    Nice try to get this rust bucket going. Unimogs facinate me. I came really close to buying one many years ago, they're a strong, rugged military vehicle. The deciding factor for the purchase was I didn't have a use for the thing. Apparently neither did the former owner of this Unimog. I would like to see how they go together however.

    I love being able to watch a young person rescue a military vehicle. Maybe you could locate a few sponsors to help with the cost of restoring that 411. Even though the frame looks beat, it could be pulled back in to shape. It would be a ton of work but I think it might be worthwhile. Just for the uniqueness of that vehicle alone.

    Very nice find,I would love to see you get it running..1 thing though,why did you not engage the PTO and try turning the front output shaft to try to move the gears enough to find neutral (with a tensioned strap on the gear lever),all the room for leverage you could ever need. Looking forward to seeing the progress on this 🙂

    • @KJOff-Road

      Hah, i actually did try exactely that, right after the bit where i showed i could engage the PTO.
      But i messed up with my camera. so i only had a little bit of that footage. And it turned out it didn't make any differance anyway, so i just left it out of the video :)

    I went to Brødeskov Kaserne sometime in the early 1990's to look at all the stuff being auctioned off. There were 5 or six Unimog's there, along with Merlin engine blocks, crates with 100's of tire irons, cage pallets with typewriters and a BMW R65 G/S motorcycle, that looked like it had been run over by a tank.

    If the AWD isn't permanent, maybe brake loose the rear brakes and bring force into the gearbox by turning the axle. But putting it in N won't be the fix in this case. Unfortunately. Interested in seeing more of this little mog. Thanks for sharing!

    From the condition of the valvetrain, I think you're right. The chances of the engine being okay are fairly good! The clutch....lol. Did you look at the transmission, transfer case, or axles? The wheels did seem to spin, however little, as you shoved it inside. New flywheel, clutch, new bearings in the transmission and transfer case possibly, and it could be a great firewood truck! Agree on the cab not surviving being lifted. Really cool little old truck. I hope you give it some love!

      he said himself it would take _another Unimog worth of parts_ to get it back up and running again. If there's a Unimog out there with the parts needed for this thing that isnt running, that one should be fixed instead of this one.

  • @Subgunman
    @Subgunman 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    You need a sheet metal specialist to take detailed measurements of the cab. These early vehicles were very basic with little curved surfaces. This allowed MB to create a bunch of stamped sections and then either weld or bolt them together to create the cab. Yes remove the upper frame for the top and windshield. Protect that registration plate that is under the hood. You can transfer that to a hand made new cab. I am confident that engine will eventually start with some cleanup and TLC. Since that is a very common engine those parts will all be available as long as the block has not cracked from freezing. It would be a shame to let it rot out or use it for parts.

  • @humbucker0076
    @humbucker0076 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    That's what one would call a basket case.
    You could buy a brand new reproduction cab for a 421, but its expensive - about 15.000€ I think.
    If your red 421 still has the F gearbox and the OM621 engine you could also mix and match parts. The engine fits into the 411s i think. Maybe a 411 cab would fit on the 421 (I've seen it the other way round).
    But it would be a Sisyphean task.
    There are currently some other rough Unimogs at auction at VDI auctions in the Netherlands. The 411s are also gone, not as far as yours, but still gone. However, there is also a 404 up for auction, old fire engine (seems to be original French or Belgian) that served as a mechanic/service truck afterwards. From the pictures it seemed nice. But I guess you don't need another Mog right now. It could have been a nice service rig/transporter, especially if you convert it to lng/cng. But you've got the Magirus now.

    Hey mate, I have heard that the 406 & 411 diffs are different to the 404?
    I've noticed a clear difference in design between the two however I was also told the rear diff on the 406 & 411's is centered instead of offset. Is this correct? or is it still offset from the center?
    Cheers!

    • @KJOff-Road
      @KJOff-Road  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, most of what you heard is correct :)
      Foot these older unimogs, there are mainly 2 types of axles.
      A One-peice axle that, on the surface, looks a lot like most regular truck axles.
      And then a 3 peice axle. That is made up of several sections bolted together.
      (But both types come in several different variants)
      The 404 has the "Older" one-peice axle. while the 406 has the "Never" 3 peice axle.
      And the 411 actually had both. The early models had an axle simmilar to the 404, while the later model had an axle simmilar to the 406.
      However, all of them use the same transmissions, and therfor they are all off-set in pretty much the same way.
      The front is off-centered quite a bit. while the rear is only a little bit off-center

    Sir, this time I really don't get it. Of course you can do what you want and it's your channel. But you recently gave away an extremely rare Unimog because you needed to downsize and wouldn't have time to restore it anyway. Now you've nevertheless bought a wreck of a 411 with the very tiny cabin. Not even a normal size guy without any overweight fits into this thing. Therefore it's quite unpleasant to drive. The famous and usually bulletproof OM 636 has at max 34 hp in these vehicles but can be powered up to 45 hp. Nevertheless the gearbox etc. doesn't allow a decent speed. My main point is, as already mentioned: It's no fun to drive in this way too small cabin. One can't even enter the seat without being a kind of contortionist. So why did you buy this Unimog wreck? You do not even have an Unimog ready to use as a towing vehicle.
    Nevertheless: Thanks a lot for making explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
    Best regards, luck, health and wisdom.
