Agreed. I grew up watching the cocaine-inducted promos of Hogan, Savage, Warrior, etc. where wrestlers just shouted for 30 seconds. And while I have some nostalgia for those, I'd much rather hear a promo where there's actually a message conveyed. Not simply "I'M COMING FOR YOU! RAAARRR!"
Bret was Jacked in the 90’s. I met him at the Molson Indy in Toronto 1999. I just started lifting as a kid. I asked him how he got big. He said do compound lifts and eat Canadian beef. We both laughed. Nicest wrestler in the world.
As short as it was, I realize now after rewatching it just how good the feud between Bret and Austin was. It had a realism that few other rivalries could reach.

He was ahead of his time, and if he had been in a position to feud with Benoit, Angle, and Lesnar in the early 2000s I think his promos would have stood out for the right reasons
Bret hart is my favorite singles wrestler of all time. He’s an inspiration and even relatable to non wrestlers because he’s an example of a man that worked 110% to succeed at everything.
Harley Race, Terry Funk, Kurt Angle, Dory Funk Jr.....but I have seen Bret do some corny stuff now and then; but even so, Bret's matches were always fun to watch! [UPDATE] I can't believe I left out BOB BACKLUND and RICK MARTEL(Backlund was better when he stuck to wrestling because he didn't punch and his forearms looked sloppy!)

I met Bret Hart last Thursday at the hitman bar, he was so nice to me. He is a class act and much nicer than a lot of wrestlers(Ric Flair, Goldberg). It is a such a cool bar if you're a Bret Hart fan. The bartender told me and my brother is that Bret is there every Thursday. Bret Hart is a legend

Canadian here. If you recall Bret's documentary "Wrestling With Shadows" he was very apprehensive about going on television and slamming the United States-- at least early on. His mother Helen was from New York.
but it was a good thing he did it...he was the most popular babyface around the world at that time. I remember them doing their European tour that year and every time the New Hart Foundation came out the roofs would blow off the places.

Heel Bret is not wrong. Im 33. Raised in Flair country. Saying that a majority of Americans are "nob heads," is putting it mildly- and an understatement. Nearly everything George Carlin said about Americans is true for about 9 out of 10 of us. Education, healthcare, poverty, homelessness, respect for each other, etc.- we suck at all of it.
For being a psuedo-heel promo slash interview it is kind of neutral mainly because JR is asking very neutral style questions until the Shawn Michaels stuff then the whole can of worms were opened.

Bret Hart and Steve Austin will always be the joint GOAT for me. So many memories of those two from back in the day, and their rivalry will stand the test of time as a masterclass in how to do pro wrestling. It was genius storytelling.
I have to say I seen some of these interviews and Bret and Macho seem to produce the most natural conversations. I think these 2 wrestlers really lived their characters and they talk about them like they been competing for real all these years, as a fan this is music to my ears and makes me have an amazing appreciation for these wrestlers.

Watching this it seems like Bret is mostly in character here and while he has different answers in his book i think it can be understandable since this feels like its in character and perhaps he's changed his mind over things from that to his book writing

I love watching Bret Harts matches that fans filmed on handheld cameras. There's a brilliant iron man match between him and Owen. Also the Royal Rumble Owen won that wasn't shown on t.v.

What I like is it looks like Bret is watching his own interview lol. The part with Taker I will say my favorite match between them was at One Night Only in 97. Bret is one of those guys that you knew he was great, was great and you find out things in his career that makes you appreciate his greatness even more.
Shawn will always be my favorite but Bret is a legend and his career has aged like wine! Bret the very definition of "A superstar" and heel Bret was cool 😎
I can't say this enough - for anyone who has yet to read Bret's book - go read it. Fantastic from start to finish and it's given me such a huge appreciation for a guy who truly dedicated himself to this business. Also, Wrestling with Shadows is fantastic. Also, also, heel Bret is so underrated it's not even funny.
The British bulldogs were one of the greatest tag teams ever. Hart foundation as well. I grew up watching these two teams go at it and I can tell you they were ahead of their time.
I was 21 when this came out. Had it on VHS and DVD. It was quite a big deal when it came out. I remember the talk about taker breaking character. Loved this.
I think maybe one day you should review in a long video Brets main 5 dvds (wrestling with shadows, the 2005 one, hart family, Bret Shawn rivalry, dungeon collection). 😉✌🏻

I just wanna say, he's clearly in character here, as stated in the video, his book tells his true feelings on things but I wouldn't doubt that some of that is real, he took it real seriously.
Bret’s logic for the iron man match makes total sense especially for a heel. He’s saying he had to pace himself similar to a boxing match so that if he gets pinfalls/knockouts as soon as possible he hasn’t emptied the tank for when he’ll still need energy to defend himself or go on the attack later in the hour Where as if it was a 60 min time limit match he could just go in as normal and when he exerts all his energy for the finish he’d do just that and finish the match. One second you say you understand he’s working heel then the next you don’t and even with being heel out of the equation it still makes since if you watch any combat sports like mma or boxing. Not using all your energy is the first thing they teach you which is why most long bouts start off slow with a bunch of feeling out rds to ensure they can still have energy to keep their hands up and defend themselves till the end. Your logic don’t make sense not Brets wether what he said was true or not or how he really felt or not you big Jabroni.
Bett Hart's legacy will never fade !!! He will forever be a template of what to strive to be as a pro wrestler . Love him or hate him you cant deny how great he was in the ring . I cant even imagine any student of the game disagreeing with that .

Never owned this tape but I remember very well how parts of these were reused for the Bret & Shawn Survivor Series 97 video packages and also for the Best of Wrestlemania & Best of Survivor Series tapes from 98 (the latter being for Taker Vs. Hogan).
I grew up a hard-core wrestling fan. My first love was WWF. My first ever favorite was the Warrior around the time if Mania 6 hecause I just wasn't a hulkamaniac. 2 years or so later it dawned on 8 year Mez just how awesome Bret Hart was. To watch him grow from a tag champion, to an INCREDIBLE IC champion, and by 1992, just s few years since Mania 6, Bret won his first world title from , of all people, Ric Flair ! The 9 year old Mark is me cried when Bret got screwed at WM9 I was lucky to be born in a generation that saw so many incredible careers, blossom in front of my eyes !
If you are not an oldschool fan from the 80s or early 90s , Piper vs Hart may not sound that appealing . But I promise you its great . All the little things both guys do in all facets leading up to the finish all tells a fantastic story . And every move they do makes sense in telling said story . Which you dont see much of in that type of detail today .

People can put down Bret Hart but 1997 was his year. He was incredible in 97 in and out of the ring. This heel turn was what he desperately needed.

@@dexenationgracey1979 Pretty much after Wrestling with Shadows was out of the bag. The main exception would be Shawn keeping making allusions here and there, especially regarding Vince's position, in 97.
There's also the fact that the book came out post-Montreal Screwjob & post-Owen tragedy when Bret was very much bitter & broken (and to be perfectly honest, rightfully so, given the circumstances), whereas none of that stuff had happened yet (these interviews were before Summerslam, so before Austin's neck injury accident caused by Owen's Sit-Out Tombstone & obviously, before the Montreal Screwjob happened at Survivor Series).
This man made me fall in love with wrestling. Still my favorite wrestler til this day. The best there is best there ever will be
I love watching Bret Harts matches that fans filmed on handheld cameras. There's a brilliant iron man match between him and Owen.
Also the Royal Rumble Owen won that wasn't shown on t.v.

What I like is it looks like Bret is watching his own interview lol. The part with Taker I will say my favorite match between them was at One Night Only in 97. Bret is one of those guys that you knew he was great, was great and you find out things in his career that makes you appreciate his greatness even more.
Shawn will always be my favorite but Bret is a legend and his career has aged like wine!

Shawn had the luxury of coming back from his issues being much stronger, but Bret had a concussion and stroke and didnt have that same longevity. IMO.
This is also around the time they fought in real life bret and Shawn so I could understand the anger he had

I can't say this enough - for anyone who has yet to read Bret's book - go read it. Fantastic from start to finish and it's given me such a huge appreciation for a guy who truly dedicated himself to this business.

I'm about to turn 35 in a few months, and to this day Bret is still my all time favorite. He was my hero growing up
The British bulldogs were one of the greatest tag teams ever. Hart foundation as well. I grew up watching these two teams go at it and I can tell you they were ahead of their time.
I was 21 when this came out. Had it on VHS and DVD. It was quite a big deal when it came out. I remember the talk about taker breaking character. Loved this.
WM 8 Piper vs Hart should have been 2nd to last and Savage vs Flair should have been main event. Hogan vs Sid was mid card at best at WM8. My opinion

With the exception of bulldog, excerpts from those interviews are used on the best of wrestlemania vhs/dvd they put out in the attitude era.
To be fair Bret was a heel at this point so him making excuses for the Iron Man match. It fit his character.
As an American, every word said by heel Bret Hart is pretty on the money.

Bret’s logic for the iron man match makes total sense especially for a heel. He’s saying he had to pace himself similar to a boxing match so that if he gets pinfalls/knockouts as soon as possible he hasn’t emptied the tank for when he’ll still need energy to defend himself or go on the attack later in the hour
Where as if it was a 60 min time limit match he could just go in as normal and when he exerts all his energy for the finish he’d do just that and finish the match. One second you say you understand he’s working heel then the next you don’t and even with being heel out of the equation it still makes since if you watch any combat sports like mma or boxing.
Not using all your energy is the first thing they teach you which is why most long bouts start off slow with a bunch of feeling out rds to ensure they can still have energy to keep their hands up and defend themselves till the end.
Your logic don’t make sense not Brets wether what he said was true or not or how he really felt or not you big Jabroni.

Never owned this tape but I remember very well how parts of these were reused for the Bret & Shawn Survivor Series 97 video packages and also for the Best of Wrestlemania & Best of Survivor Series tapes from 98 (the latter being for Taker Vs. Hogan).
This is really cool. I’ve always seen small clips of these but could never find where they came from.

I grew up a hard-core wrestling fan. My first love was WWF. My first ever favorite was the Warrior around the time if Mania 6 hecause I just wasn't a hulkamaniac.
2 years or so later it dawned on 8 year Mez just how awesome Bret Hart was. To watch him grow from a tag champion, to an INCREDIBLE IC champion, and by 1992, just s few years since Mania 6, Bret won his first world title from , of all people, Ric Flair !

If you are not an oldschool fan from the 80s or early 90s , Piper vs Hart may not sound that appealing . But I promise you its great . All the little things both guys do in all facets leading up to the finish all tells a fantastic story . And every move they do makes sense in telling said story . Which you dont see much of in that type of detail today .
