  • Floyd Mayweather is the best skilled fighter ever. This series aims to show fans why. The third volume features Floyd at welterweight against Zab Judah.
    One correction: In the brawl scene I spelled Yoel Judah's name Joel. My apologies, no disrespect intended.

    Floyd mayweather is something else man... just like you I’ve been studying him for years... during your time studying Floyd fighting,have you seen Floyd throw a leading right h hand but then he doesn’t get out of way or use the high guard to defend a counter, he throws the leading right hand and extend the left hand like he’s going to push the fighter against the ropes... 😂 I mean the man created his own boxing.

    Good work bro. Seems to me like you wanted to use this fight to highlight Mayweather's pressure game and inside game. He's next level with every aspect of his game. An important element of this fight is why Mayweather walked Judah down. Seems to me the Mayweather camp had an inside fight in mind as part of the game plan going into the fight because Mayweather is a far superior inside fighter. Another reason they wanted an inside fight is the only chance Judah had was to keep the fight on the outside and counter Mayweather on the way in. Judah had some early success with this strategy. But once Mayweather closed the distance, Judah no longer had the space to time Mayweather with counters and it was all downhill from there

    I didn't plan on this but it's kind of funny that earlier today I was watching a Crawford video from your channel and I was commenting on how hard it is to block your opponent's jab or catch your opponent's job and at the same time throw your own jab. Crawford was doing that against Spence and Mayweather's doing that to Judah in this video. Like I said in the other video if you've never boxed then you have no idea how hard that is to do .

    Brilliant and educational, this series, as all your content always is. It was an indicator of just how good FM jnr truly was in the way he schooled and controlled the frighteningly talented Judah, and your commentary gives extra depth to a video tutorial that should be a must watch for young people starting off in our sport. I know it's a bit behind us in the past, but I would love to see you make a similar video breakdown on Ray Leonard, pre retina detachment?
    He was the standard we aspired to in this weight zone back when I was active, and Ray seemed to have a kinesthetic sense to his skill, like Floyd.
    Be great see and hear your assessment.

  • @bobbyCruiser
    @bobbyCruiser ปีที่แล้ว

    Floyd’s position where he has a regular guard/kinda low high guard and crouches down a little is very effective. It’s like he can jab with power like Ward would do on oncoming opps, hit the body with both, throw a naked right and if it misses he applies a frame with that right. After the right he would also go to his right after (towards Judah’s power) and throw a left hook but clear Judah’s defenses to land. He didn’t even have to fight the outside foot battle because of the high level controls, changing guards, and especially that position.
    He did take a hard shot in the 4th that highlights the vulnerability of shielding that back hand especially in the position he was in. But even the greats can have mistakes.
    I loved watching this fight over again.
    I’m definitely going to incorporate that position with the emphasis of firing with no telegraphing like Floyd lol wel see!

    • @bobbyCruiser
      @bobbyCruiser ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I watched the rest of the fight today and round 9 and 10 were masterclasses. Zab takes some angles after the whole debacle lol and Floyd’s foot positioning like you highlight - he’s able to shut that down pretty quickly. But the sheer amount of skills used in 9 is crazy

  • @AlanSLH97
    @AlanSLH97 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I didn’t get the reason why he switched to a high guard. Also, how does the high-guard allow a boxer to guard from getting punched in the liver? Thanks!

    • @BoxingGems
      @BoxingGems  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Good question! Floyd originally tried to box Judah from the outside where he uses a conventional or low guard (against a southpaw) but was getting countered. Zabs hand speed was amongst the top in the sport at that point. Floyd adjusted by using the high guard to walk in/jab in/or as you saw, lead 2 into the inside where he could go to work. If he was in any other guard, Zab could have easily caught him coming in like he was in the earlier rounds. Floyd walked him down in the high guard.
      You protect the liver in the high guard by leaning to the side that is being attacked or tucking the elbow in for uppercuts.

    Yo Gems. I'm scrolling through your back catalog again. I'm not sure I 100% agree that Floyd Mayweather Jr is the best skilled ever. It's hard to be better than Sugar Ray Robinson. I think I would add a qualifier in that the style would also need to be people pleasing.
    Floyd certainly was that and more for a while until he became "Money" and then the defense became a lot more prominent. There's no doubt that his defense was top 10 of all time but it doesn't always make for a satisfying fight. I'm not saying that you're wrong but I do think that Sugar Ray Robinson has to be considered.
