My grandfather won the mac 1917, we still have the Cup and flag. He had 2 boats, the intruder and the shamrock. He was a member of the Jackson Park Yacht Club. He used to sail it to the Newport Jazz Festival every year. He loved sailing with his brothers.

Big difference between a fresh water boat and a salty. I live in Toronto.
Boats here spend 7 months on the hard and no salt. So a 30 year old Ontario boat vs Florida boat? My father-in-law bought an Ericson in 1979 from Gordon Lightfoot. Lightfoot ordered it semi custom, after his $$ made from his hit record Sundown. He named the boat Sundown, and we kept the name. His sister handled the sale, because he wanted to ensure that the new owners would maintain and appreciate the boat. We left every C&C in our wake. Spent many summers on it.
    Memories of Georgian Bay.

Thank you for featuring this Catalina at the end of your video. I know the broker, Captain Mike O’Conner of Mariner’s Yacht and Ship Brokerage which the boat is listed under in Dana Point Harbor, California.
My wife and I purchased a 1995 Catalina 320 through him three and a half years ago. We paid a little over $40k for her, named her Monarch, and since then have added another thirty thousand in repairs and upgrades. We love our sweet 320 and spend time on her almost every weekend.
It would be awesome if you would do a video on the Catalina 320. It is such a unique and special boat. Aft Cabin. Spacious main salon. Nice VBerth. Galley, enclosed head…and she is fast. She is our starter boat, and is amazing for entertaining, daysails, and weekend trips to Catalina Island itself, just forty miles off the coast from our Dana Point, where we have her slipped up!

In the 60’s decks were plywood cored, so that’s a concern with any boat from the 60’s and also with any teak decked boat. The teak requires a lot of fasteners, creating an opportunity for leaks.

I think you should emphasize that you’ve actually got to get on these boats to appreciate them. I looked online for a year before i went to actually see one. I loved almost every boat i saw, but condition was always an issue. Then i got on a Nauticat 44 and immediately fell in love with it. It was twice the price as most of the stuff i was looking at, but it also felt like twice the boat. I thought i was headed for a Beneteau First or 45 until i saw it. Big, slow and ugly, but it’s the boat for me and for where i hope to sail it. I feel like i’m going to be a snail who carries his house on his back.

OMG. I want a pilot house motor sailer badly. An affordable one just slipped away from me. How do you like yours? Is it worth getting one from the 70s for budget vs a newer boat of the same price due to the extra room in the pilot house? Is it better to travel abroad to get one? I greatly appreciate your time if you have time to respond. If not I understand. Happy sailing. 😀

@@r.williamcomm7693 Thanks for commenting on my post. Any chance to talk about boats… There’s a few big topics.
Overseas purchase: I didn’t even consider buying one overseas as I think I would have needed 4-6 months or so to bring it back. I can’t walk away from my job for that long. I wouldn’t just jump on the thing and set sail, I’d want to spend at least a month getting to know it, and likely need a couple more months to address whatever deficiencies I found. And you’ve got to deal with the local customs and government regulations… Ideally one month to cross the ocean, but perhaps you don’t start on the French coast and end on the US’s east coast… but the Euro is down right now, so this is a good chance to save at least 20% over what you would have spent a year ago.
Pilot houses: I can only speak to the Nauticat 44 pilot house. I traded off a lot of performance over say a Beneteau First, but I got a much more comfortable boat, with a huge aft cabin and of course the pilot house. The pilot house breaks the “in a cave” feel that you have from almost all sailboats. Not only can you see 360 degrees, but the sliding side doors of the Nauticats allows a wonderful breeze to pass through the cabin. It’s the next best thing to being outside, but you’re inside. Two air conditioners, heaters and a 8 kW generator means we’ll be as comfortable as we want to be for all the diesel we want pay for. We’ve only had it a few months, but when we take it out we see all of the 37’-40’ boats getting lifted and slammed back down in 3-4’ waves, whereas with our full keel and 35000 pounds, we’re barely feeling any of them. This boat is about comfort, but we gave up quite a bit of performance that I'm reminded of as those racer/cruiser’s pass us by… but we're older and so the comfort was a huge issue.
Age: Ours is a 1985, so it’s 37 years old. I’d say it’s been well kept, but it wasn’t babied. I’m finding lots of things that need to be addressed or fixed. This takes time, effort and money, but one big plus about this is that you learn about the boat. I’d much rather learn about all of the boat’s systems at the marina than 500 miles off shore. I know Tim like to quote “Go small, go simple, go now.” I think that, unless you can’t get a decent paying job, you’re going to almost always be better off going on a tight budget, saving your money and spending more on a boat than fixing up one yourself. Sinking your body into a hull, at a painful angle, on a feaking hot day is miserable. Ideally find someone who’s already sunk a bunch of money into the boat (over the original purchase price) and is going to get 50 cents back on the dollar. However, restoring a boat can be a “spiritual” journey that for some is worth taking. Bottom line about age is that good fiberglass hulls can essentially last forever, and absolute worse case is that you strip it down to the fiberglass and put another layer of fiberglass on it. (Balsa and foam cored boats need to be carefully inspected. All Nauticat boats made after some date in the 70’s were made with solid glass hulls and solid glass decks.) Also, the size of the boat isn’t as big of a concern as you may think. Look at the channels “Sailing Wave Rover” and “Sven Yrvind” to see some great alternative small boats, but they’re one man boats…

So many boats to look at in this price range, you've barely scratched the surface. Our friends just sold their 1984 Sabre 38 for $45K this past spring. Very pretty, very solid, very good sailing boat. You would be able to find some Tartan 37's from the 80's as well. And while you talk about C & C's quite a bit, I don't think you've ever profiled the best one I think they ever made, the C & C 41 (not the 40) from the mid-80's. Those are showing up in the low $50K range now. The problem with these 35 year old boats is it's really hard to find a clean one. They have usually had 2-3 owners and each successive one treats the boat with a little less care. I would be pretty hesitant about buying a 35 year old boat that spend its life in salt water. It would have to be a fresh water boat at that age.

The Cal 2-46 Galley up is THE best long range live aboard cruiser or circumnavigator there is when you plug in cost or bang for the buck. I owned and cruised mine for 8 year. How many boats carry 270 gallons of diesel!! Have nearly 3:1 reduction gear swinging a 26” 3 blade of the feathering prop of your choice. With the fixed 3 blade I could still sail 200 mile days! And she could motor into a near gale, straight into it. How many boats have 17 feet of galley space! A diesel generator, a 20 gph water maker. All of the tankage down low. NO tanks or batteries in any of your locker or under your births. 2 hanging lockers big enough to get into and close the door. Oh did I mention a full standing headroom engine ROOM. ALL the equipment of the boat is in the engine room. The one with a workbench a vice, a drill press. You get the picture. Motors super well sail very well. The only some what of a weak point is that with 5 foot draft that enables her to get into shallow areas, does have some leeway when beating hard. And that has not stopped nor effected the MANY circumnavigations that they have done. Yeah, you guessed it, I loved this boat. By far the best of 5 serious cruising boats that I have full time cruised. An OK one might be found for 50K or so. A really really nice one around a hundredish K. Also very well behaved at sea.

First video of yours I've watched. Enjoyed. For my next boat (1st was Ericson 32) will be center cockpit, 40+ft, davits, engine "room", room for potential water maker etc. CSY 44 is another good candidate but they can go for a pretty penny. The big thing is though I think I want steel. Definitely pros and cons but the idea of steel, for me, is very desirable. Interesting to know your thoughts on that.
Edit. Just looking at your video list and see you have a video on steel boats. Will watch now.

I think it’s impossible to check everything on a boat before you buy it. A surveyer will keep you from making a huge mistake, but depending in the boat, you will be finding issues with it for as long as you own it. Whats your price point and expected use?
