I'm 64. I'm going to need a walk thru transom, electric winches,furling sails, water maker if my body is going to let me cruise. What else do you suggest for us older folk.

To answer your question 80-120k, I'm partial to the corbin 39. Probably spend a bit more to get one that is finished nicely. Just love that boat.

Ahoy! I just noticed Lady K hails from Chatham. I grew up there (Tecumseh grad), but sailed our Northern 29 (also an S&S design) on Lake Ontario.
I was leaning heavily in favor Of a tartan, but noooo, you have me back in the Catalina camp. Those mark 11’s are beautiful heavy cruisers. Thanks again for your information!

Great info, I just finished buying A Gozzard 36 (89), located in St Thomas. Like your list this one fit mine: Cutter rigged, new Beta engine, walk through "drop down transom" , solar, wind gen, fresh batteries, water maker, new touch screen chart plotter, outstanding condition, #18k, and yes the previous owner had sailright so everything has covers, fairly new 9' dingy with davits and new 9.5hp outboard full keel with the bight. 52 gal water, 40 gal fuel. Walk in shower... all in all better than island hopper and ok for offshore to state.
You scored a great boat. There is one right across from me on Vashon Island, Washington - every time I walk past it, I'm impressed.

After 7 boats from the mid 30 range too a 50 IOR I ended up with a Whitby 42, not quite ready for the trawler scene just yet. Love the room both on deck and below, and in a breeze she tracks well. In no wind I can steam or just float around and have a comfy nap.

I am liking the Jeaneau Sun Odessey 45 (or perhaps closer to 40 or 42) - and I am in the Island hopper category, sailing on the east coast like the Chesapeake. Its seems a small step up from Beneteau in quality and style (including that fantastic beam 14.7'). The Beneteaus are so common, while highly functional - it does gets somewhat boring.

i am quite certain that the Duncan Marine Garden 46 is a Bill Garden design. A west coast designer world renknowned for these types of boats. Last I heard he was living on an island near Sidney BC but died a few years back. Stunning boat and design. He was a character as well :)

I have a Hughes 35 (sound familiar?), no one is coming by for sundowners on my boat. The sugar scoop is the way to go. I'm just weekending right now but pretty sure that at 6'4" it's not going to be a great fit for longer cruising, even after modifying the V berth for more leg room.
I've been aboard the Garden. Its a beautiful boat that deserves an owner that will continue to take care of it.

I presently have a 32 Hunter visions, a bleach bottle boat with an awesome sugar scoop and walk through transom! I have enjoyed it immensely, and I agree with the easy accessibility, even on and off of the dock! I am presently dreaming of 1981 Lord Nelson 41, all number 4 and here on lake Erie. Totally opposite boats from one extreme to the other.
I really like your reviews however one of the things I haven't seen you address is replacement of standing rigging. Would be interested in your thoughts on this. In most of the yacht world ads you hardly ever see a mention of standing rigging age even on 20 plus year old boats. Shouldn't this be an important factor in pricing when looking at older boats ?
And I've noticed a large portion of the listings failed to post the engine hours this drives me nuts!

it's $1,000.00 a month to rent a slip for a 42' boat here in Hawaii and that's before utilities, vehicle parking and state tax. And years long waiting list for an available slip or live aboard permit unless you buy a boat that comes with a transferable slip. This place is nuts man.
Great run through. I personally would also throw in Irwin 43 mk 2 in to the mix, such a well laid out boat so comfortable.
Great episode- you should keep track of the boats you use as examples that get bought by your followers if you ever hear of any like that. It would be cool to revisit some and see how a first year sailing on them goes. I’ve only had two but I know things often go differently than expected after boat purchases, stuff like delayed starts and different than anticipated experiences. Goes both ways but I’m sure there will be some stunning surprising sea stories of really hitting the jackpot of sailing experiences that turn up. That’s what I’d love to watch

You’ll love the fwd head with a great shower/wet locker. You’ll bang your own head on the ceiling as you grab stuff from the garage. 😱 but you’ll love the 20kWh of LFP you keep in there powering 2 inverter chargers so you can sleep with aircon all night and not have to deal with a genset.
Is it perfect? Nope. But every trade off is justified. No two C42s are the same. Each boat has been upgraded/modified over the years. It’s a great platform for anyone to make his/her own “dream boat.”

Not a fan of the Bene or Jeanneau. The older ones seem to be more….classy than the last decade or so.

Superb comparison break down of the said 5 designs. Island hopper light displacement designs are good for as you said staying closer to land and have superb when steering into a marine to dock in a slip. Not that they can not cross oceans, but even in a serve blow rough wind and wave conditions along the coast their hull design will be hard to live with and possibly be dangerous pitch, hoping and slamming hard to knock your filling out and chip your teeth. My wife and i learn to sail on island hopper design Jenneau 40 something footer and it took two incidents to turn me off. One was when i went below to see how it was to be down below during a jibe. The super fast jibing put such strain on me to grip while bracing i was torn from by grip and slung across the saloon crashed through the head thin wooden door busting the door and landed in the head seat on my side. badly busied and shocked that my grip and braces was not sufficient. The second event was when while down below in more in choppy waves the hull not designed for said waves slammed so hard it was like similar to being in a drum and someone hitting it. Very uncomfortable. This experience has lead me to do much more research and after reading 25 books, 1,000 of videos, hundreds of podcasts and other interviews about plus and minus of various hull designs over the last two years I have a higher respect for heavier displacement Ocean Voyaging boat. I always seem to be lead to Tayana 42 - 48' as the best fit for my desires of traveling.

The sugar scoops... what do you think of boats fitted with a small deck on the back? I've seen a few. An example for sale now (10/2/24) is the "Shorn Lamb" island packet. Would that suffice instead of a sugar scoop?

I have a Catalina 36mk2. Love it for San Francisco Bay and sailing up or down the coast. She has an open transom and two cabins. I would sail her to the Caribbean but would not circumnavigate it. She needs a bigger fuel tank with only 18 gallons. Carry fuel jugs even coastal cruising. Catalina 42 are great sailboats but costs keep going up for bigger boats, like boat slips etc.
Ok looks like it's already under agreement but a Swan 391 in LA (state) is my kind of blue water passage maker. Hylas 44, Grand Soleil, Hallberg Rassey, I could go on. Most are spade rudder or partial skeg. Those brands have infinitely more passage making miles than Island Packet. Quite frankly a Tayanna is generally a better full keel boat.
I’ve been thinking of an Amel Sentorin but I’m wondering if the center cockpit while fantastic at sea weather you loose something from the open rear cockpit for sitting in the sun ?
I’d be interested in what others think on that .
And the galley on the Amel is small.

The Duncan Looks like a good boat for me if I had the money but you're selling me on that open transit style boat.

I have a Beneteau 38 and would have no problem crossing an ocean with it. I have done Baja and back many times. Only 40 gals of fuel so yes I would have some jerry cans. I do know people who have done the milk run and used much less than 40 Gals. 120 Gals of water but a small water maker can extend that indefinitely. I agree with you on the Cat 42.Catalina does a much better job than Beneteau/Jenneau on the cabinetry and utilization of storage space and not to argue with the Blue Water cruisers opinion There are sooo many Beneteaus and Catalinas that have crossed many oceans. On the last note. If you could re-engine that 80K boat for 10 grand. I'd higher you as a consultant
For $80 to $100 grand I would buy a Hake Seaward RK32 (Lifting Keel - tabernacle mast) to sail to loop and then return to my N. Georgia lake for sailing into my 80s. Or, if I could afford it, (much newer and much more money) a Beneteau Oceanis 30.1 or 34.1 with a lifting keel. Currently I sail a 1998 Catalina 28mii on my small lake.

The Sun Odyssey 45.2 is a great boat. Quite a bit bigger than a C42, especially the cockpit.
I'm not sure what is up with this particular one in the video though. It's the only one I have ever seen with the bigger windows missing! This one has two extra small rounded windows instead.
You're right, it has a different configuration of coachroof windows. The only thing I can think of is that there was a version of this boat built specifically for the Moorings charter company. I wonder if Jeanneau modified the design for that reason? Also, Tim said it has a beam of 16 feet, but it's actually 14'-8". Still a beamy boat.

Hello kids... @73 now, fit, healthy still & can handle the hard stuff! I'm a new comer to all this & learning as I go here & there. Moving to Florida (surprise!) this year & want a live comfortably aboard catamaran sailboat I can realistically afford including all the sailing / nav / marine schools & mom & pop no frills marina while all that. I'm kinda ol'school too & maybe would prefer a vintage under 40' feet Catalac, Sea Craft, etc. Give a shout if known about (boat yard) slight fixer upper, leans, in debt..., etc. On the hard or not.

what are your thoughts on buying a boat from the caribbean... you mentioned a Jeanneau in Antigua, but it's challenging to view it or inspect it from the states.

Hi Tim, another notable mention is that I talked to my friend that is a manager at my local marina and he told me that here in Florida the marina associations are moving to be less accommodating to boats over 30 years old so if I'm going to keep my vote for more than 4 or 5 years I'm looking at a 2000 or newer boat. I thought that might be something your viewers need to take in consideration and also for insurance purposes. Just saying. That Catalina 42 Mark II two of them were on the market in South Florida probably for 3 or 4 weeks and both have contracts on them so they are a popular boat. I just can't figure out that swim ladder access to the boat with the dinghy on the davits that ladder doesn't look like it was swing down into the water to let you out. It seems like you need to leave the ladder in the water while you're on the hook in order to get in and out of the boat. I would think an offset letter would be better Suited to get on and off the boat.
Can you do a dive into Prout cats? There history says they were race winning boats. No nonsense with good layouts. I think they went into the 90's,

Why do I even watch these... the 5k for an old Albin or Macwester is gonna take me two years to save up lol.
Why not discuss the keel attachment before anything else? The problem is so glaring that nearly everyone starts out by pretending it isn’t there. If there are keel bolts, and they aren’t tip-top, nothing else matters. Especially in this price range. Always find out why it’s for sale.

At $125,000 the Jeanneau is overpriced for St. John. In Florida or NC it's worth a look. In the Caribbean no way. Too much paperwork, too much traveling to see it, and too much to sail it back to the US.

What did we buy for €80K? A less than 2 year old Jeaneau 349. She still smelled new inside. The seller cried as he signed her over to us, I cried because she is perfect for the sailing we do. The only thing we added was a bow thruster. Everything else we could want or need was included. 2 cabin owners version. Love the separate shower and garage. Inside is roomier than 38/40 ft boats we looked at. Fast,easy to sail
Single handed and looks beautiful on the water. Don’t forget the swim platform and B&G electronics😉. We have no plans to circumnavigate. Panama canal, Caribbean, south pacific, Alaska, Scandinavia, Mediterranean, Adriatic, Mexican riviera South America and then some were all sailed professionally on a bigger boat. Now we are happy to sail our Jeaneau 349 in the coastal North Sea and her sea arms. We enjoy the sunsets, the marine life, yes, we have harbour whales, seals and fauna and great diving. We sail all year round with our 349. Paradise is where you make it. Not to mention marina costs , upkeep etc are less in a newer, “smaller” boat.
Love your videos but something hit a nerve with me. Why refer to modern boat interiors as “IKEA-like”? Newer boat design has progressed to a modern, open, bright interior. I like to refer to interior design in boats as classic or modern.
What they are made of defines it more. Sharp corners were considered dangerous as well.
The Duncan is actually a pilot house or interior helm not a deck saloon. A deck saloon you don't step down into the saloon. See Moody54DS

RS Marine in Long Beach, CA did all of the work, turn key from removal of old, painting the bilges and did a fantastic job. Here is the exact quote although maybe not specific to your needs it was my reality and will give you an idea. And by the way couldn't be happier to get that old leaky noisy perkins out of this. This new motor is amazing and just purrrrrs

I'm getting a wee bit tired of the 'blue-water-full-keel-heavy-weight' vs. 'Island-hopping-production-boat'. Here in Europe the boats are getting lighter. Think Pogo etc... Even new Hallberg-Rassys are not what they used to be. The thing is that time has moved on. Materials are better, resins are better and desing tools are WAY better now. It seems to me that it's just the land of inches and feet who still thinks you need a slow boat with a full keel that can't really go upwind to cross oceans. You don't. People have been going around the planet on water with 'production boats' for ages.

Orcas aside, those light, high-tech resins and design tools must be really great at handling stray chucks of ice at night. Full keels are definitely for dummies.
@@danlindy9670 Icebergs... :) I think it's funny how the full-keel reasoning has shifted from 'Those light boats cant handle a storm' to orcas and icebergs. Y'all forgot sea containers floating just below the surface... How many of us in reality is sailing in conditions where icebergs are a thing? We get ice almost every winter up here in Finland. Yet I can't really think of a sailboat that has sunk because of hitting ice during the cold months. I can remember some rather big full steel boats sinking from hitting an iceberg. Titanic comes to mind. But then, it didn't really have a full keel, right? :)
It’s sad that politicians, like DeSantis, Cruze, McCarthy and many others on both sides, simply say what is required of them. Very sad that lobbyist and money dictate policy!
