    I wish that I was able to get this food for my large German Shepard I had when I was a kid. He would have lived a much healthier life and aged a lot better and possibly not have to be put down at the young age of ten because of severe hip dysplasia. Today some 30 years later, my child's five year old dog; a Coton detulear; has been eating Orijen since she was a puppy and has been nothing but healthy. Even the veterinarian stated that this dog is extremely healthy and wanted to know what we were feeding her. I'm glad to have found this product and am convinced that it will keep my child's dog happy and healthy for years to come.

    I'll not pretend to be an expert on the subject but I have read a lot about canine nutrition over the last 10 years. If I wasn't feeding Prey Model Raw, my choice of dog food would be Orijen Regional Red - without a doubt, based on their ingredients.
    My dogs are fed raw, whole meat: pork, chicken, beef, turkey, venison; organs are liver and kidney; whole mackerel or sardines and raw, whole eggs in the shell. Supplements are canine glucosamine and wild salmon oil. Cheers.

    Thanks for the video. About 7 years ago I started researching the best dog food I could give to my 3 dogs. It took a while, but I finally settled on Orijen Red. Because of my research, though, I noticed that a lot of people were feeding their dogs raw meat. So, while I was feeding Orijen Red, I continued my research which resulted in my switching to a Prey Model Raw Diet. Most people don't have the time or energy or whatever else it takes to go raw, and for those I would recommend Orijen Red.

      Agreed. I have done a great deal of research. The orijen does have some freeze dried.. the Acana does not. (same company) My dog became very ill and I was feeding him one of the "best" foods -The vet didn't know what the issue was and suggested I change foods. In my search, I came across a testing that was done by blogger Rodney Habib who did this because his dog had become ill and was told he would not live much longer. He too did extensive research and changed the food - ending in a feeding a raw diet. He continued researching and started a blog. He will tell you that he is not a veterinarian, but that his dog continued to live for many years once he changed the diet, and he has worked with, challenged and looked for "proof" from some of the world's leading vets and chemists. (back to the test) You can find the test on youtube under Rodney and will be surprised. Steve Brown- who challenged some of the top dog food producers to provide their ingredient/recipes and the companies would not share. He began his own research- and then someone gave him a few of the companies list of ingredients....he had it tested, and you can read his story for further info... and then created his own fresh/frozen dog food ....he still continues his research and writing books. Both of these men are not and will not pretend to be vet's but they have gone to chemists, vet's around the world, and challenged the norm. Origen/Acana may not be perfect... but for those who cannot afford to do raw nutrient based feeding all the time, it is a high standard food that I use to supplement.

      You don't need time or energy to feed raw. Find a supplier (lots online) that offers frozen raw completes (80% muscle meat, 10% offal, 10% bone). Choose a variety. Checkout. Wait for courier to deliver frozen to your door. Fill freezer. Defrost and feed. Not difficult, friends.

      From what I have seen, feeding exclusively rarely commercial dog food to a large breed dog like my 80 lb. 6 month old Kuvasz is not affordable for most people. Orijen is very expensive--feeding commercially produced raw food is a full double the cost. If I was going to spend that much I would but all fresh ingredients from the grocery store and do a home cooked diet which if done properly., would be if higher quality than a retail raw dog food. I do make my pup one home cooked meal dail--about 1/3 of his total diet.

    I've been buying Orijen for years. I swear buy it. I adopted a near- dying 17 year old poodle who I fed this to & she lived to be 20!! I feed this to my cats. They're both very happy & healthy. They never get sick & I never have to take them to the vet. This is just my personal experience. Acana is also a very good choice.

      @MyPapagio 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your poor poodle might have lived to be 30 had you not done what you did. Ever stop to think of that? World record is 30 for a dog. Whole raw diet is the only way to accomplish this. Commercially available, raw meat diet only.

    • @MyPapagio
      @MyPapagio 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And when you say "Acana is also a very good choice", why do you think that? Be honest with yourself. Why are you telling people that? Are you falling for the beautiful packaging? Do you really understand the ingredient profile? Do you really know how this industry works? Acana is made by Orijen and was developed to broaden the customer base. It is a lower meat inclusion food and therefore cheaper. That way they can attract the tight wad people who don't want to feed their dog what they are really supposed to. A "Balanced" raw meat diet.

      Well before, i fed orijen for probably 5 years. It was high quality and i still trust it compared to other kibble on the market. I ended up switching to Carna4 when the FDA reported CDM reports associated with many brands like Orijen. Despite me not believing the FDA and their antics i still ended up switching to Carna4 for a bit cause it had a limited ingredient panel with somewhat low intake of Carbs. After that i discovered Farmina dog food :) which in my opinion is one of the best. Something that had to do with enough Taurine and L-carnitine in the food.
      Currently i completely removed my dog from kibble and i feed him
      "The Bones & Co" keto raw dog food. And my dog is thriving like never before. The only bad part is that for a small breed dog its like 50 bucks for 24 feeding days. I could just imagine a big dog 0.0
      There are other alternatives on raw food companies like "Small Batch" and "Answers" i highly recommend raw dog food.

      I agree with this. ORIJEN it's fine if you have zero time but best is homemade raw. Not that difficult. I use raw ground turkey and fish with many mixins like kelp, ground flaxseed, ground Brazil and pine nuts for selenium and magnesium, Brewer's yeast, krill oil, coconut oil, shredded beet, Sun soaked shiitake mushrooms, kale and/or microgreens.. I also add three different hip joint supplements and sea meal buy solid gold for added vitamins minerals and Digestive health. In addition to this concoction I feed a raw, bone and skin included, chicken thigh. On the side , raw chicken hearts. I have used raw food I've ordered online but I have found none my dog likes. This also includes other online food. They just refuse to eat it most of the time and want their homemade. Not saying your dog will refuse it also.

    Man why is the internet so dang toxic? People fighting yet contradicting themselves in the same post.
    'Not all dogs can handle high protein, that's why I only feed RAWWWWWWW'
    We get it. Feeding raw is good. Not always by the way, but a lot of the time.
    Now why does the fact that raw might be better, disqualify Orijen as a good alternative?
    Let's talk quickly about how feeding raw is expensive and time consuming.
    One guy here literally posted that there is no way that they are using high quality meat because the cost would be to high for a corporation who buys hundreds of thousands of tons of meat to sell in dog food...but of course he feeds his dogs RAAAAWWAAA.
    Assuming you have the knowhow, a veterinary and nutrition degree to gather the correct combination of raw ingredients that your dog should be eating you still have to have the time to go to the market and get it every few days or the space to freeze it in your home.
    Don't listen to this bunch of gate keeper.
    Orijen is good food. There are a lot of good foods on the market. Do some research check your bank account and find what is right for you and your dog.
    Plenty of dogs make it fine on crap store brand foods. Some don't. Some require a higher protein diet some don't.
    Yes this is marketing for Orijen. Does that make it EVIL or untrue untill you see the factory? No. Don't be ridiculous.
    Yes the ingredients need to be dried to make kibble so water is a non factor. But it is still a selling point.
    Ya the same damn people that want organic, local farm, renewable everything non-GMO BS and want to shit on a company for trying to sell their product.
    Look... Orijen is not going to cure your dogs cancer. It isn't going to kill them either. It's good quality food with a high price tag. $100 a bag is no joke but raw is just as expensive, tedious and can be nutritionally incomplete.
    Much love to all you and your dogs. Treat each other with kindness.

      I agree with everything your saying, except I think feeding Raw would be cheaper where I live. I’m feeding puppy orijen right now, but i got in contact with a vet who feeds raw and they buy everything at walmart and it seems a good bit cheaper than what i’m buying. also doesn’t really seem time consuming. However i’m feeding orijen until he’s out of the puppy stage then i’ll reevaluate. Also my families beagle mix lived 20 years on crap dog food. He actually thrived on it. Never had health problems, ran in our woods for hours everyday. Was hit by a car and broke both his back legs and within a year he was back to running in the woods everyday until his last! He actually ran off to go die by himself at 20 years old. Awesome dog.

      @@fatkiefbowls your dog was in the small percentage that thrive on the crap food. dogs are very resilient and it takes a while for the negative effects of poor quality dog food to show. if you plan on transitioning to raw I recommend you read the book by Steven Brown the ancestral diet for dogs. he literally broke down the science in a way you can apply it.
      you can meet every nutrient requirement in the correct ratios for your dog. I imagine that's why you're feeding orijen puppy because you have the relief of k owing it's high quality and nutritionally balanced.
      The risk of raw is its not always balanced for thriving.

      The maltese are small dogs. I'm not like others who try to tell you what to do. I'm just warning you. I had my dog on Orijen for 4 years, and it started destroying his colon. If your dog strains and grunts to poop, then you need to consider switching. My dog became very constipated on Orijen, and he started getting really bloody stools. He also started limping in the rear.
      Just watch him potty and make sure he isn't straining. Please read this:

    Origen used to be made in CANADA. That was the original formula and why it got so famous - because it contained top-notch ingredients. Now, the Orijen you can get in the USA is made right here - the plant is in Kentucky. AND they of course changed the formula! Orijen USA is nothing like the Canadian formula. Check it out and do your own research on this. We stopped buying it because of the quality - reduced by 50% from what it was when it came from Canada.

    Well, the "high protein no grain" diet of Orijen was killing my poodle. Here's my story:
    We got our 11 lb poodle from the pound and began to feed him Orijen right away, as recommended by a holistic/gourmet dog food store. We thought we were doing what was best for the little guy, but over time, we started paying more and more attention to his trouble with constipation. Whenever he ate the Orijen, he would come back to his feeding area within minutes and drink a boat-load of water...so much water that sometimes he would get sick from drinking so much water. In the beginning we'd have to watch him because he would pee in the floor from so much drinking. Regardless of all the water he was taking in, he was still seriously constipated. But we thought that his straining must be normal, because Orijen is such good food, right?
    Wrong. We tortured our poor dog for 4 years on Orijen until finally he started bleeding out the rectum/having bloody stools. We took him to the Vet, thinking that there must be something physically wrong with the dog; perhaps a physical deformity, or an intestinal problem, etc. NOPE. After two trips and antibiotics, etc, the Vet concluded that it was the dog food. He asked what we were feeding him, and then he asked us if he drank tons of water after eating, and I said yes. The Vet just shook his head (with some disgust on his face). He gave me a laxative prescription...I think he was afraid of getting harassed if he mentioned switching from my "great" dog food.
    I took it upon myself to do my own research. And I switch my dog over to Royal Canin Poodle food. His stools are now normal and there is no more straining. I'm monitoring him to see if his itchy skin problems clear up, as well. While on Orijen, his skin was dry and itchy and flaky. More on that, later.
    I think Vets are becoming afraid to say anything because the "armchair" experts will attack them. Here's an article I found that shows the differences between domesticated dogs and wolves, and how the diet of domesticated dogs has evolved over the thousands of years of domestication:
    skeptvet.com/Blog/2016/05/dogs-are-still-not-wolves-human-feeding-practices-have-shaped-the-dog-genome/
    Final comment: Not all dogs can handle the raw diet or the high-protein diets and no grain. Our dogs ARE NOT wolves. They are domesticated animals who have adjusted to the human diet over time. We need to stop attacking people who are feeding what works with their dogs. We also need to stop attacking Veterinarians and Veterinarian scientists who disagree with the no grain diets, etc.

      Great comment. I'm a vet myself and researching different kinds of dog foods. Not really a fan of raw diet (mostly unbalanced, could cause thyroid problems in your dog or vitamin/mineral dificiency,....). Costumers get upset sometimes if I tell them raw food isn't such a great idea (because they think you only want to sell a specific brand of dog food). On the other hand: sometimes a raw diet is recommended in certain conditions. You really have to look at your dog and see what he/she is comfortable with. If you want to put your dog an a home cooked meal make sure it's perfectly balanced (and it's not that simple as you would think). Also, a wouldn't put a dog with kidney problems on Orijen because of the high protein level. Please people, listen to your vet!

      There are a few things beyond the food you should consider, mainly being that you have no idea where this dog was from. I see dogs coming from backyard breeders who feed nothing but the cheapest stuff on the shelf, to show breeders who feed generations the same, grain based foods, usually royal canin because they get a discount. Generations of feeding grain based diet takes its toll, and I don't think for a second that these big, scientific facilities don't know this. They make the food that way so pets can't eat anything else.
      As for raw food being dangerous, you said it yourself: unbalanced food can cause issues. Well, an unbalanced kibble would do the same, no? The problem isn't that the food isn't cooked, it's that people need to understand the balance of feeding a dog. People have been brainwashed to think that a dehydrated nugget is perfectly fine to feed every day forever, and when they try raw feeding they forget that raw food isn't just chicken breasts.
      I myself feed Origen and Acana to my pets and they have flourished. I have seen other pets completely turned around by switching to a low carb diet, be it kibble, canned, home cooked or raw.

The only difference here is that these guys are spending way more on advertising, and giving gifts to veterinarian clinics. The things she put in that pot are only for a youtube, They never use those ingredients. Beside their food is so expensive, instead of buying their food, why not I buy all those ingredients and make it at home.

    Even if Orijen is BSing about how they prepare their foods (and I'm not saying that they necessarily are), I'm glad that they tackled generic dog food processing. It's highly processed food that can barely be called food. Cooked repeatedly at temperatures ranging from 280-300 F and supplemented to death with vitamins and minerals (which should hint at how little nutrients is present in the rest of the food). What dog can sustain a healthy life style eating that on a daily basis for years on end?

    With the cost of bag, you could just feed raw lol. And then you have better food. I wouldn't trust everything they say, companies ALWAYS take shortcuts. I'm not risking those shortcuts. I have only purchased 2 bags of this brand to give my ferrets better kibble while I was in the process of preparing for raw switch, and buying freezer. And it's too high in ph, and you can visually see it when their pee crystalizes because of those peas.

    I have a Pembroke Welsh corgi and am wondering which orijen dog food would be good for a corgi asking as concerned pet parent
    Also does this dog food need to be put in the fridge compared to other dog foods ?

      im in the same boat as you. getting an 8 week old pup end of this year and want to transition from my breeders food to orijen as soon as i can with the pup so wanting to get reviews. Also getting a corgi, my plan is to use the puppy version orijen then move to the six fish after 8-10months.

    Yet once baked both brand x and Orijen look exactly the same. Once orijen bakes the crap out of it isn't it essentially the same as brand x?

    Any suggestions why other dog food makes my dog sick? If we stick to a certain brand. And they do not get sick. But tried lots of it no use. Any suggestions why only a certain brand that they do not get sick to? Are dogs are 100% healthy on the product. We also prefer to stay on dry. Also we did try the dry food from other brands... Still the same results... But once we keep feeding them the original diet there sickness goes away...

      karma police I am getting an Old Southern White American Bulldog puppy this Saturday, and we have chosen 4Health as the brand of food to go with. Great food as far as we can tell, and it used REAL MEAT AND REAL VEGETABLE... I think we made the right choice...

    OK, this is all well and good, but ... Nestle is now in talks to try and buy Champion Pet Food. If they succeed, what's to stop them from bringing their accountants in and re-working everything to cut costs and decrease quality while playing on the Acana and Orijen brand names?
    Also, somebody please ask the card girl out. She seem so depressed back there.

    Orijen is a great brand that my Pup just refuses to eat. I burned quiet a hole in my pocket to get my lil boy to chow on it, but he just wont't. And then I realized why, my dog is not a guard dog, not my hunting companion, not a farm dog so Orijen is just too much for his gut to handle. On Orijen he ad runny BM for as long as he was on it. Now I know why, LENTILS. Lentils may be low glycemic but is a natural gas generator.

      Highly recommend Bil Jac for your pup if he's a little picky about his food. It's whole chickens and corn as the grain (which is slow cooked so it breaks down and the pups can digest it). Never met a dog that doesn't like it and it's a small American company. My dog is currently 16 and she's eaten it for most of her life (along with table scraps!)

    Tried Origen and my dogs had GAS so bad I nearly died. Went over to Acana. Is the higher protein the problem?

    • @zjaajref
      @zjaajref 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some dogs can't tolerate the high protein level that well. Don't let the protein level on the bag fool you: sometimes they use a poor digestable protein (Orijen seems to put high digestable protein in their food, but then again, how can you really be sure?). If it doesn't work for your dogs it's not a problem, just find a food that works for your dogs. People tend to forget that every dog is different and what works for one dog doesn't work for the other!

    • @14Raine14
      @14Raine14 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You're dog may be eating to fast, or maybe it just doesn't agree with them. Maybe they have a sensitivity to something, or maybe they use a different part of the animal in Acana. There could be 100 reasons, but the physical amount of protein is likely not the problem. Dogs are build to eat meat

      That happened to my puppy for a few weeks. His stool was also wet at first due to the food brand switch but normalized after adjusting to it. His skin and coat looks a lot healthier than before. Bad thing is price of course. I don’t want to cause anymore stress to his system so I will stick to the brand.
