been fascinated with just haven't been financially able enough yet to get me a metal detector, hoping to change that soon lol. Keep up the the good work sir! And thank you so much!
I know nothing about how metal detectors work or anything about the hobby, I found your video and learned a lot. Are there any detectors you’d recommend for someone just starting out that are budget friendly?
Very interesting. I just got my first detector and want to practice a bit. I have a piece of property I just purchased that I hope to eventually build a home on. It’s in a rapidly suburbanizing part of Ohio that was very rural until 30-40 years ago. This land has never been developed before. Is this a good place to detect and if so what would you expect to find here?
My son is currently 1 years old and my wife just bought me and him a metal detector for fathers day, I'm a beginner of beginners. Never ever been metal detecting. But I have been dinosaur bone hunting with my father when I was three. I found a nice gem quality petrified bone in Utah, which surprised my father. Maybe my son will do the same in a few years. Haha
OK cool. I had my eye on a detector and finally pulled the trigger. I learned lots with this video. I have 7 acres that was once hit by a landslide so there's lots of fun to be had.
New subscriber and I have the exact same hand digger you use. Works great! I have been learning a lot from your tutorials on the Nox 800 and really appreciate your efforts in producing these videos. Keep it up!!
New to the hobby just got my Ace 250 my grave digger blood red lesche digger Garrett headphones kellyco gloves still need a pin pointer and a coil cover and a belt pouch I'm located in New Bedford Massachusetts and lots of old places would love a hunting buddy.

Good luck hunting 👍🏻
@@SodBustersMetalDetecting Thank you sir. Good luck to you and your son as well.
Thank for your video! Very helpful!..just starting my Metal Detecting Adventure at the age of 60...cheers from Chile!
I am glad to help. You can also find me on Sod Busters Metal Detecting Facebook group if you'd like
My friend, it is so nice to meet outstanding human beings such as yourself. Thank you.
Thank you William. I am very sorry for your loss. May God comfort your heart!
Just got my Minelab yesterday and will be watching all your videos. Thanks for breaking down the steps so well. I can’t wait to get started!
Feel free to join the Sod Busters Metal Detecting Facebook group also and reach out with any questions.
Hello & greetings, watching from Derbyshire, England here. A fellow treasure hunter and metal detectorist. I have to say Sir, although this all may seem quite basic, I've gained a lot of respect for what you are demonstrating, and this will go a long way to preserving future access for all Detectorists. Thanks for showing this Newbie the right way of doing things.
Thank you for watching
I am retired and wanted to do this all my life. But now I have the time.

When I first started metal detecting was with a Jetco Mustang metal detector from a neighbor who had it for his grand kids but they didn't want it,he gave it to me & what started my hobby, that was in 1976 .
Thats awesome, happy hunting

They're doing new construction all over the area. I've been wanting to check the old alley ways before they put in driveways. My mom gave me her detector she's never used. Gonna try. Thank you for the video and help.

What a great video, thanks! My stepdad recently passed away God love him. I took possession of one of his metal detectors, a White’s Spectrum XLT. I’m excited to get out with my son and start hunting!

Awesome, thanks for watching
I'm in the UK and having had an old Whites Spectrum that I played with for a few months 20 years ago, I've just bought a Nokta Makro Simplex and decided to have a serious go at the hobby. I'm about to go out with a big group for the first time and your video was really useful to know what kit I needed. I've bought all of it including some bluetooth headphones, though not all the same makes. Thanks again.
Norm
Good luck hunting
Just ordered my dector online last night- thank you for this helpful video
Your welcome Heather. You can also find me on Sod Busters Metal Detecting Facebook group if you'd like
I just got a metal detector for Christmas.
Yes you should find some goodies. If you need digging tools or any metal detecting supplies outlawmetaldetectors.com can help you out
You know his dad went out and seeded those perfectly stacked quarters so his son could find them.
Actually this was a true coin spill and it made us both very happy. Thank you for watching and happy hunting 😊
I got one today and I live near the river can't wait to go detecting in the summer
Awesome
thanks for this video! Never detected before but I have permission for my job property, absolutely enormous. Used to house 891 people, now like 12 live in the area😊
Nice, good luck to you on the hunt.
Awesome! Thanks for watching and good luck hunting!
Thank you my friend I appreciate it. Happy treasure hunting 😊
I just got my equinox 600. This video really helped me out a lot! Thanks for making it!

Picked up my coffee mug Larry...thanks for sharing what you've learned
Thank you. I appreciate you watching
I concur, have gone through a number of shovels and handheld diggers, they didn’t last very long at all, now have invested in the proper shovel
Thank you for showing me how to detect, I'm a new detectress. You are really great! And wow, your son looks allot like you. 😊😅
Thank you for watching. I have many more tutorials.
Great video. Easy to follow, and gave me a good idea of what to expect.
I have to decide on my gear, and I wasn't even aware of the drop cloth, the spritzer, and the toothpicks.
Feel free to contact Dan at outlawmetaldetectors.com and ge will help you get setup.
This was great for a newbie like me. Great tips and process. Thank you!
Thanks for watching
Very thankful for your video training and most impressed your communion with your son, thanks for the expertise .

I really want to get into Metal detecting, i've been reading on getting started, something fun to do in my time off from work and it's really amazing to see some of the things people find. I'm going to check out your detectors and possibly buy some gear.
Awesome! Feel free to find Sod Busters Metal Detecting Facebook group and message me with any questions.

Thank you Jay I appreciate you watching. Stay safe and happy hunting
We just started and have only searched beaches so this is very helpful on what to do at a park.
Glad to be of help. Good luck hunting

Keep up the the good work sir! And thank you so much!
Thank you for watching 😊
Haha
Awesome. Feel free to find Sod Busters Metal Detecting Facebook group and I can answer questions for you there to help you when needed
