This sandwich was invented to feed long-haul truckers, so that they can have one hand on the steering wheels. The entire meal has to fit in one hand. Yes, I'm from Pittsburgh.
Yeah I am surprised they didn't explain that every sandwich comes with fries and the coleslaw on the sandwich. I lived there and my Stepdad is from McKeesport Pennsylvania.
My understanding of the history is that they wanted to make a sandwich you can eat with one hand. They had truck drivers in mind. That is why the sides(fries and slaw) are inside the sandwich. Also you can order any kind of meat and cheese for your sandwich. Pastrami, corned beef, capicola, steak, sausage even eggs. It is always on that Italian bread and has fries and slaw inside.
First off I love Primanti Bros sandwichs. My wife is from Western PA and introduced me to them. They actually have become somewhat of a chain now or at least licensed one as there are now Primanti Bros as far east as York PA. Not a gripe, but piling sides on sandwiches isn't exclusive to Primanti Bros. Hell, I've been doing it since I was a child, long before I ever even heard of them. The best part of the story though is that they had the truckers in mind when they started doing it. God bless the truckers and all that they do. Unsung heroes in this country.
When I first went to Pitt in the 80’s, my friend HAD to take me to Primanti Bro’s. I think we had alcohol and wings, but really don’t remember, lol. One of my best trips to the town. When I have ever been to McDonalds, I would always put my fries on my burger! Called it a McFrench, lol. A GREAT concoction! A GREAT sandwich!
Didn't read all the comments, but did anyone point out that the sandwich is meat, cheese, tomato, fries and tangy COLESLAW (not onion rings). Btw, corned beef or pastrami are the best.
The original Primanti Brothers is in the Strip District. It used to be a sandwich shop. The sandwich evolved from truckers coming into the city. They would order the sandwich that came with fries and coleslaw on the side.Truckes would be in a hurry and some would say put the fries and coleslaw on the sandwich so they can eat while driving. Eventually everyone would order it that way and that is how the famous Primanti Brothers Sandwich was evolved. If you want the real deal go to the Strip District.
My wife and I had our first sandwich at the Strip District location. Every Yinzer told me that was the only location to go to. It was the best sandwich I have ever had. The best steak was at Mike's. Loved the cooking stone. We also loved the frech fries on pizza. Can't wait to go back.
I’m from around the Pittsburgh area. Have been going to the og on 18th street for a while. I know that’s the story, but I do not recommend eating this on the go in your car 🤣
One time I was at an Omni Hotel restaurant in Indianapolis over Spring Break (men's basketball tournament) and ordered a club sandwich. It came with everything like a Primanti sammich. Of course being a yinzer, I had to get it all put on the sandwich. Then the wait staff saw me eating this and figured out I was from the Pittsburgh area.

Living in the state of Washington,I never thought I could say I had eaten at one of the places you reviewed. But I have been to Primante Brothers while visiting relatives in Pittsburgh.I had pizza there after seeing the guy in the back tossing the dough in the air.Pretty good pizza.
Primanti Brothers started making there sandwiches with the fries and some have slaw on them because of a trucker that stopped in and requested his sandwich that way. He said it would be easier to eat while driving.
Started in Pittsburgh, but they have a bunch of locations outside it. Couple in Fort Lauderdale, one in Hagerstown, MD, around Scranton, Erie, State College, Lancaster, Harrisburg. Many more.
