Leading up to the release of Christopher Nolan's Tenet, I'm reviewing each of his films in release order. We're in week 4, so today we're talking BATMAN BEGINS! This film was Nolan's first BLOCKBUSTER and set the stage for him to become the legendary director of The Dark Knight and Inception.
    SUMMARY
A young Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) travels to the Far East, where he's trained in the martial arts by Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson), a member of the mysterious League of Shadows. When Ducard reveals the League's true purpose -- the complete destruction of Gotham City -- Wayne returns to Gotham intent on cleaning up the city without resorting to murder. With the help of Alfred (Michael Caine), his loyal butler, and Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), a tech expert at Wayne Enterprises, Batman is born.

    I absolutely love Batman Begins.
I'll never forget watching the teaser trailer for it, and I was surprised at how different the Batman mythology would be onscreen.
I'll say this until the end of my life: Christian Bale IS Batman. The complexity, the subtle rage, the darkness inside and the mental drama perfectly encapsulates what Bruce Wayne/Batman is.
All due respect to Michael Keaton, Ben Affleck & Robert Pattinson, but Christian Bale will forever be THE Batman.
Thanks to this movie, I became a Batman fan again (after the abomination known as Batman & Robin)!

Batman Begins was the Batman movie that introduced me to Batman, and it’s my 2nd favorite Batman movie behind the dark knight. To me, Batman Begins feels and looks the most like a comic book outta the Nolan trilogy and I love the origin story for this movie and how they ground Batman in dark, serious and relatable way not seen before. Thank you Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale, Hans Zimmer, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Katie Holmes, Morgan Freeman, and Cillian Murphy for giving us one of the best superhero origin movies ever put on screen!

There are multilayered characters, expertly acted, great storytelling, practical effects over CGI. It's a comic book movie, but it's grounded in reality. Nolan is the best!

Hey Sean! Great video, I agree with almost everything you said. I love BB, I think it is the best superhero origin story movie ever.
I disagree with your complaint about the fight scenes tho. Nolan intentionally made them very quick cut to emphasise how batman moves like this ferocious animal whenever he fights and how the thugs see him fight from their perspective. For me it worked, but if it didn't for you I respect your opinion.
I've never really understood the complaints about the fight scenes in this trilogy. They perfectly fit the gritty and realistic tone of the films and they feel so raw and hard hitting, they're not meant to be very stylish and overly choreographed like in BVS and the batman Arkham games

I would honestly go as far as to say that this is the most underrated and under appreciated comic book movie of all time. If this movie didn’t do as good as it did, who knows when we’d see Batman again

Unpopular opinion-I had grown to see the entire Burton/Schumacher movie franchise as a narrative underachievement. What I have always felt was the single most compelling aspect of Batman as a character, and essential to give weight to his psychological depth, is that he’s a product of his own hard work. Batman Begins nailed that aspect perfectly, and became my dream come true. The first thing I did after watching it was send Joel Schumacher (RIP) a THANK YOU letter.

Really good review. One cast member that wasn't mentioned in the review that I really like is Ken Watanabe. He makes a memorable impression with his small amount of screentime, but I think he should of been used more in the film. I thought the direction they took with the fight scenes wasn't perfect, but it was interesting and some of the fights were exciting.

Batman Begins is beyond phenomenal and did everything needed to make the Dark Knight the epic classic that it is.
The emotional, moral, and intellectual torment the Joker causes is predicated on Bruce’s ideals and journey to becoming a hero who wants to deliver justice to Gotham without compromising himself in the process.
His journey to that makes for a masterpiece in the Dark Knight

I’d say the first 45 minutes where he trains in the league and we learn about his family and how he got to where he was is top tier. The next 45 minutes I feel like are a bit slow and for me, (since I watch a lot of MCU), it was a bit too dark and hard to see what’s going on (but the chase scene was outstanding) but the last 40 minutes are top tier once again.
      Overall: 9.5/10 < A+

Although I know people don’t like the actor that plays Rachel in this one, she absolutely KILLS it with Bale in the final kiss scene. It just shows how Batman can never be happy anymore because Bruce Wayne is truly dead, and just a facade at that point.

I love Batman Begins. Such a classic. Second best Batman film to me. My only issue with the film is the action is a bit choppy and Rachel is too simple of a character. I love Ra’s Al Gual as the villain. He’s a dark mirror to Bruce. Someone motivated by tragedy trying to end crime. The difference between him and Bruce is how they to about it. Bruce’s arc and overall characterization is fantastic. Overall directing is pretty good and cinematography was good.

Love the review and I wholeheartedly agree with the notion of it being a Batman specific movie. I like the idea of making the action look chaotic from falcone’s POV , however, I agree action wasn’t Nolan’s strongest suit in the trilogy but I did love the dark knight rises sewer fight being rough and hard to watch rather than flashy and epic.

    My biggest unpopular opinion
Nolan is my favourite director - Inception, Memento & The Dark Knight are my favourite films of all time
but I am not huge fan of Batman Begins, I love it when I watch it but after a while I completely forget about this film, the campy 3rd act leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and sometimes I think about that we could have gotten more films in line of Inception, Intersteller from Nolan instead of Batman Begins & The Dark Knight Rises. But at the same time Nolan wouldn't get that much money from WB if it wasn't for the success of Batman.

this movie was really influential , Casino Royale got its origin arch from this film. Taking everything back to basics , love seeing Richard Donner and Chris Nolan talk to each other about problems and solutions with Superman 78'. Sean is right about Batman 89', it is a fun movie but it is a Joker movie.

Great review as usual, Sean! This is my favourite out of the Nolan trilogy. It's the one that feels the most like a comic book.
I also think that Katie Holmes was good in this movie. Not amazing, but good overall. One of my only critics on TDK is Maggie Gyllenhaal. I hate recasting actors. I also think that the romance between Bruce and Rachel is underdeveloped, but that is just a nit-pick on my part.
Otherwise, excelent movie from begginning to end.
PD: I don't care about the audio as long as you keep giving us great reviews -like this.

Batman Begins, alongside Iron Man, is the perfect origin story of a superhero ever made. Storytelling, character arcs, performances, themes of embracing fear and letting go of the past, and a grounded take on an iconic hero make for one of the best superhero films of the modern era.

  • @intelligencecycle3523
    @intelligencecycle3523 4 ปีที่แล้ว

One of my favorite Superhero origin stories ever made, personally this is my favorite of the TDK trilogy because the tech design more the executed the realistic factor. Plus dark gritty atmospheric side of comic books. Grabs inspiration from The Punisher etc.. I'd agree on the combat jujitsu fight portion.

  • @jordansweet8054

Great video, Sean. You've nailed it. For my friends, this was one of the first"big boy" movies for us,along with Revenge of the Sith,Spiderman 2 & 3 and Iron Man. Good script, great actors,
Engaging world and that tumbler chase is always exciting. I'm guessing they changed the set-piece so it seemed less like a Bourne movie but that's just a guess. I think you can tell Nolan was just starting out with action and the choreography is dated. The third act is a little preposterous in terms of stakes. It's the same problem Spiderman and X-Men had. The sequels just did everything better for me. I love this movie. 9.5/10
I think Bale lose weight because they changed the suit to be more flexible in the sequels, hence the joke in TDK about moving his neck. That's what I read in the bts.

I absolutely loved it when it came out. Completely obsessed with it to the point I just about know the script off by heart. I Love that it made me care about Bruce and Batman, love the independent art house feel it has to it and love any scene with Crane/Scarecrow. It also has my favourite cast for a comic book movie ever. Most of the actors were people who I was already a big fan of. The issue that I have now is that for years it was my favourite Batman movie but on current re watches its fighting against The Dark Knight for that title.

  • @TheBoysArchived

I frickin love this movie. I didn’t love the big battle for Gotham’s fear gas water supply thing at the end. But I absolutely love the parts showing him working towards becoming Batman. And I also LOVE the parts of him just taking out street crime, it feels like a grounded gritty realistic Batman. I love Batman begins because it understands the Bruce Wayne character greatly, and I love the dark knight because of the narrative themes in it. I wasn’t a big fan of TDKR but I did like the theme of failure and legacy.

Just saw it again after many years (as part of my own pre-Tenet Nolan marathon). It's probably my age (I was a Batman comic fan in the 60s and grew up with the camp 60s TV series) but I just don't much care for comic book movies (which mostly seem to be made for younger male audiences). I've always made a partial exception for Batman, though, because of the inherently haunted/psychologically complex side of the character.
That Nolan gave the movie with a neo-noir feel and made it with his usual verve made it particularly appealing to me (as comic book movies go), though I too found the car chase over-the-top and the treatment of the violence a bit too celebratory to my taste (probably also an age thing). I'm not against seeing violence in a movie but I prefer it to leave me feeling it as a punch to the gut, not as a "high" to be savoured (by some). Based on my parallel pre-Dune marathon of Villeneuve's work, I'll take his treatment of violence over just about anyone else's (including Nolan's).
Up next: The Dark Knght (which I haven't seen since it was first in theatres). I do remember it fondly, though.

I love this movie. I too am a big fan of well-written origin stories (Probably why Arrow is one of my favorite TV Shows) and Batman begins does it so well. As for the car chase scene, I do agree its a tad out of character and I notice that every time I rewatch this film, but maybe an easy explanation could just be Bruce trying to figure out how to really be batman and also I think it was more largely because Rachel was almost dying and he wasn't thinking clearly, he even says that to Alfred when Alfred confronts him about the mayhem he left behind and that was his reasoning.
Also, you gotta give my man Cillian Murphy some props, my favorite "underrated" actor, and I love his portrayal as Scarecrow in the trilogies especially Batman begins.
