The way i look at it, I'm just getting junk out of the ground with a chance of finding cool stuff.
I have only found junk but it's fun because my daughter and I are spending time together exploring. She could be sitting at home staring at her iPad.
And it will instill in her a love for the outdoors.
When I'm metal detecting, I talk to myself with your accent.
You have the best attitude for metal detecting, you have already found gold just by being out on the land. Alive i tell ya.

Ponk 80 me and my cousin just got a metal detector with our joint money, it arrives tomorrow. I totally agree with you, we're not in it for the riches, it's just funny to think that some people drop the weirdest stuff and is fun to see the history. Finding £1000000 worth of jewellery would just be a nice little bonus :)
I am a beginner metal detector and have only found 2 things so far: a 2012 P union shield penny and an empty beer can

I've recently started metal detecting I find it a hobby like fishing sometimes you catch something and sometimes you don't but the scenery and just been out there was amazing and the wildlife.. if I guess metal detecting similar you get out there and if you're lucky might get hit and if you're not lucky ..it is good.. like the exercise and just been out there in the environment just amazing and I'm going to keep on metal detecting the exciting thing is you never know what you're gonna get that's why I find it very good adventure p.s. like your TH-cam channel you helped me a lot👍😊
I have to say that bullet looked like a carved bullet. They used to carve them to make game pieces. That one looked like a bishop from a chess game.
Took up metal detecting 2 wks ago , i bought myself an XP Deus , I know the odds of findings gold/silver coins are about the same odds as winning the Lottery . I bought this metal detector to find iron , steel or whatever of lesser value . I just want to find something interesting now and again , I like the feeling that when i find something i think to myself " someone stood on this very spot " wither it be 50 , 100 or maybe more years ago . It gives me the goosebumps
Hi, Peter! Actually, the chances of you finding silver is pretty high. Gold, a little less so. You've got a brilliant machine there, and it's only a matter of time.
But yes, the historical stuff is as interesting, or even more interesting in other ways.

This video is awesome! I watch heaps of videos on metal detecting and want to start up, but everyone just shows the rings they find rather then showing how long it took to find that. This video is actually really helpful in the sense that, once I start, I can't just give up because I didn't find "treasure" straight away.

Your so right, that beautiful landscape is the real treasure, Id love to dig with you! Your attitude is ace, and that advice was spot on, its not about the finds, take the expectations away and just enjoy being outside. Great video xx

My 2nd hunt was today. Not disappointed by the finds so far, just a little shocked how physically demanding metal detecting is (at least for me since I am sadly out of shape!).
My parents recently got me a new detector, which is an upgrade from my old detector in which I only found rusty hunks of iron. On the second day of my new detector I found a US 1941 Wheat Penny!

This is so true I started metal detecting with a friend we bought a garret together but after searching for about 3 hours he gave up and now 2 years later I am the only one that uses the metal detector and still didn't find anything nice not even a modern coin but just doing metal detecting is something that I love sure it is nice when I find something nice but that's not the reason why I metal detect
Was out yesterday and found loads of horseshoes but still loved every minute👍🏻😃
Horseshoes are the best. I have 36 after 6 months and every time I get one, my detecting trip feels complete.

I think one of the main reasons is the huge difficulty of finding permissions, even after watching all the guides including yours when I started out it drove me to quit, because every answer was a "no", and after putting in so much effort to go home with several "no" responses for weeks on end was extremely depressing and aided in losing all motivation to continue the hobby.
But after several months out, the bug is always there, and I now look for other ways to enjoy the hobby by planning on going to rallies and such, and just hope one day I pick up those permissions :)

Great video Kris, I got the same with one of those livestock ear tags. I turned it over saw the gold shining , but when I gave it a wipe it was not to be. Not gold just an ear tag. GL&HH 👍

I share my finds with anyone who's intrested. I pull our my phone a show my finds sometimes in videos other times in pictures . Out of the many who see my finds I'm quick to tell them it's not easy. If you plan to do metal detected be aware that the success rate is very low . Most of the time you'll go home with a pocket full of modern coins . I do say it's about the thrill of the hunt and the chance to be outside and enjoy nature . The reward is exercise and occasionally something spectacular and valuable. Bottom line most people won't do it no matter what . Getting a thrill when you find something valuable is addicting. I find metal detecting very relaxing . Along with high expectations beginners do not detect enough hours to learn their machine...if you can stick with it those first 60 -70 hours your hooked for life.
Mate, great watching you - me and my son have borrowed a right old 1970s cscope and have found a bit of a crashed Spitfire and a 303. That's treasure enough for us! Addicted already. Good luck sir.

Great new permission bleeps. I've been metal detecting for just over 3 weeks now with a Garrett 250.
Luckily I live 3 minutes walk from the beach but I have no permissions as of yet but still trying.
I have no expectations of life changing treasures but I have lost weight, found £7.30 spendables, 5 fishing weights, Spanish 20 cent, and a pre-decimal half penny that I'm going to olive oil( thanks to your advice).

Great video as always Kris, you're spot on about unrealistic expectations, for me and a good few detectorists I know, the joy isn't in finding 'treasure' tho I like to joke about it, it's finding things that are interesting, even if that is just something I don't know what it is and I go away and research, be it a button, a badge, coin or even a gate hook.
ah. yes. You've got it right.. I am new. I've had some issues, I've only been detecting about 5 months of almost a year. And now I'm in a new area with a new detector... so. lots of new adventures coming my way. great videos and adventures.

I detect to clean up the land a bit. It's interesting what's down there even if it's metal rings from broken bottles.
I gave up the hobby about 25 years ago. I had a nice White's detector, paid about a grand for it. But it was HEAVY. I've got a bad back, and after 30 minutes of swinging the detector my back would start hurting like crazy. That took all the fun out of it. I gave up and sold the detector. BUT all these years later I've started watching TH-cam videos and my interest has peaked again. I bought a nice little Teknetics Delta detector that weighs nothing. Once the ground thaws out I'm going to give it another try. Thanks for the video. :-)

I am wanting to start this hobby, I have no worries about me giving it up due to lack of finds, my worry is not finding places to metal detect on... That's the only thing that gives me pause.

I am from Michigan USA and liked your vid i too am very new to metal detecting i have a Bounty Hunter Time Ranger and a Garrett AT Pro Pin Pointer. So far i have found a clad Dime 1983 a toy Truck 1975 and a Copper Lip Stick case from the 1940`s in my back yard.

As soon as I land on a field and find a bit of lead I know I'm onto a winner. Lead gives a really good signal and if someone has missed that then there's other stuff missed too 😍
Me and my brother went metal detecting today and we found a lot of metal but it was deep down... definitely not pipes but we gave up after about 2 hours of digging down, we did manage to find a weird piece of unrusted metal that had slits in and on the back it had some sort of vent kind of thing.

Recently bought my first detector.Found my first penny within 3 seconds in my lawn,got me excited. Then a few rusty nails, I'm hooked. Next day nature dumped 4 inches of snow with single digit temps....reason for TH-cam. :) I realize the chances of finding a chest of gold coins is slim,especially in upstate NY. For me its another thing to do while enjoying nature. When I see those old bullets come up,I wonder if it could have taken someones life. eeerie feeling.

Omg. I'm from Alabama as well. Been thinking of metal detecting for a few years. Only problem is woods full of shotgun shells and casings. Would be really cool if this was a more historic setting like your detecting in kris.
Henry Gaither i went metal detecting today and yesterday, im in alabama, to the right of mobile. Ive found 4 musket balls, a civil war bullet, and a us army pants button from WWI 1914-1918. Im wanting a coin tho with a date.

As a beginner, I've had good luck and not so good. But, I enjoy the hunt of what's maybe just out of sight. I recently found a ring at a park that a girl had lost some yrs. ago and it was from an old Beau that was lost in Afghanistan . When I gave it to her, well that will keep me hunting. its just the fun of being out and walking the land thats been in my family a hundred years...i find nothing of value but the old parts of farm machines and various horse shoes i find are priceless to me because i know theyre from my ancestors time on this land.
I love detecting , haven't given up but have tried so hard for new permissions with no joy. I miss it soooo much. Another great video by the way Kris. Thank you. The exotic brushius Hairius maximus caterpillar was a sight to behold :) , best of luck with the new permission buddy.

permissions are the landowner giving you permission to detect on his land, you need permission from the landowner to detect anywhere in the UK.

I quit cause my pinpointer was so cheap it didnt detect anything and my compact shovel i dont know whats it made of started to bent although it was brand new and i couldnt find anything except bottle caps on my third try. But thanks to your videos i will get the GP pinpointer and i found a promising war relic battle ground and now i understand how to do metal detecting properly thanks to your videos.

Be detected as it is one of the oldest historical parts of England and areas that protected England’s past its a pity it’s in the no do

I have just started. What is the best way of gaining permission to detect on someone’s land ? I find your posts very helpful.
I just love being outside with headphones that drown out the noise. It is also fun to find crazy stuff.
I'm always pleased when a video is made showing the hobby 'like it is'. Hoards and other exciting things are not everywhere and many fields seem to contain nothing but old iron junk. Even if there is something, you have to walk over it and swing the detector in exactly the right place to get a signal. People often don't really understand just how small the coil's detecting field is once you get down to six inches or so! Sometimes the iron can mask the good stuff so you have to get the iron out first. I've been detecting for two years on and off and have only just found my first Victorian silver sixpence. Maybe I'm getting the hang of it I thought - and next day I found relatively little but still a naval button from the Napoleonic Wars era. This is one of those 'keep trying' hobbies and if you ask those successful detectorists what they've found the answer will be 'loads of junk and some good stuff - and it took many hours to find the good stuff'. Thanks again for the frank comments.
Some people think they will find a fortune and give up after a short while. What you said at the start of your vid is the difference between us and them! We do it for exercise and the outdoors, it's a bonus if we find something. Cheers.
Well that was a nice surprise from 5 1/2 years ago Kris. I was a bit slow on stopping today's video and this popped up. There was no Like on it, so I knew I hadn't seen it. Interesting finds, especially the blue copper coin. The cobweb on your beardy chin amused me 😁I have to get out and do some permission door knocking. I have seen your videos on getting permissions and I even have your forms saved, but not gotten around to it and sorta frightened. Must do it though.
I have purchased gofind 66 and gofind 44 alongwith Pro find 35, I have been detecting about 2 years, but no success, but I will continue a gain and again.
That ring looked like it had the the zoomorphic snake design from Medieval/Viking/Roman era

I don't comment on videos too often, but...good video! I don't metal detect to dig treasures out of the ground. I metal detect to dig stories out of the ground. You dug some great stories out of the ground in this video.
Gaining permissions is the trickiest part.
Just to stay out of the shotgun range of the farmers and you'll be fine.
So true, I'm just getting started,, in fact still saving for a detector. But just trying to do the research to find places is fun. I never knew there were so many abandoned coal camps within 25 miles of my home town. When I'm going down the road, I catch myself looking for old driveways where something may have been years ago. I'd love to find something cool, but if I did I don't know that I'd sell it.
Go around the older folks and ask them to tell you about the old days and the folks that used to live on abondon homestead.or where to locate empty property,then get permission yeah.
I have pulled quite a few coins out of our local beach, only a few spendable 😂 loads of junk too. But the occasional pound coin is awesome. And so i a ring pull 👍👍

a lot of people are buying garret ace 250 metal detectors about £200. I got a used viking 6 as was used by ged dodd (peacehavens channel on here)
Yup, the Garret models are great. The Cscope 3MX is also a good beginners (and intermediate's) detector, and I'm beginning to hear good things about the Minelab Go Find machines as well.
+Addictedtobleeps think its a toss up between the minelab 705 or the Garrett AT pro. Going to spend that little bit more because they seem water resistant/proof.

I intend to retire early and metal detecting is going to get me out into the beautiful British countryside, I walk a lot and already enjoy the countryside, when I retire I will have more time on my hands, so will combine the two.
I too will only be doing it for fun and fresh air.
I got a metal detector for my Xmas, 2019,, I've still not been out because of the weather ,,, can't wait to get out, so I'm not sure if I'll like it lol,,,, i really want to as my misses will kill me if I don't get out and use it 😂,
I found a very nice 1 oz of platinum the 1st day I got my new ace 400i detector :)) never give up guys really the only thing I will advise u is not to stop ! Lots of silver coins very old ones and other cool stuff to find into ground;) good luck guys
I agree with what he's saying 100% but 303 shells could be valuable if there in okay condition

Change your settings.... get the nails out on the deck burry them again about 4 inches and wave your detector back and forth, change the settings until you can't pick them up then you shouldn't did to many more! Good luck. :)

I find mostly nails and caps n tabs too. Yesterday I checked a small park and found all the above AND the bonus of a dirty old sweat sock! 😕 Someone explain to me how one sock ends up 6" underground?
I for one picked up my Nox 800 late July. 9 - 10 weeks now and frustrated...
It leaves more scope for us .some people just dont get it ,when were out on a sunny day looking at the scenery wherever we may be hunting ,to us it makes us glad to be above soil it doesn't matter if we dont find anything,its just been out there as you say .Hey funny enough the germans did develop a rifle that fired round corners it was an automatic to spray out of a section of tanks that had a blind spot because of the way they desighned the gun the russians tried to exploit this weak point by fire bombing the tank from up top the cannny devils .Nice vid as always take care Ant from sunny wales .

hi greetings from british columbia canada...nice vid am just getting into metal detecting ...i just bought a detector to look for gold nuggets on my gold claim on the fraser river ...but am also interested in looking for relics and coins else where...everything you said about metal detecting one can also say about gold panning...the priceless value is just being there in nature take a look at some of my vids to see b.c. beauty....mind you here ... we have to keep on our toes because we have bears and cougars..its all part of the out door experience ...you make nice engaging videos i like your sence of humour...must be nice finding roman coins and things ..its like time travel ..holding it in your hands ...and imagining its story falling out of someones pocket or? thanks again ...mickey miner
