I agree with your assessment of this particular Orijen food. I won't feed this formula because of the lentils, legumes, peas etc. However there's another formula that came on the market recently maybe a year ago called Orijen Original "Amazing Grains" formula. The bag is nearly identical but the ingredients panel is not! I'm feeding 3 big dogs so I incorporate some kibble into their diet along with raw. I also still worry about balance. I'd consider the Orijen Amazing Grains superior among dry dog foods, definitely in top 3, and I've studied many labels!
I am soooo glad I found this channel! I agree with the fresh food part especially. Ever since he became an adult, my dog eats fresh food every day and he is 9 now and with 0 health problems. He is as active as a 1-year-old dog. I avoid giving him food with preservatives, but it cannot be avoided. He needs his treats 😅 But I'll sub and binge watch your vid. Listening to you, there is much I can learn and improve on.
I do love your advocacy for raw diets and fresh foods, but you've said nothing in this video about Orijen that couldn't be said about any other kibble. In fact, it could be suggested to reference that Orijen kibble ingredients list to create a homemade meal with the corresponding fresh ingredients.
Hi! What brand do you recommend for a labrador? I just started orijen regional red and I want to start supplementing fresh ingredients. Do you think this would be ok or is there a better brand?
Cam, since I found your website and videos I have been recommending it around. You halped me enormously when our new puppy refused to eat the kibble it came with. Royal Canin was binned right away and I have been cooking like a mule almost on daily basis since. Our puppy hasn't refused his meal once since and I can see us introducing the raw diet soon. Shihtzu dogs are fussy eaters generally but in our case it was a question of survival 🥴...you practically saved our puppy! I will continue spreading the word and you continue researching and reviewing. PS: we also tried Acana from Orijen, no chance. Some dogs are more intelligent than we are.
I tried raw diet in my pup (10 months old) and we had a lot of poops, like a lot! We switched the diet to Orijin and mixing it up with fresh cooked dog food with mostly meat.
I fed my dog kibble and she loved to 14 - standard poodle . My friend had her brother and fed him raw . He passed away two weeks prior to my Rosie. Is Origen lying when they say they cook at low temps? Orijen is cooked at 90 Celsius (194f). My understanding is most kibble is Cooked at well over 300F.
I suggest, go for natural homemade foods and do elimination diet. You can also check our Hypoallergenic Health Plan, here's the link: www.thedognutritionist.com/products/health-plan
Legumes are really high in FODMAPS, which some people can't break down, which leads to IBS or extreme gassiness. Not sure if anyone has done a study of FODMAPS on dogs, but maybe you want to contact University of Monash in Australia, who does all the studies on FODMAPS? I've been cooking for my dog for the last 2 years, but bought a bag of this stuff for when we go on vacation. I tried giving him a tiny bit, with the intent of gradually moving more into his diet but he was so gassy, I decided to look up reviews!
i'm doing 60% raw chicken with bones/whole eggs/white rice and 40% of Orijen Regional Red/Tundra and sure I'd do 100% raw if things weren't so expensive lol i honestly think as long as you exercise your dog, mix in 40-60 percent of raw diet (and yes I mean bones, dogs can perfectly digest raw chicken/beef bones) and high end food like Orijen/Acana/Carna4! anything more and the dog is eating better than I am so I do think you need some fresh raw diet in there but as long as you exercise the dog and mix it up a bit dog should be ok for +15 yrs
Note the protein is CRUDE protein which is not a measurement of amino acids ready for muscle regeneration. it is crude measurement which is only a measure of nitrogenous groups, which appear in HIGH levels in plants. So when the non-meat eaters says their diet has XX % protein it is not so, it is XX % nitrogenous groups, so without a doubt protein deficiency sets in. How much meat protein should a dog get every day, , ,(I ingest 1g of protein/pound of lean body mass). Thanks for a great video. I also noticed it has not salt, I don't think that's good.
U can feel how damp it is even tho it’s dry Kibble !! My American bully is almost 2 years old and this is his fav hands down he tears it up and I mix it with chicken breast and raw egg
I bought your chihuahua recipe book and I can’t thank you enough. Not only is my pup healthy but she goes absolutely crazy at meal times. It shocks me how negative peoples responses are when I tell people that I feed my puppy fresh food. It’s like they think there’s something magical in kibble that you can’t get with fresh meat and veg from the supermarket! With your videos and recipe book I’ve been able to explain and show them how much better balanced, real food is.
We have half a bag of Orijen Puppy food left since transitioning our puppy to gently cooked meals months ago. She’s been quite fussy recently with her heat, and adding some Orijen kibbles to her main meals seems to whet her appetite. Is it still OK to give the kibbles to her as treats or a meal topper? Or should we just toss the bag out and forget about salvaging that extra bit of money that was going to go down the drain anyway? Honest advice needed! 😂
If you keep your half bag for too long, it's going to go rancid. You can freeze it to help preserve it if you want. It's still better than many other kibble brands. However, Orijen has gone downhill since the brand was sold, and I no longer feed it (not worth the price anymore). They use a synthetic vitamin/mineral mix now, whereas they used to only add zinc and copper.
Eh its a slightly biased view because he wants you to feed your dog fresh food every day like a human. Orijen is clearly up there as one of the best if not the best kibbles. I don't see any issue with feeding this to your dog every day and maybe throw in a few fresh ingredients
It is initially but then it’s extruded at incredibly high temperatures and pressures just like any other extruded kibble so he’s spot on that it’s over cooked. Also the initial ‘low’ temperatures they use are still really too high for the proteins
Hi everyone my wife and i are travelling soon for 7 days and need to feed our dog a dry kibble while he is away is there anything anyone can recommend?
There is no prove, not all dogs do good on raw just like not all dogs do good on kibble. I’ve done kibbles and not one time my dogs had a bad reaction to it 😊. I’ve done raw and also no bad reaction. Do they get diarrhea lmao of course we are introducing something new to their stomach..I’ve learn that just because on food was bad for their dog don’t mean it may be bad for your dog.. 🤘🏽💯🐾
One main concern about legumes, which canids have not evolved to eat, is how they skew the GI microflora. When you put non-species specific fibrous beans into your dog's diet, especially at the high amount found in Orijen and many other modern kibbles, you ruin the balance and that makes a big difference in long term health. Raw fed dogs have a species appropriate microflora and that plays a huge role in immune system function, nutrient absorption and GI health. This is all known science and not conjecture.
My dog must be smart because she refuses to eat kibble or canned dog food,,, I feed her home cook meals. Usually a combination meat mixed with vegetables brown rice sweet potatoes. And I use cod liver oil half a teaspoon every day.
In the long run this maybe interesting, as we did this with two dogs in a row but after a few years it did not work out . Especially with cod liver oil and organ failure
Good quality kibble food is expensive. You could honestly cook for your dog yourself and it would probably be cheaper. Using frozen chicken, brown rice, some cheap veggies, eggs, etc.
Hey Cam! Love your videos. I tell every kibble feeding dog owner to watch them. I have a 10 month old Pitbull that I feed raw but it’s getting difficult as I just recently obtained allergy test results that listed a whole lot of allergies to foods and supplements that are essential. My priority is making sure he gets a great balanced diet. Can you assist me with this in creating a balanced meal plan given his limitations? Do you offer this service?
Hey Jhon, yes I can assist you. If you head to my website we can get you booked in for a time to chat and find a diet that’s right for your dog. Allergy tests are never accurate, we need to physically test low scoring results, this normally brings back more ingredients the dog can digest, further improving the range of foods they can eat and that will work to keep them healthy.
So the dog food never had a chance at getting a fair shake with you. It's funny how you had to go over all of your I've done this for 5 years crap because you know you didn't review the dog food you reviewed the way people feed their dog
Making a fully complete raw food diet is very difficult, even more so for a puppy when nutrition is so so important in their early development. The huge problem we have in this industry is that it is LITTERED with conflicting information and arguments, honestly the amount of times I've chuckled away to myself after reading / watching two completely different sets of information and guidance that contradict eachother. The cherry on the top is when they state they are certified nutritionist or vertinarian. But there is a logical view on this, as stated in this video and many others, is that in the wild, these dogs would consume raw meat, thats a fact. Interestingly enough, vets seem to heavily push kibble as the go to for pet nutrition, which ive never understood why. The main concern for me and my pup is to ensure hes getting ALL of the correct nutrition during his early development. I simply can not play around with that. That is where a complete kibble with some fresh toppers shines. As much as id love to feed him raw, there are far too many nutritional needs to think about and im not confident i can fullfill that but sourcing my own meat. Companies who make a complete raw food charge an insane price (looking at £200-£250) per month to meet my dogs requirements. Thats just robbing in my eyes. I imagine many or in this same position. So, until raw feeding becomes readily available at an affordable price, or easy to source meats that cover all nutritional needs, then kibble and fresh toppers are the way to go.
Literally doesnt matter what is on the ingrediwnts list to this man, if it was every single ingredient that he fed his dog raw but in kibble form he would still say dont feed it to your dog every day.
I feed my dog Poppy’s Picnic fresh food. They have a selection you can cook which my dog likes. I sometimes add a small amount of liver & veg. I hope you approve 😊
The beef (excuse the pun) I have with feeding raw meat to dogs is the fear of the animal that it came from could have had a terrible illness like a cancer or something, I have seen the raw a relative of mine feeds her dogs and I wouldn’t feed it to the dustbin never mind a pet . This day and age neither farmers or companies are going to throw rancid meat away if they can get money for it and selling it to the pet food market is ideal
I can assure you the meat will be better quality than the kibble - I recommend you watch this video for a bit more information too instagram.com/p/C9kCmgJibNM/
Great video, glad I found you !Could you review visionary keto pet beef kibble recipe it only as 7% carbs! Also Carna4 as @laura trujillo said.🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼please as someone with a disability is hard to do raw.
I appreciate what you explain about processed dog food. Nonetheless, if you compare Orijin to Royal Canin kibble, the latter ONLY has dehydrated proteins. Royal Canin doesn’t have all these legumes, though. Just grain. So between the two, is still Orijin better? (I am specifically referring here to Orijen Original and Royal Canin Medium Adult)
Kibble is not allowed in our home. We feed raw. Species appropriate diet. We supplement, too. Cam, you speak way too kindly about dry garbage in a bag.
This is the ideal situation. You're right I am, but I don't want to scare people shitless, I just want them to start introducing fresh foods, then they'll see the massive benefits it gives to their dog and hopefully they'll then introduce more! That's my game plan.
@@thedognutritionist your game plan worked for us! Opened my eyes to the whole pet food industry, started feeding fresh but cooked food and noticed straight away how engaged our pup was with his food, how much he enjoyed it, how much less his farts smell lol and how much more consistent and healthy his poops are. Gave me the confidence to start giving raw meaty bones and now some raw food too. I now can't believe how naive I was - thank goodness for cam 😇
I went from Orijen to 3yrs, then raw for another 3 (at first 3 years on Orijen my dog had cysteine bladder stones) attributed from dry food and not enough hydration, raw food and more hydration solved that Recently feeding cooked home food different meats, eggs, sweet potato blue berries, natural yoghurt, cottage cheese, good salmon oil, some greens are going in soon, also some raw food supplements added like green lipped muscle powder and natural multi herb vitamin powder, a few cheap snacks but he chews Carrotts He seems to be very happy on this as it varies like our own food, Orijen gave him lots of wind and strong smelling stools, raw and home cooked food is the way to go
Bogus! 17+yr old Cat...Dry food, without any issues! Also know of Dogs having no issue!... REMEMBER! Modern Dogs are NOT Wolves! their stomach digestion and acids are nowhere near that of a Wolf. Now consider raw meats!... do you know the growth hormones pumped into live Cattle? Poultry?... Are you going to go grass rears Cattle?... If youre a Millionaire you could try! but one would STILL need to involve vitamins, oils, fruits etc....
I feed raw and have learnt about canine nutrition from dr nick Thompson and dr Conor brady. It’s important if you own a dog the importance of feeding a species appropriate diet and feeding for their needs not for the owners convenience or preference. Feed to thrive not to just survive. Less money and time at the vets if you feed properly 🫶🏼🐶
wow, really disheartening, I bought it thinking it had higher quality, I read the ingredients in the past and don't recall seeing the extra crap in there. He's been eating meat, eggs, cheese, basically what I eat, he eats. I am strict carnivore.. Winter is setting in, and it is to substitute some morning cooking,. I'm going to switch him to the raw diet, but I need to learn more, I don't want to screw him up, , , ,gee, even done wrong, it's better than kibble I guess. Many thanks for the video

Have you ever heard of Gerald Pepin? He is a UK qualified canine nutritionist, writer, speaker and homemade dog food advocate. This is what he says about giving dogs Lentils. "As far as our dogs are concerned, lentils have a great deal to offer. One of the reasons they are a popular ingredient in commercial dog food. Aside from the fact that they’re cheap of course!" "Lentils can help manage blood sugar levels. This makes them an ideal ingredient for the diabetic dog. They can also help lower cholesterol, help boost both the immune and the digestive system. And they are good for the heart as well. On top of all that, they have natural cleansing properties which can help detoxify your dog’s body." No offence, but why would I listen to your bro science, with zero qualifications to back it up. When a qualified canine nutritionist states otherwise. 🤔 That's like going to Tesco for medical
i give my dog victor high plus pro dog food 2 cups with 2 eggs boil with shell and a bit ground meat for flavor and a dash of coconut oil either i give that morning or at night and also do kibble with shredder cheese sometimes and some times i add kibble with chicken liver cooked what your opinion of giving a dog cheese and chicken liver and do you think im adding to much into my meals he is 4 month old serbian rottweiler either 2 cups with eggs and coconut oil or just plain kibble victor high plus pro and i would add shredded cheese or chicken liver to give him more appetite to eat his food thanks @thedognutrionist

I do love your advocacy for raw diets and fresh foods, but you've said nothing in this video about Orijen that couldn't be said about any other kibble. In fact, it could be suggested to reference that Orijen kibble ingredients list to create a homemade meal with the corresponding fresh ingredients.
Exactly, I think that’s his point, feeding your dog any type of kibble is probably not the best for them.
Hi! What brand do you recommend for a labrador? I just started orijen regional red and I want to start supplementing fresh ingredients. Do you think this would be ok or is there a better brand?
I agree that max 50% kibble, the other should be fresh food or at the very least air air-dried /freeze-dried raw.

Right off the bat he is wrong. Dogfood manufactures do not have to list ingredients in order of the amount of the ingredient in the bag.
Ziwi?
Do you have any science to support your claims?
I am science.
@@thedognutritionist - you shouldn't just state your hypothesis as fact. Without proof of your claims your videos are worthless
@@thedognutritionist what is your certification and from whom?
@thedognutritionist627 when buying fresh foods how am I supposed to know the meat or food doesn't contain gmos
I went from Orijen to 3yrs, then raw for another 3 (at first 3 years on Orijen my dog had cysteine bladder stones) attributed from dry food and not enough hydration, raw food and more hydration solved that
Recently feeding cooked home food different meats, eggs, sweet potato blue berries, natural yoghurt, cottage cheese, good salmon oil, some greens are going in soon, also some raw food supplements added like green lipped muscle powder and natural multi herb vitamin powder, a few cheap snacks but he chews Carrotts
He seems to be very happy on this as it varies like our own food, Orijen gave him lots of wind and strong smelling stools, raw and home cooked food is the way to go

Well said

I feed raw and have learnt about canine nutrition from dr nick Thompson and dr Conor brady. It’s important if you own a dog the importance of feeding a species appropriate diet and feeding for their needs not for the owners convenience or preference. Feed to thrive not to just survive. Less money and time at the vets if you feed properly 🫶🏼🐶
Currently we give our dog 1/2 kibble, 1/2 homemade.
That's fantastic, the more fresh you can do the healthier your pooch will be. Keep up the great feeding!
Gosh here I am thinking my dog is eating well. 😅 because I spend more and get a better brand.
It's a good quality kibble, don't let him scare u. But fresh is better.
@@lollybabe08best response I’ve saw so far.
wow, really disheartening, I bought it thinking it had higher quality, I read the ingredients in the past and don't recall seeing the extra crap in there.
It's good food same ingredients, no change. The legumes are only approx 12%. You can see the full ingredients on their Canadian and UK websites.
@@lollybabe0812% is too much, any legumes are not good
Orijen ranks 2nd as the best kibble,
Carna4 ranks 1
Source?
Carna4 is 42% carb, it's inferior to orijen
‘We don’t have the data, to reveal this simple truth’ if you don’t have the data, how do you know it’s true 😂😂 Not very scientific, do you just trust your 5 years experience or your 900 hours patient experience😂
Aside from the fact that they’re cheap of course!"
"Lentils can help manage blood sugar levels. This makes them an ideal ingredient for the diabetic dog. They can also help lower cholesterol, help boost both the immune and the digestive system. And they are good for the heart as well. On top of all that, they have natural cleansing properties which can help detoxify your dog’s body."
No offence, but why would I listen to your bro science, with zero qualifications to back it up. When a qualified canine nutritionist states otherwise. 🤔
That's like going to Tesco for medical
it's about 12-13% legumes, not a lot as it's 85% meat/fish/organs. I agree fresh is better. Cooked legumes in low percentage is fine for dogs.
i give my dog victor high plus pro dog food 2 cups with 2 eggs boil with shell and a bit ground meat for flavor and a dash of coconut oil either i give that morning or at night and also do kibble with shredder cheese sometimes and some times i add kibble with chicken liver cooked what your opinion of giving a dog cheese and chicken liver and do you think im adding to much into my meals he is 4 month old serbian rottweiler either 2 cups with eggs and coconut oil or just plain kibble victor high plus pro and i would add shredded cheese or chicken liver to give him more appetite to eat his food thanks @thedognutrionist
Probably more variety, hopefully he can suggest help
Sweet, thank you!
Im supplementing my dogs origen with freeze dried raw now. Appreciate your thoughts.
Try supplement with fresh organ meat, eggs and eggshell and grated fruit/ veggies in small amounts.
@@thedognutritionist hi my CC puppy is now 4 months old and weighted around 44 lbs, but I give him boiled chicken, kibble and some veggies. Can I start raw now ? Or is that ok if I give him boiled meat only?
@@fitchap You can start raw now! Make sure to give him some organ meat too, eggs and eggshells!
