That's great that you got the permission to detect the park. Great tips about the evergreens leaving less leaf-litter, and not leaving any damage behind - especially in a park where more people would walk through at night or in fog.

I miss the old metal detecting activities you did in Germany, I really enjoyed watching those. Just watching you during this video, it is obvious that your passion for detecting is alive and well, in fact, you seem to be in your element more than when doing the travel videos. I do enjoy the travel, and I hope you continue to do both. I watched the video you and Mazzi shot where you were requesting ideas to fund the project and I am trying to think of ideas to help.

I love to research old maps. Its amazing how many areas which were once farms, roads, buildings, etc. are now just forrests only 50-100yrs later. Small villages, towns, and industrial areas have come and gone for ages. In America we don't have the benefit of thousands of years of civilization, but we do generally have very good land use records available and a wealth of that is on-line, free to look up. I also try to correlate old maps with current Google Earth images.

This was great information and fun too. Knowing the terrain is a big help, and keeping your eyes open can save your life. Be aware of the insects around you too, so you don't disturb a hornets nest or walk over some ground bee's. In America there is the added fun of keeping an eye out for territorial mushroom hunters and pot growers.
Try not to make poor decisions that can get you killed. We had a guy hiking a very dangerous trail here in Hawaii a few weeks ago, he fell 400 feet to his death, trying to retrieve a friends hat. So be smart, be safe, and with these tips of Dan's have fun.

Google Map was informative that show Paths of young trees what used to be roads... in America the talk about cigarettes we simply call it field dressing... once again thank you I subscribe to your Channel...

Great video! Not trying to be a jerk but I have to disagree with your logic on paths though. Here in Texas I wondered why I always found arrowheads exclusively at the road where a bridge crossed to water no matter how far I walked down the creek. My reasoning is the game followed the easiest path down to the water; the Indians followed the game and camped at the water; the path became the trail; the trail became a wagon trail; the wagon trail became a road. The contours that made it the easiest access stayed relatively the same.
What never ceases to amaze me though is being out in the middle of nowhere, getting a signal and finding a penny only 6 years old...lol It's more likely it seems that you would find something ancient than new.

I give permission to myself, works well, and as long a have full respect for private propriety and owners ( in there I ask permission), the remaining land is free to explore.
I`m not a vandal, nor a pig, so I leave any place equal or better than before (easy), and you will see no traces of my presence in there.

At 13:33 that was a hawk laughing. The thing that worries me is that you guys put ferrets down your pants.
LOL in the US we have cougars; thing about cougras is that they like to sneak up on you. If your ever walking in the woods in the western US and you smell cat wee (it will be a strong smell BTW) be very wary.

    • @mromro3032

No so let me get this straight we put ferrets down our trousers yeah weird but you know what its like when your drunk but in america in the woods you put cougers down your trousers now that just mad at least a ferret only has small teeth and you let them sneak up on you to do it no no thats just mental 😂😂

If it were true about the leaf litter. Wouldn't you expect that under a beach or other hardwood tree there would be leaves and soil way up the tree? And under evergreen trees there would be little to non? But when you look through a woodlot the ground is all at the same level, minus the terrain features and changes. I've been a foresters most of my life. Just don't agree with your thought process. In saying that it makes no matter to me I love your videos! They are very helpful and informative.

Another great video. I live in the Forest of Dean, (literally in the forest!) so this is great advice. Thankfully some of the woods around me is privately owned so hopefully I can get permission. Lots of mining going back hundreds of years so lots of iron and junk, but also hopefully a few decent things to be found. If not, then I’ve had a nice few hours in the woods with nature.

Thank you so much for sharing , It is January 2020 now , and your advice is still 100% relevant .One nasty problem is how very dangerous this hobby is . ...Soft target with expensive instruments . Personal safety is such a huge issue. A grown ass man was detecting on a beach, was attacked by a machete wielding mugger., Saved only by drawing his firearm.

Fun video Dan. Here in the colonies bears are not a big problem. Our biggest threat is
tics. Nasty things, spread disease. The woods are my favorite MD places. In New England
almost all land was field in colonial times so its like field hunting in the shade. Also
hundreds of not yet found cellar hole going back to the 16 hundreds.
