Sup team - so this video is not a psychological diagnosis Boogie2988. I am not giving any professional judgment about his mental health, behaviours or personality. The purpose of this video is to educate and entertain, known as 'infotainment.' As stated in the video, I'm not trying to insult or belittle Boogie2988. Any jokes in the video are meant to lighten the discussion of a serious topic, not to make fun of Boogie2988 himself. There were some jokes that I was hesitant to make, but I kept them in because they perfectly articulate what it is like when working with someone stuck in learned helplessness. Mental health is a personal and complex issue. This video isn't a complete picture of Boogie2988's experiences. It aims to spark conversation about the idea of learned helplessness as shown in media. Please watch with care and respect for everyone involved. Chur!
Interesting video I really injoyed it, I'm genuinely confused, you're editing is good, the video is good and you have good sources, you deserve so much more. Keep up the amazing work❤
Hey, I think it's cool what you're doing with your channel. Based on your degrees, I'm going to assume this is more of a hobby than anything, but it's still really well put together. Nice work!
Appreciate the feedback @RoseRitonya! It's definitely a hobby for now, but I'm hoping to spend more time on it in the near future. Thanks for commenting and I hope you stick around 💯
Oh? Am i being called out in this video 😮? Haha...I haven't seen the documentary, but I definitely experience learned helplessness. Luckily I'm also a very logical and hardworking person so I've overcome what I can without therapy. Soon! I'll have access to therapy! So I can get even better and more healthy! My current goal is to say no to family. I'm teaching myself that it is okay to be selfish, and that symbiosis in a relationship is a good thing. Not only symbiosis, but giving and taking on terms that work for both parties, not just what is fair on a logical level, or fair according to the other party. I am taking steps to avoid the shocks. I might miss sometimes, but that's okay. Learned helplessness can be unlearned.
Haha its a good documentary, but like I say in the video, its sad in a variety of ways. Learned helplessness is such a tricky thing because the only way to overcome it is if you become aware you are doing it. Unfortunately for Boogie, I believe he lacks the self awareness. Conscientious people tend to be more resilient when it comes to managing their mental health, so I'm glad to hear this is you! You are spot on with your observations imo, especially when it comes to the complexities of relationships. Learned helplessness can absolutely unlearned, just hope Boogie realises it sooner rather than later.
I use to be a fan of Boogie and his videos on gaming. But then he just turned into this lolcow and constantly going on about drama. The doco made me unsub. Hes doing gaming stuff again so should be interesting to see if he keeps going with it. I do have one question mate, whats the difference between learned helplessness and depression? They sound like the same thing
In super basic terms, from a layman who likes to read random shit on the internet: Depression - to yourself "I can't do this because [reason] and I feel like I'm a piece of shit" Learned Helplessness - to everyone else "I can't do this because [reason] and I feel like I'm a piece of shit."
I started watching him because of the gaming stuff, plus he was pretty popular at the time. But I slowly stopped watching overtime. He seems to be making gaming stuff again so that's good. But the documentary really changed my perspective of Boogie as a person. Luke covered it really well. I'll just add that depression is a mental health disorder, where learned helplessness is a learned pattern of behaviour. Depression is caused by a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Learned helplessness occurs when a person feels powerless to change their situation after repeatedly experiencing or perceiving failure.
I think I should explain in detail what I meant when I said people are completely selfish nowadays. In a TH-cam comment section I called out a youtuber for being selfish and attention seeking few months ago. The Fans of that TH-camr attacked me and said that "everyone in this world only care about themselves it's human nature and the (youtuber) did nothing wrong" and then they called me stupid and said everyone is selfish. And their comment had lots of likes to it. That right there broke my heart. These people realise and agree they are evil and don't care at all. Like they have absolutely no remorse. It's honestly disturbing.
Ahhhh ok, I see. The issue with fanbases is that they often echo chambers/silos. Communities of people that tend to think one way and reject anything that counters their views. Online communities tend to be more siloed on average, so even though the experience may have been heart breaking for you, there are other communities that would likely have supported your perspective too. It's hard, but try not let anonymous people online get to you. They end up living in your head rent free, which leads to you ruminating on it for way longer than you should. It becomes draining. The "everyone in this world only care about themselves it's human nature" line is an oversimplification and changes depending on the context. There are selfish people out there, for sure. But the opposite is also true. Individualist cultures - which is much of the west - value independence and tend to be more self involved than collectivist cultures, which tend to put the wellbeing of the community before their own. The internet can be a weird place man, but I hope this can add some value in how you view situations like the one you were in.
I feel like most people nowadays are extremely selfish who only care about their own wellbeing. And put their own wellbeing above others always. And justify their selfishness. I have talked to some people like that. And it was extremely uncomfortable for me. I feel like sh't because of this. It really breaks my heart. I don't know what to do. What do you think?
That's rough, man. Unfortunately, people suck sometimes, and it's hard to support people who aren't aware that they have a problem. The only thing we can do most of the time is focus on what's in our zone of control and accept that you can't force someone to change, but you can be there when they are ready. Some people will never change, and if that is the case, then that's something people need to weigh up. Is this person worth the time and effort? Is this person adding any value to my life? Or are they constantly taking away from my quality of life? It can be a hard process, but it's worth considering when interacting with people like Boogie. There's lots of factors to consider such as age, lifestyle etc but the above can give you some insight into how to think about the situation. Had to be generic because of limited information. Wish you well with your situation man 🙏🏾

Those jokes were spot on tbh. I can only imagine what it’s like to have to deal with learned helplessness, but it looks exhausting
