This film came out in the summer between first and second grades for me. My dad wouldn't let me see it in the theater at the time, suggesting I watch the Adam West show instead. I did, and fell in love with that '60s classic. Then, when Tim Burton's Batman came to VHS, my dad viewed it and deemed it okay for me to watch. So, I did... and it became my obsession of that era. To this day, I still think Michael Keaton is the best live-action Batman and Jack Nicholson is the best live-action Joker. I love this movie, but I agree with all of the flaws of the film that you mentioned. It's not a perfect flick. It's the vibe of the movie I love so much. That 1940s gangster, noir vibe. I think Keaton is the coolest iteration of the character. Nicholson has the best combo of funny and scary (well, scary in their universe, not necessarily as a viewer). You can tell he was having a ball playing this role, which I think, as long as the script has him as a murdering psychopath, then having fun with your performance is essential. My favorite Bat-flick is Batman Returns, but Batman '89 is a close second. I see this interpretation as a tribute to the golden age, and for that, I still love it.

As someone who didn’t grow up with this one, I can’t say I love this movie. The problem is that Tim Burton didn’t seem interested in the character of Bruce Wayne or Batman. Bruce doesn’t really enter the story until about 25 minutes in and Bruce himself doesn’t have much of character arc. And when the director doesn’t seem to care about the main character, why should you? Now Jack Nicholson is fantastic of The Joker, the style is cool, and the score is pretty great, but this is far from a great Batman film. While I can’t deny the influence of this film, I certainly don’t love it. I just enjoy it enough.

    • @MichaelTomsyck
      @MichaelTomsyck 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@megamikethemovieman Bruce Wayne is a character who grows and changes in Nolan’s trilogy. In Batman 1989 and Batman Returns, Bruce doesn’t have much of a character arc. Batman as a character isn’t even that compelling in Burton’s films. In Batman Begins, we see Bruce’s origin of becoming Batman. His mind being shaped, him training, and him making connections with people. In Batman 89, Bruce is already Batman. There isn’t a story of becoming. For me, Batman Begins does an incredible job of the origin story that we can get fantastic villains in The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. But for me, you have your first film focus on Batman. Batman 89 doesn’t do that.

@@kellenpies160 As long as it’s focused on Batman, I’ll be very happy. I love origin stories, but The Batman being a crime detective story is something that sounds amazing. You don’t need to tell the exact same story in Batman Begins. That’s just repeating what Nolan did. But replacing that origin story with a detective story sounds awesome.

This movie is really good. Michael Keaton is a really interesting and different type of Bruce Wayne and an awesome version of Batman, and the movie does a good job of exploring his past. I don't even mind the change the change to his origin story. Tim Burton's directorial style works perfectly for Gotham City and the movie looks and sounds great. The side characters are pretty good, especially Knox, and I will always be disappointed that we never got to see Billy Dee Williams as Two-Face. The standout(outside of Bob the Goon) is Nicholson's Joker, who is so wonderfully freaky, weird, crazy, and hilarious. That said, the movie's focus is a bit off at points. It's called Batman, but it focuses more on the Joker's origin than Batman's, whose is left more ambiguous. Also, a bit less than half of the movie revolves around Vicki Vale, who is not interesting at all. She and Bruce have very little chemistry and the romance between the two is pretty rushed and uninteresting. I also don't like when Batman has a love interest who isn't Catwoman or Talia al Ghul. Vicki isn't the worst of these cinematic love interests, but she's somehow a huge focus that the two main characters are obsessed with for no reason.

I saw this movie back when I was 8 years old in the yr 2009, on home media and I loved it. Haven’t seen it in a while but I remember loving it as a kid, I always though Michael Keaton Batman was pretty badass, despite not having a lot of screen time or being the focus of the movie, which is one of the criticisms I do have for this film. He was intimidating, dynamic and classy as Batman, his voice was imo better than Christian bale’s or even Affeck’s. Another thing I liked about this movie is the production design that only a genius like Tim Burton could’ve made thanks to his unique vision and style. I love how this Gotham had a blend of both the 1940s and 1980s, with an architectural skyline that truly felt gothic and eerie, which makes this version of Gotham feel like it’s own city with character and personality. To top it all of, Jack Nicholson killed it as Jack Napier/Joker. Before heath ledger and Joaquin phoenix donned the makeup, Jack Nicholson gave us an eccentric and egotistical interpretation of the joker that’s remains the most traditional or comic book accurate version of the character. His creepy fixed smile, bleach white skin, his outfit, gadgets and his desire for power, money, even love (thanks to his creepy obsession with Vicky Vale) was very well performed by Jack Nicholson. This movie, along with Batman returns, the dark knight trilogy, the animated series and even the Lego Batman games introduced me to Batman.

What Burton saw Bruce as was a reclusive gothic figure Burtons Bruce never really bothered to be the playboy character he just hide from the public eye unless he had no choice. Burton always saw Batman and his world as a goth fantasy to him Batman was just the brooding reclusive antihero and the real people with characters were the villains who had the dimension while Batman just was always Batman.

They most certainly feel more focused on style over substance compared to giving us an emotional or complex storyline. Bruce never received any character development, we never get to learn much about him since he's constantly so distant and mysterious, never really cared about the Vicki Vale character or the romance, and Jack is good but he feels less like Joker and more Nicholson merely wearing clown makeup.

Even more funny I had already watched Batman Returns and Batman Forever before I saw this film from start to finish. I have enjoyed watching this one many times over the years. For a long time this was the only film I knew Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton for. I have quoted Batman’s first lines of the movie forever. “I’m not going hurt you, I just want you to me a favor, I want you tell all your buddies about” “Who are you” ? “I’m BATMAN”. I later found out that line was add-libbed by Michael Keaton. The actual line in the script was “I am the Night” Overall I enjoy this movie very much.

Very good review! I love Batman ‘89! I saw it when I was a teenager. The main reason was for Keaton and Nicholson. But as a film, it does not work. I feel that the story has no thru-line. It might’ve worked if we were following somebody else’s perspective like either Knox or Vicki. They’d be investigating the Bat sightings and we’d be discovering information as they began to piece the puzzle together. Then the Joker would enter the scene and there’d be another mysterious character for Knox/Vicki to learn about. The movie attempted this early on with Knox then gave up then tried later with Vicki. It’s a confused narrative. I agree the middle is very choppy and I feel probably should’ve been edited down more to give it a tighter pace. But I do have “nostalgia eyes” for this movie. Both Keaton and Nicholson are just so incredible in their roles!

Many of the flaws you stated hold true, especially the choppy-ness and lack of development for the characters. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed both Jack Nicholson as The Joker, and Michael Keaton as Batman. Neither one are my favorite for those characters but I think they both did an excellent job for the movie that they were in. Wished there had been a lot more of Michael Keaton’s Bruce Wayne, as you mentioned. No nostalgia glasses at all for me, so I found it mid-tier. enjoyable, but highly flawed. Love your videos, Sean!

Great review Sean! Spider-Man 2002 was the superhero movie of my childhood and I love that movie to death. I saw this movie as a kid and thought it was the coolest thing ever, as I got older I recognized its flaws and I don't think its great, but I find this movie to be really enjoyable. At 22:29 you talked about how Batman blowing up Axis Chemicals doesn't mean anything, I always thought he blew it up because he was trying to stop The Joker from poisoning the products and the chemicals he was putting into the products was coming from Axis Chemicals. Other than that I agree with almost everything you said. Can't wait for the review of Batman Returns!

I enjoyed your review. As a long term Batman fan (I was 16 when I saw it a dozen times at the cinema back in '89) your balanced views help me take off the nostalgia goggles. Tim Burton is a goth artist/writer first and foremost, you can see it in its aesthetic vision. I agree about style over substance. Could've done without the Prince elements also.
It set the tone of future Batmans however, so it is undeniably iconic and influential.

Hey, Sean! New fan of yours here! I've been a member of Cody's channel for years and have seen you on some collabs and 31 on 31! I'm 27, and I saw this movie when I was maybe 7 or 8. Only other batman I knew was the animated series. As I've gotten older I've become a huge batman fan and it's bc of this movie and that animated series. For kid me this movie was fun and eccentric and was awesome. Now this movie is a nostalgic nod. I still will have fun with it. My oldest son is 6 and he has gotten into batman and we watched this and he enjoyed it. As I'm watching it with him I'm realizing how much simply nostalgia I have for this. It's an okay movie with no real story. Jack Nicholson as the Joker is great to me. He plays it well(fan of the Shining as well). Michael Keaton is an iconic batman and I've heard people saying he's the best and all that. I don't see it. I like him and he's a good actor, but he tends to be the side character in both of his Batman movies. This movie is nostalgic and iconic for bringing us a darker tone of batman that most of us grew up loving that type.

It’s weird for me because I grew up in the 2000’s but Tim Burton’s Batman movies are the ones that I grew up watching the most, and like you Sean they were an important part of my childhood. I would say that Batman 1989 is my second favorite Batman movie. I love the Noir style that it has and both Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson just do a phenomenal job playing these characters. I'm 56 and I saw it when It came out and loved it, I just watched it today and I loved it. Among other things, few people mention the music by Prince !
When we watch it today, we have to remember this was the best of 1989. I liked the scene to scene action! cutting out the transitions to keep it moving and not boring, superhero movies ask you to use your imagination, like when you're reading the old-fashioned comic books, for it's time , I see it as groundbreaking. Today we incorrectly compare it to all the other movies that came later . The original Batman movie is a piece of art. It stands by itself, this is the movie that set up all the other future superhero movies that we enjoy today.

Batman '89 was the very first movie I ever saw and is what got me into the character of Batman, and into film altogether! Still love watching it multiple times a year to this day.
YES, I miss having that diet coke commercial and WB promo ad before the start of the movie!
I actually really love Dick Tracy, The Phantom, and The Shadow, but that's just me lol.
Big thank you to Michael Uslan for getting Batman into the movie world, starting with this gem (because I still think it holds up honestly -- like you said, mainly due to its extremely interesting and encompassing atmosphere).
Don't know if you're into cheesy and campy kaiju and monster movies, but Michael Gough (Alfred) appeared in an old one that was sort of meant as a King Kong rip off called 'Konga' that I thought was pretty fun (by no means a great movie though). He can also be spotted in Tim Burton's 'Sleepy Hollow' as well.
As for the flaws, I can definitely see your point with especially the love story being a weaker element. Personally though, whereas I can't disagree with the technicalities of what you said regarding the way the story unfolds, I always felt the story telling was pretty clear, and I think the episodic format was somewhat intended to reflect the old style of storytelling featured in the serials. That said, it's certainly not the most common or straightforward way to tell a story, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's something the movie got wrong.

And my Dad got me the poster with Keaton standing in front of the Batmobile. Great memories! I remember seeing Dick Tracey in theaters too. I always hated the character of Knox. In Retrospect, Kim Basinger is not very good in the movie, and I'm not sure Sean Young would have been any better. The story is kind of unfocused, and Bruce Wayne has no arc seeing as how he finds out Joker killed his parents at the very end. It is truly style over substance, but regardless the film still holds a place in my heart. If I recall on the dvd they said it was a writer's strike, and they started writing on set. As much as I love Cesar Romero and Jack Nicholson's Joker, Heath Ledger really did it the best and most realistic. Never really went campy or over-the-top.

I used to watch this a lot back when I was a kid, and I used to love it. Over the last 5-10 years I've really become a massive fan of Batman Returns more than 89, and I just stopped watching it. My opinions on the movie kind of wained as I hadn't watched it as an adult. Whenever I wanted to watch a Batman movie I would just watch Batman Returns or The Dark Knight. Then, in preparation for The Batman, I rewatched Batman 89. And I absolutely loved it. I was always very aware of how much influence this movie has had on the entire Batman character, but theres so much more to the movie as well. While the plot isnt the best, especially when compared to Batman Returns in my opinion, it has such an amazing vibe and atmosphere. And I have never appreciated Jack Nicholson's Joker enough. I just watched again last night. Haven’t seen it in a long time. I brought up some of the same criticisms to my wife while watching. Knox is a reporter in Gotham and has no idea what Bruce Wayne looks like or what happened to his parents?
I always had trouble deciding on who the best Joker is between Nicholson and Ledger. After rewatching, it’s Ledger. Jack does a great job but he comes off as a more serious but exaggerated version of Ceasar Romero. The character didn’t feel fully realized until the end and then he’s dead.
I still enjoy it but I agree, it doesn’t hold up that well compared to when I saw it as a kid.

@@megamikethemovieman its because he's left in the shadow, he's mysterious, his costume was amazing, and because his voice is perfect. Not going over the top and keeping it calm as well as being terrifying. Plus he and Kevin Conroy are the only Batman who can smile and still be scary!

This is my favorite movie of all time! This is the Best Batman movie ever, it’s the grandfather of all Superhero media we have today. The things he pointed out as flaws are the things that make the movie great. Would be fun to see a prequel with a de-aged Keaton.

I think that this movie is really good. I like Michael Keaton as Batman, and Jack Nicholson as The Joker. I love the soundtrack. Danny Elfman's score is iconic. I don't like how The Joker killed Bruce Wayne's parents. I also don't like how they made Bruce Wayne a rich guy who knows rich people and a lot of people don't know about his past. But other than that I still enjoy this movie for what it is. In fact I was just watching it and I finished it yesterday (I started watching it a few days ago) and it still holds up. It's one of the best Batman movies ever made.

@@thefilmwatcher1216 It sounds like the greatest movie never made. I'm thinking old school Spielberg, the one who melted Nazis and made the first 15 minutes of E.T. a horror film. Knowing Spielberg, his take would've focused on Batman as a parent rather than as a romantic or a detective...

I was bron in 2004 so I grew up with The Nolan trilogy and I watched this one long after it came out. When I first saw the film, I didn't think it was that good due to the lack of depth and organization in the writing so I definitely agree with your comments on the storytelling.

As I said when Cody Leach reviewed this, I absolutely love this movie. I've watched it so many times that I could probably quote and act out the while thing to you. Yeah, it's flawed, the story is problematic (likely because the script was rewritten constantly throughout shooting), and aspects of it have not aged well, but it's so entertaining and amazing on a visual level that I can forgive it.

23:34 I definitely agree with you Sean. (P.S. I never grew up with this film; first saw it around the release of "The Dark Knight") As someone who also watched Robert Meyer Burnett's video on Batman '89, I'd also add that this (and the Batman quadrilogy) have one major problem: as audience viewers, we are only spectators, not active participants. One of the reasons I love "Mask of the Phantasm" is because I felt like I was a part of the story. I understood and cared with Bruce Wayne, deciding with him about what path he wants to take, and I felt sad that (⚠️⚠️SPOILERS ALERT⚠️⚠️)
Bruce and Andrea are not together again. Even with the Joker, I understood what his goals were. In my opinion, "Mask of the Phantasm" is better than "Batman" (1989) because the former film was made by people who both cared for the character and those same people struck an excellent balance between style and substance.

I don't own any batman films except for batman forever so I don't have a particular affection for any of them and in the case of Batman 89 I've watched it 3 times in its entirety and to sum it up for me its quite simply good but not great. The story's weak and there's a lot that's unexplained but the good outweighs the bad with 89. It looks great, sounds great, features 2 great performances from the hero and the villain and has many memorable aspects , too many I think to dismiss it as anything less than a good movie. It's definitely a must see whether you're a superhero fan or not just for the experience but it's definitely not as good as say superman the movie or the dark knight because of the story.
