That in itself takes a lot of technical understanding, to be able to guide a conversation in such a way that they enthusiastically talk about their profession - kudos Edd...

In Canada's 'Rust Belt' of the Atlantic provinces, it's not uncommon to have vehicles' underside/chassis sprayed with any of various brands of oily products. The concoctions are mostly an oil, but may have proprietary additives that help to prevent rust. Vehicles can last almost "forever" if they're sprayed annually.

In the UK, it was Waxoyl that was blown into and over chassis. Hammerite have a rattle can product that does the same.

In Germany, they mostly use Mike Sanders which is a vaseline/wax combo (similar to PX11 from the armed forces). It has to be sprayed into crevices while liquified with a heated gun and nozzle, and it makes a mess of every place where you spray stat stuff (it will coat everything), but as far as rust protection goes, it is great. Will keep on creeping even upwards for years in warm weather, and your car will leave vaseline stains on the ground for years if coated correctly - but moisture won't have any chance to touch the metal, and without moisture there's no (further) rust.

I’m unimpressed with Waxoyl. It goes on nicely but dries up and peels off. Subsequent coats simply fall off when the original layer gives up.
I’m due to try Lanoguard, which sounds like a thinner layer of lanolin grease.
That said, chain saw bar oil thinned with white spirit does a great job.

Fun video. I enjoyed it, and I love the orange frame. 🙂
A suggestion if I might. Either do an interview or a documentary. Try to avoid asking an expert something, and then immediately answering it yourself, as he answers. My impression upon initial viewing is that you verbally stepped on Kevin multiple times in the shop. That may or may not be accurate, but it was my impression during initial viewing.
I realize that you are enthused about this project, and I have always enjoyed listening to you explain things, but try to avoid mixing your styles of presentation. 😉
"I'm just watching dry paint." LOL! 😆
I'm pretty sure that powder coating is less "painting" than "plastic coating".
Stop admiring the boxes of other power coating colors. You've chosen orange, my Netherlander friend. 😋

I came in to check on progress to notice the finish on the lamps looked a bit odd. His sweat had actually started stripping the laquer and stain off the lamps! Big fan of orange, certainly a statement! Not such an enthusiast of powder coat in weather or impact prone applications though.
Powdercoat has a nasty habit of debonding, cracking and then trapping moisture behind it, a nightmare on bare steel.
Add to this, stone chip impacts and it just seems like a recipe for trouble, especially with road salt. I guess if its just a show car, then its not a big issue, otherwise i fear it might cause more problems than it solves.

I do some powder coating at work occasionally for personal stuff and i find it highly satisfying although I wouldn't recommend for a chassis or any components which are going to be subject to rocks etc as once it chips that's it and you cant really do much about it. the cover plate of my Ford SUV was powder coated, it rusted thru and leaked, the Ford replacement part was made in Mexico and painted, the engine pan was also powder coated, when that started to leak I traded the car in. They use powder coat in the US because they're not allowed to use real paint, it's BADD for the environment but rusty cars are just fine. What happens with PC is some rock you kick up will make a small hole in it and let the water in where it creeps in between the metal and the powder film that continues to look just fine until it finally fails, by that time the entire part is rusted through. The real protection in your example is the zinc. My MB car is 25 years old, no rust, it has zinc dipped sheet metal on the bottom that is coated with MBs proper paint process and then sprayed with a coating of soft wax. I live in PA not CA so rustly cars are common. The outside paint on the car is original and very good, quality shows but the newer ones aren't built that way, that sucks.

Well I was taught to let the galvanising act by itself. It has been said that a small chip in the paint will expose the galvanising and all potential will be concentrated on that area and it will rust into a hole rather than the whole chassis acting as a sacrificial anode. Galvanised buckets will not leak until all of the galvanising has disappeared. 😮

Browsed the American Galvanizer Association site and found some answers. A 3 mil coating can add up to 15% additional weight to an object (which seems high to me) and despite its higher initial cost, is certainly cheaper over the long haul than traditional painting. My letter box post will cost less than $20 to maintain over 100 years (in 2024 dollars) and over $150 if it got regular repainting.
Overkill, probably. But living in a Rust Belt climate, the vehicles I treasure most never see road salt. A small guilty pleasure, but a rust free chassis is a joy to behold.

I'd say the biggest advantage of the orange is being able to see all the little bits of mud and gunk under the car so you know if you've washed it clean enough. Otherwise the green is a much less offensive color, but I don't know how visible the chassis is from the topside when the rest of the car is on it.

Powder coating looks beautiful on certain non-structural components, but I'm not sure it's the best thing for something like a chassis, especially if it can flex.
My worry would be that a tiny break in the coating would let water in and hold it there. It's a little bit like wrapping the steel in polythene. A few (salty) winters of freezing and thawing could lift the coating, letting in more water and making things worse than if the galvanising had been left bare.
I'd have flooded the galvanised chassis inside and out with Waxoyl. That doesn't form a hard shell; it lasts indefinitely, it can flex and creep and even self-heal minor abrasions.
    Just my opinion, of course...😁

As more different layers protect the frame as better it is. I advice after galvanizing and powder coating a layer of fat or wax under the whole car.
Don't forget the frame inside, otherwise it can rust from inside to outside.

I am wondering on how many places they broke the galvanize seal by sanding and even grate the surface. Next to that, I’ve seen so many galvanized objects down the street, balconies, garage doors, traffic posts, with peeling layers of powder coating that I’ve lost my connivence a bit. It’s that sacrificing zink that rejects anything on top of it after a few years and sometime even (les worrying) decades.

    • @markdavis2475

Powder coating is porous. It is the WORST coating for metal protection.
I found this out when living near the coast and the salt got through the coating to rust the metal.
      Proper paint is the best.

  • @tonycavez
    @tonycavez หลายเดือนก่อน

powder coating looks good but is not the best protector just look at the chairs in your favorite outdoor cafe or even your back porche ,it starts to lift and rust , powder is plastic melted over metal , paint sticks to the metal so it's much better , if you want the frame to last forever, every few years spray it with an oily film

  • @dukeallen432

I think the colour is stunning, the powercoat is I believe not an very durable top coat, it is prone to scratches etc...Maybe if you would have painted the chassis with a polyurethane 2 component, primer and an polyurethane 2 component laquer, you would have gotten much much more mechanical protection out of the paint. I have painted streetlights with this paint and it is super hard.
