Been trying to get that thing off for weeks! Was totally confused what to do! 3 minutes off & on with a good butane lighter and I could see bubbling at the top, screwed right off! This sure seemed easier than other videos drilling holes and sawing with blades! Thank you so much for the easy do it yourself tip, even I could use!

Excellent video - and I like that it is very recent. I wish I had watched it earlier; however, that said, I do have two new faucets and will be attaching the PK1390 on both. The tip about stopping the leak just below the knob was useful. Also, I was wondering what I was going to do with the side "screw" on the PK1390 and you gave the perfect answer and demonstration. Thank you for this video! For the life of me, I could not get that top piece off. I watched some other videos but none said to use heat. I heated it up with my multi-purpose lighter (clicker). It did take a lot longer than I thought it would, but it eventually got hot enough to twist that darn thing off. Lots of old red locktite came flaking out while turning. Thank you so much for this video!

Thanks. your video helped me. To add a datapoint, I used the lighter to heat up. it only took me like 5 minutes to heat it - much easier than i perceived. Just pay attention to the direction to turn the wrench before you actually hear it, as you don’t want to spend time to think as it rapidly cooling down.

One of mine is dripping really bad and the set screw is broken off so it doesn't budge when I try to unscrew it. Were you able to get yours off with the broken set screw just by heating it up? I thought that I would have to drill the set screw out or use a dremel to cut the vacuum breaker off but I don't have those tools.

Three days of screwing with mine. I tried everything to get the sucker off. I wish I had found this video first. I heated it up with a small torch and guess what.......it finally came off. Thanks for the video!

No, the Arrowhead breaker is designed with double check valves, one is a back flow preventer and one allows the hosebib to drain itself. The kind you mentioned doesn't allow it to completely drain. Here they are on Amazon amzn.to/2WYWnOi amzn.to/2WuUmuk
@@DIYOnTheHouse That is not the case: there are PLENTY of regular vacuum breakers that fit onto a regular 3/4" garden hose fitting for a FRACTION of the cost of the Arrowhead vacuum breaker: buy a spigotmaster and then add a more economical vacuum breaker. MUCH BETTER SOLUTION!

There is a rubber washer in the pk1390 so no need to seal. They are spendy!
I tried heating it with a torch but couldn't get it off myself. I had a plumber over at my house for an unrelated fix, but had him check out if he could get the top off. He used WD-40 and was able to get it off!

Appreciate the video. Why do these even fail to begin with? Is it because the rubber washers inside wear out? It sure would be ideal if the whole thing didn't need to be thrown away and replaced every so many years.

Very helpful video! When I first moved into my house, the spigot had a piece of garden hose attached that had been cut off by previous owners. It took me literally an hour of work (screaming and cussing the whole time) to remove what I thought was part of of old hose from the spigot, turns out it was a vacuum breaker. Had know idea what it was or why it was so hard to remove. Then more frustration when I noticed the threads didn't match my new hose and had to go buy another breaker. Wish I had found this video beforehand!
So are they supposed to have a bit of water pour out the top section when you turn the hose on? Also had water loudly burst out of the top section when I shut off the hose but still had the sprayer going - that's not normal right?

The Arrowhead vacuum breaker has 2 parts to it 1st part where the hose is connected is a check valve to prevent backflow, the 2nd part up at the spout is to drain the bib automatically when the pressure goes below I believe 5psi.
When you turn it on it activates the check valves and the release water until the rubber washer seats, and then when you turn it off it releases water once the pressure on the vacuum breaker goes down in psi. I know its a long story but that's what happens. They are messy but they save the bib from freezing and breaking in the house and flooding the house.
@4:50 when you turned on the water, at first it started leaking around the mid section. Is that normal ?? My old onenbroke and i installed a new one (same model). Its also leaking at low water pressure but i dont recall my old one doing that. Thank you!!
It will leak until the check valve is engaged with more water pressure. If it leaks under pressure a piece of debris may have got under the washer.
I haven't finished watching your video yet and maybe you will talk about it but I just purchased a brand new one of these (PK1390/59BFPCHR) to replace a decades old one that was split at the rubber gasket in between and was leaking everywhere and I cleaned the bib off beautifully and used pipe dope up as the instructions that came with it said to do and tightened it not too tight but decently tight with a pipe wrench and then tightened the additional retaining screw to hold it in place and it's spraying water out of the middle of the device like where the overflow or relief weep holes are :( why is a brand new unit leaking?!
Some times the rubber gets stuck to the brass. If you take it back off, push the 2nd washer from the top with your finger and it may free it and do the same thing from the hose connect side. If this doesn't work it's defective.
These things are straight up trash, just give me a regular spigot. Appreciate the video, saved me a ton of money.

Great video! Is it normal for the anti siphon valve to expel water (briefly) when you turn the hose off?
Just installed a new one. No longer leaks when hose is in use....but it shoots out water for 5-10 seconds as soon as I turn the spigot off
That is normal especially when a hose is connected. When you turn it off, the back pressure from the hose is relieved through the vacuum breaker.

Quick question: the instructions on the packaging of the breaker said to use pipe dope, however i dont see you having done that. I didnt do it either. Will that cause problems?
Nope. I've replaced hundreds of them and never an issue.
Is the spigot brass or aluminum because my leader hoses are all brass and I don't want the different metals to cause problems. Can I installed a brass drain back valve with fine thread to the spigot? Thx
Arrowhead bibs are all brass except the handle. If you replace the vacuum breaker it will have to be fine thread to connect it. Make sure you use the pk1390 breaker, it's a double check and self drains the bib. Single checks will leave water in the bib and will freeze and break in the winter.
Mine was stuck too and applying little bit of wd 40 did the charm

It wouldn't be worth repairing. It's possible that the brass has a groove for extended periods of leaking.
So, from the looks of it, the thing is designed to constantly leak water. Interesting. The proprietary thread mount was reason enough to avoid these things, but the leaking water is why I need to replace. Bummer. Thanks for the video
The replacement should only leak water when it is turned off, That would be the draining of the bib so it doesn't freeze and break during freezing temps.

Is there an Arrowhead PK1390 without the screw? I don't want to deal with trying to get the screw that's broken off out when time to replace.

Im just left my set screw out and used lock tite. Works great!
There actually apparently is (or was at least, decades ago) because the one I took off did not have a screw and just came off easily but all of the replacement ones I've seen have the retaining screw.
Used a blow torch to get the top part off, plumber was asking 175 per hour. Saved me a lot of cash!

I found the best way to fix this is to remove the back flow preventer as shown in the video, throw it in the trash, and replace it with an adapter (from Amazon) that eliminates the expensive back flow part. The backflow preventer will have to be replaced to pass inspection if you ever sell your house.
I know the design is a little wonky, but if it's replaced and working properly. It will save you from having a freeze and break during low temps. Which can cause major damage to the interior of the home. I have been a plumber for 25 years and very seldom do I have to replace this bib design from being frozen during the winter from someone leaving the hose attached.
Do I need to put Teflon around the spigot thread?
No, there should be a washer inside that will seal when you screw it on to the bib. Let me know if you have any other questions.

@@DIYOnTheHouse After struggling with this because the bottom half came off and I never realized that the top half was still on the spigot, I kept trying to find the part that would fit on the old top half of the PK1390. So, basically, I was buying the PK1390 and trying to fit it on the top half of the old PK1390. DUH!
Went to a plumbing store and they finally told me that the top half of the old one was still on there and I needed to remove it. Googled, found your video.
I got home this evening and went out there with my heat gun.....about 2-3 minutes later, came off like butter.
Now? Going to re-order the PK1390 from Amazon that I ordered a couple of weeks ago and sent back! Haaaaa.

How do you CUT OFF the top peice of the vacuum breaker if it won't thread off because the threads are damaged???
Do you know if there is a place on the top part that has a broken screw on it? If there is I use a small hack saw and cut a V at the broke screw and wedge it off with a flat screw driver and then it should unscrew.
Lol, the thread locker rusted out on both of my spigots so I just had to screw them out.

If it leaks around the shaft that the handle is attached to there should be a nut (packing nut) to snug up and it should stop. If the water is coming out a hold in the shaft then you will need to remove the handle and roll up teflon tape and jam it in the hole that attaches the handle, until its packed tight and reset the handle.

The constant leak will be the flat washer inside the bib. The stem will need to be removed and the washer replaced, if it has leaked for a long time it may have worn a groove in the brass seat and the bib will need replaced.

My faucet/spigot are in the recessed area that requires bending over every time and reaching under an awning - very awkward. I got a "hose bib extender" (www.amazon.com/Sun-Joe-SJ-SHSBB-Gry-Garden-Faucet/dp/B07GT79XD3) so that I can turn my water on/off from a slightly different location, but under pressure I noticed the spigot leaked. As I intended to leave this open all the time, I tried to fix the spigot (thought it was some weird aerator or something), but realized it was a vacuum breaker. Exact same model shown in your video. Is there a modification that would allow me to use the hose bib extender?

@@DIYOnTheHouse no on the siphon valve small dripping...is that normal...i have the same thing and wondering if I need to replace mine. Look at the video at the 5:12 mark.
If you connect a hose to the bib and turn it on it should have enough back pressure to trigger the check valves in the vacuum breaker. If it drips and runs, you need to change the vacuum breaker. If it is dripping 24 hours a day the problem is an internal bib problem. ( flat washer)

So there is a faucet that you can not attach a hose directly to. A vacuum breaker that either has threadlocker or a screw that breaks off making it difficult to remove. It also does not last so removal will be needed. WHY does anyone use these parts when you can just buy a ball valve faucet and make things easier?
Hose bibs that are in freeze areas may need to have the wall or siding opened up to replace the bib. So repair is cheaper.
Good video but these suck and should be removed and replaced with an adapter for a hose.
They are not fun, especially when they leak!
So the hose bib wasn't leaking, the vacuum breaker was leaking. So why name the video otherwise??
We are plumbing service contractors. And we try to title our videos the way customers describe the problem when they call in. So when someone is searching they will be able to find the video by the most common description they would type in.

WTF? Who has blow torch just laying around the house? And you've priven that blow drier doesn't do the same work as blow torch. So, sorry to burst your bubble, but this will not work for me unless I rent a blow torch get a quick lesson and hopefully I'll be able to.apply that knowledge. That said, this video is not conducive for everyone. 💯💯🤣🤣
Luckily, you can get a torch for around $18 on Amazon amzn.to/3BlMEVB - in the end, still quite a bit cheaper than paying $150+ to a plumber to repair.
I have multiple torches just like the one in this video... 🤷🏻♂
