  • Lost Foam Casting using aluminum. Casting a few Father's Day Gifts. Instead of giving dad a boring tie or ear hair trimmer - why not create something cool out of metal! That's exactly what I did. Watch me turn a bunch of foam and a pile of cans into a super cool belt buckle and paperweight!

    That looks like fun. I am going to give it a go, Did You buy the crucible or make it. I heard you could make them, but I have not tried. I assume it would be ok to just heat it with my forge standing on end. The is a great way to make buckles. I forged a few but they take too long to make. There is the ability to make more than one identicalky. Thanks for the demo, I subbed and Liked... Be well....

      @eviltwinx  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Thanks. I bought the crucible and it was around $35. I highly recommend buying one especially if you’re going to be casting on a regular basis. Lost foam casting are one offs. If you wanted to make several buckles, you would make a pattern and do sand casting. That’s my next step.

      Thanks! Yea, lost foam in sand makes for a super rough casting but I like that look as well. It definitely feels hand crafted and not store bought. I hope you give it a try!

    Looking for howto's on casting belt buckles and look who I came across. ;-) How the heck have you been?
    I do want to know how that loop held up. I assume there isn't any real pressure on it so it stays in fairly well?

    • @eviltwinx
      @eviltwinx  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man! Funny that I come up in the search since google doesn't like my posting frequency. Just been so busy with life and a new job that making videos has taken a back seat for now. My Dad doesn't wear his buckle everyday but it seems to be holding up very well. One thing I would change is how wide the loop is. Tighter is better or the buckle will droop a little.

    did a good job. now i need to be finding out how i want to make the tongs for the crusible you sent me. for lifting the crusable and pureing

    • @eviltwinx
      @eviltwinx  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, for the lifting tongs, you can go simple and just use a post hole digger if you have one around. You can even use it to pour if you're careful enough. I do have some older build videos you can take a look at.

      I might of missed this comment so sorry for the late response. I fabricated both the tongs and pouring shank. If you're interested, I have older videos of how I did them.

      @claytonrealist8868 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dwight G he made them (earlier video). But it is lift out with one set then pour with another. Still a nice setup.

    i have a question. I tried a lost foam casting with plaster of Paris (basically the same thing as drywall mud) and it was a disaster. I think my styrofoam absorbed some of the water, and I didn't give it enough time to dry. So here's the question. After you put the drywall mud on, how long do you let it dry? Hours? Days?

    • @eviltwinx
      @eviltwinx  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ChiaraDental - I've only tried the drywall method once on another project and let it sit for a few days. The casting didn't turn out so well either. But yea, you need to make sure the coating is completely dried or the moisture will boil when the AI is poured. Don't give up and try it again.

    • @kevinjohnson7621
      @kevinjohnson7621 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      you only need a very thin coat of plaster, try using paint primer instead of water when you mix. use a little water if it needs to be thinner. i have not tried this primer mix yet but it is used on Luciano you tube channel, it should dry quicker.

    that belt buckle came out great I was wondering what kind of cement did you use for your The Crucible and Forge

    • @eviltwinx
      @eviltwinx  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I didn't mess around with a home brewed refractory cement. I bought a castable cement called Mizzou Kast-O-lite 30 and behind that is a 2" layer of KaoWool insulating blanket. A Salamander Clay Graphite Crucible is what I'm using.

      heath nors reaper forging Glad I can help! Check out alloyavenue.com. Tons of info. Also, most of my furnace and burner design was based on this guys series - th-cam.com/video/gFOq88iQg60/w-d-xo.html.
      My future projects are more casting, working on the blacksmith shop, doing some more blacksmithing, and trying to finish up my Atlas lathe restoration. Whew- lots to do with little free time to do it!

    Is the "pitting" in the middle from gas in the metal, gas from the foam, or from loose sand flowing in?

    • @eviltwinx
      @eviltwinx  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! It's hard to say for sure but I think it's probably from both the gas in the metal and the foam vaporizing. For this pour, I took a chance and didn't degass since any pitting would work with the rough look I was going for.

    • @OldIronShops
      @OldIronShops 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +eviltwinx it's probably hydrogen contamination should look for Flux and degasser from budget casting.

    • @eviltwinx
      @eviltwinx  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris Anderson I normally do flux and degass but just ran with it this time. I wasn't too concerned with the finish since I wanted it "rough" looking.

    nice job outta check out Petra bond sand you get beer detail in your parts

    • @eviltwinx
      @eviltwinx  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do have Petrobond. I'm saving it for when I make a real pattern and need a great finish. Doing lost foam stinks up the sand like you wouldn't believe. I'm ok with that with the sand I get from HD - not so much with my Petrobond. Heh.
