    Hi Tim,
I just finalized the deal with my 2000 Catalina 380 today. I think it has great lines. Before I bought this boat, I looked at the Catalina 42 on Tim's advice. It does have more room but, the Pulman berth didn't work well for my wife and I. She needs to get up a few times during the night and I need to get up to check the boat. I would have to crawl over her to get up. She didn't like that idea. The island bed in the aft cabin worked well for us. It's also in the back of the boat where there is less movement than the front and quieter with less wave slapping on the hull. There is also the greater expenses with a bigger boat. The 380 is not for everyone but, it does make a lot of people happy. I have looked at all of the 380's that were for sale. Many of them are over priced. The good ones usually don't make it to Yacht World. Mine is self-sufficient. The previous owner used it to cruse the Bahamas for 6 months and took good care of it. It is a little worn but, it is in really good condition mechanically and it has a Yanmar engine. For some reason Catalina didn't start installing them until the middle of 2000. The 42's had them all the way back in '89. Tim said to me comfort is really important and having a good sleeping arrangement fits right in there. She may not be the prettiest girl at the dance but, she's going home with me and that's what counts.

Truth: "The good ones usually don't make it to Yacht World" - I feel lucky to be dealing with a honest owner, no broker fees and a mint condition C380, with upgrades for a reasonable price.

I get the "modern wow" factor for boats But.....as a long time sailor, I admire the clean and functional look of the Catalina. Function has it's own grace and charm. Kind of like a woman in a black dress and pearls.... understated classic.

I've not owned a Cat 380 but I had an "appliance 387" before I bought a new 425. The cost of "new" is such that the boat better deliver big time or you'll be sorely disappointed. Catalina's esteemed naval architect, Gerry Douglas owned a revered Catalina 42 for 20 years before designing the "five series" 425. Twenty years of "how c it better" really raised the bar. The numbers are exceptional…… a 39' waterline and a sail/displacement ratio of over 21 delivers! The self tacking jib has extended this 80 year old's sailing life. Nothing but grins!

Had we known this much when we bought our 380 we may have not negotiated so hard to get it. Our first Sailboat ( I grew up sailing). Love it. It has been well cared for, great history and maintenance records. Enjoying every minute of it.

I have a 2005 387, the same basic boat. It is very stable in 30+ winds and 5-6 foot seas, with a reef or two. Just came back from 2 weeks with another couple cruising to Nantucket and back to Long Island Sound, plenty of privacy and room. I added a Leisure Furl boom a few years ago, this boat is now even easier to handle. It is pretty plain Jane but is sure performs well on all fronts.

I have two friends who each own 380's. I've been aboard and will testify that they are a well-behaved boat. In 2022 we raced one of them to Key West from Tampa Bay. The conditions were robust, 25-30 from astern for the first 20 hours. The 380 tracked very well (although not as well as our Bristol 43 would have). Still, two hours on the helm was enough time to wear you down. We did see a top speed of 11.6 knots. It is a very impressive boat and we would definitely consider one if we ever sold ours. BTW, both paid less than 80k US, the last one being purchased summer of 2022.

We've had our 99 380 for 9 years , and we love her more every year , the more we learn about other boats the more we know we made the rite choice and it is smaller than we set out looking for she has fulfilled our needs above and beyond expectations..
We moved from a Macgregor 26X to our 380 , i am 72 and still find here easy to manage..
She is moored in the well known town of Gibsons , home , Of the Beach Combers ..
Thank for your great review ..

Now I do more day sailing and club racing on my C&C 99 we have not spent a overnight on the boat since buying it 2 and 1/2 years ago. our life at the moment does not let us. but at some point we will. With the economic meltup the past deades the bar is set very high for yachts.
The price to impress in the anchorage seems around mean price average 150 k- 500k. Lots of mid 30's people cruising on luxury on You Tube. I always love seeing someone pull up to drop anchor in a Cal 34. Refreshing. Make that money or get that loan kids the girls will love it as will you meandering around your huge cabin in comfort no doubt.

  • @gbr562

Having sailed/raced for the best part of 50 years and half that working as a boatbuilder I've got some boxes that need a tick before I spend 150K on my next boat but I've still not found a boat that ticks all the boxes. There are many that go a fair way but never quite make it.
The 380 is a case in point, almost but not quite.
A hull speed of about 7.5knt but at 7 3/4 tons you'll need over 12knts of wind to get near it.
A spade rudder without a skeg goes against its offshore qualities.
Plus trying to get one in Europe I'm guessing will be even harder.
Foam core could be an issue as others with similar build suffer from delamination as water seeps in between the core and the laminate and then goes hydraulic increasing the delamination. Not an easy fix. Lots of Sadlers over here suffer from that and the resulting osmosis.

The fact that they sell quickly makes me feel a little safer. I've never owned a boat. What if I buy one and discover that this really isn't as much fun as it looks to be on TH-cam? Or if I find that my older body isn't quite up to sailing in a few years? Knowing that there's a ready market for this boat if I needed to see it is comforting.

When someone buys a boat, what paperwork is needed ? How do you decide where to register the boat? (tax savings ect).
In my situation, I live in the UK and I'm looking to buy a 32 -38 foot sailing boat, probably in the USA or Caribbean some place.
And use it for 6 months a year in the Caribbean, then I'd also need to store it some place till the next year. Any pointer would be well received.

What I want to know, is all about the Catalina 28 mkii. In my eyes it seems like an incredibly influential boat, or maybe I haven't looked at the timeline correctly, but it has hot and cold running water, window in the hull which of course was new to the mkii vs the 28 or even the 27 mkii. cockpit shower, head aft layout, walk through transom, etc etc. we have a 1983 c&c mkii, and looking at the 28 mkii Catalina, it has so many more creature comforts its ridiculous.

Ok got my first question on your YT site. Now I know people have crossed oceans on a canoe (very small sail boats). But from a practical matter would in your opinion a Catalina/Morgan 38 cc be up to the task to safely be able to be classified as a "Blue Water" sail boat. One that could be used to circumvent the World's Oceans, cross the Atlantic/Pacific without sinking and killing everyone on board ? Yes I guess you now realize I like that boat for its Livability/affordability. If you choose to answer my query here be honest and if you are aware of a Catalina/Morgan 38 cc currently doing such let me know about that and if they have a blog/You Tube Channel as well ? Thanks.
P.S.: IMy first choice, for financial reasons and the fact that I love what I see and read about it would be a catamaran, the Privilege 37. But alas I simply cannot find one that is for sale and I have been searching for one for over 3 years now. By the way, I am 70 years young and not getting any younger, haha.

Sometimes i think I'd be better off selling my project boat on & getting something like the Catalina 38, at least I could start cruising. How ever, i do like the robustness of my boat with its full keel & its 3foot extension in the way of a sugar scoop on the back. But yes, some of the boats that you show sure does get me thinking. I have to laugh about his last point: that the boat has no "wow factor", that it looks like an appliance. I'm an extremely happy 380 owner, as a liveaboard for 5 years before I retired, and now as a cruiser in the Sea of Cortez. But I agree about the looks. Doesn't really matter to me, but it's not a sexy boat. Never thought that much about it until he mentioned. It's utilitarian. But down below, I think it is somewhat sexy (where it counts!). The interior is quite pleasing. All in all, a great boat. Sails well. Comfortable inside for a crew of 3-4 (great standing headroom). Not selling mine anytime soon!! Kevin H. s/v Oso del Mar.

I chartered a 380 in the Whitsundays before my 350 arrived and was in charter there for 11 years. I really liked the 380 and I think it must have been a mark II as the aft ladder was fold up which I like much better than the fence type. But I like the 350 layout more which has the head forward and a bigger galley with two fridge cabinets and more bench space.

I know most people will disagree with this opinion, but after all the stories of busted bolt on keels and spade rudders, if I ever manage to get a boat, it’ll definitely be full keel or long keel with skeg hung rudder

@LadyKsailing. I’ve listened to all the good arguments for fin keels and spade rudders, but just being able to avoid the possibility of the disaster those can bring, is enough to push me to full keels or long keels ( shallow draft ) and skag hung rudders

There is good reason why Catalina boats cost more in the after market.

I too think Catalina looks plain and it is expensive, especially if you want to buy it in Canada.

You could use a Bedazzler and make it fancy, quite inexpensively!

Pretty good review until "the looks". I think they're beautiful with conventional angles and moderate beam. Bring up Jeanneau for looks...I really think Jeanneau deck salons are atrocious.
    😂
Aesthetics really don't belong on reviews. Clearly it depends on the eye of the beholder.
    ..
Instead talking lines, bal:disp, comfort ratios, these would have added more to the review.

The hooligan featured towards the end of the video was our boat for 15 years. I wish I never sold her. I have a couple videos on YT docking

Style is in the eye of the beholder, some like crisp sharp shapes and some like rounded curved shapes it’s not easy to please everyone but this vessel seems to please many both young and old like the saying function over form wins the race ! Or it’s not the prettiest horse in the barn that pulls the plow ! Lol
