  • My friend Nino brought over another of his cars for us to shoot. I've never driven a Cobra in my life so this was a real treat. Roush 427...over 500 hp in a 2400 lb car can only be a ton of fun!
    Enjoy!!

      I have a 427 replica, but it was made in England (with left hand drive) by Cobretti Engineering in 1986 using a 1976 Jaguar XJ6 chassis and a 1986 Morgan Plus 8 engine (the 4 liter version) and gearbox (a classic replica made of classic car parts!) While only about 260 hp it is fun and, with straight through 3" side-pipes sounds cool. It still attracts looks and thumbs up.

      @@AutotopiaLA yes. You can see it's a beautifully built car, even though it is indeed a kit. I've seen a couple of well built kits with Jaguar V12s in, only I find that it doesn't correspond well, due to there being no overlap in time. AC built the last Cobra in 1969 and the first Jag V12 didn't see a public road until around 1971...

      @@julianneale6128 There are a variety of "replica" Cobras available, perhaps most notably Factory Five, Superformance, and Backdraft. However, in terms of assembly, only the Factory Five is an actual kit, with the vast majority of assembly done by the owner, as compared to Backdraft and Superformance which are essentially sold as completed cars.

    Great review, I can help you out some on the car ( I used to work for Backdraft); That is Guardsman Blue with wimbledon white stripes, the car is not a kit, it is built in a Factory in Durbin, SA and shipped to Fla. and finished out there. They are on a 92 inch wheelbase and also two inches wider than the original. It is a 2x4 box ladder style frame fitted with BMW E36 suspension, the front is changed a bit with the coil over strut which make changing the ride height easier. It comes stock with BMW single pistion brakes the wilwoods are an upgrade option. They are really great driving cars as I have put a lot of miles on them. You have several engine options. They are always working on improving the car to keep up with the latest trends in market place. I was the guy that did the 0-60 run in the black car with Orange stripes at El Toro.

    "kit car" is a bit of a misnomer... Factory Five is a "kit car"... Backdraft (Superformance as well) is sold as a fully-assembled rolling chassis... the only "kit" part of the Backdraft is your choice (and installation) of engine and transmission. But whatever... they're all fun. I enjoyed my Backdraft for 8 years. A buddy of mine has a Factory Five with a 552 in it (460 stroker)... he did an amazing build on it... it's a beast! ...definitely traction-limited... as most of them are!

    These modern Cobra replicas are fantastic!! I had the opportunity a couple years ago to drive a Kirkham 289 slabside that was unbelievable, and so close to the real thing, if not better.....and nothing sounds like a Cobra 289 or 427. Sitting at a set of lights with that magic rumble, and tapping the loud pedal just sends a sharp twitch through the car. They don't build excitement like that much anymore. Long live the "knock-off" Cobras!

    I've still got a copy of Car & Driver I bought in the 60's. It had a full test of the original car. They rated it as the easiest car of all time to rotate around the gear lever and said that it would wheel spin to beyond 100 mph on a dry road. Madness. Oh, and it was $7K new back then....

    Classic Cobra colors IMO. First Cobra I ever saw in person was in 1983, our school guidance counselor was taking us up PCH near Malibu on our way to UC Santa Barbara. We had to stop for gas at a little filling station and lo and behold there was a real Shelby Cobra 427(not many replicas in those days) up on the rack getting it's left side header collector welded up. Out of curiosity I approach the Cobra and the mechanic goes, "Yeah, it's real" :-) In those days the cars(Cobra 427s) were barely breaking $100,000, but then again, a $100,000 in 1983 is about $600,000-$700,000 today. Of course the Cobra I saw that day was Guardsman Blue(without the stripes) and had it's snap on top with side curtains installed(no roll-hoop). Luckily we stayed long enough to see the mechanic finish welding the collector and watched the owner drive off.....man, the sound of an actual FE big block 427 with side exhaust accelerate quickly away from a standstill is something that only seeing in person can describe the sensation. 35 years later, anything with a Cobra in it grabs my attention!

    Great review. Love the kit car, but I agree on all your remarks. The bucket seats are sketchy (safety first for me) and the steering wheel is hideous. But I must say that other than that the car looks great. Wheels look really nice. And they are on a size that really favors the car.

    A real AC Cobra is basically a kit car itself. The kits are just as good, if not better than the originals. The originals are just rare and famous so they're worth a lot of money.

    Mate I love your channel! Just found it. I'm thinking of buying myself one these emotionally intoxicating machines. Can you tell me one thing......Cobra replicas can vary significantly between manufacturers.........does the steering wheel come out straight towards you or is it angled off to one side?

    • @AutotopiaLA
      @AutotopiaLA  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! The wheel on this one is pretty well centered but pedals are off right. I thought it was weird at first but hit the accelerator a few times and you forget about the small details and get sucked into the sound and the torque. Backdraft makes a great car. So does Factory 5 and Kirkham.

    Great video. I own one with the Roush. Amazing vehicle. As stated below, this is a factory built car not a kit. The interesting thing about these cars is that except for the collectibility factor, these cars are in every way better than the originals. They have BMW suspensions, Tremec 5 speeds, Rack & Pinion steering and racing style brakes. This is by far the most powerful car I have ever driven and that includes my 66 427 Vette. It's a blast to drive and a little intimidating. The sound is second to none. Forget about a radio, you won't be able to hear it. It's definitely a head turner. There reasonably priced. The one in this video will set you back around 75k.

    • @AutotopiaLA
      @AutotopiaLA  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree and my apologies for the kit car reference. What a fun car to drive. The sound. The feel. The looks it gets. Just awesome!! And it pulls hard and I never got on it that hard.

    • @julianneale6128
      @julianneale6128 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It only makes sense to use modern components in building a kit car of today. It's cheaper and easier than recreating the older techniques. Fiberglass bodywork too is much quicker and easier and massively cheaper to create than an original AC hand crafted, beaten and rolled aluminium body... A Salisbury differential are expensive, hard to get these days and are all saved for Jag E-Types... The only 2 things you will find in the States today is the engines and gearboxes, but even then, they are now very hard to get. Everything else on these original cars are from England and are equally hard to get. I mean the list goes on...

    Shawn, I been re-watching this Cobra video. You mentioned that the seats were somewhat short at the back. I was just wondering if you could make custom seats that were a
    little taller, but were curved and angled a little bit higher on their insides to fit just under that lip below the white stripes? You may then even be able to run the seat belts
    through slots in each seat. The only problem is, would that make sitting a little more uncomfortable because of the raised inside angles of each seat? Later!
