- It took me 3 attempts to finally get it to work out the way i liked.
lost foam casting with brass is more difficult than aluminum. At least for me.

I have a brotherinlaw who worked in gray iron casting and then they transitioned to aluminium just before he got out of there. It is very interesting how different metals react when casting them. Keep up the great videos and God bless you and your family.

I was making branding irons on my plasma table. I found that the infill area that is not the lettering tends to scorch the meat, the brands that were only the letters did a beautiful job branding but that part of the steak was nearly inedible. Think chewing on a leather belt. Learning lots! thanks Steve. David
Cheers David. I made a couple with the plasma out of 1/4 plate but cant get the finer detail like these. it works pretty decent on wood. never thought of doing a steak lol.

Yeah i dont know. more dense but smaller area. The brass freezes up quick. im thinking maybe bigger sprues and shorter length. ive been burying them in pretty deep. not sure that helps or not. Going to go back to aluminum for the next couple things i got in mind. looking forward to the calmness haha

Just subscribed buddy . I like the build up to the success and it help save me a lot of time i think before i head out this week and give it a go. I have done machine parts with out a coating in this method but am excited to do a run of belt buckles next week thin layers of drywall mud. hey I notices in 13:14 there is dross coming off the top of the pour, perhaps this may be a factor as well in jamming up the pours.
Hey I subbed back. I try and watch all the casting videos I can. I've been struggling with brass for sure. You could be right about the dross. I need to make a better tool for skimming for sure. I've had another experienced guy suggest i may be pouring too cold. The coatings make a world of difference, especially using dry sand. A spritz of soapy water on the foam before coating will help prevent bubbles. Im still learning and experimenting. You should check out Kelly Coffield. he's been a huge help to me. That street copper brand came out really cool! Kudos for sticking it out after having a couple not turn out so good. I like that you include that stuff too and how you fixed the problem. I've never used brass before. How do you like using it compared to aluminum and copper?
When you have the leftover metal spillover at the top of the casting and mix with the sand, how do you separate the sand from the molten metal when you melt it again? Your videos are making me want to try this.

Thanks Craig. brass seems to freeze up quicker than aluminum. its been a learning curve. I wanted to keep the vid short but it is useful for anyone who wants to learn.
I'm not a fan of pouring the brass. the zinc fumes are a bit to get used to for sure. makes it hard to see what your doing. the final piece is definitely cool and makes it worth it though. I also have 3-4 hundred pounds saved up haha. nice to use it.
Sand and stuff mainly just floats in the dross. not a problem.
I'll be trying aluminum bronze here soon. I'm looking forward to that. I'm feeling pretty good about my technique now. think im getting it dialed in. Cheers

Nice video, I also want to try this at home and this video is full of good tips. I was wondering what type of sand you use? Is this special sand for casting?
Thanks man. It is just dry sand. No clay. Beach sand basically but I sifted it down to as fine as I could with a kitchen screener. I bit of vibration is recommended to stiffen it up

Ive had those in the works for months. finally got around to it and failed lol. then failed again and partially failed again. probalbly done 1 month of camping the summer and now Been busy pouring concrete. wife thinks im a contractor/landscaper. I got some more ideas in the works. hopefully again soon. cheers friend
