- A Review of the all new Bachmann Narrow Gauge - 009 Scale - 391-025 - Baldwin Class 10-12-D 4-6-0T, in Weathered WDLR Black Livery.
Built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, the Baldwin Class 10-12-D was the principal military locomotive for the British War Department Light Railway during the First World War. 495 where constructed between 1916 and 1917, for us on the WDLR Network on the Western Front, with some also reaching other theatres of war, outside Europe.
After WW1, many of the locomotives were sold off to Private Owners and Narrow Gauge railways around the world. Railways in the UK which receive Baldwins, included the Walsh Highland Railway and Glyn Valley Tramway. The Ashover Light Railway built up a fleet of 6 locomotives, which provided most of the motive power on it’s network.
Four locomotives have been preserved in the UK, including WDLR 778, which is preserved on the Leighton Buzzard Light Railway, Bedfordshire.
Bachmann have done a superb job in capturing the overall look of these iconic Narrow Gauge Locomotives. The model throughout features a high level of detail, including extensively detailed cab interior, directional headlamps, as well characteristic daylight under the boiler, as well as wealth of separately fitted parts, such as pipe work and turned brass whistle.
Straight from the box, performance is smooth and quite, thanks to their powerful Coreless Motors.
The Bachmann Baldwin Class 10-12-D certainly are an extremely welcome addition to the ever growing 009 Scale ready to run market, and one, I personally feel, sets a whole new standard for RTR in general.

A great layout I wish I had that imagination skill. Tell me, how tight a radius will it go round and I am assuming that the hose on the rear is for collecting water when there is not a water tank near by? Another question, does anyone know when the other Bachmann engines are going to be available? Thanks Mel
Thanks ever so much Melford! Glad you like the layout. As for the minim radius it's 9 inch (Peco 009 set track), which is what I've used on my layout. Indeed, the hose could be used to pick-up water from streams and even craters. Think the due date for the next few versions is in the next month or so, fingers crossed :) Glad you enjoyed!
Great review of the Baldwin Class 10-12-D model mate ; ) I been to the Leighton Buzzard Railway a few times and see No.778 in action.

4:30 does anyone know where i can get internal hex socket that'll fit the hex screw that holds the coupling rod as mine fell off & i'm struggling to tighten it back on

So! When it comes to NG I am lost correct if I'm wrong but 009 is locos that are 4mm running on N gauge track & 076 is 7mm running on 4mm gauge track! Am I right or wrong

Where did you purchase this locomotive. I’ve been searching for one and I haven’t had all too much luck

There is a similar loco in Columbus GA inside of Fort Benning. It is a Davenport 2-6-2 that looks almost exactly the same except wheel arrangement and the fact it is brown, and has a number plate on the smoke box door. It’s the No. 5, the last of Fort Benning’s “toy train” network.

Very well done review and a very nice engine. Can't wait to get my Peggy! at some point could we have a comparison with the Minitrains Baldwins. It would be interesting to see the difference, even if they are different locos.

I know little about 009 scale. What is the track you have used here to complete the narrow gauge look?
What is the actual gauge of track 009 scale sets out to replicate. Always preferred the narrow gauge look.
I've used Peco 009 set track for my layout, really is good stuff, much like their 00 and N gauge set track range. As for the width of the track its the same as N Gauge, but with the sleeper and rails scales to narrow gauge :)
If only I had some space for a bit of narrow gauge, that looks awesome!

I'm probably a little late to ask, but I'm thinking of getting one of these and I want to ask what the smallest radius curve they can manage is, as my layout uses radius 1 curves in some areas. If anyone can help, I'd be very grateful. Thanks
Hmmm, is that the Peco set track? If so then yes. Peco set track is 9inch, which is what I have used on Amiens :)

Anybody else have problems with the coupling to wagons?
Not at the moment. Mine seems to have not trouble coupling and un-coupling. Even on my 9 inch curves.
