  • Rocket Rod is finally making some progress on getting the "Old Girl" back on the tracks, but nothing is ever easy and the impact from the infamous Kimberley trip continues to grow as more problems are discovered.
    How would you fix this? What could we have done differently?

    if you are going to do trips where there is grass seeds, it would be a good idea to put a flyscreen(or mesh) to stop the seeds getting to the radiator and ac core
    it will be great seeing you back on the tracks

    Random little fact for you about Toyota using 12mm head bolts: The Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) specifies a couple small fastener differences than the rest of the world uses, one example being 12mm heads on M8 bolts, while the Euro and American manufacturers would use 13mm for an M8 bolt. You should notice than pretty much everything Japanese doesn't have any 13mm head bolts on it, unless some bolts were replaced with ones that don't adhere to JIS.

      Is it impssible to mount something that catches the seeds etc before hitting the radiator?

    Hi Rod, I've owned a 60 series for a while and what I've got in front of the radiator is a very fine aluminium mesh, mine is actually in front of the grill protecting oil cooler, condenser and the radiator, been in some bad places and actually had the mesh full of stuff a few times but the radiator and coolers etc never have had much grass seeds anything else in there it works great!.

    • @WholesaleAutomatics
      @WholesaleAutomatics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that's a brilliant idea, I think I might do exactly this as a permanent upgrade Paul.

    • @6226superhurricane
      @6226superhurricane 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mesh can cut airflow by up to 50%, you're better off making a removable screen and using it when needed for seeds, if seeds aren't an issue then 10mm stainless wire mesh is good protection from sticks and stones.

    • @paulboon1100
      @paulboon1100 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WholesaleAutomatics Thanks but not my idea mate was on the car 23 years ago when I bought the 60 and left it on, but yeah I reckon it's a great idea too, saved me some bother! I just replaced the original radiator in nearly 700k km.
      BTW to Michael, air flow might be affected but mine has never run hot even at 45degrees C in the outback and the radiator and other coolers and condenser has never had any fins rusted, which mainly happens because of insects in Oz, I run the old square IPF spots and winch controller on the bullbar as well, the screen was so full of insects at one stage I had to scrape the buggers of, it was like a mat, still no overheating though. Non in the radiator either.
      On the 70series I'd say that the cooling system is robust enough to deal with it as well looking at the rubbish that was in Rocket's radiator and condensor. Other cars/trucks I can't tell you about. But yeah leave it off if not needed.
      Love your videos too Rod, look forward to them.

    Pull radiator, condenser, auto transmission cooler out and take them to the radiator specialist for them to clean properly, recore, or renew . It's the only way if radiator is full of grass seeds , insects etc
    You carnt clean them out with air or pressure washer . The dirt and seeds just turn to mud bricks inside the cooling fins
    What brand of fuel tank is underneath rod . My old d Max has got 129 litre tank , the long ranger, brand it's built like a brick shithouse
